Love, Purpose, and the Power of Faith

Love fuels purpose, strengthens faith, and transforms lives. In this issue of VBD Magazine, we celebrate love—not just in its romantic form, but in its many expressions: love for God, for our purpose, for those we serve, and for the dreams we are called to pursue. More than a feeling, love is the heartbeat of faith, the foundation of meaningful relationships, and the spark that ignites lasting transformation.

Our cover feature turns the spotlight on Dr. Velma Bagby, whose wisdom and faith-centered approach to love and marriage have helped many build strong, God-centered relationships. She provides a biblical framework for navigating dating, marriage, and purposeful connections. Also featured is Suzanna (Zan) Hyde, a model, advocate, and law student, whose journey bridges the worlds of fashion and justice. Her story is one of perseverance, cultural pride, and a commitment to breaking barriers.

Throughout this issue, we also introduce faith-driven leaders making an impact in their communities. These individuals remind us that success is about serving others, uplifting those around us, and walking boldly in our divine calling. Additionally, our Transformative Reads section presents five powerful book recommendations that will deepen your faith, expand your perspective, and inspire your personal growth.

As you explore this issue, I pray you find inspiration, encouragement, and the motivation to live with intention. May you be empowered to move forward in faith, love deeply, and embrace the journey God has set before you.

Stay safe, stay connected, and as always, stay victorious. Enjoy this issue.

AND ADVOCACY

SUZANNA (ZAN) HYDE’S STORY OF FASHION

From the sun-soaked shores of Montego Bay, Jamaica, to the global runways of high fashion and the demanding halls of law school, Suzanna (Zan) Hyde is a shining example of the power of vision, resilience, and faith. As an international fashion model and a Juris Doctor student, Zan’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

In a vibrant Zoom interview with VBD Magazine, Zan’s authenticity and passion illuminated every moment as she candidly shared the milestones, challenges, and inspirations that have defined her path. Her story not only shows how she balances two demanding careers with grace and determination but also highlights her commitment to defying expectations and staying true to her values. Zan’s journey demonstrates the possibilities that arise when talent meets purpose, and her inspiring story offers valuable insights for anyone striving to make their dreams a reality.

FOUNDATIONS OF SUCCESS

Growing up in Montego Bay, Zan attended Mount Alvernia Prep and High School, where her mother, a dedicated educator, instilled the values of discipline and excellence. “I was heavily involved in speech and drama, track and field, and karate. My mom kept us very busy,” she shared. Among her early achievements, Zan won a national award in speech and drama in Grade 6 (middle school) and served as a child ambassador for Jamaica’s Office of the Children’s Registry, where she passionately advocated against child abuse.

Reflecting on her childhood, Zan credits these early experiences for laying the groundwork for her success. “Looking back, I realize that God was preparing

I’VE PRAYED THROUGH MANY CHALLENGING MOMENTS. THERE WAS ONE INSTANCE WHERE I COULDN’T SEE HOW I’D MANAGE FINALS, MODELING COMMITMENTS, AND WORK, BUT GOD PROVIDED A WAY.

me for greater things. Every opportunity seemed to align perfectly, and I see now how they all fit together.”

STEPPING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT

Zan Hyde’s journey into the world of fashion began with a moment that felt almost divinely orchestrated. “I was always inspired by women like Lisa Hanna, Yendi Phillipps, Kaci Fennell, and Davina Bennett—women who proudly represented Jamaica on the global stage,” she shared. “One day, when I was in high school, I told my mom I wanted to try modeling.”

Not long after that conversation, fate stepped in. Pulse Modeling Agency visited her school, and an unexpected opportunity arose. “My principal, Stacy Reynolds, introduced me to the Pulse team and asked me to take them around the school. I couldn’t believe it—it felt like a move of God. Of course, the rest is history.”

Determined to pursue her passion, Zan entered the Pulse Caribbean Model Search competition in 2019, ultimately securing second place. “I didn’t win the international contract I wanted, but

I didn’t give up,” she said. Instead, she remained focused, balancing her modeling aspirations with her academic goals. After high school, she attended Howard University, her “dream school,” where she earned a degree in political science with a minor in theatre arts.

Zan’s persistence paid off. She has since graced the pages of Harper’s Bazaar and walked for prestigious fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Rick Owens. Today, she

is signed with Elite Model Management New York City and Wilhelmina in Miami and London, continuing to carve out a remarkable career on the global stage.

A LOVE FOR JAMAICA

Zan’s deep-rooted pride in her Jamaican heritage took center stage when she became the face of Parisian fashion brand Tressé. The campaign, a breathtaking tribute to Jamaica, allowed her to reconnect with her roots in a truly meaningful way.

Shot on the island’s picturesque shores, the collection—dubbed the “Jamaica Suitcase”—was described by Tressé as an “ode to Jamaica, the Jewel of the Caribbean, land of passion and shimmering colors.”

For Zan, the experience was more than just a fashion shoot; it was a celebration of her culture. “The shoot captured the beauty of Jamaica—our beaches, hills, and vibrant culture. It was an incredibly proud moment to showcase my heritage on such a global platform,” she shared.

Her love for Jamaica extends far beyond the camera lens. “I carry my heritage into every room I enter. Whether through my accent, my stories, or my perspective, I want people to know where I’m from and what it represents,” she said, reinforcing her mission to represent her homeland with pride.

THE DECISION TO PURSUE LAW

Zan’s interest in law began during her time as a junior mayor in Montego Bay. “I loved being in rooms where impactful decisions were made. It inspired me to consider law as a career,” she said. Currently a student at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, Zan is on a full-tuition scholarship and has set her sights on breaking barriers within the legal profession.

“Law school is demanding, but I’ve learned to lean on discipline and faith,” she said. “I’ve prayed through many challenging moments. There was one instance where I couldn’t see how I’d manage finals, modeling commitments, and work, but God provided a way.”

For Zan, studying law is about more than academic achievement. “I want to bring my authentic self to the legal field. From my headwraps to my bold style, I aim to challenge the norms and represent diversity at the highest levels.”

BALANCING TWO WORLDS

Managing the dual demands of modeling and law school requires careful planning and determination. “Discipline is key,” she emphasized. “I’ve learned to be intentional with my time and stay focused on my goals. Modeling has taught me the importance of presenting myself confidently, while law school sharpens my analytical skills.”

Zan also spoke about the importance of staying grounded amidst her busy schedule. “My faith keeps me centered. I’ve always asked God for humility and guidance. My family also plays a huge role in keeping me balanced. Their support means everything to me.”

LESSONS FROM MODELING

Traveling the world for runway shows

FIRST, HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF. MODELING ISN’T ABOUT SEEKING VALIDATION; IT’S ABOUT KNOWING YOUR WORTH. SECOND, PREPARE FOR CHALLENGES. REJECTION IS A PART OF THE JOURNEY, USE IT AS A STEPPINGSTONE. LASTLY, DON’T BE AFRAID TO DREAM BIG. THE JOURNEY MIGHT BE HARD, BUT IT’S WORTH IT.

and campaigns, she experienced the highs and challenges of the fashion industry. “Modeling teaches you resilience,” she said. “You face rejection, adapt to different cultures, and learn to thrive under pressure. It’s a career that stretches you in every way.”

