Tracy’s Helmet
In 1983, I managed to end upside down underwater in a Thrush after an overloaded takeoff.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
If you only read one article in the February issue of AgAir Update, be sure it is Tracy Thurman’s “Hands on Flying” column about ag-pilot helmets, “Three Pounds”. Tracy is an excellent writer (has some western books on Amazon) with a very enticing dialogue when it comes to making a point. He has the ability to drive home something important related to our industry with a bit of dry wit, making for a good read. Tracy’s column this month about helmets is a perfect example of how he can make the reader sit back and soak in his words. The following is an excerpt: “Consider this: everything that is you, your ideas, your personality, your dreams, the way you walk, talk, eat and sleep, everything that is your life and essence is completely and only contained within three pounds of gelatinous goop floating around in grease encased in about a quarter inch of bone.” Tracy is describing your brain and goes on to explain how the helmet is an important component to protecting those three pounds. He acknowledges some pilots don’t wear helmets, but he also proves that’s probably not a good idea. With high-tech helmets that are available today; lightweight, noise canceling, smaller overall size, made of space-age strong materials, I agree. I vividly remember in the late 1970s (because I can recall the approximate year based on the aircraft I was flying) I was approaching to land in my Ag-Cat. I had the left side door open and streamlining in the wind. This was before airconditioning. I did not have the chinstrap snapped in place. For whatever reason, I stuck my head out into the wind to look back and instantly my coveted helmet flew off my head to land in the swamp below. I was young at the time, about 25 or 26 years old, and bullet proof. “What the heck? I just lost a $600 helmet (the price in those days). What did I
need a “crash” helmet for? If I was going to crash, I wouldn’t fly the aircraft!” I’m sure you’ve heard that cliche before; a dumb statement. I don’t recall when I decided to buy another helmet, but I did. Thank goodness, because in 1983, I managed to end upside down underwater in a Thrush after an overloaded takeoff. When the aircraft went over its nose and onto its back at 70 mph into the water, it was not pretty. After I finally stopped trying to breath water and mud upside down, strapped in the cockpit, I came to my senses and kicked my way out of the Thrush. There wasn’t much kicking to do, as a good portion of the canopy was gone. If not for the helmet I was wearing, it is very likely I wouldn’t be writing this editorial today.
Many pilots will be starting their season in the coming months, while many are finishing and others have already started a new season for 2020. Don’t let the mild inconvenience of wearing a helmet stop you from wearing it. If you are uncomfortable with your helmet, buy another one that is comfortable. It may take a long flying day’s earnings to pay for it, but it will be worth it. Helmets are one of those things you don’t need until you need it. Besides, you are going to spend hundreds of hours wearing it, make yourself as comfortable as possible. Wear the damn helmet! Until next month, Keep Turning…

On Target by Ted Delanghe
Along with this new generation of aircraft came a new generation of the Tiede family
A 10 | agairupdate.com
In the modern ag aviation world of turbines, GPS navigation, 500-gallon plus hoppers, flow control and digital readouts, we tend to forget that it has not always been that way. In 1966, a newly minted pilot by the name of Ralph Tiede bought a Piper Pawnee and started Target Airspray, a fledgling aerial application business near Strathmore, Alberta, about 20 miles due east of Calgary. It was all eyeball, stick and rudder flying, ground flaggers and with a 45-foot swath and 120-gallon loads, a whole lot of takeoffs and landings on runways, roads, fields, or just about anywhere that could accommodate the Pawnee. Given its small size, that indeed meant just about anywhere. The business grew in size and so did the aircraft. Ralph partnered with Neil McClain, first with two Cessna 180s, followed by an S-2D Snow, granddaddy of the Thrush and Air Tractor families of aircraft that would soon follow in its footsteps. Designed by Leland Snow in the mid ‘50s the S-2
was one of the first aircraft designed from the getgo solely for aerial application, featuring a P&W R1340 600 hp radial, a 300-gallon hopper and an ultra strong airframe. Affectionately called a tractor with wings, it ushered in a new era in the design and operation of ag aircraft. Along with this new generation of aircraft came a new generation of the Tiede family, with son Darren born to Ralph and Joan the same year Ralph started flying. Given those major events, not to mention growing up around aircraft, it is no surprise that Darren would sooner or later be in the ag aviation business. After earning his Commercial Pilot’s License, Darren began his spraying career in 1988. Following in the Tiede tradition of having two major events coincide, he married Cheryl that same year. Once again the Tiede family and Target Airspray continued to grow in tandem with Darren and Cheryl having four children: Ben, Diana, Kathleen and Evan. Soon Ralph and Darren were

operating as a father/son combo in two Thrush S2Rs. In 2008, after more than 40 years in the industry, Ralph retired from crop spraying with Darren taking over the reins of the business that same year. Today, Target Airspray consists of three 510P Thrushes flown by Darren and pilot Cody Rockafellow (with son Ben working his way into a seat), operating from three permanent bases in southern Alberta to accommodate their evergrowing customer base. In addition to expanding the company, Darren became more and more involved in fostering the Canadian ag aviation industry, first as a Board Member and
then President of the Alberta Aerial Applicators Association (AAAA), then as a Board Member and current President of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association (CAAA). During an interview with the author, Darren shared his thoughts on becoming CAAA president in 2019 and looking ahead to future developments. “One of the first things that became abundantly clear to me early on in the job of president is that you quickly have a great appreciation for all those who have gone before and who have contributed so much to our members and the industry at large. Darren stressed the critically important roles

