Martinez, a San Diego-based Navy submariner veteran and new owner of Miramar Postal Plus, to explore his journey from confined underwater missions to leading a vital community hub supporting military families, veterans, and local businesses. SDVM: What inspired you to join the Navy, and why submarines? Michael: I enlisted to honor a deep family legacy. My grandfather dreamed of his ten children serving, but none did. My father carried that hope, yet among my siblings and 27 cousins, I was the first. Submarines drew me in—their intense demand for precision, teamwork, and endurance mirrored the standard I wanted to uphold. In those confined depths, every action mattered; we operated as one unit, relying on each other in high-stakes silence. SDVM: What key lessons from service shape you today? Michael: Submarine life forged unbreakable resilience and discipline. But it also planted challenges that surfaced later—isolation, the weight of responsibility. Those experiences taught me that true strength lies in owning vulnerabilities, persisting through darkness, and emerging with deeper empathy for others facing silent battles. SDVM: Transition to civilian life is tough for many veterans. How has yours unfolded? Michael: It’s been profoundly difficult—and ongoing. After separating in late 2017, I returned to college in 2018, retaking classes amid anger and self-pity, feeling invisible in an indifferent world. Belonging slipped away—at home with my wife and family, in school, in society. COVID intensified everything; the suicide of a colleague reopened old wounds, leading me to withdraw entirely. We moved six times in five years while I supported my wife and four children. Overwhelming at times, yes—but I refocused through audiobooks (reading was hard), setting five-year goals within a ten-year vision. Gratitude became my lifeline. Tracking failures, not just wins, fueled growth. Transition isn’t a destination; it’s a mission that demands daily commitment. 48
