Polish military observes NPCL training Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members of the Polish army and air force visited Ramstein Air Base, to observe the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron conduct Negatively Pressurized Conex Lite training July 27. The Polish military saw the training and NPCL demonstration as an opportunity to learn more about the equipment and train with U.S. forces. “In the face of the pandemic of COVID-19, it’s become quite apparent that the need for medical support from the military is a crucial part of our duty,” said Polish army Lt. Jakub Sobolewski, Inspectorate for Armed Forces Support Medical Division physician and specialist. “We decided that it would be in our best interest to improve our capabilities of medical evacuation, especially for potentially contagious personnel.” The NPCL was developed as a See NPCL, Pages 2-3

Story and photo by Allied Maritime Command Public Affairs Office ECKERNFÖRDE BIGHT, Germany — Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) conducted Operation Bottom Search German waters near Eckernförde from July 19-23. The Operation was officially known as Marinekommando Unterabteilung Geoinformation Dezernat Maritime Geo-Unterstützung (MWDC). The objective of the operation was to reduce risks posed by sea mines to maritime communities and traffic of the Baltic Sea, and provide enhanced training in mine countermeasures operations to SNMCMG1 participating units. Following the first and second World Wars several ammunition dumping areas were established in the area. Over time, ordnance drifted from the original sites or became naturally buried in sand and mud. To this day, the presence of historical sea mines and other explosive remnants of war poses a threat to maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea. Cumulatively SNMCMG1 performed 141 hours of bottom search operations and covered an area of ten square nautical miles. During the operation, the group located and identified one 1940s artillery shell and two sea mines, confirming that a significant amount of
military munitions remain present in this area of the Baltic Sea from the two World Wars. While mapping the ocean bottom SNMCMG1 also located and mapped two shipwrecks that were unable to be identified due to their deteriorated conditions.
“It is a huge honor and privilege to do what we can to make the Baltic just a little safer than it was before” “By locating and identifying ordnance items in the waters off the coast of Germany, Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 and assigned MCM forces further refined the mapping and location of hazardous items in an area where historic records indicate their presence. Our efforts ensure
the safety and freedom of navigation for all mariners and allow for German authorities to conduct disposal operations at a future date. It is a huge honor and privilege to do what we can to make the Baltic just a little safer than it was before,” said U.S. Navy Captain Sam Brasfield, Commander SNMCMG1. To locate the maximum amount of objects, SNMCMG1 units use hull-mounted or side scan sonar equipment to detect objects on the sea bed. The objects are then further identified by divers or remotely operated underwater vehicles. SNMCMG1 provided all collected data of the area to the German Mine Warfare Data Center (MWDC) to facilitate their efforts to map the sea bed in order to ensure the safety of navigation within German territorial waters. All historical ordnance search activities were executed in close coordination and consent of the German authorities. During the operation, SNMCMG1 consisted of the flagship FGS Elbe (Germany) and mine countermeasures vessels FGS Homburg (Germany) and LVNS Talivaldis (Latvia). Upon completion of Bottom Search Operations, SNMCMG1 transited to Frederickshavn, Denmark for some hard earned rest and resupply before setting sail to resume mine countermeasures operations and exercises.

August 6, 2021 NPCL from Page 1 compact, lightweight version of the Negatively Pressurized Conex. It provides aeromedical care for patients with communicable diseases, including COVID-19, on aircraft with smaller cargo bays. “The NPCL is very important,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Justin Stein, a flight nurse assigned to the 86th AES. “It is not applicable only to COVID, but to any viruses or infectious diseases.” The technology utilizes a negative pressure blower system to circulate clean air between the NPCL and aircraft to minimize transmission of disease to aircrew while transporting patients. Members of the 86th AES conducted training on contamination and decontamination of the NPCL, airway emergencies and precau-
tions to help keep everyone safe during an aeromedical evacuation. Polish military doctors and flight nurses partnered with 86th AES Airmen to gain the experience necessary for an efficient evacuation of those infected with COVID-19. Joint trainings like these strengthen Ramstein Airmen’s relationships with NATO partners and allies and maintain readiness regarding current aeromedical procedures in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “The purpose of the Polish [army and air force] coming to observe what we do is looking at information sharing as a NATO ally,” Stein said. “The exercise has gone very well. We are also training our own members and making sure they are certified to take care of COVID patients and this exercise has made us much more confident to provide care safely in the air.”