Zan’s modeling career has not only opened doors but also imparted invaluable life lessons. “Rejection is a big part of the industry, but it doesn’t define you,” she said. “I’ve learned to see rejection as redirection and an opportunity to grow.”

LOOKING BACK,

I REALIZE THAT GOD WAS PREPARING ME FOR GREATER THINGS. EVERY OPPORTUNITY SEEMED TO ALIGN PERFECTLY, AND I SEE NOW HOW THEY ALL FIT TOGETHER.

Her journey has also strengthened her confidence. “Modeling has taught me to walk into any room with my head held high. Whether it’s a casting call or a courtroom, I’ve learned the power of self-assurance.”

FOR ASPIRING MODELS

Zan’s advice for those considering modeling is both practical and encouraging. "First, have confidence in yourself. Modeling isn’t about seeking validation; it’s about knowing your worth. Second, prepare for challenges. Rejection is a part of the journey, use it as a steppingstone. Lastly, don’t be afraid to dream big. The journey might be hard, but it’s worth it."

She also emphasized the importance of faith and resilience. “There were times when I felt like giving up, but prayer and perseverance kept me going. God’s timing is always perfect.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

As she looks to the future, Zan sees a dynamic career that bridges her passions for fashion and law. “I want to integrate fashion and law in a meaningful way, whether it’s through intellectual property law or advocating for diversity in the industry,” she said. “I also have a deep desire to give back to Jamaica, perhaps through mentorship programs or community initiatives.”

Zan remains focused on excelling in her current endeavors while staying open to new opportunities. “Whether it’s on the runway or in the courtroom, I want to make an impact. My ultimate goal is to inspire others to dream boldly and pursue their passions fearlessly.”

GUARDING YOUR HEART FOR A HEALTHIER YOU

Exercise, eat healthy, and quit smoking are just a few of the great tips your doctor would likely give at the end of a cardiovascular visit. I think “manage your emotions” would be a great addition to that list.

The way we react to life’s experiences signals that our minds and hearts are directly connected, and that we must be able to guard our hearts to prevent our thoughts from sabotaging our health. Guarding our hearts is a biblical truth which we are encouraged to obey. “Above all else, guard your heart because everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23 NKJV)

Guarding our hearts is the purposeful act of shielding our minds and bodies from negative influences, toxic behaviors, and thoughts that are just not life-giving. However, this does not permit us to hide behind walls and become anti-social, cold, and distant, nor should it foster fear of taking risks in building relationships.

When we speak of the heart, we are referring to our emotional center where feelings, thoughts, and reasoning dwell. Our thoughts control our attitudes, attitudes lead to actions, and these actions determine our achievements. Unfortunately, our thoughts are developed from encounters and experiences which are not always positive, and while negative emotions can create enough discomfort to lead us in making some necessary personal adjustments, they can also find ways to dwell in our hearts and affect our lives and livelihood.

The truth is that we may not be able to control our feelings in certain situations, but we can learn to connect the brain with our heart, and in so doing control our reactions. The extent to which we

BEING CENTERED MEANS HAVING A POSITIVE REFERENCE FOR THOSE DAYS WHEN THE EMOTIONS AND STRESS OF LIFE TAKES YOU OFF BALANCE.

can control our emotions will not only guard our heart but also have a positive impact on our health and by extension the way we execute our jobs, attend to our families, and relate to our friends. As we put this into practice, here are a few tips:

1. Examine your circle.

Take time to assess how people around you affect your thoughts, actions, attitude, mood, and the decisions you make. Choose your friends wisely and ensure there is substance in all your relationships.

2. Believe in your independence. Sometimes, the fear of being alone causes us to put the unhealthy choice of accepting things that are self-destructive over the healthier option of self-preservation.

3. Stay alert.

Seemingly innocent comments or jokes drenched in negativity can over time seed doubt, worry, confusion, anger, and eventually a full-grown tree of depression.

4. Find your center. Often, we become fixated on what is happening around us and engage in negative thoughts which become difficult to control. Being centered means having a positive reference for those days when the emotions and stress of life takes you off balance.

5. Seek good advice.

When stuck in an emotional rut, turn to someone you trust and respect. This could be a positive family member or friend, a spiritual leader, or a psychologist, if there is a need for professional help. We are never too experienced to learn.

In continuing the journey of personal development, we must pay attention to our emotional intelligence which includes learning to guard our heart. When we are effective in guarding our hearts, we are better able to manage our emotions, make healthier decisions, and live in peace with ourselves and others.

Amanda Blais

BUILDING BRIDGES OF LOVE

In an era dominated by social media, dating apps, and the unrelenting buzz of digital notifications, navigating relationships has never been more complex—or more rewarding. Amanda Blais, Certified Relationship Coach and CEO of With Love Relationship Coaching, stands as a guide for those seeking meaningful connections amidst the noise of modern life.

With a blend of compassion, evidence-based strategies, and a deep understanding of human dynamics, Amanda has dedicated her career to helping individuals and couples build lasting, fulfilling relationships. “Relationships are at the heart of everything,” says Amanda. “When we nurture them intentionally, they become the foundation for a life filled with love, growth, and joy.”

In this exclusive VBD Magazine interview, Amanda shares her thoughts on the influence of technology, the art of conflict resolution, and the keys to thriving in modern relationships. Her wisdom offers a roadmap for anyone navigating the complexities of love in the digital age.

FROM STRUGGLES TO PURPOSE

Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Amanda’s journey into relationship coaching was shaped by her own life experiences and academic pursuits. She earned a dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Crime and Justice Studies from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Currently, Amanda is pursuing a Master of Social Work with a concentration in trauma at Simmons University. Her professional journey is underpinned by resilience and a commitment to empowering others to build fulfilling relationships.

“I’ve had my share of failed relationships,” she shares candidly. “I found myself jumping into a new relationship before processing the last one, never pausing to reflect on who I was or what I truly wanted.” These patterns led to significant upheavals in Amanda’s life, including frequent moves, financial strain, and the challenge of starting over repeatedly.

But these experiences became the foundation of her mission. “I turned my pain into passion,” Amanda explains. “I wanted to educate others so they wouldn’t make the same mistakes I did, if they could help it. Helping others build fulfilling relationships during difficult times keeps me passionate about my work.”

COACHING WITH COMPASSION

“The mission of With Love Relationship Coaching is to provide coaching and guidance to those who struggle in the different areas that come along with being in romantic relationships,” she explains. Offering virtual coaching to singles, couples, and groups, Amanda tailors her services to meet the unique needs of her clients. “I help clients navigate their current relationship situations and create individualized plans to prioritize what they want to focus on and overcome.”

