COMUSAFE inducted into Order of the Sword by Staff Sgt. Jessica Hines U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

Airmen, families and friends from around the Air Force gathered to bestow U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s highest enlisted honor to Gen. Frank Gorenc, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander, during an Order of the Sword induction ceremony April 7 on Ramstein. Nominated in late October, Gorenc officially became the 20th inductee into the major command order, reserved for only those who have made significant contributions to the success and support of the Air Force enlisted force in Europe and Africa. “It means a lot to be recognized by the enlisted force,” Gorenc said. “Inside of our Air Force, the enlisted corps is the very foundation of our force, so when that segment of our total force recognizes anyone it is a great honor.” Keeping with tradition, the USAFE-AFAFRICA sword, along with the Air Force Order of the See COMUSAFE, Page 3

Using role players from the Red Cross, a local college and even family members, the goal was to make the training as real as possible. “Role players will be in makeup. Teams will be using equipment they would use in the real world, and we even have pyrotechnics to simulate a catastrophic explosion,” Esra explained.

Motorcyclists spring into right mindset

Lt. Col. Paul Silas, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, talks to other motorcycle riders during an annual preseason motorcycle-safety briefing April 1 on Ramstein. As a fellow motorcyclist, Silas warned riders about being in the right mindset while riding. The 86th Airlift Wing Safety office encourages motorcyclists to get information and guidance from more experienced riders.

As the year rolls into spring, so too will many of the motorcycle riders in the KMC as they come out to enjoy a ride in the warmer weather. In preparation for the increased presence of riders, the 86th Airlift Wing Safety office held a preseason motorcycle-safety briefing April 1 on Ramstein. The briefing is an annual requirement for motorcycle riders and is used as a way to get them back into the right mindset as many of them shake off the dust that may have gathered during the colder months of not riding. “Ten percent of the (Department of Defense) — Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines — ride motorcycles, but they historically account for approximately 50 percent of the traffic-related fatalities,” said Robbie Bogard, 86th Airlift Wing Safety Occupational Safety and Health Administration manager. “Because of that, since the mid-1980s the DOD and all the component services have offered different types of training at government expense to arm them with the skills they need to prevent them from being in mishaps.” While motorcycle accidents don’t

necessarily happen more often than other vehicle accidents, death is a greater possibility due to the vehicle providing less protection to the operator. Because of this, the Department of Defense requires military members to be trained and given knowledge to better protect themselves so they can enjoy their rides safely. The briefing presented information about being in the right mindset, safety measures to keep in mind, and road and motorcycle etiquette, amongst other things. “As a motorcyclist, you are more vulnerable,” Bogard said. “Because you are more vulnerable, you need to take more steps to protect yourself. ... If you’re not in the right mindset and you don’t respect the power your machine is capable of putting out, you can find yourself in harm’s way.” According to Bogard, the majority of motorcycle accidents involve one vehicle and are caused by operator error. However, automobile operators can help keep motorcyclists safe by keeping an eye out for the smaller vehicles. The safety office also spoke about the benefits of finding a mentor rider or a club with which to ride. “We’re presenting information to help, but ultimately it’s up to the

individual to keep themselves safe,” said Senior Master Sgt. Shuntesia Dupree, 86th AW Safety superintendent. “Mentor rides help because a more experienced rider may see you do something dangerous and warn you of it or they can just give you advice to be safer in general.” To further give this idea some weight, the 86th AW Safety office scheduled two group rides — one for sport bikes and one for nonsport bikes — for those people who wanted to and could participate after the briefing. The briefing was open to all DOD members in the KMC, including those individuals who are potential motorcyclists. More than 200 riders and potential riders showed up to the briefings, but that was still less than half of the nearly 500 KMC motorcyclists expected to hit the road this season. For those that missed the briefing, the slides will be provided to commanders and unit motorcycle-safety representatives. For potential riders, the briefing was just the first step to being authorized to ride as a military member. To get a motorcycle endorsement on a U.S. Forces Certificate of License, members must possess a valid stateside motorcycle license and