Alamo Eggcited: Authentic American Breakfast Tex Mex Restaurant
A
fter spending almost two years in Einsiedlerhof, the Alamo has recently moved down the road to Kindsbach and they are eggcited to meet you there! “Egg-cited?”, you ask? Well, because it’s all about exciting eggs: omelettes, eggs Benedict, eggs on tacos, steak and eggs… The full American breakfast meets Tex Mex. How can anyone say no to that!? The Executive Chef Shawn went to culinary school in the U.S. before joining the military (where he also cooked) allowing him to look back on over 20 years of experience. Then in 2009 he opened his first restaurant called “Good Times” in Hanau, an American style bar and grill. He has been a restaurant owner ever since. Coming up with new American style concepts in Germany, following them through, cooking and managing the place to then sell it or in the case of Alamo keep it. All of his ideas have been successful thus far, but this one definitely meets the demand of Americans and Germans alike who are on the quest for authentic Tex Mex and a breakfast joint, which is quite rare in this area, believe it or not. Chef Shawn is originally from D.C. and his partner Melissa is from Costa Rica. If you want to feel and taste real passion when it comes to cooking, then these two will not disappoint. They both believe the true essence of a dish comes from the origin and the heart to give it that authentic taste. To get the authentic taste, you need to be of that origin. Their positive vibe is infectious and will leave you wanting more. At the Alamo you’ll find an international staff consisting of six employees. They take pride in taking care of you and making sure you are satisfied. Chef Shawn is the main chef and the menu is his own creation. You’ll have to try one of his signature dishes: The “Eggcited McGriddle”. It is a sweet and salty contrast with a lot of different flavors coming together. All of the corn items are gluten free. There are also vegan / vegetarian options. To quench your thirst, they offer a variety
of Mexican sodas, different beers and cocktails. Make sure to order a Mimosa, because it’s not just mixed with your ordinary OJ. If you are looking for a family friendly restaurant with indoor dining and an awesome taste of home, then make your reservations now. It is the first American / Tex Mex breakfast joint ever in Germany that serves breakfast all day long. You can use their ordering system on Facebook, too. Click on “shop Now” to get everything ordered and ready for pick-up at your preferred time. You can also make your reservations that way. So are you egg-cited to go? There’s definitely no place like this one!

Preparation meets emergency: Trained hero saves toddler
The Butler family gathers for a family photo in Heidelberg, Germany.
Emergencies often happen without notice. An Airman’s training proved to make a substantial difference in how a crisis unfolded for one family. Tech. Sgt. Robert Gonzales, United States Transportation Command Patient Movement Requirements Center-East noncommissioned officer in charge, relied on first-aid training to assist Jamar Butler Jr., known as Deuce, a toddler who was choking and in need of medical attention in the Ramstein Air Base housing community, April 20. Twyla Butler, Deuce’s mother, was
distraught and searching for Gonzales at his doorstep while he was upstairs. “She called out to me, but it was not in complete sentences,” Gonzales said. “All I could make out was ‘help,’ ‘the baby’ and ‘unresponsive’.” Gonzales rushed across the street and entered through a partially open door and evaluated the situation. “I walked in and Twyla said ‘Bob, it’s Deuce, I don’t know what’s wrong,’” said Gonzales. “I found him slumped back in his walker. I could not determine immediately if he was unresponsive and not breathing.” After questioning Twyla to ensure there wasn’t any risk of head or spine injury, Gonzales pulled Deuce out of his walker and began CPR. He said