Amanda’s coaching practice is rooted in her belief that love and understanding can transform lives. “As humans, we make mistakes, and relationships can be messy,” Amanda says. “What’s important is learning from those mistakes and understanding that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. You need to love yourself enough to want better for your future. Change takes effort, but it’s worth it when it leads to healthier, more fulfilling relationships.”

Whether helping a single client work through insecurities, guiding a couple through trust issues, or supporting someone after a breakup or divorce, Amanda’s approach is compassionate and personalized.

SELF-AWARENESS IN RELATIONSHIPS

According to Amanda, self-awareness is the cornerstone of successful relationships. “It allows individuals to understand their emotions, triggers, and communication styles, enabling them to interact with others more effectively. Self-awareness also allows individuals to know what is going on, right or wrong, in their relationships,” she explains. “This awareness leads to healthier interactions and more fulfilling connections.”

To cultivate self-awareness, Amanda encourages her clients to:

● Practice Mindfulness: Engage in daily practices that center attention and reduce emotional reactivity.

● Journal Regularly: Reflect on emotions and experiences to uncover patterns.

● Trust Instincts: Listening to your gut can prevent investing time and energy in relationships that are not right.

RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGES

When asked about the most common challenges couples face today, Amanda points to communication and trust as recurring issues. “Social media has added a layer of complexity to relationships,” she notes. “It can amplify insecurities and make communication more challenging.”

Amanda’s process for helping clients overcome these obstacles is thorough and thoughtful:

● Assess the Situation: “I work with

clients to understand why the challenge exists and what has been done to address it so far.”

● Explore Strategies: “We discuss actions they can take immediately to minimize or eliminate the issue.”

● Focus on Solutions: “My goal is to equip clients with practical tools to foster trust and improve communication.”

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but Amanda emphasizes that it doesn’t have to be destructive. “The key is to handle conflict in a healthy and constructive way that strengthens your bond and deepens your understanding of each other,” she explains.

Amanda’s top tips for resolving conflicts effectively:

● Active Listening: Hear and understand your partner’s perspective without interrupting.

● Empathy: Put yourself in in the other person’s shoes and consider their feelings.

● Calm and Respectful Communication: Avoid shouting or blaming and focus on expressing your needs respectfully.

● Focus on the Issue: Separate the problem from the person.

● Compromise: Seek solutions that address both partners’ needs.

● Take Breaks if Necessary: Allow time to cool down before revisiting the discussion.

● Seek Professional Help: When conflicts persist, a neutral third party can help guide the conversation.

IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON RELATIONSHIPS

Technology has undoubtedly changed the way people interact in relationships, introducing both opportunities and challenges. “Technology is a tool,” Amanda asserts. “It’s up to us to use it in ways that enhance our relationships rather than detracts from them. However, the constant presence of technology can create unrealistic expectations for instant responses, leading to unnecessary conflict,” Amanda observes.

Here are Amanda’s strategies for navigating technology in relationships:

● Set Digital Boundaries: For the use of technology, such as designating tech-free times and spaces, set boundaries. Be intentional about when and how you use technology and prioritize face-to-face interactions.

● Communication Openly: Talk with your partner about how you use technology and the impact it has on your relationship. Establish realistic expectations and boundaries together.

● Focus on Quality Time: Make an effort to spend quality time with your partner without the distractions of technology. Engage in activities that promote connection and intimacy.

● Cultivate Self-Awareness: Be aware of how technology affects your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. If you notice that technology is negatively impacting your relationship, take steps to address it.

● Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling to navigate the impact of

technology on your relationship, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. A therapist can provide guidance and support.

BALANCING PURPOSE

WITH SELF-CARE AND FAITH

“As I try to educate my clients on the importance of self-care, I also have to practice what I preach,” Amanda states. Her self-care rituals include indulging in moments of joy, whether it’s visiting the nail salon, enjoying quiet time at a coffee shop, watching true crime documentaries, or spending time with her parents. Amanda finds additional comfort and happiness in cuddling her dog, Reese, and enjoying quality moments with her partner, Tim, both of whom bring immense joy to her life.

Faith also plays a significant role in Amanda’s journey. She recalls wrestling with the question, What do I want to do with my life? and turning to God for guidance. It was through prayer and reflection that Amanda gained clarity about her purpose: becoming a Certified Relationship Coach to help others navigate the complexities of intimate relationships. “I feel like I always knew what I wanted to do, but I needed that extra nudge from above to put it into action,” she says.

ON THE HORIZON

Amanda provides her clients with a wealth of resources to support their growth outside of sessions. From reading recommendations to actionable exercises, she equips clients with tools to continue their journey toward healthier relationships. Her podcast, With Love: The Relationship Coaching Podcast, offers free, accessible insights on love and connection.

In the future, Amanda hopes to extend her reach by working with high schools, universities, and rehabilitation programs. “Relationships are central to every stage of life,” she says. “I want to empower as many people as possible to navigate them with confidence and care.”

Whether she’s guiding clients through the complexities of digital dating or helping them resolve conflicts with grace, Amanda Blais is a gem in the area of relationship coaching. Her insights are a lifeline for those navigating love in the 21st century—and a reminder that, even in the digital age, human connection remains timeless.

A FAITH-FILLED GUIDE TO LOVE, MARRIAGE, AND PURPOSE

Dr. Velma

Dr. Velma Bagby radiates a rare blend of wisdom, grace, and authority. From the very first moment of her exclusive Zoom interview with VBD Magazine, it was clear that she is a woman on a mission—rooted in faith and driven by purpose. A Dating-Relationship Coach, Award-winning Author, Ordained Minister, Podcast Host, and CEO of Adoni Publishing, Dr. Bagby’s influence extends far beyond her titles.

Our interview was a soul-stirring masterclass with a woman who has dedicated her life to helping others thrive. Dr. Bagby doesn’t just engage in conversation—she elevates it. Her voice, both calm and commanding, carried the wisdom of decades spent empowering individuals and couples, while her radiant smile reflected a life filled with joy, peace, and purpose. She captivated our team with profound insights, inspiring anecdotes, and an unshakable commitment to guiding others toward meaningful relationships and faith-centered living. Her words weren’t just advice—they were an invitation to a higher standard of love, faith, and intentionality.

THE ROOTS OF RESILIENCE

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Bagby’s upbringing instilled in her a remarkable strength. “I grew up in a section of the area that was not for the well-to-do,” she mentioned. “At the age of 12, my parents divorced, leaving my mom to raise seven children. In my mind, she was such a strong woman, because I watched her navigate incredible challenges.”

Her mother’s resilience became a powerful example. “She didn’t settle for what life handed her. She approached the owner of a local grocery store and asked to be trained as a checker, offering to work for free. They not only trained her but paid her during her training. From there, she went on to work for a major grocery chain and retired after 25 years.”

Dr. Bagby’s voice was filled with admiration as she continued, “My mother became a first-time homeowner in the

1960s—an incredible feat for an African American woman at that time. Her resilience and faith taught me to press forward no matter what.”