have taken the Basic Rider Course 1, a two-day training course designed to teach new riders the basics of motorcycle operations. Between six months to a year after taking BRC 1, riders must also take intermediate training, which is either BRC 2, Advanced Rider Course or Military Sport Bike Rider Course. These one-day classes aim to teach or refresh knowledge on more advanced techniques. BRC 2 and ARC are geared toward nonsport bike riders, and MSRC is specifically for sport bike riders. These classes don’t happen without instructors, so the 86th AW Safety office is looking to replace the 32 percent of their rider coaches they have lost. To be a rider coach, members must get their commander’s approval. They must be a frequent rider with a clean driving record, willing to be a role model for less experienced riders, be able to teach at least two training classes, can dedicate two weeks away from work for the Basic Rider Trainer workshop, and have at least two years left on station. “That’s the most important part,” Dupree said. “We pay to make sure you are properly trained, and we want to keep you around to keep our riders safe.”

Sword, embodies its legacy from the same long-standing honor of chivalry and respect founded in the Middle Ages. According to regulation, the custom follows the same act of recognition, in which noncommissioned officers would present a sword to their kings and leaders as the ultimate sign of respect and loyalty. This honor would distinguish the recipient as a “leader among leaders, and a man among men.” Even today, military branches around the world present prestigious swords of honor to recognize the accomplishments and service to their country and fellow men. In the Air Force, the Order of the Sword remains the highest and only honor presented by the noncommissioned officer corps to a senior ranking officer and is maintained by the command chief master sergeant of the designated command. “General Gorenc is a one-of-akind leader,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Davis, USAFE-AFAFRICA ResPoNDeRs, from Page 1

“Being able to work effectively with the German Bundeswehr and THW is an important part of our mission in Europe,” Esra said. For Army Reserve Soldier Spc. Daniel Donaldson, the benefit comes from training directly with organizations he would encounter in the event of a real-work crisis. “An important part of Army civil affairs is ability to work effectively with foreign agencies and local leaders in an affected region,” Donaldson said. “Hands-on training like this and the relationships we forge are more effective and engaging than a classroom PowerPoint presentation. I love doing this kind of training on my weekends.” During the exercise, Donaldson worked with the Bundeswehr’s Major Medical Clinic CologneWahn to evaluate and treat casualties brought in by ambulance. An event like Cobra Strike also benefits all volunteer organizations like the Red Cross and THW. Ralf Essman, a THW commander, worked in their mobile command center during the exercise, directing agencies

to solve the types of infrastructure issues a crisis presents. “Things like the drinking water, power, and search and rescue teams are what we engage in during a disaster,” Essman said. Based out of Mainz, THW has been successfully training with the U.S. Army for the past three years. “For an all-volunteer group, opportunities like this are very exciting,” Essman said. “Training with other organizations exposes you to scenarios you wouldn’t normally experience during our normal classes, the best kind of training.” Esra expects a multinational training event, like Cobra Strike, to be part of their annual training schedule in years to come. “The lessons learned from Cobra Strike will be crucial in driving the planning of next year’s event,” Esra said. “We will also use the lessons learned to increase the effectiveness of our participation at Exercise Anakoda 2016.” Esra also noted that the Serbian military has expressed interest in using the Cobra Strike scenario to train their civil-military cooperation forces. “Each unit involved was

is no one more passionate about the development of our enlisted men and women. General Gorenc embodies the ideals of what the Order of the Sword represents: truth, justice and power rightfully used.” Gorenc has proven time and time

again that he is worthy of this recognition. Days after taking command at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, in 2003, Hurricane Isabel threatened the safety and well-being of the Airmen he was charged to lead. His quick and decisive actions kept his Airmen and their families out of harm’s way, despite the multimillion-dollar damage caused to the base by the storm. During his career Gorenc dedicated his time to serving Airmen, and this night was their chance to thank him. “I’m overwhelmed by the fact that somebody thought enough of my work in the Air Force to say, ‘You deserve this award, you have helped out the enlisted force and you have developed an environment where all Airmen can succeed,’” Gorenc said. “It was such a validation and representation of everything that I have worked for in the past 37 years on active duty. It was really special.” The USAFE-AFAFRICA Order of the Sword is on display at the command headquarters building, Airman Heritage hall.

Frankfurt USO closes

The USO permanently closed its center at the Frankfurt International Airport due to several operational factors. Over the past three years, the center has seen a decline in the number of visitors utilizing the facility, as a result of the shift of arriving military personnel and their families from Frankfurt to Ramstein. The location now primarily serves as a spot for visitors to wait for commercial shuttles to local installations. Additionally, force protection and security concerns coupled with limited and costly options to reduce risk contributed to the decision.

