POSITIVE END-NOTE TO 2020 The toughest year that many of us can remember comes to an end with some encouraging news amidst the continuing concern over Covid-19.

The fact that the General Optical Council’s (GOC) own commissioned report recommends that the dispensing optician qualification should be at Level 6 (see news page 6) should finally put to bed an argument that we have been having with the regulator since 2011, when it arbitrarily –and without consultation – declared that the profession was at Level 5. This has always been wrong and, hopefully, we can now move on without the threat of a proliferation of lower level courses at the end of the GOC’s Education Strategic Review. As I write my last column of 2020, there is encouraging news about a number of effective vaccines, which will be available during the coming year. This ought to mean that we will be able to slowly return to near normal in the delivery of services that require face-to-face contact – whether it be examinations, certain CET events or involvement in sector wide events. In the meantime, we will do our level best to support all members to the best of our ability. I am sure that everyone will welcome the board’s decision not to raise membership fees this year. The whole ABDO team is committed to providing the best possible service to you despite the difficult financial situation we face. The board has also decided that Dispensing Optics will continue to be published digitally and via Issuu for the first half of 2021. We have every intention of returning to print as soon as ABDO’s financial situation allows. On behalf of the president, board and all of the ABDO team, I hope you have as good a Christmas break as possible and that we all have a better New Year.

Sir Anthony Garrett

ABDO general secretary