CARVING A PATH OF HER OWN

Inspired by her mother’s strength, Dr. Bagby was determined to succeed. “I had one goal: to get off my mom’s payroll. I wanted to ease her burden,” she explained. “I secured a job with the state government at 18, initially as a secretary. I learned shorthand in high school—something that’s stayed with me even now.”

Her career spanned 38 years, culminating in a leadership role overseeing 100 people and multiple offices. “I always believed in preparing others for leadership,” she said. “I read a book once that said the worst thing you can do at your retirement party is realize you forgot to prepare someone to take your place. I wanted to leave knowing I’d made a difference.”

Even in retirement, her skills as a coach, leader, and mentor remained essential. “I thought I was going to box up my leadership skills and retire quietly,” she admitted. “But God said no.”

A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES

Dr. Bagby’s 50-year marriage to her husband, Pastor Dr. Bruce Bagby, began with a fateful encounter in 10th-grade English class. “I wasn’t looking for a husband,” she laughed. “My Bible study teacher asked us to create a ‘husband-to-be prayer list,’ and I made one. But I wasn’t focused on finding anyone at 16.”

Her future husband, however, had other plans. “A friend suggested I talk to him, but I told her, ‘If he’s interested, he’ll approach me.’ He eventually did, though he was a little shy. We started dating, but he had to move back to Los Angeles, so we broke up.”

Their story could have ended there, but fate intervened cancelling his move. “At the end of our senior year, he signed my yearbook, writing, ‘To the woman who will be my wife one day.’ I thought he was crazy,” she said, smiling. A year later, they reconnected, began dating again, and were married within a year. “He wanted to ensure he was ready for marriage—stable and responsible. I admired that about him.”

Dr. Velma Bagby shared that her book, My 70s Love Story, details how she and her husband first met. Reflecting on their journey, Dr. Bagby highlighted the recurring phrase when love finds you, emphasizing that their union was divinely orchestrated. She pointed to Proverbs 18:22a (TPT), which states, “...when a man finds a wife...,” as a scriptural affirmation of the connection that God designed for them.

A MINISTRY BUILT ON EXPERIENCE

Dr. Bagby’s marriage became the cornerstone of her ministry. “Around our 40th

BEFORE YOU SPEAK TO YOUR SPOUSE ABOUT AN ISSUE, TAKE IT TO GOD FIRST. SOMETIMES, GOD RESOLVES IT WITHOUT YOU NEEDING TO SAY A WORD.

wedding anniversary, God impressed on my heart that people would want to know how we did it,” she said. “That realization led me to focus on relationships and dating.”

Her coaching is informed by years of personal experience and deep faith. “One of the most important lessons I teach is grace,” she said. “Sometimes, we’re too hard on each other. We all have moments when we’re not at our best. Grace allows room for love to grow.”

She also emphasized the power of prayer. “Before you speak to your spouse about an issue, take it to God first. Sometimes, God resolves it without you needing to say a word.”

REDEFINING DATING

Dr. Bagby’s coaching extends to singles navigating the modern dating landscape. “The problem today is that many people use high school dating methods as adults,” she said. “They’re focused on superficial things instead of seeking the qualities important in a life partner.”

Her book, Your Adam Is Asleep Until God Opens His Eyes, addresses this issue. “It was inspired by my daughters, who asked why men seem so slow to commit. I explained that until God opens a man’s eyes to the one He has for him, he won’t recognize her.”

Dr. Bagby encourages singles to embrace patience and preparation. “God knows who He has for you, but are you preparing yourself to be the right person for them? This waiting period is crucial.”

STORYTELLING WITH PURPOSE

Modern dating can feel like navigating uncharted waters, but Dr. Velma Bagby’s The Catch Series offers hope and clarity.

Blending Christian Contemporary Fiction with insights from over four decades of marriage and singles counseling, Dr. Bagby crafts stories that resonate with readers from all walks of life.

Her unique storytelling approach offers actionable advice regarding healthy, meaningful relationships, making her work a valuable guide for those seeking love and fulfillment in today’s complex dating landscape. “Jesus used parables to teach, and I aim to do the same,” Dr. Bagby said. “I want readers to see themselves in my stories and come away with practical insights.”

The inspiration behind The Catch Series is just as compelling as the stories themselves. Dr. Bagby’s idea took shape during lively discussions with her brother, an avid fisherman, as they explored the similarities between various fish species and the personalities encountered in the dating world. This creative parallel not only enhances her storytelling but also provides readers with an engaging and relatable lens through which to understand relationship dynamics.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Readers often tell me, ‘I wish I had this book when I was dating.’ Hearing that confirms I’m on the right path.”

EMPOWERING CONVERSATIONS

Dr. Velma Bagby’s passion for guiding others toward stronger, God-centered relationships extends beyond her books and coaching—she’s also the voice behind two insightful podcasts: Finding Your Voice and Dr. Velma Talks. Each platform serves a unique purpose, empowering listeners with wisdom, faith-based principles, and real-world relationship guidance.

Finding Your Voice was born from Dr. Bagby’s personal journey of self-discovery after years in the corporate world, where she wrote and spoke on behalf of an organization rather than expressing her own thoughts. Upon retirement, she realized the importance of reclaiming her voice and using it to inspire others. This podcast provides a space for authors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders to

share their stories of finding purpose, overcoming obstacles, and making an impact. With each episode, listeners gain motivation and insight into how they, too, can step into their calling and use their voices with confidence.

On the other hand, Dr. Velma Talks is a deep dive into the world of dating and relationships, offering candid discussions on love, faith, and personal growth. Dr. Bagby brings real-life scenarios to the

forefront, using true stories and current events to illustrate key relationship lessons. Whether analyzing a social trend, answering a listener’s question, or sharing a personal experience, her approach is direct, practical, and rooted in biblical principles.

For those seeking wisdom on faith, relationships, and purpose, both Finding Your Voice and Dr. Velma Talks serve as valuable resources. Listeners can subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and YouTube. Visit www. drvelmabagby.com for more details, show notes, and additional resources. Be part of the conversation by subscribing to Dr. Velma’s YouTube Channel, and let’s build stronger, God-centered dating habits and marriages together. SOMETIMES, WE’RE TOO HARD ON EACH OTHER. WE ALL HAVE MOMENTS WHEN WE’RE NOT AT OUR BEST. GRACE ALLOWS ROOM FOR LOVE TO GROW.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Balancing her various roles requires discipline.

“My family is my priority,” Dr. Bagby emphasized. “I dedicate Mondays and Tuesdays to interviews and writing. The rest of the week is for my husband and household. It’s important to maintain that balance.”

Despite her busy schedule, Dr. Bagby finds time to mentor others. “I always turn back to help the next person,” she said. “Whether it’s offering

advice or pointing someone in the right direction, I see it as my responsibility.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Bagby is excited about the projects on her horizon. “I’m celebrating my 51st wedding anniversary, finishing my podcast season, and releasing three new e-books in March. I’m also working on closing out the Catch Series with a 5th book and workbook that compiles lessons from all the stories; participating in an anthology Women of the Waiting Room and more. I’m always thinking about what’s next. God has a plan for me, and I’m excited to see where it leads.”