Deadline for income tax filing will be here soon Courtesy of the Ramstein Tax Center The traditional April 15 deadline for filing taxes falls on April 18 this year. Most active-duty personnel stationed overseas are granted an automatic extension making their tax returns due by June 15, but there is a caveat. If a taxpayer owes money then the tax is due April 18, and interest will accrue if payment is delayed. If you are unsure whether you will owe, it’s a good idea to get your filing done early. The Ramstein Tax Center, located in the Ramstein Law Center, provides free tax assistance to qualifying active-duty service members, retirees and military dependents. Unit tax advisors provide assistance in filing current-year tax returns for both federal and state governments. In a few cases, they may also be able to help amend prior years’ returns and provide additional tax and IRS-related services, in accordance with AFI 51-504, “Taxes.” “As Air Force judge advocates, we provide

community members with legal assistance,” said Capt. Ramiro Guerrero, 86th Airlift Wing Tax Center officer in charge. “One of the ways we can provide that assistance is through tax help.” Unit tax advisors are certified through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to assist customers with tax preparation and questions. The VITA program prepares UTAs to address military-specific tax issues. “Please keep in mind that the VITA-trained UTAs are not tax experts,” Guerrero said. “Complex returns should be drafted by tax professionals, the fee for which is often deductible in the following year.” The Ramstein Tax Center is located in Bldg. 2137, across from the South Side Fitness Center tennis courts, and is open for appointments throughout the week. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command also has an active tax program with three tax centers in the KMC. The Kaiserslautern Tax Assistance Center

is located on Kleber Kaserne, Bldg. 3210, room 101, and can be reached at 0631-411-7688 or 483-7688. The Pulaski Tax Assistance Center is located on Pulaski Barracks, Bldg. 2886, and can be reached at 0631-3406-4300 or 493-4300. And new this year, the Landstuhl Tax Assistance Center is located at the Landstuhl Heliport, Bldg. 3386. Taxpayers should bring their W-2s and other income documents, such as rents received, interest documents, financial transaction sales or exchanges documents and retirement payment forms, as well as social security cards for all persons listed on the return, bank account and routing number information and documents related to education expenses or child care expenses. If in doubt, go ahead and bring it in. The UTA can help identify what is and what is not necessary. Bringing last year’s return can also help, so bring it if it’s available. To set up an appointment, call 06371-47-1040 or 480-1040.

86th AW, 435th AGOW communicate through EO Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing Equal Opportunity office conducted an “out-and-about” with 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Airmen to ensure Airmen are being treated fairly, communicating effectively and satisfied with their workplaces. The Airmen had the opportunity to speak with Tech. Sgt. Shajita Rios, 86th AW EO advisor, about the positive aspects of their workplace as well as areas needing improvement. “When we come into a unit, it gives those Airmen the opportunity to know who’s in their equal opportunity organization but also allows them to talk to us about anything they want to, whether it’s things they’d like to see improved or the positive things,” Rios said. “When we talk to them, it’s completely anonymous. Once we’ve gathered information from anyone who wants to speak with us, we take that information and channel it to the commander, again, without using any names. It’s a good way for them to be heard and see the changes made without it impacting them individually.” The 435th AGOW consists of more than 1,400 personnel divided into three groups and nine squadrons with 11 geographically separated units located across eight sites. Because the wing is so versatile, Bryan Osborne, 86th AW EO director and 86th AW alternative dispute

Tech. Sgt. Shajita Rios, 86th Airlift Wing Equal Opportunity advisor, talks with a 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Airman about the wing’s versatility during an “out-and-about” March 17 on Ramstein. resolution manager, said it’s important to ensure they’re as cohesive as possible. “Because they have such a farreaching mission, (deploy) and are an organization with a lot of people with different skill sets, it’s important for the commander to know what the human-relations climate is,” Osborne said. “How people relate and treat each other is a huge aspect of mission accomplishment. “The equal opportunity program is a force multiplier,” Osborne continued. “If people have their minds on unlawful discrimination or an unprofessional work environment, how can a commander expect those individuals to be focused on the mission? Our out-and-about program is a great way for a trained EO specialist to visit a unit over a