it was initially difficult to help Deuce become responsive. However, Gonzales knew he could delegate certain tasks to the people gathering nearby based on prior training. “I remember stopping and assessing the situation and noticed a crowd forming around the neighborhood,” Gonzales said. Between compressions, he asked a neighbor to call emergency services and direct responders to their location. Time seemed to slow down during those moments. “After what felt like an hour, the amazing medical and fire teams showed up and were able to take over,” Gonzales said. Deuce’s father, U.S. Army Sgt.
U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Robert Gonzales, United States Transportation Command Patient Movement Requirements Center-East noncommissioned officer in charge, stands in front of his home at the Ramstein Air Base housing community, Ramstein Air Base, July 19. Gonzales successfully responded to a neighbor’s medical emergency a few months prior while relying on emergency training provided by the U.S. Air Force to guide his actions.
Jamar Butler Sr., 598th Transportation Brigade transportation movement coordinator, was grateful for his neighbor’s quick response. He shares similar views with Gonzales on how to stay collected during a crisis. “You can never truly prepare for an emergency like this, but breathe and take the necessary steps,” Jamar said. “Having good neighbors that help is a definite plus.” The following day, doctors assured Gonzales he acted appropriately. The information was encouraging to Gonzales and he was thankful for Deuce’s recovery. “The next day, his mom basically fell into my arms and thanked me for everything,” Gonzales said. “I
had to hold back tears because of the moment and the excitement in knowing Deuce was okay.” Gonzales attributes his quick response during this unfortunate ordeal to Air Force training. He encourages others who may find themselves in a similar situation to prepare by taking advantage of the many resources available. “Computer based training, SelfAid Buddy Care, and once-a-month training — all of that stuff works,” Gonzales said. “You just never know when a scenario may happen where you have to fall back on those training days and use what was taught. Pay attention and try to retain everything you can."

by U.S. Africa Command Public Affairs U.S. Africa Command, in coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, provided 310 oxygen canisters containing over one million liters of oxygen to the Tunisian Ministry of Health on July 26. This donation, which arrived in country on board a Tunisian C-130, demonstrates the strength of the bilateral relationship between the United States and Tunisia and highlights the support that U.S. Africa Command is able to provide to our partners. “We are proud to help one of our closest non-NATO allies protect their nation and their people,”

said Lt. Gen. Kirk Smith, deputy commander, U.S. Africa Command. “This mission is an example of what we can accomplish working together with our U.S. government and African partners.” “The United States is here to support the people of Tunisia during this serious health crisis. This oxygen donation is a symbol of the strong partnership between our two nations and will provide immediate relief to COVID-19 patients in hospitals across Tunisia,” said U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia, Donald Blome. U.S. Africa Command purchased the canisters locally in Germany where the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, based out of Kaiserslautern, transported them to Ramstein Air Force Base. U.S. Air Force personnel loaded the cannisters onto pallets and a Tunisian C-130 delivered the donated oxygen to Tunisia.
The purchase was made possible through Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster and Civic Aid Appropriation, which supports the Secretary of Defense and Combatant Commanders’ security cooperation strategies to build local capabilities and cooperative relationships with allies, friends, civil society and potential partners. AFRICOM has been active in assisting its African partners in the fight against COVID-19, supplying everything from field hospitals to Personal Protective Equipment across the continent. To date AFRICOM has provided COVID-19 support to 45 countries on the African continent.

Heavy Rain II: 1st Combat Communications Squadron stays connected
U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron, meet outside of a tactical operations center during exercise Heavy Rain II in Grostenquin, France, July 26. The exercise included agile combat employment dispersal and mission essential tasks to establish communications for an expeditionary base in a contested environment.

The exercise tested the skills of 1st CBCS landing and drop zone safety personnel, who had to overcome communications interference with aircrew to successfully coordinate airdrops. Story and photos by Senior Airman John Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron established and sustained communications in a simulated contested environment during exercise Heavy Rain II in Grostenquin, France, July 19-27. While the joint exercise saw the 1st CBCS as the main players, it included personnel from U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa A6 Spectrum Operations, the 24th Intelligence Squadron, the 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron, the U.S. Joint Spectrum Center, the 352nd Special Operations Squadron, and French and German air force personnel from the Polygone — a multinational aircrew electronic warfare tactics facility. “This exercise highlighted the
importance of electromagnetic spectrum operations (EMSO) for the 1st CBCS,” said U.S. Space Force Sgt. Sergio Huerta, 1st CBCS electromagnetic spectrum operations supervisor. “It fulfilled the 435th Air and Space Communications Group’s intent to train Airmen to operate in contested and degraded environments, familiarize Airmen with EMSO and understand the steps to communicate operational impacts of electromagnetic interference (EMI).” Heavy Rain II began with the 1st CBCS forward deploying a communications fly-away kit to exercise an agile combat employment dispersal event with site setup and rapid establishment of baseline communications. Shortly after, a flexible communications package team arrived, establishing further communications capabilities. “The exercise was an excellent demonstration of how combat