Her closing words resonated deeply: “Everything I’ve done, every opportunity I’ve had, has been a part of God’s plan. And I’m just grateful to be part of His story.”

Ramona Powell Dennis

INSPIRING HEARTS THROUGH FAITH AND WORDS

Words have the power to heal, inspire, and transform lives, and few understand this better than Ramona Powell Dennis. As an author, teacher, and speaker, she has dedicated her life to lifting others through storytelling and spiritual wisdom. With an authentic voice and an unshakable faith, she encourages individuals to embrace their journeys, find purpose in life’s twists and turns, and trust that every experience—whether joyful or challenging—carries a lesson worth sharing.

A multi-genre writer and sought-after speaker, Dennis has followed a path filled with surprising turns, each leading her closer to her divine calling. In an interview with VBD Magazine, she opens up about her journey, sharing how faith shaped her writing, the lessons she has learned along the way, and the wisdom she hopes to impart to readers and aspiring writers. Her story is a powerful reminder that when you walk in your calling, the destination is always greater than imagined.

CHILDHOOD OF ADVENTURES

Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, Ramona developed a natural curiosity, a bold spirit, and a deep-rooted faith that would shape her journey in unexpected ways. She was the youngest of ten children—a fact she proudly acknowledges with humor. “Yes, I’m spoiled, but I’m not a brat; there is a difference.”

As the youngest, she often found herself at the mercy of her older brother, who was just two years ahead of her. “He got me into a lot of trouble by daring me to do the things he was too afraid to do. But because of my naivety, I did them. And then, of course, he had to do them too, because he didn’t want to be outdone by a girl,” she recalled.

Through these playful sibling challenges, Ramona developed a bold spirit—one that would serve her well in adulthood as she navigated career shifts, caregiving responsibilities, and stepping into the unknown as an author.

FINDING HER CALLING

Ramona’s early career path looked very different from where she is today. She graduated from Florida A&M University in 1986 with a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems and began working in information technology (IT) for Florida Power Corp. She spent 15 years in IT before relocating back to Tallahassee and transitioning into Human Resources (HR), where she found a passion for working with people.

Her move back to Tallahassee marked a turning point, as she became a caregiver for both of her parents, who suffered from Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Balancing work and caregiving, she found herself drawn back to the ministry. Her deep-rooted faith and love for God’s Word naturally led her to teaching, speaking, and ultimately writing.

A LIFE OF TEACHING AND SPEAKING

Ramona’s path as a teacher and speaker started in her teenage years when she began teaching Sunday School. This continued into adulthood, where she moved from teaching youth classes to

leading adult Bible studies. Her ability to engage and inspire people with the Word of God led to frequent invitations to speak at women’s and youth ministries.

“My love for God and His Word made me a natural when it came to being a guest speaker for the women’s and youth ministries,” she said. This passion for teaching and speaking ultimately influenced her journey as a writer, where she sought to encourage, educate, and uplift others through her words.

WRITING AS A MINISTRY

For years, Ramona filled journals with poetry, personal reflections, and short stories, but she had never considered publishing them. The turning point came at an HR event, where someone asked her if she had ever thought about writing books. The conversation sparked something in her. “I was reminded that I had all this poetry I had never done anything with,” she shared. It wasn’t long before she rediscovered those journals while downsizing, and a friend’s encouragement convinced her to publish her work.

Interestingly, Ramona’s first published book was not the poetry collection she had envisioned. “I thought my first book was going to be poetry, but God had a different plan,” she said. “I tried to do the poetry book first, but God said no and blocked everything I tried until I did what He told me to do first.”

That first book became “In the Morning When I Rise: 31 Days of Inspirational Reading”, a devotional that she initially doubted anyone would read. “I prayed and asked God to give me peace about my work and let the words fall on the ears of those who needed it.”

After its release, the doors finally opened for her poetry books. She has since published a six-book poetry series called Love and Such series, a memoir Love Trust Live, a novella Naomi’s Secret, and a life organization book Adjusting to Life After I Do. She has also contributed to anthologies, including Breaking the Silence and Hold on: Help is on the Way.

Ramona’s books carry messages of faith, healing, and perseverance—themes that reflect her own life experiences. Her upcoming release, Whispers of Faith: In Hopeless Times, Trust God! , was born out of conversations with people who were struggling through grief and hardship.

“My desire is for the book to give hope and to let people know that no matter how bad it may seem, God has not for-

gotten them,” she stated. “They should pray, ask God for clarity, and trust Him to deliver in His time, not theirs.”

THE POWER OF PRAYER

For Ramona, prayer is more than a habit—it’s a lifestyle. “I believe that we all must have a close relationship with God. Prayer is how we communicate with Him. Praying is second nature to me,” she shared. “I talk to God all day long. Sometimes I think He gets tired of me aggravating Him, but He doesn’t. He wants us to talk with Him.”

Her faith influences everything she does, from writing to speaking to daily decision-making. “My prayer life used to only be one of asking for what I wanted, but now my prayer life is true communication. He speaks, and I listen. I speak, and He listens.

“Know that it’s never too late to have a relationship with God through salvation,” said Ramona before quoting John 3:16, ‘For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.’

“To be saved, acknowledge that you are a sinner and need a savior, believe that Jesus died and rose again to pay for your sins, and confess by declaring Jesus is your Lord and Savior. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you can be forgiven and have eternal life. You can build that relationship with Him. Make Him your best friend. He will keep your secrets, He will forgive your sins, and He will keep you in perfect peace, if you keep you mind on Him.”

OVERCOMING DOUBT

Ramona admits that self-doubt has been one of her greatest challenges. “My biggest challenge has been getting out of my own way. Self-doubt will keep you stagnant.”

She constantly asks God for confirmation that she’s on the right path. “I always ask God to let me know that I’ve helped somebody. That’s enough to keep me going.”

Her message to aspiring authors: “If you have something to say, say it. Put in the work and share your story. If it only touches one life, it’s worth the effort.”

BEYOND WRITING

Ramona’s creativity extends beyond writing. She loves to crochet, knit, sew, decorate, cook, bake, and can food. “My mom was a gardener, a cook, and a baker. I inherited the cooking and the baking. I’m not a fan of gardening because I’m afraid of critters of all kinds.”

She finds joy in creating personalized gifts—wedding dresses, homemade jams, and artwork—sharing these gifts as a way of honoring her mother’s legacy of giving.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Ramona has exciting books in the works, including The Power of a Man’s Love, which is a poetry companion to The Power of a Woman’s Love and Naomi’s Pain, the second book in her Naomi series.

Her passion for writing continues to grow, and she remains committed to following God’s direction in every endeavor.

As she reflects on her journey, she holds firm to one truth: “No matter what, God knows what is best. I may not understand it at the time, but when I look back, it all makes sense.”