couple of days and provide a realtime snapshot of the human relations climate.” Osborne said the EO visit may show that people are under a lot of stress and strain and under different mission requirements than the commander believed. “I recently heard the 86th AW commander (Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas) say that EO and other helping agencies are so important because sometimes people need someone to talk to, and they need to be heard,” Osborne said. “The EO office doesn’t just process complaints. We try to get people the assistance they need even if they don’t choose to file an EO complaint. If people are happy and satisfied and can focus their efforts on the mission, everybody wins — the

tax payers, wingmen and the people who are recipients of our services. Everyone’s satisfied because the mission is getting done.” Despite being a many-faceted wing, Rios said her feedback from the Airmen continues to improve. “When we get to the heart of a lot of the issues, some are personality conflicts,” Rios said. “Because the 435th AGOW is so versatile, I could see that being common because everyone is coming from separate units. I believe they’re doing a great job because they all began in very different places and have made a lot of changes. I think they definitely understand the importance of cohesiveness and being a team.” When it comes to EO visiting units, Rios said the overall goal is to ensure everyone benefits from the experience. “I think there’s a stigma when people know equal opportunity is coming around,” Rios said. “We’re here to make sure everything is as fair as possible and to give every Airman a voice. Most people love their units but may think it could be better with some changes, and I think that’s so important at this time because we’re (downsizing) and don’t have the same resources we used to. It’s already difficult; no one needs the added stress of discrimination or harassment.” Through the 86th EO office, Airmen have the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions for the betterment of their unit. With a positive and effective work environment, Airmen can concentrate on the mission.

KMCC parents learn more about crying infants Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Babies can cry up to six hours a day trying to tell their mothers or fathers they want something. From having a full diaper to feeling sick, infants have a very limited way of communicating. To help ease new parents into the realm of taking care of infants, Ramstein New Parent Support Program brought them together for “Purple Crying: Understanding your Crying Baby” April 6 at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. The event allowed parents to exchange open dialogue with nurses and other child care professionals about how to handle their crying children and tips on how to read their body language to further understand what they want. According to Barbara Cox, Family Advocacy outreach manager, parents’ lack of understanding of what their babies want is a large source of frustration, and that’s why this problem is the first to be brought to the community’s awareness. “Sometimes, parents try different things, and nothing seems to help their baby,” Cox said. “We want to help instill confidence in parents by helping them with all of the resources that are available to them for free.” The occasion is set amidst National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a program that helps build strong, nurturing communities that are supportive of families. It also builds awareness of how they can

play a role in preventing child abuse and neglect by promoting child and family well-being. The acronym PURPLE is used to describe specific characteristics of an infant’s crying during this phase and let parents and caregivers know that what they are experiencing is indeed normal and, although frustrating, is simply a phase in their child’s development that will pass. According to Sara Jordan, the display was a great reminder of how easy it can be to get frustrated at your child and why it’s important to come together

as a community to learn examples on becoming better at understanding children. “It does get very frustrating when I feel like nothing I do can help my child,” Jordan said. “What I enjoy about these kinds of events is getting together with other moms and learning more about parenting from them.” For information on Child Abuse Prevention Month and how to help spread awareness, call Ramstein New Parent Support at 479-2098 or 06371-46-2098.

Agility, flexibility: 521st AMOW on Turkey departure by Staff Sgt. Armando Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Department of State and Secretary of Defense approved the ordered departure of dependents from bases across Turkey. Yet even before the flow of families arrived at Ramstein, a fleet of Airmen from the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing were getting ready to make their transition as fluid as possible. The 721st Aerial Port Squadron at Ramstein and the 728th Air Mobility Squadron at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, both part of the 521st AMOW, kept in constant contact to ensure a smooth transition for the departing passengers. The 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintenance and support Airmen diagnosed and repaired two C-17 Globemaster III continually making flights between Ramstein and Turkey. The 721st APS logistics crews kept the bags and cargo moving, and Airmen from the 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron Air Mobility Control Center provided updated timing, coordination and notifications. “I am proud of the flexibility and tenacity demonstrated by the Airmen of the 521st AMOW,” said Col. Charles Henderson, 521st AMOW vice commander. “Their dedication to customer service and team spirit made the ordered departure go as smoothly as

possible and contributed greatly to its success. This event only proves that America, our Airmen and their families can depend on us!” The AMOW had their Airmen at the right time and place, which allowed them to react quickly and prevent many dependents from being stranded on Ramstein. The 313th EOSS AMCC worked side by side with the 721st AMXS, APS and the Tanker and Airlift Control Center to redirect a C-17 to be reconfigured and rescheduled to ensure passenger travel was not delayed. At the same time, the 721st APS passenger terminal mirrored the efforts of the 313th EOSS.