comm responds within contested and congested environments,” Huerta said. “As an exercise planner, it was crucial that Airmen learned the characteristics of EMI, how to mitigate or follow their primary, alternate, contingency and emergency communications plan, and their spectrum interference reporting procedures.” Throughout the exercise, combat communications Airmen practiced detecting and identifying various radio and cyber communications interferences generated by French and German air force counterparts, reporting the event, and resolving the issue to resume correspondence with aircrew and higher headquarters. “It was a pleasure working with our partner nations and gathering their simulated opposition forces perspectives,” Huerta said. “This exercise also helped validate and test their equipment's capabilities.”
Drop zone operations were conducted with an MC-130J Commando II aircraft assigned to the 67th Special Operations Squadron, Royal Air Force, Mildenhall. The exercise tested the skills of 1st CBCS landing and drop zone safety personnel, who had to overcome communications interference with aircrew to successfully coordinate airdrops. “During the exercise, we deployed a portable Doppler radar to forecast weather, successfully accomplished our unit’s first drop zone operation and validated the Air Force's only vehicle-mounted tactical air navigation system, which allows aircraft to safely locate landing zones in inclement weather,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Scott, 1st CBCS landing zone safety officer. “This has been a culmination of three years of training, research and product development.”
Subjecting combat communications personnel to a contested electromagnetic spectrum environment, Heavy Rain II gave Airmen the opportunity to validate and progress ACE capabilities, sharpen expeditionary mindsets and overcome communications interference to establish and secure missionessential connections. “For the last 30 years, combat communications personnel have been deploying almost nonstop, supporting operations and exercises all over the world,” said Lt. Col. Scott Metzler, 435th ACOMG deputy commander. “Our communications and cyber technicians proved during this exercise that although we still have much to learn, we can overcome the kinds of challenges we could face as we prepare for any conflict in a great power competition paradigm. We are extremely proud of our team and are excited about what comes next.”

AOTW escorts RAB through innovation Story and photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Senior Airman James Jones, a controlled movement area escort and project manager assigned to the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week July 22, for his ability to improve processes and find innovative solutions to issues to enhance airfield security at Ramstein Air Base. Jones revamped the escort augmentee program by making it more timely and efficient for the escort augmentees brought from different squadrons. Jones worked with multiple squadrons to increase the security of the airfield. He also found discrepancies within design plans which prevented money and time being wasted. “We made it to where they train back with their units so they can start working right away,” said Jones. “Instead of coming here for a week or two and doing all of the training and not being able to work yet.” Escort augmentees support basewide construction programs in controlled movement areas where civilian contractors require an escort. They make sure that contractors
don’t cross over restricted area lines and stay away from certain areas when aircraft are landing. “He took the program and rebuilt it and gave it continuity,” said Master Sgt. Tania Darder, 86 CES superintendent. “He has been working with airfield managers to ensure that whenever we need military personnel to be augmented to the escort program, we can get them and they are properly trained beforehand and have all of the credentials for the airfield.” Previously, Airmen spent a week getting trained by people like Jones when first arriving for escort augmentee duty. Now Jones has found a way to increase productivity and save time. Jones coordinated with multiple squadrons to find an inexpensive solution and upgrade airfield security by replacing old security barriers. Jones partnered with the 786th CES to replace old barriers with new barrier arms, repurposing previously allocated equipment and increasing airfield security. Jones has consistently made processes at Ramstein run smoothly and efficiently. Jones and a team of engineers were responsible for identifying multiple discrepancies on a $350,000
airfield design project to expand one of NATO’s taxiways. The maps they were planning the design off of were out of date, which Jones caught and ultimately prevented construction workers from breaking ground in the wrong place. “Identifying that not only saves money from the contractors having to readjust, but it also saves time,” said Darder. Jones is currently transitioning between different responsibilities within his career field that will give him more opportunities to display his leadership abilities. “It’s more like being the middleman,” said Jones. “I'll make sure that the projects go smoothly and that the designers get their blueprints when they’re supposed to get them.” Jones has been focusing on escorts and airfield construction with construction season at its peak, but he is also learning how to read and design drawings and how to write up airfield construction waivers for future projects. “He takes things and he runs with it all the way to the end,” said Darder. “He’s one of those behind the scenes people that you don’t realize the value of, but I’ve been fortunate enough to realize his value.”
U.S. Air Force Senior Airman James Jones, a controlled movement area escort and project manager assigned to the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron, shakes hands with USAF Brig. Gen. Joshua Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander at Ramstein Air Base, July 22. Jones was recognized as Airlifter of the Week for his ability to improve processes at Ramstein such as the escort augmentee program. (Right) U.S. Air Force Senior Airman James Jones, a controlled movement area escort and project manager assigned to the 86th Civil Engineering Squadron, shows off his coin at Ramstein Air Base, July 22. Jones’ leadership qualities have helped save Ramstein time and money by finding discrepancies in design plans and repurposing products instead of buying brand new ones.

