15 OLIVA LIBROS

Kauria Close, Lavington, Nairobi, Kenya

It’s hard not to smile upon stepping inside Cheche Books in the Lavington neighborhood of Nairobi. The cheerful store is filled with bright colors and patterns and mural-decorated walls. Cheche Books opened in 2020 as an independent Pan-African feminist bookstore, café and event space, and the mission of its founder, Ubax Abdi, is to make books by African and diaspora writers more affordable and accessible to local readers. The store also serves as a cultural hub for the community with readings, film screenings, music sessions and exhibitions. Curl up with a good book on the porch beneath the mural of influential women, such as Toni Morrison, Winnie Mandela, Wangari Maathai, Alice Walker, and Mariama Bâ.