the national organization and the provincial associations have in promoting the growth and safety of the Canadian aerial application industry. “Safety has been and will continue to be the number one priority across the board. We have been very proactive in getting that message out to our members and in developing a wide variety of resource materials that will make their operations safer, more efficient and more effective. That includes online training, safety videos, educational presentations, regulatory documents and a wide range of other benefits that help our members stay current on legislation, hazards and safe working procedures.” As with any industry, keeping up with regulatory changes is also a high priority for those in the aerial application business. The CAAA is at the forefront of working with Transport Canada, Canada’s national transportation regulatory agency. “We keep an open and active dialogue with Transport Canada in working with them to develop policies that are accessible, relevant and beneficial to our members. One current example is incorporating the new Crew Resource Management (CRM) requirements into daily ag operations. At first glance, the concept doesn’t seem particularly applicable to single seat aircraft, but once you get into particulars – for example threat and error management, situational awareness, pressure and stress – you find CRM is applicable to virtually any type of aviation operation,” explains Darren. As with any crop protection measure, whether it be by air or on the ground, another area of focus that is becoming more and more of an issue is dealing with the legal environment that has becoming increasingly more challenging to navigate. Darren noted, “It’s been a reality quite a while south of the border and we are beginning to see things such as class action lawsuits that simply didn’t effect the crop protection industry before. It’s something we just have to research and educate ourselves as part of a new reality.” Another high priority item for the CAAA is in working to get new products approved for aerial application. “It is a long process to get new products registered from Health Canada, a process that can take years. Along the way, we work closely with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) in promoting sustainable pest management, while ensuring new products, wherever possible, are registered for aerial application use.”
One specific example deals with product reevaluations. The use of mancozeb is currently under review by the PMRA. Mancozeb is a potato industry staple for fighting late blight and early blight, and users fear its loss would increase production costs to farmers, as well as removing a safe, established product for the effective management of disease resistance in potatoes. The CAAA gained a seat on the Mancozeb Task Force, which has been advocating the continued use of mancozeb. “Through the efforts of the Task Force and support from the CAAA,” Darren stressed, “we are hopeful that we will be able to continue the use of mancozeb in potatoes and other crops, as it is a proven cost-effective tool in our arsenal of fungicide applications.” The issue of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System units – more commonly referred to as drones - is an increasingly hot topic. “We know there are a wide range of potential uses for drones in crop protection covering crop assessment, soil analysis, pest population levels and the like. We have been proactive in bringing drone operators into our Association by offering them Allied Industry Membership, for those who do not provide aerial application services, but who support the aerial application industry.” Darren added, “I don’t know if anyone has a solid handle on just what unmanned aircraft will mean for the future of our industry, but one thing is certain – they are here and they are here to stay.” Darren is very positive about the future of the aerial application business. “When I look ahead, I can see a lot of good things coming down the road. The growth in the use of biological pesticides that are very target specific, advances in sensor imaging technology that will allow us to pinpoint with increasing accuracy the state of crop growth and pest infestation, better training not only initially for someone entering the industry, but continued education and training across the board.” As with agriculture in general, the aerial application business has had its share of ups and downs. On a final note, Darren addressed that very point. “I know there will be a lot of challenges in the future, but that comes with the territory. We must always keep our eye on the fact that we are a critically important part of growing healthy crops to feed the world. It’s a job we take seriously and it’s something we will continue to work on making aerial application safer and more effective than ever before.” agairupdate.com | A 13

Three Pounds
A helmet is to aid in keeping a survivable crash from becoming fatal.
A 14 | agairupdate.com
“They call them crash helmets don’t they” The pilot asked. “Yes, I guess they do.” I answered. The guy shrugged and grinned. “Well, I don’t intend to crash.” With that he walked out to the airplane strapped in and went to work bare headed, save for a Dave Clark headset. I always thought that was a pretty stupid thing for an otherwise intelligent man to say. As far as I know, the guy never did crash which is very good. Especially since he never wore a helmet. There’s been a lot of guys who haven’t been that fortunate. And it doesn’t matter how good a pilot you are, or think you are. The worst can happen to you. I’ll go out on a limb here and surmise that there haven’t been very many crashes where the pilot intended to crash. And I’ll bet most thought it would never happen to them. Arrogance won’t save you in a crash. A fat log book won’t cushion the impact. A helmet should be required equipment. There, I said it. I know, there’s a lot of pilots who work without them. It’s their choice to do so. I know operators who don’t care if you wear a helmet or not. Others will not allow you to fly one of their airplanes without one. Chinstrap secured at all times. Consider this; Everything that is you, your ideas, your personality, your dreams, the way you walk, talk, eat and sleep, everything that is your life and essence is completely, and only contained within three pounds of gelatinous goop floating around in grease encased in about a quarter inch of bone. That’s it. There’s no back up, no saved files, nothing, nada, zilch. That’s all you have. The good Lord built us to withstand some pretty significant bumps and bruises, He didn’t design survivability of being slammed into the ground at high velocity surrounded by steel. There have
been more than several ag pilots who have walked away from crashes because they were wearing their helmets. There’s been some who might have walked away but didn’t because they weren’t wearing a helmet, or their helmets weren’t worn properly. A fatal crash isn’t survivable no matter what you’re wearing. That’s true, there are some wrecks that a human just can’t live through. There’s not much we can do about that. However, the reason for a helmet is to aid in keeping a survivable crash from becoming fatal. That’s a big difference. Life and death. There’s a lot of hard surfaces in the cockpit of an airplane. The violent dynamics of an airplane crash will slam your skull into any part of it. Bone is pound for pound stronger than steel, however, you only have a little bit of it. Research shows that it takes 520 pounds of force to crush a human skull. Five hundred and twenty pounds… If a guy weighed two hundred pounds, a 2.6 G impact would be enough to break his skull. 2.6 G ain’t much my friends, especially when you consider most crashes involve much greater G forces than that. Much greater. After the bone is gone brother, the rest is history. Of course, you may not die. You might survive the crash. Then you’ll have to live through the aftermath. I spoke to a former soldier once at the V.A. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury. Was it enemy fire that caused it? Nope. He fell off of a truck and hit his head on the ground. Busted his skull. A simple accident. He had to learn to live again. His vison is impaired. He gets migraines. He walks with a hitched gait having to concentrate on making his legs move. His wife drives him where he needs to go. Mostly doctor’s appointments. He said he once was strong and fast, a regular badass he was. Now, he has to have help in just about
INTERNATIONAL
everything he does. He said he got lost once in a grocery store. “I was scared to death man. Scared. I ain’t never been scared and here I was in a damn grocery store about to cry like a little kid because I couldn’t figure out where I was. Hell, I can’t even make a living anymore.” The man’s face was contorted in shame and sadness. He clenched his fist and slammed it on his thigh. “I wish I had of just died.” That’s a hell of a place for a man to be. Three pounds. Surrounded by a quarter inch of bone…
You need to protect the most important part of your body. Your head. You need to protect the most important part of your body. Your head. Within it is contained everything you need to function. Everything you need to live is tied directly to what’s floating around in your skull. Take care of it. Protect it. It’s where you keep your memories and your future. Once its broke. It’s broke for good. Ag pilots have a wide selection of helmets and gear available to them these days. Helmet technology has advanced greatly since the days when pilots were wearing old football helmets. New, light weight, custom fitted and comfortable with top of the line sound systems installed. Noise cancellation, bluetooth, stereophonics and any color combination you want. Get one or two visors and use them. No, they aren’t cheap. Some cost as much as a pickup truck did back when grandpappy was hauling dust in Stearmans. It’s a very worthy investment. Anything you spend on your survivability is money well spent. It’s not the cost of the helmet you should worry about, but the value of what’s contained inside. Keep that in mind. Fly well and stay SAFE!