Doc Mihata bids farewell
by Col (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the entire community as I write this last Medical Minute.
It has been an absolute honor serving with all of you through this global pandemic. On August 11, I will turn the group over to Col Richard McClure. It is only through the prevention efforts of the entire community that we have made it through nearly 18 months with very few hospitalizations, and even fewer
deaths. However, I am saddened as I reflect on the over 4.1 million people who have lost their lives to COVID and related complications. Even as Europe is facing a 4th wave due to the Delta variant, I am confident and optimistic that with the vaccine and with 18 months of experience with COVID that we will be as safe in the current wave.

Thanks to you all and what you do to protect yourselves and our population! Over the past couple months, case count in Germany has slowly but steadily been rising from less than 5/100K to 18/100K. Kaiserslautern county is at 23/100K and the city is at 27/100K. In the rest of Europe, (the UK, Spain, Portugal, among others) we have seen very high case counts in the 400-500/100K range. About 50 percent of our adult cases are in fully vaccinated individuals. Many of these cases are associated with travel to these high incidence locations. This highlights the “why” prevention measures remain important even if you are vaccinated. The vaccine decreases (but does not eliminate) your chance for infection; it significantly decreases your chance for severe illness and death. We continue to have vaccine available for adults – every Thursday and Friday morning Americans with access to the base can get walk-in shots at Building 2116. To date, Ramstein has administered 28K doses of vaccine to protect our entire population. On Saturday the 7th, local medical officials will administer shots to German and partner forces and their families at the CTS storage area from 8 a.m. to noon. Protecting our partners protects us and our mission. Thank you again for teaming with us in our fight against COVID-19. We are all in this together. Together, we will weather the pandemic. Please continue good prevention measures. Wash your hands. Wear your mask. Keep your distance. Get vaccinated. Again, it has been an honor serving with you. #VaccinatedAF. This is Doc Mihata, signing off.

CAP cadet earns solo wings
Story and photos courtesy of the Civil Air Patrol Civil Air Patrol Cadet Clay Dellinger earned his solo wings during an eight-day flight academy conducted by the CAP at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, July 15. Dellinger piloted a CAP Cessna 172 aircraft. “It’s awesome to fly a plane by myself before I can drive a car,” Dellinger said. The CAP annually conducts National Flight Academies across the U.S. where cadets receive formal flight instruction leading to a solo flight in a single-engine aircraft or glider, as well as individual instruction from a Federal Aviation Administration certified flight instructor. In addition to flight instruction, cadets received classroom education on aerodynamics, weather, aviation

physiology, navigation, and regulations. Cadets are also given an opportunity to fly approximately 10 hours with weather and schedule permitting. Dellinger’s experience included two to three daily instructional flights, hands-on training on basic aircraft maintenance and airport operations. “My dream is to be a military pilot,” Dellinger said. “I hope earning my private pilot’s license will help me reach that goal.”
Student pilots must be 17-yearsold in order the take the private pilot practical test. Dellinger hopes to complete his training in Germany shortly after his 17th birthday.

tion of the exercise”, said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Sean Howley, lead firefighter, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron. “It allowed us to get ahead of real world emergencies that could potentially arise on aircraft during the ADR.” The biggest item clarified during the discussion was hydrazine exposure response. Hydrazine is a highly toxic, clear liquid that burns at an extremely high temperature to power the aircraft’s turbine engine during a loss of power situation. “Meetings like this are important because they ensure that both parties can set expectations and establish ground rules”, said Master Sgt. Albert Morales, superintendent, Detachment 1, 52nd Operations Group. “In doing both of those things, we're able to effectively respond to any type of emergency.” Howley, who moderated the discussion, also said that the Airmen from Spangdahlem are excited to continue building upon their relationship with the Polish air force. “Diving into their culture and working side by side with them has been an amazing opportunity”, Howley said. “I just hope that they learn as much from us as we learn from them. The world is always evolving and military readiness is vital to successful operations.”