YOUR FUTURE STARTS NOW

Everyone wants to feel significant. We look for significance in our achievements, our relationships, our appearance, our socioeconomic status. But our true significance is found in none of those things.

Using her experience with an abusive relationship as a backdrop, Autumn Miles acknowledges the struggles that so many women face as they pursue significance--struggles that can lead to eating disorders, self-harm, depression, and other types of oppression. Through her own story and her experience mentoring other women, Autumn shows readers that their significance is found only in Christ, and that no matter what lurks in a young woman’s past or how she feels about herself, significance is obtainable--now.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ndeana Simone Stewart is a visionary leader driven by faith, passion, and a commitment to making a difference. As an author, mentor, dancer, coach, and the CEO and Founder of Tiny’s Blessing, she has devoted her life to empowering others. Whether she’s guiding students toward their dreams, bringing comfort to nursing home residents, or inspiring women through her writing, her impact is undeniable.

From a young age, she felt a calling to help others—a passion that has only deepened with time. Through Tiny’s Blessing, she has mobilized communities, proving that even the smallest acts of kindness can create lasting change. Her dedication to mentorship has helped individuals overcome challenges and unlock their full potential, making her a source of encouragement and strength.

In this exclusive VBD Magazine feature, Andeana shares her victories, struggles, and the faith that keeps her going. With a servant’s heart and a relentless drive to turn purpose into action, she is proof that a life dedicated to uplifting others is a life well spent.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATIONAL PURSUITS

Hailing from Montgomery, Alabama, Andeana reflects on her formative years with gratitude. “I graduated from Success Unlimited Academy and I’m currently enrolled at Alabama State University,” she shares. Pursuing a major in early childhood education, she is on the verge of earning her bachelor’s degree. “My journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to mentoring others and making a positive impact in my community.”

THE BIRTH OF TINY’S BLESSING

Andeana’s inspiration to establish Tiny’s Blessing was deeply personal. “I was inspired to create this organization by my personal experiences with my grandfather while he was in a nursing home,” she explains. Witnessing the need for support and joy in such environments, she took action and established Tiny’s Blessing.

“The mission of Tiny’s Blessing is to bring comfort, happiness, and essential resources to residents of nursing homes and children’s homes, ensuring they feel valued and cared for.” Through various programs and initiatives, the organization strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of those it serves.

A SEASON OF GIVING

One of the standout projects of Tiny’s Blessing occurred during a recent holiday season. “We collected enough items to fill 500 blessing bags for residents in the nursing homes,” Andeana recalls. With the collaboration of professors and students from Alabama State University, as well as contributions from the community, they gathered snacks, blankets, clothes, and other essentials.

“It was such a rewarding experience to see how everyone came together to bring joy to those who often feel lonely.” The initiative was even featured in the Montgomery Independent newspaper. “It’s amazing to see how our efforts are being recognized.”

LITERARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Beyond her organizational work, Andeana ventured into authorship with Purple Wisdom. “The inspiration behind Purple Wisdom comes from my desire to create a meaningful and supportive resource for women,” she states. This journal was crafted with love and purpose to inspire and uplift every woman who uses it. It’s designed to be a companion on a journey of growth, reflection, and empowerment.”

Through this work, she emphasizes the importance of self-love, resilience, and personal reflection. “By encouraging women to document their thoughts, dreams, and progress, I hope to help them recognize their inner strength and potential.”

EMPOWERING OTHERS

Faith plays a significant role in Andeana’s journey. “As a Christian, faith provides me with strength, guidance, and hope during challenging times,” she shares. It influences her approach to work, emphasizing compassion, empathy, and understanding.

“My faith serves as a foundation that keeps me grounded and inspires me to strive for excellence in all my endeavors.”

In her coaching role, Andeana employs various strategies to uplift and empower individuals. “I focus on setting clear, achievable goals and celebrating progress along the way,” she explains. She encourages a growth mindset, helping individuals see challenges as opportunities for learning. “By fostering a sense of unity and care, I aim to motivate and uplift those I work with.”

Mentorship holds a special place in Andeana’s heart. She recalls a particularly rewarding experience: “I helped a student who was struggling with her classes. She was really having a tough time, but with daily support, she managed to make the A-B honor roll!” Balancing her own academic responsibilities while providing guidance made the achievement even more fulfilling. “Those moments remind me why I love mentoring so much.”

For those looking to start purpose-driven organizations, Andeana advises, “Stay true to your vision and values, and always prioritize making a positive impact.” She highlights the importance of building strong partnerships. “Keep that commitment to mentoring at the core of your mission. That way, you can really make a difference in the community.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Building Tiny’s Blessing was not without its hurdles. “Coordinating the collection of items and getting the community involved took a lot of planning and outreach,” Andeana admits. She overcame these challenges by collaborating with local organizations and Alabama State University. “Their collaboration made a huge difference, and together, we were able to gather enough items for 500 blessing bags. It was a learning experience that taught me the power of teamwork and community support.”

STAYING MOTIVATED

When faced with obstacles, Andeana’s motivation stems from her commitment to mentoring. “Seeing the positive impact on individuals and communities keeps me going, even when things get tough.”

Balancing multiple roles requires effective time management. “I find that setting clear priorities and schedules helps me manage my time effectively,” she notes. Allocating specific time blocks for each role and staying organized with to-do lists and calendars are key strategies. “It’s all about staying focused on my goals and remembering why I started each endeavor in the first place.”

LOOKING AHEAD

“I envision Tiny’s Blessing expanding nationwide to make a positive impact on countless lives. My hope is to reach more communities and provide support to those in need, fostering a sense of unity and care. I believe that by working together, we can create a brighter future for everyone,” she expresses.

As for her personal journey, Andeana remains open to divine guidance. “I just want to continue to let God guide and lead me. I know whatever God has for me will be amazing. My faith in God is strong, and I have faith that what’s next for me will be great, with God with me each day.”

Dr. Tavis Taylor

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO PURPOSE, PROFITABILITY, AND IMPACT

With a sharp business mind, a heart rooted in faith, and a voice that speaks life into others, Dr. Tavis—known as The Ultimate Purpose Pusher—has spent years guiding people to clarity, confidence, and breakthrough. As a business strategist coach, resilience mindset coach, and accomplished author, she challenges individuals to move beyond fear, past setbacks, and into the limitless possibilities that come with alignment and intentional action.

But Dr. Tavis’ journey didn’t come without struggles. She knows what it means to battle uncertainty, to push through adversity, and to rise above circumstances that threaten to hold you back. Her message is a lived experience. And that’s why she tells everyone she coaches: “Trust the process, take action, and never stop believing in the greatness within you.”

In this exclusive two-part feature, VBD Magazine examines the impact and influence of Dr. Tavis. This issue explores her insights on business, resilience, and purpose-driven success. But her journey runs even deeper. In the March issue, she opens up about the raw and unfiltered details of her path—her struggles, defining moments, and the faith-fueled transformation that shaped her into The Ultimate Purpose Pusher.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, an aspiring leader, or someone searching for clarity, Dr. Tavis’ insights will challenge you to dream bigger, push harder, and walk boldly in your purpose.