Airstrip Gradient Calculation by Mike Feeney
The history of this simple graph goes back to 1981 when, working for the NZ Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport, I devised a similar ‘user-friendly’ means for pilots to quickly determine to what extent airstrip slope increased its effective operational length. It was published in articles I wrote for their “Flight Safety” journal and was primarily intended as an aid for the training of pilots undergoing specialized flight instruction for an Agricultural Pilot Rating. In the early 2000s, I joined Wanganui Aero Work, a large New Zealand operator of fixed-wing agricultural aircraft and Part 135 helicopters. In my role as as Quality Assurance and Safety Manager, I was involved in airstrip standards, including advising growers on improvement methods and, on a few occasions, the siting and works planning for new airstrips. At this time, A 16 | agairupdate.com
there were no country-wide standards for farm airstrips; particularly for the increasing number of heavy turbo-prop aircraft which are unable to economically operate from many of the historic strips which suited types such as the Fletcher FU24, DHC-2 Beaver, Cessna 188 Agwagon, etc. Some pilots may operate their aircraft from sloping rural airstrips. This article may well prove of interest to them. If you are not sure how to work out the gradient of an airstrip, there is an easy method which you can use. Simply note your altimeter reading at the top and bottom of the airstrip (or you could use your GPS if you are viewing several satellites), then walk out the length and use the formula: Height difference divided by airstrip length and multiply by 100. Example for a typical airstrip: Length = 1,300 feet. Height difference = 90 feet
INTERNATIONAL
= 90/1,300 = .06923....7% for practical purposes. An example for a really steep ag-strip: 150/800 = 18.75 % (5% is about 3 degrees). When you look at the 20% slope on the graph, you may think it does not appear to be that steep. Let me assure you that when you are approaching such an airstrip, particularly with a tailwind which is quite normal during ag-operations, it will appear to be much fore-shortened and not to be attempted without training by an experienced person. I have operated from airstrips steeper than 20% and, until one gets used to them, they appear rather daunting indeed. In the earlier days with under-powered aircraft, such as the Fletcher FU-24, 225 and 240 BHP models, you needed to touch down well up the strip and keep moving to reach the loading area as it might prove very difficult to taxi up. I do recall having to keep the power well up in the FU-24 to prevent the aircraft from falling back onto its tail, then carefully turning to take off again and make another attempt. But, I was new to the Fletcher then and soon learned to be much more ‘aggressive’ and just fly straight at the airstrip face, get the nose coming up and up and up, whilst pouring on the power as one touched down looking up at the sky. Most exhilarating indeed! Recalling the periods when I was training new chums into steep strips, I was very wary of those pilots who were overly timid. Some had a strong tendency to ‘stalk’ the airstrip and get too low and too slow, ending up using far too much power just to make the threshold, thus leaving themselves with little reserve with which to execute the transition needed to equal the airstrip slope during the flare. This was particularly pronounced at the high altitude strips in Papua New Guinea. The look
on their faces when they went for more power and found that the throttle was already wide open! (This was using non-turbocharged engines when the max power available could be only 60% of that at sea level) For take-off, one carefully selected an aiming point in the distance, opened to max power and simply fell off the loading area into space. Woe you, if you failed to use the same aiming target each take-off. The effect of gravity is non-linear and is a function of the sine of the airstrip slope. For example: Slope 12 degrees = sine 12 = 0.20791 = about one fifth of the aircraft’s weight will be the vertical component. So, if the aircraft weighs 5,000 lbs., then acceleration will be enhanced by the equivalent of 1,000 lbs of thrust. This equates to another 300 BHP. In the case of a 400 BHP FU-24, this is a large help as this aircraft has a static thrust of about 1,500 lbs. An overloaded FU-24-400 might haul a tonne from a 250-metre steep airstrip, but needs close to 450500 metres from a level grassed surface. Let’s look at an extreme, ridiculous example. Say the strip has a slope of 80 degrees; virtually vertical. The sine of 80 degrees is 0.98481...near enough to unity. So the acceleration force will be the weight of the aircraft plus the propeller thrust. That is 32 feet per second, plus thrust (ignoring drag). Flying airspeed will be attained in a few seconds, but is the take-off distance really almost zero? It all depends on how we define take-off distance. I define it for sloping airstrips as that distance which is required to lift off and reach such an airspeed as will enable the aircraft to sustain flight clear of ground effect and attain at least level flight. As you rocket off the end of a steep strip, you agairupdate.com | A 17
INTERNATIONAL
have an increasing rate of descent until you can execute the energy exchange required to attain level flight. This eats up distance with a heavy aeroplane. With our near-vertical airstrip case, the real take-off distance will be considerable, unless you want to just keep on diving. And there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’. Even on moderate slopes, you become airborne well below your starting point due to the trade-off. If you need to climb to your target spreading area, you will burn a lot more fuel to make up for the so-called ‘free ride’! Of course, many airstrips have a variable slope; generally steeper at the top and becoming more level towards the end. Some may even rise somewhat and then fall. So what we are considering is the “mean” or average slope. There are some variables here which I shall not venture into now. However, for practical purposes, just remember that if there is a favorable height difference between the point where you begin rolling and the spot where you lift off, then you benefit by that difference by way of potential energy. Another complex matter is the effect that the surface has on take-off ground roll. The main predicating factors are tyre pressure, profile and wheel loading. Most New Zealand grasssurfaced airstrips are actually in a ‘plastic’ state and deform under the force exerted by a tyre. During the earlier stages of the roll, a sort of moving ‘chock’ is created in front of the tyre.