“What we tried to do is ease the stress of travel for the family members and take care of their needs as they came in (to the passenger terminal),” said Senior Master Sgt. Holland, 721st APS. “I can imagine myself being down range and getting the notification that my family is leaving in a few hours. I would want someone to assist them.” Air Mobility Command’s premier mobility wing in Europe worked long hours shifting pets and luggage and coordinating with base agencies to ensure the dependents had a one-stop shop to transition into Ramstein. “It has been impressive to watch so

many of our base organizations come together and be prepared to help our Air Force family members as soon as they get here,” said Master Sgt. Chad Oswald, 721st APS passenger operations NCO in charge. “I think we are really ready for anything. Some of the agencies that are set up to help the incoming travelers include precoordinated hotel reservations and customs procedures, American Red Cross services, travel specialist to assist with onward travel reservations and many others.” Airmen from Ramstein gathered to support. One of them was Master Sgt. Steven Williams, 435th Construction and Training Squadron first sergeant, who gave his time to answer questions, offer advice, and escort and support the families in any way possible. According to Williams, the effort the 521st AMOW provided was appreciated. “As their first sergeant, I am constantly in contact with the families,” Williams said. “I have received great reviews from the families on the support they have received. I want to thank Ramstein Airmen, key spouses and all the agencies for their outpouring support.” The ability to provide airlift takes training and preparation, Henderson said, yet the AMOW’s efforts before and during the departure ensured more than 800 Air Force family members assimilated into Ramstein and back to the U.S. as smoothly as possible.

New commander, busy schedule for 361st Civil Affairs Brigade Story and photo by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The 361st Civil Affairs Brigade has a new commander but will remain a very busy unit with missions throughout Europe and beyond. Col. Miguel Castellanos relinquished command of the Army Reserve brigade to Col. John Novak April 3 during an outdoor ceremony. The 361st is a subordinate unit of the 7th Mission Support Command, both headquartered in Kaiserslautern. “It’s been three years since I assumed command of the 361st, and to date, this assignment stands as the highlight of my 32 years of service,” Castellanos said before thank-

ing his family for their support throughout his career. The brigade has units in Germany and Italy and has conducted missions, operations and exercises in more than 38 countries on three continents, Castellanos said. “It’s truly been an honor to serve as the commander of the 361st, and I feel without a doubt this brigade is the most relevant brigade in the Army Reserve,” Castellanos said. Some of the units are engaged in real-word missions or training and were only partially represented during the ceremony, Castellanos added. For example, the 773rd Civil Support Team is engaged in a major exercise in Rota, Spain. Also, Soldiers from the

361st are involved in Atlantic Resolve in Eastern Europe and Echo Casemate in France, where junior leaders are in charge of a movement control mission facilitating border crossing with NATO allies. In addition, Charlie Company of the 457th Civil Affairs Battalion, one of the 361st subordinate units, just completed an exercise in conjunction with German Bundeswehr soldiers, members of the German Red Cross and civilian volunteers for the German Technical Assistance Service during Cobra Strike in Wiesbaden. “Another unique fact about the 361st is that it’s the only civil affairs brigade with one See commander, Page 11

721st cargo can change lives Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Armando Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Copy, KC-10 coming down in 10 mike. Get a K-loader, crew and stairs to it. Forty cargo pallets to final down range. “Wait, what cargo? Where is it going? Why is it important?” are just a few of the questions an onlooker may ask themselves as thousands of pounds of cargo is moved everyday by the Airmen of the 721st Aerial Port Squadron. The 40 pallets that were moved March 25 are part of the Denton Program. The program is a Department of Defense initiative that moves humanitarian cargo donated by U.S.-based nongovernmental organizations to developing nations to ease human suffering. The cargo the 721st APS handled contained more than 285,000 meals for children in need. “I believe the job my Airmen did today is awesome,” said Capt. Teresa Crampton, 721st APS air freight flight commander. “A lot of the time, the first thing that comes to mind when we think military is hurting the bad guys, dropping bombs on target. However, there is a large and exciting