A FOUNDATION BUILT ON FAITH AND EDUCATION

Growing up in a close-knit community that prioritized faith and perseverance, Dr. Tavis developed a deep sense of responsibility to help others. “I was inspired by the strength of the people around me, and it instilled in me a deep desire to make an impact,” she shared.

Her commitment to growth led her to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Public Administration from Georgia State University in Atlanta,

Georgia. She continued to expand her expertise by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Positive Neuropsychology from The Graduate University of America—The New School of Positive Psychology in California.

“Education has been instrumental in shaping the work I do today,” she said. “It gave me the tools to not only improve my own life but to create strategies that empower others to step into their purpose.”

That passion for knowledge and service became the driving force behind her coaching programs, books, and speaking engagements, all aimed at guiding individuals to align their faith, purpose, and success.

LIVING THE MISSION

A catalyst for transformation, Dr. Tavis

considers herself The Ultimate Purpose Pusher, since she helps individuals discover and embrace their God-given purpose. “To me, it’s not just a title—it’s a mission,” she explained. “I developed this passion after walking through seasons of uncertainty myself, where I realized that purpose is the foundation of fulfillment.”

Seeing people move from confusion to clarity, from fear to boldness, fuels her work. “Transformation happens when people step fully into their calling, and I love being part of that process,” she said.

FORMULATING BUSINESS STRATEGIES

As a Business Strategist Coach, Dr. Tavis equips entrepreneurs with the tools to build sustainable and impactful businesses. She emphasizes three core strategies:

1. Clarity of Vision – “Know your ‘why’ and ensure it aligns with the needs of your target audience.”

2. Systems and Scalability – “Build systems early on that allow your business to grow without overwhelming you.”

3. Consistency in Branding and Messaging – “Create a cohesive message that resonates with your audience and builds trust.”

“Sustainability begins with intentional planning and a willingness to adapt,” she noted, reinforcing that purpose-driven businesses must be structured for longterm success.

One of the most common challenges among professionals and entrepreneurs is balancing purpose and profitability. Dr. Tavis believes they are not mutually exclusive. “Profitability allows you to amplify your purpose and serve others on a greater scale,” she explained.

By focusing on impact-driven strategies and creating value-based solutions, she helps her clients build businesses that are both meaningful and financially sustainable. “When you lead with service and integrity, success follows,” she added.

DEVELOPING RESILIENCE

Beyond business strategies, Dr. Tavis is passionate about resilience—the ability to rise above challenges and keep moving forward. “Resilience starts with perspective,” she said. “I help my clients reframe challenges as opportunities for growth.”

Her coaching process involves positive neuropsychology mindset exercises, faith-based principles, and actionable goal-setting to help individuals build inner strength. “Setbacks are temporary,” she reminded me. “They are stepping stones to something greater.”

A key part of resilience, she stressed, is recognizing small victories. “By focusing on your strengths and celebrating progress, no matter how small, builds confidence and momentum,” she added.

When asked what advice she would give to someone struggling to move forward,

Dr. Tavis offered a simple but powerful answer: “Start with self-forgiveness, focus on your strengths and start by taking one small step.”

“Transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but it begins with a single decision to act,” she said. “Focus on progress, not perfection, and remind yourself that every step forward brings you closer to where you want to be.”

A SUCCESS-ORIENTED MINDSET

Dr. Tavis emphasizes that personal and professional success begins with having a growth mindset. Her top three tips for developing a resilient and success-driven mindset are:

1. Practice Gratitude Daily – “Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s possible.”

2. Adopt a Growth Mindset – “View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.”

3. Surround Yourself with Positivity –“The people and environments you expose yourself to directly impact your mindset and energy.”

She encourages her clients to be intentional about their thoughts, habits, and associations. “You cannot thrive in a negative environment,” she advised.

WRITING TO EMPOWER

Dr. Tavis uses her books to encourage others on their path to purpose. “Writing started as a way for me to process my own experiences and share lessons I’ve learned,” she said.

Her book, The Scenic Route to Purpose: A Story of Tests, Trials, and Triumphs, is one that deeply resonates with her readers. “It is a testament to the love of God,” she shared. “I have had true adversities in my life, and the feedback from readers about how it has changed their lives has been incredibly humbling.”

Her commitment to writing aligns with her larger mission—offering guidance, wisdom, and hope to those searching for direction. In fact, commitment is driven by her story and the fact that she had to

pull herself out of a very dark season in her own life.

FAITH AS THE FOUNDATION

For Dr. Tavis, faith is central to everything she does. “Faith is the foundation of my work. It guides my decisions, fuels my passion, and reminds me that my work is part of a larger purpose,” she said.

She encourages her clients to trust the process and lean into divine guidance. “Your work is not just a job—it’s a calling,” she affirmed. She attributes her client’s results to the connection and revelation that she receives from God. She fast and prays for all of her clients. She mixes that with her skills in positive neuropsychology, which is the formula for continued success.

INVESTING IN SELF-CARE AND GROWTH

To maintain her own well-being, Dr. Tavis follows a consistent self-care routine that includes prayer, journaling, exercise, and intentional rest. “Growth is intentional,” she said. “I make it a point to invest in personal development and seek opportunities to evolve.”

She also surrounds herself with mentors and peers who inspire her. “Having the right support system is crucial for stay-

ing motivated and continuing to grow,” she noted.

WHAT’S NEXT?

“I want future generations to know that they are capable of achieving greatness and that their purpose holds the power to change the world,” Dr. Tavis said. “My goal is to leave something lasting, something that will continue to bless others for years to come.”

As she moves forward, Dr. Tavis is focused on expanding her coaching programs, launching a new book, and hosting transformational events. “I want to bring people together to grow and thrive,” she stated.

Further, Dr. Tavis is developing digital resources and launching the “Digital Coaching Society” to reach a global audience. “Knowledge and Accessibility is key—I want my work to help as many people as possible and help them navigate the digital space for financial gain,” she added.

Additionally, she is expanding her corporate speaking portfolio with topics such as Managing Stress and Building Emotional Resilience in Uncertain Times. “Helping others navigate life’s challenges is a passion I will always pursue,” she affirmed. In addition, her coaching school “Digital Coaching Society” launches this year as well.

Walking In God’s Plan

THE LIFE-CHANGING MISSION OF RICK AND MARIA JOHNSON

Life has a way of shaping us through challenges, molding our hearts for something greater than we ever imagined.

For Pastor Rick Johnson and his wife, Maria, every hardship, every setback, and every unexpected turn led them to a purpose far beyond their own plans. Their journey is one of transformation—of overcoming personal battles, discovering faith in the darkest moments, and stepping into a life of serving others with open hands and hearts.