The effect lessens as wing lift increases until the aircraft is beginning to ‘ride’ over the grass. The experienced ag-pilot can gain a fairly reasonable idea of airstrip plasticity and expected rolling resistance by simply walking the airstrip and every now and then digging the heel of one’s boot into the surface. You sort of get to know how sluggish the aircraft will be during the early part of the takeoff...it’s a ‘feel’ thing. When I was measuring take-off performance of ag-aircraft on soft surfaces, I would get down on the ground straight after the aircraft had passed to measure the surface deformation and observe it slowly resuming its former shape. Some loader drivers and farmers must have considered me to be at least slightly eccentric if I had not explained what I was doing. Oh well, perhaps they were right! The graph in this article is not a “legal” item of performance data. It is a guide only. It has been used by many ag-pilots, none have advised that it is significantly in error. As I said earlier, it is a result of a huge number of directly observed takeoffs by overloaded ag-aircraft and from my own ag and bush flying experience.

Restoration of a Special Pawnee by Bill Lavender
The Piper Pawnee PA-25 with a Lycoming 150 horsepower engine was the first production aircraft specifically designed for agricultural aviation. Piper Aircraft hired Fred Weick from Texas A & M University in 1953 to help with the engineering of the aircraft. However, it was 1959 before the Pawnee was available for ag pilots. The aircraft was an evolution of Weick’s AG-1, the Transland AG-2 and Transland AG-3 aircraft, using as many Piper parts as possible. Thus, was born the Piper Pawnee PA-25. Between the years 1959 through 1981, 5,167 Pawnees of various models were built. ➤

In 1971, Mr. Ray Wessells converted a standard Pawnee into a tandem, dual cockpit version ideal for training ag-pilots and was called a Pawnee Fledgling. The aircraft was used at various locations throughout the world before finally in 1998 was bought by Trabajos Aereos Espejo S.L. of Cordoba Spain. Trabajos Aereos Espejo S.L totally renovated the aircraft and operated it from 1998 to 2015 at a Spanish training school. During that time, approximately 400 pilots were trained using the aircraft during 42 CAVAG courses. While traveling in Spain in 2016, Antonio Carlos da Silva (Carlito) of Tangara Aeroagricola discovered this dual cockpit Pawnee. For two years, Carlito tried to negotiate the purchase of the aircraft so he could export it to Brazil and restore to like-new condition. Finally, in 2018, Carlito was successful in purchasing the Pawnee and the aircraft arrived in Brazil in a container. With its original red and white paint, the aircraft was inspected by ANAC and allowed to be imported to the Tangará Aeroagrícola maintenance facility in Orlândia. months, Carlito and Tangará Aeroagrícola fullfilled their dream and completely restored the aircraft. With its original red and white paint, the aircraft was inspected by ANAC and permitted to be imported to Tangara Aeroagricola’s maintenance facility in Orlandia. After nine months, Carlito and Tangara Aeroagricole painstakingly fullfilled a dream and fully restored the aircraft. Why was Carlito so dedicated to bringing this Pawnee back to Brazil? It was because he wanted to donate the aircraft as a legacy to his three grandchildren; Roberto Magalhães Silva Ribeiro, Matheus Vilela Rosa Silva and João Vilela Rosa Silva. The aircraft is ANAC certified and airworthy. To maintain its airworthiness, the aircraft is occasionally flown during the year only by Tangara Aeroagricola ag-pilots. This is the same dual cockpit Piper Pawnee PA-25 that was on display at the 2019 SINDAG congress in Sertãozinho where many pilots were able to see a true, historical agricultural aircraft that represented the beginning of modern ag-aircraft. The company got its first service contract in Tangará da Serra, MT, to meet pasture sowing and fertilizing requirements from a local manufacturer, hence the name Tangará Aeroagricola. In the 1990s, a rise in the demand for services due to sugar cane, soybeans and cotton planting in the Orlândia region made it an attractive location for Tangara Aeroagricola’s services. Now,
the company is permanently settled in Orlândia, SP. Today, the company offers three main services: ANAC approved CHE970901 for aircraft maintenance, used aircraft sales and aerial applications. It is also an authorized Air Tractor service center for AeroGlobo Aeronaves/ Lane Aviation based in Botucatu SP. For its aerial application services, the company fleet consists of aircraft with capacities from 600 liters up to 1,800 liters; all around, one of the largest ag aircraft companies in Brazil with 12 Air Tractors, two Piper PA-36 Braves with 375 HP and three PA-25 Pawnees with 260 HP.

