The Espaisillum showroom is distinctly calmer than its bustling Porta Sant Antoni location. Sophisticated, architectural lighting demonstrates the power of illumination to produce a relaxing atmosphere. “We want to create spaces which really contribute something, which nourish you and wake something up in you,” says director Tomeu Frontera. As far as he’s concerned, lighting is not something to be added once a home has been built, but an important point of consideration as plans are still being drawn up.

Tomeu has accumulated vast amounts of experience in the lighting industry, beginning as a young lad working in the family electrical installation business. “Since I’m a rebellious person, I left the family nucleus and went off to work by myself,” he says, with a smile. He worked his way up, eventually overseeing the creation of a lighting department in a large company. The crisis of 2008 and the impending sale of the business, however, prompted him to make a life-changing decision. By this point, he had discovered that he was far more interested in illumination than installation. With two lighting providers willing to trust him, he set up his own business. “We started with two desks, two chairs, two computers and two brands,” he says. The building we are in belonged to his grandfather and was once a leather warehouse. Tomeu feels a real fondness for the location and has transformed the service lift into an attractive, and of course beautifully-lit, feature.

Espaisillum has grown considerably since it was founded 8 years ago. Today it works with top of the range brands such as Kreon, Modular and the exterior lighting company, Simes. These are brands that are continually innovating. As for decorative designers, Tomeu is most impressed by the captivating creations of Davide Groppi and the playful vintage style of Louis Poulsen. “Every build requires different materials and illumination,” says Tomeu. “No two houses are ever the same even though they might look like it.”

A common fear is that there won’t be enough light in a home. “The funny thing is that to create different atmospheres you have to have areas of lesser light and areas of more,” says Tomeu, expanding on the ability of light to induce more calm or activity. While luxury homes are their speciality, the experts at Espaisillum have also been entrusted with everything from bodegas to shopping centres. “We’re open to everything. The key is to keep evolving,” Tomeu concludes, making it clear that Espaisillum is set to continue lighting the way across the Balearic Islands. •

Para él, la iluminación no es algo que se añada una vez construida la vivienda, sino un punto importante a tener en cuenta mientras se elaboran los planos.

Tomeu ha acumulado una gran experiencia en el sector de la iluminación, que comenzó de joven trabajando en el negocio familiar de instalaciones eléctricas. “Como soy una persona rebelde, dejé el núcleo familiar y me puse a trabajar por mi cuenta”, dice con una sonrisa. Fue ascendiendo hasta llegar a supervisar la creación de un departamento de iluminación en una gran empresa. Sin embargo, la crisis de 2008 y la inminente venta del negocio le llevaron a tomar una decisión que cambió su vida. Para entonces, había descubierto que le interesaba mucho más la iluminación que la instalación. Con dos proveedores de iluminación dispuestos a confiar en él, montó su propio negocio. “Empezamos con dos mesas, dos sillas, dos ordenadores y dos marcas”, dice. El edificio en el que nos encontramos pertenecía a su abuelo y en su día fue un almacén de pieles. Tomeu siente verdadero cariño por el lugar y ha transformado el montacargas en un elemento atractivo y, por supuesto, bellamente iluminado.

Espaisillum ha crecido considerablemente desde su fundación hace 8 años. Hoy en día trabaja con marcas de primera línea como Kreon, Modular y la empresa de iluminación exterior Simes. Son marcas que están innovando continuamente. En cuanto a los diseñadores de decorativo, lo que más le impresiona a Tomeu son las cautivadoras creaciones de Davide Groppi y eldivertido estilo vintage de Louis Poulsen. “Cada edificio requiere materiales e iluminación diferentes”, dice Tomeu. “No hay dos casas iguales aunque lo parezcan”.

Un temor habitual es que no haya suficiente luz en una casa. “Lo curioso es que para crear diferentes ambientes hay que tener zonas de menos luz y zonas de más luz”, comenta, modificando la intensidad de la luz para generar más calma o más actividad. Aunque las viviendas de lujo son su especialidad, a los expertos de Espaisillum también se les ha confiado desde bodegas hasta centros comerciales. “Estamos abiertos a todo. La clave es seguir evolucionando”, concluye Tomeu, dejando claro que Espaisillum está llamado a seguir iluminando el camino por todas las Islas Baleares. •

Der Ausstellungsraum von Espaisillum ist deutlich ruhiger als der belebte Standort an der Porta Sant Antoni. Die raffinierte, architektonische Beleuchtung zeigt, wie sehr die Beleuchtung eine entspannende Atmosphäre schaffen kann. „Wir wollen Räume schaffen, die wirklich etwas bewirken, die einen nähren und etwas in einem wecken“, sagt Direktor Tomeu Frontera. Für ihn ist die Beleuchtung nicht etwas, das man nach dem Bau einer Immobilie hinzufügt, sondern ein wichtiger Punkt, der bereits bei der Planung berücksichtigt wird.

Tomeu hat viel Erfahrung in der Beleuchtungsbranche gesam melt, seit er als junger Bursche im Elektroinstallationsbetrieb der Familie arbeitete. „Da ich ein rebellischer Mensch bin, verließ ich den Schoß der Familie und machte mich selbständig“, sagt er lächelnd. Er arbeitete sich nach oben und leitete schließlich den Aufbau einer Beleuchtungsabteilung in einem großen Unternehmen. Die Krise 2008 und der bevorstehende Verkauf des Unternehmens veranlassten ihn jedoch, eine lebensverändernde Entscheidung zu treffen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte er entdeckt, dass er sich viel mehr für die Beleuchtung als für die Installation interessierte. Mit zwei Beleuchtungsanbietern, die ihm Vertrauen schenkten, machte er sich selbstständig. „Wir begannen mit zwei Schreibtischen, zwei Stühlen, zwei Computern und zwei Marken“, sagt er. Das Gebäude, in dem wir uns befinden, gehörte seinem Großvater und war früher ein Lederlager. Tomeu fühlt sich dem Ort sehr verbunden und hat den Lastenaufzug in ein attraktives und natürlich schön beleuchtetes Element verwandelt.

Espaisillum ist seit seiner Gründung vor 8 Jahren erheblich gewachsen. Heute arbeitet es mit Spitzenmarken wie Kreon, Modular und dem Außenbeleuchtungsunternehmen Simes zusammen. Das sind Marken, die sich ständig erneuern. Was die Einrichtungsdesigner betrifft, so ist Tomeu am meisten von den fesselnden Kreationen von Davide Groppi und dem verspielten Vintage-Stil von Louis Poulsen beeindruckt. „Jedes Gebäude erfordert andere Materialien und Beleuchtungen“, sagt Tomeu. „Kein Haus gleicht dem anderen, auch wenn es vielleicht so aussieht.“

Eine häufige Befürchtung ist, dass es in einem Haus nicht genug Licht geben wird. „Das Lustige daran ist, dass man, um unterschiedliche Atmosphären zu schaffen, Bereiche mit weniger Licht und Bereiche mit mehr Licht haben muss“, sagt Tomeu und geht auf die Fähigkeit des Lichts ein, mehr Ruhe oder Aktivität zu erzeugen.

Obwohl Luxuswohnungen ihre Spezialität sind, wurden die Experten von Espaisillum auch mit vielem anderen betraut, von Bodegas bin hin zu Einkaufszentren. „Wir sind für alles offen. Das Wichtigste ist, dass wir uns ständig weiterentwickeln“, schließt Tomeu und macht deutlich, dass Espaisillum auch in Zukunft den Weg auf den Balearen erleuchten wird. •