Army marksman brings home Olympic gold, first medal for US Armed Forces Story and photos by Brittany Nelson IMCOM Public Affairs TOKYO — 1st Lt. Amber English set a new Olympic record when she secured the gold medal in women’s skeet July 26 at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. “I just feel numb right now, this has been a long time coming,” said English moments after she was awarded her gold medal at her Olympic debut. “I feel sheer relief.” To even make it into the final round of the top six athletes, the five-time World Cup medalist
competed in two days of qualification rounds, where she hit 121 of 125 targets. Once in the finals, the Colorado Springs, Colorado native shot 56 out of 60 targets, which set a new Olympic Finals Record. And by medaling, this Soldier became the second woman in American history to win Olympic gold in skeet. English, an Army Reservist, is a member of two elite teams, the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. She spoke about winning while representing both Team USA and the Army. “It is a big honor,” said English. “There is a big sense of patriotism to know when your flag is up during the ceremony. There are a lot of people cheering us on, especially those in the Army.” During the final round of competition, shooters were eliminated one by one until it was just English and Diana Bacosi of Italy. “There was never a moment where I knew I ‘had it in the

I knew going through the last pass I had to hit at least two to tie or three to win.” English joined the Army in 2016 when she said she needed a big change in her life. “It was a great decision,” said English. “The Army has had so many resources to help us prepare for this.” After her win, English sat down with NBC’s The Today show

Quality control inspector provides helpful advice, tips for PCSing Soldiers, families Story and photo by Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support Brigade Europe & Africa Permanent change of duty station moves can be stressful, but the Army Garrisons and Logistics Readiness Centers across Europe have professional and helpful customer support representatives available and always willing to assist Soldiers and families with their needs. Dorothee Frick is one of those people. She’s the lead quality control inspector with LRC RheinlandPfalz’ Baumholder transportation office. With over 32 years in the transportation business as a quality control and quality assistance inspector working for the Army she knows her stuff. “It’s nice to work with the U.S. Soldiers and their families,” said Frick. As an inspector and senior customs border clearance agent with LRC Rheinland-Pfalz, 405th Army Field Support Brigade, Frick said she works with Soldiers and their families as well as the shipping companies, agents and packers who come to the Soldiers’ homes. “Sometimes it’s hard. It can be a real challenge. You want to make everyone happy – the packers and the service members and their families,” said Frick, who was born in Baumholder and has lived here her entire life. Initially in 1979 at the age of 18, Frick took her first job at the
post exchange on the Baumholder installation, supporting Soldiers and families in that capacity, but in 1989 she was hired to work at the transportation office and she’s been there ever since. With that much experience, she has a lot of great advice and tips for Soldiers and their families. When it comes to household goods and unaccompanied baggage pickup, Frick said the Soldier or designated representative must be in the home from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day the moving company is scheduled to be there. “We don’t know exactly when the packers are going to be there,” Frick said. “They send schedules, but things change and sometimes they are not able to follow those schedules. Sometimes we have to call the Soldiers and tell them to please go to their apartments or homes — the moving companies are there waiting. This is valuable time lost and doesn’t help the process.” It would also be nice if the Soldiers and families would be organized and ready on the day the moving company is scheduled to arrive, Frick said. “They don’t have to pack their own stuff, but they need to know what they want to ship in their household goods and their unaccompanied baggage, and what they will carry with them on the plane,” Frick said. “A lot of times the packers arrive and the Soldier and family are not ready. That makes it harder for everyone.”
If the various shipments aren’t separated, marked well or clearly defined for the packers, sometimes they will accidently pack things the Soldier and family don’t want packed, she said. “For example if their passports get packed, we have to go back to the moving companies and open up the shipment — all the crates and boxes — to find the passports and take them out,” said Frick. “They don’t have to necessarily separate everything into piles and move everything around, but they should help to make it simple,” she said. “Some people put stickers on what they want packed. That helps a lot to show this is going, this is not. This helps the packers to be more efficient and makes the entire process better for everyone.” With the current summer surge and issues finding adequate support in the U.S. to assist Soldiers and their families with moving their household goods to Europe and other locations, it’s unclear how much longer Soldiers and families will experience any sort of difficulties with receiving their HHGs here. Nicole Vatcher, a transportation specialist with LRC Wiesbaden, 405th AFSB said it’s important that Soldiers and families are well prepared and they expect in advance the possibility of delayed or late delivery times. “It’s more difficult these days because at the moment we only have five or six companies that work for us — agents, not carri-