KC-10 Extender and helped coordinate the movement onto another cargo aircraft heading to its final location. According to the Airmen of the 76th ARS, an Air Force Reserve crew and Ramstein Airmen, they had extra motivation once they learned their impact. “It’s rewarding to know the cargo I am helping move is going to help someone,” said Airman Celeste Trembley, 721st APS ramp service specialist. “It’s also great to work alongside a reservist crew who is as excited as we are to do this job.” Denton cargo only moves on military aircraft on a space-available status. Many hours of coordination were required both in and out of the United States. Dale Teeter, 721st APS Air Terminal Operations Center duty officer, helped coordinate the event not only to get it to Ramstein but also for the cargo to reach its destination. “This type of event feels good when it comes together,” Teeter said. “You feel a sense of accomplishment. We spent hours coordinating, making sure we could get this food to people who need it. I am glad I was part of that process.” No matter the part that they played in processing the Denton cargo, the Airmen of the 721st APS are proud to have had a hand in providing food and hope for people in need, and it is just one of many missions accomplished on the ramps of Ramstein.

assigned civil affairs battalion, a movement control battalion, a civil support team … a human resource company (and) a forward engineer support team,” Castellanos said. The wide range of capabilities has enabled the unit to leverage its variety of skills during its missions, Castellanos added. “Col. Castellanos inspired leaders around him to engage, get involved and be ready,” said Brig. Gen. Arlan DeBlieck, commanding general of the Army Reserve’s 7th MSC and deputy commanding general of the active-duty 21st Theater Sustainment Brigade. “Utilizing small teams of energetic, competent Soldiers, you develope enduring relationships with sister services, allies, partners, U.N. and NATO agencies.” DeBlieck cited a number of examples of Castellanos’ work with international allies and partners, starting with using NATO certified Civil Military Center of Excellence instructors who helped to build positive relationships. He also cited the unit’s development of hybrid movement control teams that include civil affairs and transportation Soldiers who are employed in Atlantic Resolve and Echo Casemate. They have helped to facilitate freedom of movement across borders in Europe. Castellanos matured relations with U.S. 6th Fleet’s Commander Task Force-68 Sailors and Marines while sup-

porting Spanish and Ukrainian natural disaster management exercises, DeBlieck said. This provided a common understanding for military to civilian support during disasters and building host nation capacity to respond. The 361st makes up about two-thirds of the 7th MSC, DeBlieck said. “These efforts supported Strong Europe tenets, but as importantly, (they) provided opportunities for our Soldiers to engage in meaningful and valued activities that support the total Army force in Europe,” DeBlieck added. Novak comes to the 361st after serving as a member of the Army Reserve’s Office of Legislative Affairs. “I am humbled, honored and excited to have been selected to command such a unique, relevant and forwarddeployed Army brigade … at such an interesting time and place in our nation’s history,” Novak said. Novak’s mother immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia more than 60 years ago, he said. “Her family’s experiences before and after that journey, more than anything else, drove my decision to seek a life of service to the nation that gave them an opportunity to live in peace and freedom,” Novak said. “The opportunity to lead and care for America’s sons and daughters in a place so near to where their odyssey began, and to my wife’s roots in Eastern Europe, makes this assignment particularly poignant to both of us.”

Ingredients (for 4 people)

• • • • • •

6 tablespoons coconut flakes 6 bananas 3 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons fresh liquid honey 2 tablespoons lime juice 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream

Egg nogg whipped cream for topping if desired (you can get this in some of the larger grocery stores on the economy. It is rare but it is a very nice finishing touch to your desserts). In a non-stick pan, slightly roast the coconut flakes on medium heat until they are golden brown. No fat is needed for this process. Put aside on a plate to cool.

Peel bananas. Cut them in half lengthwise. Use two pans if your pan doesn’t hold all 12 banana halves. Divide the butter in half if you use two pans. Heat the butter on medium heat. Add bananas. Roast 2 minutes on both sides. Then add the honey and lime juice. Turn the heat off. Put a lid on the pan, allowing the bananas to soak up the honey and lime juice. Put the bananas on 4 plates. Drizzle the sauce over the bananas. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of coconut flakes over all bananas. Roll your scoops of vanilla ice cream into the remaining coconut flakes. Put coconut ice cream ball on plate. Add Egg nogg whipped cream as desired.