A Surprise in a Turn!
We have an image to look after. If we have to prove something, it should be our professionalism.
A 26 | agairupdate.com
Last week I received a message from a longtime friend telling me about a situation that made me reflect, as he is a pilot whom I respect and admire. For obvious reasons, I will keep confidential the person and companies involved. He was flying a Pawnee had just over 25 gallons in the hopper. Suddenly, during a turn, he heard a crack and realized that something was wrong with the aircraft; the control stick no longer commanded the ailerons. The aileron cable pulley support that had broken. He told me both ailerons were deflected downward. His reaction was to use the rudder pedals to turn and level the wings. He decided to return to the base at a low altitude, so if something even more serious happened maybe the aircraft could be controlled long enough to land straight ahead. I asked him what was the angle of bank in the turn when this happened? He answered, “45 degrees.” I still wonder what end of this story would have been if he was “bending” the tiny Pawnee into a knife edge turn. Fortunately, he landed safely and without further damage to the aircraft. Mainly because this pilot always flies inside the flight envelope of the aircraft. Afterwards, I remembered a video called “Turn Smart”. The video is on YouTube and is highly instructive. Wayne Handley, the pilot in the video, explains some of the circumstances that can lead to a stall and how to get out of it. He makes an interesting observation and I will paraphrase: “Just as an example, I will use the 30-second turn as a reference, simply because it’s easy to do the math. “If we have a morning where we perform 100 turns with an average time of 30 seconds each, and are well on the edge, suppose we back off by 10%, then we have a 33 second turn. The aircraft
will be much more inside the flight envelope. The pilot will be much more comfortable and safer, especially in case of an emergency. Okay, so we added three seconds to those 100 turns. Now, we have 300 seconds added to a working morning. That is only five minutes! It is very easy to recover five minutes of your operation.”
A video called “Turn Smart” is on YouTube and is highly instructive. Wayne Handley, the pilot in the video, explains some of the circumstances that can lead to a stall and how to get out of it. Some pilots still complain about comments that are commonly directed at our profession; like “the agricultural pilot is crazy” or, “these pilots are not afraid of anything”. We know this is not true. If we stop to reflect, some comments that at first glance do inflame some egos. The comments are actually quite pejorative. We should not fly like we want to validate those kind of comments. We are not crazy. We are trained professionals and pay dearly for our training. We have an image to look after. If we have to prove something, it should be relaying our professionalism to those who do not understand what it is that we do.

NAAA INSIGHTS
National Agricultural Aviation Association
Meet NAAA’s 2020 Leadership Team The National Agricultural Aviation Association is pleased to announce its 2020 officer team, led by NAAA President Darrin Pluhar. Serving alongside Pluhar are Vice President Mark Kimmel, Secretary JT Helms and Treasurer Mike Rivenbark. Let’s meet this year’s officers.
President Darrin Pluhar (Montana) Experience is a quality of paramount importance for a skilled leader to possess. This is especially true for NAAA’s president. The association’s leader should have an impressive resumé of serving at both the state, regional and national level; of educating the importance of safety and environmental professionalism to industry peers; of knowing about the nuances of aerial application in multiple states; and of being aware of aviation beyond agriculture to include other broader general aviation (GA) issues. Darrin B 2 | agairupdate.com
Pluhar, NAAA’s 2020 president, possesses this experience and more. “It is a privilege to have been chosen by the NAAA board of directors to represent this great organization as president for 2020,” Pluhar said. “I am humbled beyond belief.” Pluhar owns Plu’s Flying Service in Ekalaka, Montana. Since establishing the aerial application business in 1996, he has been servicing producers across southeastern Montana for more than 20 years. Plu’s Flying Service operates three aircraft. Pluhar hires pilots as needed but does most of the spraying himself. He primarily applies herbicides to winter wheat and spring wheat, but he also treats a great deal of pasture and alfalfa, with some safflower, sunflowers and corn. His season starts in April and ends in November. Besides Montana, Pluhar is licensed as a pesticide applicator in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas. Pluhar has been an active member of the Association of Montana Aerial Applicators (AMAA) and NAAA for years. He has served on AMAA’s board since 2000. In 2008-2009, he went through the NAAA/Syngenta Leadership Training Program, which develop new leaders and advocates for the agricultural aviation industry. Pluhar served as AMAA’s president in 2010-2011. He joined NAAA’s board of directors as AMAA’s state representative in 2013 and has served on several key committees, including NAAA’s Finance, Government Relations and Safety/Federal Aviation Regulations committees. He served as NAAA’s treasurer in 2016 and as its vice president in 2019. Pluhar is a certified flight instructor in addition to being an aerial applicator. He believes safety
UNITED STATES
should always be the aerial application industry’s top priority and is a strong proponent of NAAA’s efforts to improve ag pilot recurrent training. To that end, he became a PAASS presenter in 2016 and has served since then as one of about a dozen presenters who deliver the Professional Aerial Applicators’ Support System safety education program, known as the PAASS Program for short, at state and regional ag aviation conventions around the country. Pluhar volunteers as a PAASS presenter first and foremost because, as he said, “if we can just do or say one thing to keep a pilot out of a bad situation that is a win.” During his term as president, Pluhar wants NAAA to focus on additional member services. One being an association health care plan that would allow NAAA and other associations to come together as a larger pool of insureds, thereby spreading out risk, which may allow for more competitive rates for members. The ability allowing groups to pool with other insureds throughout the U.S. is the subject of an active court case that will be decided in the not-too-distant future. “Adding member-only services should only increase NAAA membership,” Pluhar said.