ers,” said Frick. “And the agents work with sub contactors. They come from all over the world, and sometimes there are language limitations. Some of them don’t speak English or German. It’s not a big deal but it can make things more difficult. They have to communicate with the Soldiers and their families, just like us.” Just do your homework and be as prepared as possible, said Frick. Take advantage of the installa-

tion’s transportation office, Army Community Service’s lending closet and the installation’s loaner furniture program, said Vatcher. All of these services are available for incoming Soldiers and their families at the Garrisons in Europe. Some simple steps to take to help be better prepared: • Visit the installation transportation office as soon as orders are received. Don’t wait. • Whether this is a first move or 15th, take advantage of counseling. The local transportation office is the best resource of information specific to that location. • If movers cannot be arranged to support the PCS, talk with Soldier’s chain of command immediately to explore options — which may include changes to reporting timelines. • Be patient with the transportation office personnel. They want to solve problems for you. • Contact the local transportation office if moving plans change or when questions or concerns arise during the PCS process.

SOUTH OF FRANCE from Page 1 you’re looking for warmth, relaxation, and fascinating experiences, give Nîmes a try. An amphitheater for the ages When viewed from the sun-drenched, tree-lined neighboring plaza, the Nîmes Amphitheater – or les Arènes de Nîmes, as it’s known locally – looks almost modern. But it isn’t. The beautiful, white, two-story arena with dozens upon dozens of curving archways, was expertly built by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago in the south of what is now France. It was so well constructed, in fact, that today the Nîmes Amphitheater, which can hold up to 24,000 people, is still in the business of hosting events like concerts, bullfights, or the biggest gladiatorial games re-enactment in the world. It also hosts plenty of visitors, who can explore the arena with the help of a fascinating self-guided tour. From the stone benches that also provide great views of the city, one is easily transported to the age of gladiators. A two-thousand-year-old house Another Roman gem is the Maison Carrée, which is located a short walk away from les Arènes de Nîmes. Built before the amphitheater, and finished around 2 A.D. to honor the grandsons of Emperor Augustus, the building is a pristine example of classic Roman architecture. Nowadays, locals take their lunches on the ledges and steep steps next to the stately Corinthian columns. Visitors to the Maison Carrée can view an informative, entertaining and English-subtitled short

film about the Gauls who fought with Julius Caesar and the subsequent history of the founding of Nîmes. Pont du Gard One of the most iconic Roman ruins in the world is also located a half-hour away from Nîmes: the aqueduct known as the Pont du Gard. In fact, it’s unfair to even call the Pont du Gard a ruin. One of the most famous pieces of classical architecture in the world, it remains in spectacular shape. Spanning the River Gardon, where swimmers and kayakers can be found
in nearly every season, the Pont du Gard offers hiking, great views, history, and the chance to marvel at centuries worth of tourists who carved their names in the massive blocks of limestone. Nearby gems: Avignon and Carrières de Lumières The area is also home to other notable — and easily accessible — destinations. Avignon’s breathtaking Palace of the Popes is only an hour from Nîmes. Thirty minutes north of the city, there is also the marvelous and perfectly preserved medieval town of Uzès (pronounced Ooh-
zess), which contains meandering alleys, restaurants, shops, farmers’ markets, and its own version of a leaning tower. Experience world-renowned art like you’ve never experienced it before. Located just outside the hilltop town of Les Baux-de-Provence, the Carrières de Lumières offers an immersive art, sound, light, and motion experience in an old limestone quarry. It’s a fascinating and exhilarating experience. Space is limited inside the quarry, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Learn more at https://www.carrieres-lumieres. com/en. Pont du Gard