In a deeply moving interview with VBD Magazine, the Johnsons shared the raw and unfiltered realities of their past—from Pastor Rick’s struggles with addiction and homelessness to Maria’s journey of survival and faith as an immigrant navigating an unfamiliar country. Yet, through every trial, God was at work, molding them individually before bringing them together for a shared purpose: to serve, uplift, and spread His love to those who need it most.

Today, they stand side by side in ministry to reach the lost, feed the hungry, and mentor the brokenhearted. Whether through local outreach programs, missions abroad, or simply being a source of encourage-

ment to those in need, Pastor Rick and Maria exemplify what it means to live a life fully surrendered to God. Their story is a reminder that no past is too broken for God’s grace, no pain is wasted, and no calling is ever out of reach for those who trust in Him.

PASTOR RICK: SHAPED BY ADVERSITY AND FAITH

Pastor Rick Johnson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, a city known for its cultural diversity, art, and music. However, his formative years were also spent in the Northwoods of Upper Peninsula, Michigan, where his grandparents lived. This unique blend of urban and rural experiences shaped him in unexpected ways.

“Chicago is a mix of cultures, art, and music—all the things I really grew to love. But I also grew up in the woods, which was really cool,” Pastor Rick shares.

At 17, he joined the Marine Corps and served as a special weapons guard for nuclear weapons. But transitioning back to civilian life wasn’t easy. “I got out of the Marine Corps thinking I could get a job from that, but nothing really relates in society to a nuclear weapons guard,” he explains.

After his service, Pastor Rick moved to Florida, where his brother owned a tattoo shop. He soon joined the business, opening tattoo studios across Central Florida. However, beneath the success, he battled alcoholism, a struggle that nearly consumed him—until a court order changed everything.

“God blessed me in a way that the court ordered me to go to church meetings,” he recalls. “That’s where I met my first mentor. He took me under his wing and said, ‘Rick, God’s got a plan for your life.’ That was in 2004, and I’ve been in full-time ministry ever since.”

Now an outreach pastor at Church in The Son, Pastor Rick leads numerous community initiatives, from mobile food drives to planning Super Bowl parties for the homeless. His heart for the lost comes from personal experience—he was once homeless himself.

“I was a homeless veteran in Chicago. I got out of the Marines and had nowhere to go. I understand their plight because I’ve lived it,” he says. “Even as a kid, I got in trouble for dumpster diving, pulling out food for people who needed it. I guess that’s just how God wired me.”

MARIA: A JOURNEY OF COURAGE AND STRENGTH

Born in the mountains of Ecuador, Maria’s story is one of perseverance. Coming from a poor family with four sisters, she immigrated to America at 18, facing enormous challenges.

“It was very hard because I didn’t know English. I’m still learning,” she says. Her struggles intensified when she became a victim of labor abuse. “One of my employers paid me $200 a month while I worked seven days a week. I escaped after four months.”

Despite the difficulties, Maria’s faith sustained her. She eventually found a Spanish-speaking family who helped her secure legal residency in the U.S. Over time, she built a career as a professional nanny, caring for children of high-profile families and traveling the world.

“I’ve been to the Bahamas, Paris, Barcelona, Colorado, North Carolina, Albania, and Greece,” she says. “That was one of my prayers to God—to see the world. And He answered.”

A DIVINE LOVE STORY

Pastor Rick and Maria attended the same church for four years without ever meeting. Looking back, they believe God was preparing them for each other.

“We have a big church, but somehow, God kept us separate until the right time,” Pastor Rick explains.

Their paths finally crossed when Maria joined the ushering team. The moment Pastor Rick saw her, something clicked.

“I walked up to her and, without even knowing how, I said, ‘My Maria, how you doing?’ with an Italian accent,” he laughs. “All the ushers looked at us, and we just smiled.”

From that moment, a beautiful friendship blossomed. They spent months texting Bible verses and talking on the phone while Pastor Rick was on an outreach mission.

Maria remembers their first date vividly. “The Holy Spirit told me to be quiet and let him lead. I wanted to tell him ‘no sex before marriage,’ but God said, ‘Be quiet. It’s your time to receive love.’”

To their friends’ amazement, Pastor Rick and Maria remained pure throughout their courtship. “We didn’t kiss until the pastor said, ‘You may kiss the bride,’” Pastor Rick shares.

Their relationship was built on honor, prayer, and faith. “If you don’t honor each other before marriage, you won’t do it afterward,” Pastor Rick advises young couples.

BUILDING A MARRIAGE ON FAITH AND SERVICE

Since marrying in 2016, the Johnsons have built a life centered on ministry and family. Together, they raise their grand-

children, lead outreach programs, and mentor couples preparing for marriage. For Maria, balance is key. “I tell him, ‘Don’t focus all your time on ministry— family comes first.’”

Pastor Rick agrees. “Our marriage is our first ministry. I can’t be a pastor if my wife is angry at me for neglecting our family.”

Communication and prayer are the foundations of their conflict resolution. “If there’s an issue, we talk about it and we pray,” Maria says.

Pastor Rick adds, “We lift our marriage up to God in prayer. If we’re not happy at home, we’re not happy anywhere.”

A MINISTRY OF COMPASSION AND ACTION

Pastor Rick’s outreach efforts at Church in The Son have touched many lives. Through partnerships with businesses and other organizations, he helps provide food, resources, and mentorship to those in need.

“Our church does mobile food distributions, hurricane relief, and outreach to homeless shelters,” he explains. “We’re even launching a new initiative to work with the Juvenile Assessment Center to reach kids before they end up in the system.”

When asked why so many people in Florida are homeless, Pastor Rick doesn’t hesitate. “Lack of affordable housing. The numbers are crazy. Even some people working fulltime can’t afford a place to live.”

Maria supports his ministry by leading a team of prayer warriors. “We pray for the outreach team and the people they serve,” she says.

Despite their busy schedules, they make time for date nights. “We go on walks,

I CAN’T BE A PASTOR IF MY WIFE IS ANGRY AT ME FOR NEGLECTING OUR FAMILY. WE LIFT OUR MARRIAGE UP TO GOD IN PRAYER. IF WE’RE NOT HAPPY AT HOME, WE’RE NOT HAPPY ANYWHERE.

have dinner, attend events, and go out with other couples,” Maria shares. “You have to invest in your marriage.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE JOHNSONS?

At nearly 60 years old, Pastor Rick and Maria are considering the next phase of their journey. “We’re looking at how long we’ll be in ministry and nannying. Maybe five to seven more years,” Pastor Rick says. But for now, they remain dedicated to their calling. “We haven’t been on a cruise yet,” Pastor Rick jokes. “That’s next!”

As they continue to serve, love, and uplift those around them, their story stands as a testament to the power of faith, redemption, and God’s perfect timing. “We’ve been through a lot,” Maria reflects. “But God has been faithful.”

Though their stories began worlds apart, God was working behind the scenes, preparing them for a partnership that would change lives. The Johnsons stand as living proof that God can turn pain into purpose, trials into triumphs, and brokenness into a testimony of His redeeming love.