Bowling for supervision, leadership with ‘The Huddle’ Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The cracking sounds of bowling pins being violently struck and shuffled to the back of the lane are a fitting background noise as a small group of young Airmen receive drops of wisdom from several senior enlisted visitors. One of the guests to stop by the senior NCO-led monthly meeting, nicknamed “The Huddle,” is Chief Master Sgt. Kaleth Wright, 3rd Air Force command chief. He rounds up the young group of Airmen to share his slice of advice on leading peers. “One thing I don’t want you to do with all this knowledge is keep it to yourself,” Wright said. “I want you to share this with your friends in your dorm and at work.” The Airmen nod their heads in understanding and know that if there’s one thing they will take from The Huddle it’s to share the knowledge they are given by people with years of experience in the Air Force. The Huddle is a developmental program geared toward building rapport and providing a mentorship network for Airmen and NCOs. Its concept

starts in the First Term Airmen Center and is revisited through informal gatherings designed to mature and expand established relationships as well as promote personal and professional growth. According to Master Sgt. Terrance Ladd, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels operations section chief, The Huddle gives Airmen the opportunity to learn and spend time with senior NCOs in an environment more comfortable to them. “The Huddle (favors fostering) communication outside the normal

work environments and offices to a more relaxed setting that would hopefully promote honest (feedback), from both the mentors and Airmen,” Ladd said. Attendees are invited to enjoy themselves while interacting with the senior NCOs that host the events. According to Airman Annabell Ryan, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels apprentice, this wasn’t difficult. “I had a blast bowling with the senior NCOs,” Ryan said. “I’d like to see more people show up for The Huddle because it gives us Airmen

more time to interact with them.” Master Sgt. Dejon Franklin, U.S. Air Forces in Europe command fuels equipment manager, believes that the fun and enjoyment is also a reminder that supervisors care. “It helps in the development of the Airmen because it shows that senior NCOs have time for them,” Franklin said. “When I was a younger Airman, I remember feeling just the opposite. I feel Airmen learn best by the example from consistent and transparent leaders.” Whether there are bowling pins cracking in the background or basketballs pinging off the backboard, the environments are varied and aren’t the normal locations someone would hold a meeting. However, with the goal of building relationships and mentorship networks, The Huddle provides the opportunity of developing oneself in an informal setting and is only beneficial to all involved. For anyone interested in getting involved or has questions about The Huddle, one can attend these meetings on the last Thursday of every month. If there are any questions, contact Senior Master Sgt. Dan Kenemore or Senior Master Sgt. Demarcus Tate.

Gartenschau lures with displays, flowers, activities Story and photos by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Gartenschau Kaiserslautern, also known as dinosaur park, is open again from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The motto for flowers to be seen is “Sky Blue to Sunset Red.” The Gartenschau features various gardens to include a rose garden, cactus garden, rhododendron garden, bible garden and dance garden on an area of 54 acres. Every month, new flower exhibitions will display how exceptional flowers are in the flower hall. In addition to enjoying

the horticultural show, visitors will be able to admire special exhibitions, activities, entertainment and dinosaurs through Oct. 31. “Last year we welcomed about 520,000 visitors,” said David Lyle, chief of iKL, a nonprofit social integration enterprise in charge of Gartenschau Kaiserslautern. “Besides being a leisure park where people have fun, it’s our goal to give disabled people a job at the Gartenschau and integrate them into our society. Thus, the park is also a social project,” Lyle said. This year, the newly setup Lego exhibition showcases renowned buildings such as the Capitol in Washington,

