Infant/Toddler Care Certificate (C55290) The Infant/Toddler Care certificate prepared individuals to work with children from infancy to three years of age in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories, competencybased knowledge, and practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Coursework includes infant/toddler growth and development, physical/nutritional needs of infants and toddlers, safety issues in the care of infants and toddlers, care and guidance, communication skills with parents and children; design and implementation of appropriate curriculum; and other related topics. Graduates should be prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate infant/toddler programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and child care programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Early Head Start programs, and other infant/ toddler programs.

Specific Program Requirements 1. General college admission requirements. 2. According to GS 110-91, “No person shall be an operator of nor be employed in a child care facility who has been convicted of a crime involving child neglect, child abuse, or moral turpitude, or who is a habitually excessive user of alcohol or who illegally uses narcotic or other impairing drugs, or who is mentally or emotionally impaired to an extent that may be injurious to children.” 3. Teacher Preparation Associate The Associate in Arts and the Associate of Science in Teacher Preparation degrees prepare individuals who desire to become K-12 educators for transfer. These transfer degrees will provide students with a program of study comprised of college transfer courses and a small concentration of education coursework. The general education courses provide students with a well-rounded education that focuses on the humanities, STEM subjects, and the social behavioral sciences. The education concentration includes an overview of the American educational system; an introduction to teaching and learning concepts that are developmentally appropriate, effective, inclusive, and culturally responsive to all children; literacy development and instructional strategies to support all learners; and an introduction to the teacher licensure process. The remainder of the degree program will focus on general education outcomes with individualized education plans to support the student’s desired grade-level and content area foci. The Associate of Arts in Teacher Preparation degree is appropriate for students who desire to teach Elementary Education (K-6), Middle Grades Education (6-8) in non-STEM subject areas, and Secondary Education (9-12) in non-STEM areas, as well as other specialized content areas such as Special Education. The Associate of Science in Teacher Preparation degree is appropriate for student who desire to teach Middle Grades Education (6-8) in STEM subject areas and Secondary Education (9-12) in STEM subject areas. Graduates are prepared to transfer to a senior institution to complete their pursuit of the necessary bachelor’s degree and earn an NC Teaching License in the grade level and content area of their choosing. Students must meet applicable admissions criteria and policies designated by, and earn admission into the education programs at the senior institution. These criteria and admissions requirements may include (but are not limited to) minimum GPA and Praxis Core scores and their associated timelines, as published by each university’s schools of education programs.