Vice President Mark Kimmel (Mississippi) Mark Kimmel is NAAA’s 2020 vice president. He owns Dixie Dusters Inc. in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Kimmel has two Air Tractor AT-502B planes and two pilots. Dixie Dusters provides aerial application services to farmers in the Mississippi Delta. Kimmel also farms year-round on 3,000 acres, growing cotton, soybeans and corn. This is Kimmel’s third term as an NAAA officer. He was first elected as NAAA Secretary in 2017. He served as NAAA Treasurer in 2018 and remained on NAAA’s Executive Committee as the immediate past treasurer in 2019. Given ➤

his farming obligations, it is no small sacrifice for Kimmel to commit to the time and travel demands placed on NAAA’s officers, as he has done twice before. He accepted NAAA’s nomination for vice president because he felt duty bound to serve the association as others have before him. Kimmel knows how much work NAAA’s staff and board members put into serving the industry through the association and wasn’t going to turn down a leadership position if that’s what his colleagues wanted. “They give it their full attention, and everybody takes it seriously. And it’s worth people giving it that much time,” he said. “That’s why even though I’m busy, busy, busy, and it puts a lot of stress on me in the winter, I do it because I feel like we cannot not give to something that’s fighting for us.” As chairman of the NAAA Museum Committee, which he has been since 2016, preserving and promoting the industry’s history is important to Kimmel. Accordingly, he is excited about the efforts NAAA is undertaking to celebrate the industry’s 100th anniversary in 2021. “It’s such a wonderful opportunity to put ag aviation in the public’s eye,” he said. As vice president, Kimmel looks forward to promoting the benefits of agricultural aviation and the value of NAAA in 2020. “It’s an honor, and I’m proud to do it,” he said.
Secretary John “JT” Helms (Allied Industry) With a track record of active involvement since his first appointment to NAAA’s board in 2011, B 4 | agairupdate.com
John “JT” Helms has never been one to say “not it” or “not now” when it comes to contributing his time and talents to NAAA and its sister organization, the National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation (NAAREF). When NAAA’s Nominating Committee approached him about serving as the association’s secretary in 2020, he immediately said yes. Helms is a vice president and the agricultural aviation product line manager at Old Republic Aerospace Inc., one of the insurance underwriters serving the agricultural aviation sector. He is based at Old Republic Aerospace’s office in Kennesaw, GA. He has been in the aviation insurance business since he became an insurance agent in 1999.
NAAA is fortunate to have a dedicated group of officers and volunteer leaders serving on its board of directors, but there is also strength in numbers. Helms has participated on several NAAA committees since his first appointment in 2011 to NAAA’s board, including its Insurance, Awards and Convention committees. He is also on NAAREF’s board and serves on its PAASS Program Development and Capital Campaign committees. This year marks Helms’ 10th year on NAAA’s board. He received the Related Industry Award in 2018 for his service to NAAA and the industry and continues to volunteer for a simple reason. “It’s definitely the people that keep me motivated and wanting to do more and keep coming back,” Helms said. “It’s a great group of people, and I like what they do and how they do it, and I like being able to help any way I can.” Helms graduated from Mississippi State University in 1989 and proudly served as a commissioned officer and UH-60 Black Hawk pilot in the 11th Armored Cavalry of the U.S. Army. Helms lives in Roswell, Georgia, with his wife, Lynette, and their three teenage children, Jaylee, Casey and Jackson. ➤

Treasurer Mike Rivenbark (North Carolina) Mike Rivenbark has been an active member of NAAA and the North Carolina Agricultural Aviation Association (NCAAA) since his first year as an ag pilot 10 years ago. Henry Moore of Moore’s Aerial Applicators in Clinton, North Carolina, gave him his start as an ag pilot in 2010. Rivenbark became NCAAA’s executive director a year later, in 2011. He stepped down after nine years as NCAAA’s executive director at the end of 2019, before starting his one-year term as NAAA’s 2020 treasurer. After his first season flying for Moore, Rivenbark went to Nebraska and flew for Rick Boardman from 2011 to ’16. He bought Moore’s Aerial Applicators from Moore in 2017. The sale included an Air Tractor AT-402-B ag plane. Moore’s Aerial Applicators was built on spraying blueberries and vegetables, and that holds true today. Rivenbark mostly sprays blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cucumbers and squash, but he also treats row crops, such as corns, beans and wheat. Rivenbark went through NAAA’s Leadership Training Program in 2013-14. He served as the North Carolina representative on NAAA’s board from ’15 to ’19. He chaired NAAA’s Membership Committee in 2019. This year he is chairing two committees: Budget & Finance and Membership. The benefits of membership in NAAA and state ag aviation associations are plain to see from Rivenbark’ s vantage point as a state leader and an NAAA board member, but the hidden hand NAAA B 6 | agairupdate.com
has in keeping ag pilots in business is something some applicators lose sight of in the throes of the flying season. “A lot of people have no clue what goes behind the scenes to let them be able to continue to fly. That’s where the NAAA membership is really important,” Rivenbark said. “Everybody benefits from it whether they realize it or not. That would be a very bad day to not have NAAA behind us as an operator. The regulations would be to the point possibly where there would be no more agricultural aviation in the U.S.” Rivenbark is eager to learn more about NAAA’s operations this year. “As treasurer, it’s going to be a whole lot more hands-on than I have been before. So I’m looking forward to that,” he said. Rivenbark lives in Morehead City, North Carolina, with his wife, Tiffany, and their 2-yearold daughter, Anna Keith.