Visiting fascinating, beautiful Malta My husband and I weren’t quite sure what to expect when we escaped the dreary Kaiserslautern weather for a week in the sunshine of Malta. It seemed like a remote and romantic place, with its history of pirates and knights, invaders and heroes, shipwrecks, sieges and battles. Malta is a country of three small rocky islands that sits just 60 miles south of Sicily in the Mediterranean. The landscape is rocky and beautiful with white limestone medieval hilltop cities rising above plains of villages and small garden plots subdivided by rock walls. Views of the Mediterranean are stunning. We were entranced by life in the old cities, built by the Knights of St. John to deter invasions of the islands. It is fun to get lost in the steep, narrow streets, finding hidden treasures of wine caves and restaurants, small shops selling specialty goods like glass and filigree jewelry, street vendors with local baked treats like passtizi or qassat, a delectable pastries filled with peas, ricotta cheese or whipped cream, and small plazas with cafes to enjoy a coffee or a fine local wine. Malta is a photographer’s dream with it’s old shop signs, painted wooden balconies, graceful doorways with ornamental gates, medieval architecture of grand palaces and churches, stray cats

sunning themselves on crumbling stone walls. We found Maltese natives to be friendly and helpful, and we fell into some interesting conversations with young and old people, which ranged from the education system in Malta to American politics. There was no language barrier, as the Maltese speak English in addition to Maltese. The food is superb. My husband tried the local specialty of rabbit stew served over spaghetti, and I enjoyed beautifully-prepared fresh fish. We also enjoyed the local wines, both red and white. It is highly recommended to take tours in Malta, which will help you truly appreciate the rich history and culture and give you easier access to places like the Azure Window, blue caves and archaeological sites. Buses are the main form of transportation, and for €1.50, you can go just about anywhere on the main

islands of Malta and Gozo. A ferry service connects these islands. Renting a car is not advised. Malta has the highest road accident rate in Europe; people drive on the left, the roads are narrow and speed limits and use of indicators seem to be optional. There are lots of hotels to choose from. We rented an apartment which gave us the experience of living like a local. Malta has a fascinating history. It’s been a strategic country since trading began in the ancient world. Stonehengelike temples on the main island were built 1,000 years before the pyramids of Egypt. Malta had a succession of conquering forces, including the Phoenicians; Romans; Arabs; Spanish; French; Knights of St. John, which survived a terrible siege by the Ottoman empire; Napoleon, who stayed all of six days; and the British, who helped the Maltese oust the French. History came to a

head for Malta during World War II when the Nazi regime decided to bomb Malta out of existence. Malta was bombed night and day for 2 1/2 years but refused to surrender, earning the Maltese the Order of St. George at the end of the war. Eisenhower, Patton and Montgomery met in secret war rooms built in bunkers below the city to plan the defense of Malta and the move of Allied troops into Italy. Tours of the Lascaris War Rooms, the War Museum, grand palaces and St. John’s Co-Cathedral give insights into the country’s history. Malta did not become an independent country until 1964. The Maltese are resilient and deeply religious people. Graceful and ornate churches KAISERSLAUTERN

55 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF MK MÖBEL

About 55 years ago, on March 25, 1961 the company KringsMaraite was founded by Albert Krings and Martha Maraite. During this time there were no showrooms available, so the furniture was displayed at the “Hünniger Saal - Johanns Terren” (an adjacent room to the family property). The furniture store expanded in 1963, 1966 and 1969. In 1963 a two-story furniture store of 4736 square feet was constructed beside the Krings-Maraite family home that had already been built in 1956. In 1966 and 1969 an additional

two-story space was added to the original building, adding 5381 square feet and 7534 square feet to the showroom space. In 1971 the store was again extended with an additional 10763 square feet. In the last great building phase in 1973 a basement was added measuring 23680 square feet. In ten years, the Krings-Maraite family extended their Showroom from 4736 square feet to 53819 square feet. On July 22, 1979, the whole store and the family house burned down to the ground (see picture below).

Only the vehicle fleet survived the fire.

Nevertheless, the Krings-Maraite family did not lose their courage and immediately started to rebuild their store. The doors of the newly rebuilt store were open for customers in just nine months after the fire. This time the store would be bigger than ever before. Over 3000 visitors celebrated the reopening of the

64583 square foot store. In 1989 a 21527 square foot storage facility was built that would allow the family to use the old storage room inside the main building as a new showcase for their customers. MK Möbel is located at the KMC Mall and Römerstrasse-Hünnigen 7, B-4780 St. Vith, Belgium (1 hour 40 minutes from Ktown) Open every day except Monday — Check out their ads in the Kaiserslautern American and Herald-Union and also the FINDIT GUIDE Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden issues. www.mkkrings.com