“We hit that sod at just about 90 miles per hour, charged right through the sod area and across the rows in the cotton field! When we finally stopped, both Burnham units were scattered behind us in the cotton and we just sat there in the car and shook. The farmer drove up on the turning row right by us, looked over, shook his head, and I heard him mutter: ‘I don’t know just what they expect that damn thing to do, but one thing for sure, it will never fly!”’ Endless testing prevailed in the production and introduction of agricultural chemicals, even in the late 1940s and early 1950s. By 1950, many excellent products were available, including many new hydrocarbons plus organophosphates such as parathion, methyl-parathion, and TEPP. Very much needed, and not yet available, was a suitable liquid defoliant for cotton growers. Calcium cyanamid special grade, the old “Black Annie,” was still the only thing available. But commercial firms, particularly Chipman Chemical Company, began experimenting with soluble sodium chlorate as a cotton defoliant. Most of the test work with this product was done in the Mississippi Delta in 1950 and
1951 under the supervision of Chipman’s field representative Orel Ottwell. Ottwell worked out application arrangements with MV AS and massive field tests began during defoliating season, using a wide range of dosages. Sodium chlorate was supplied in a crystal-like powder that could be dissolved in water with a lot of manpower and stirring. After exhaustive tests over two full seasons, it was found that two to three pounds of the technical material applied at the rate of five gallons per acre would do a good job and liquid defoliating became a reality.
Liquid Defoliants Finally, at the insistence of agricultural flying people all over the cotton belt, Chipman began packaging the material in true liquid form, utilizing great looking black and orange striped drums. This new item was called “Shed-A-Leaf L.” Spurred by this success, other commercial firms went to work with the development of defoliants. Within a short time, the highly concentrated phosphate materials made the scene, among them DEF and Folex. Other experiments with defoliants were not so successful. Magnesium chlorate would defoliate cotton, but would also bum up aircraft and

Below Clockwise from one o’clock American Dusting Company was an innovator in leasing aircraft, equipment, and pilots to other firms. This service enabled many operators to become involved in ag aviation. The widespread operations of American Dusting Company required close cooperation between management and pilots. Here pilot Lou McWilliams (helmet) gets preflight instructions. View of completely rebuilt Stearman from American Dusting Company, late 1950s. airports, especially when it came in contact with dried residues from organophosphates. Mysterious fires began springing up around loading ramps, until magnesium chlorate was quickly and fortunately removed from the market. In passing, it might be added that sodium chlorate, the commonly used product, will also fire up spontaneously under certain conditions and in the presence of phosphates. As a precautionary measure, manufacturers soon began adding a fire suppressant. Cautious operators also reduced fire potential by leaving the aircraft tank filled with water when not in use and making certain that ramps and exposed aircraft surfaces were thoroughly washed down. Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service had a long and colorful history. Unfortunately, one of its founders, Berkley Ellis, was killed in a crash in 1949. White and I continued our partnership until 1960, when I purchased 100 percent interest in the firm. White went back into flight school work, his first love. I finally sold the firm in 1970, semi-retiring from active operation. Many mechanics and ag pilots with MV AS established themselves as ag
aviation leaders and set up firms of their own throughout the agricultural flying world. In addition to pilots and mechanics, MV AS helped further the industry by producing some of the first satisfactory dispensing equipment available to the general aviation public. Among some of the better known firms that availed themselves of this service and equipment from the beginning were MidContinental Aircraft, operated by Dick Reade at Hayti, Missouri; Ueding Flying Service, operated by Bob Ueding at Vincennes, Indiana; Pecatonica Airport at Pecatonica, Illinois; any number of federal and stateoperated mosquito control districts in the South and Southwest; and the legendary J.B. “Doc” Alder, a physician turned ag operator from Carolina, who set up one of the largest ag flying operations in Central America. At one time, Alder operated a fleet of more than 20 Instant Change 450 P&W Stearmans in Nicaragua and was perhaps the first operator in the world to engage in oil spraying of banana plantations in that region. Later, we will review in more detail this and other Central American operations that blossomed in the early and mid 1950s. Another firm that contributed significantly ➤

to agricultural aviation expansion immediately after the War was American Dusting Company, originally located in Anadarko, Oklahoma. This firm was organized in 1945 by Clint Frye. In 1949, Frye joined with Chickasha Flying Service at Chickasha Oklahoma, making R.W. Erwin and L.H. King partners. By 1949, the firm had grown tremendously and had graduated from the low-powered, 40-gallon tank Cubs with which it had started. Clint Frye had, from the beginning, manufactured his own dispensing equipment and, in 1949, purchased 50 like-new Stearmans and began converting them into ag aircraft in his own shops. Pratt & Whitney engine conversions were made and, within a short time, American Dusting Company became one of the largest and most influential firms in the industry. Massive agricultural flying operations were conducted in Oklahoma and Texas, some of it original work such as the application of the selective material rotenone in lakes and streams under the auspices of state game and fish commissions. Rotenone became widely used by conservation departments in ridding bodies of water of unwanted specie& or even drastically reducing overpopulations for the benefit of sport and commercial fishing. In addition to such local work, particularly in the area of parathion application on small grains for the control of green bugs, American Dusting Company engaged heavily in transient

operations and was one of the first firms to engage in large scale DDT work on com borer in the com belt. At times, this operation was of such scope that many other operators from all over the country joined with American Dusting Company and great numbers of aircraft were kept busy working steadily northward as the growing season progressed. American Dusting Company perhaps initiated another innovation in 1950 by leasing aircraft, equipment, and pilots to other firms. This phase of the business was operated on a percentage rental basis and a great many operators were able to enter into business in this way. At one time or another, offices for this firm were in operation across Oklahoma and Texas, in places like Quanah, Munday, Hereford, Loveland, Rotan, Hollis, Floyado, Hobart, Snyder, Erick, and Vernon. Other American Dusting Company satellites were at Holyoke, Colorado; Imperial, Nebraska; and Artesia and Morarity, New Mexico. American Dusting Company became one of the largest and most prestigious operations ever organized. It is still going strong, though on a somewhat more limited basis under the direction of Ray Frye, son of founder Clint Frye. Ray Frye is a long-time supporter of the National Agricultural Aviation Association and is extremely active and well-known in the industry. He bases in Hereford, Texas.

REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE
Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com
Fieldwatch- Helping Chemical Applicators One State at a Time For many years I’ve heard our Chem-Man customers say how great it would be if there was a program that helped with identifying the sensitive fields, beehives, etc. for a chemical applicator. When you think about it, what chemical applicator in his right mind would want to mess up someone else’s crop? He just needs the tools to have the ability to do his job. I know that some of our applicators in Arkansas have B 20 | agairupdate.com
to fly around the area to see if they can identify what crops the growers are planting. This seems so archaic. Several years back, we started selling quite a few programs in the mid-states area where there are many beehives and also sensitive crops. We got on board using an interface with a company that was then called “Driftwatch” and is now known as “FieldWatch”. I was amazed when I

logged in and actually saw how many registries there were! Our customers are very happy with this release because we actually stream with the software. Streaming immediately displays the sensitive areas on our maps once an entry has been registered. I have met with Fieldwatch rep. Bob Walters multiple times at conventions and even had him speak at our Chem-Man class at the NAAA in Orlando this year and at this year’s Arkansas convention in Little Rock. I believe Fieldwatch is a vital tool for aerial applicators. Fieldwatch is expanding into more states each year. I was very excited when they came to my home state of Arkansas where I originally started Chem-Man. Bob said Arkansas is really working out well with many users registering their crops. I asked one of our new assistants, Kylie Meredith, to research the company from its website. Here is what she found: “Driftwatch was designed through collaborative efforts from staff at Purdue University’s Biological Engineering and Agricultural Communications departments with support from Purdue Cooperative Extension Specialists. The registry tool is designed to encourage interface between pesticide applicators and specialty crop growers. The program shows user-submitted locations of specialty sites and provides contact information for grower attached to the site of interest. each area submitted to the registry and is now operated by FieldWatch, a non-profit company created by Purdue. FieldWatch has four portals designed to meet different needs: DriftWatch for specialty producers, BeeCheck for beekeepers, CropCheck for row crop producers, and FieldCheck for applicators. Although these portals are designed for different sectors, they all work together in a single database, so an applicator can view all registered sites in one easy-toread map. The program requests a timeframe for sensitive sites and apiaries to help ensure the data is accurate and not from previous years’ plantings, which can prove extremely valuable for applicators planning their applications throughout the growing season.” Most ag operators that I talked to in Arkansas are not aware that the FieldCheck program exists (although many Arkansas growers are registered). I’ve sent a letter with an instruction sheet to help assist in this process. Hopefully, drift claims will be reduced. My vision for the future is that Fieldwatch will expand its service to all states where there are chemical applicators. I also believe someday there will be a “TowerWatch” where the soon to be database of towers will display on our maps. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Let’s make it happen! God’s Providential Control Of All The Nations On Earth
God will always accomplish His purposes. Disobeying God can bring severe consequences.
B 24 | agairupdate.com
God told Noah, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth…I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth” (Genesis 9:1, 11-13). Every rainbow reminds us of God’s unbroken and unending promises. God’s irrevocable covenants run throughout the entire Bible. God has given humans a certain amount of dominance over the earth; but ultimately God is controlling His universe to serve His eternal purposes. “These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood. The entire earth had one language and one speech” (Genesis 10:32-11:1). But when the people got to Shinar they decided to build a city and a tower that reached into the heavens, actually an idol of their own making to worship. They didn’t want to be scattered over the entire earth as God had ordered them. The Lord saw this and confused their language and the Lord scattered them over the face of the earth. God will always accomplish His purposes. Disobeying God can bring severe consequences: “They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7). John The Baptist said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven” (John 3:27). Pilate told Jesus, “Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?” Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above” (John 19:10-11). It’s foolishness
to think that we can rule all the circumstances of our life; a large part of our life is controlled by circumstances outside of our control. God said, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10). God’s providence is throughout the entire Bible. God chose Abraham to be the father of the nation of Israel, and He ordained all the circumstances that brought the Nation of Israel into existence. God’s providential care of Joseph is a good example (Genesis 45:5-9; 50:20). God chose Moses to lead the Hebrew people out of slavery. The book of Ruth is a good example of God’s providential control of the circumstances of Ruth’s life to bring David into this world. God chose David to replace Saul as king because of Saul’s disobedience. God’s providential control of the circumstances of David’s life is a good example of how God accomplishes His eternal purposes. The book of Esther is the only book in the Bible where God’s name is never mentioned, and yet it’s easy to see that God is in control of all the circumstances of the lives of the people and the nations involved. God moves in history and time to do what He purposed to do from the very beginning of His universe. God has determined the preappointed times and boundaries of every Nation (Acts 17:26). World history is “His-story” unfolding. The first leaders in America had a providential view of history. In an address to the United States Congress in 1866, historian George Bancroft reflected this predominant philosophy when he said: “That God rules in the affairs of men is as certain as any truth of physical science.” George Washington, speaking of America, said, “It is the story of remarkable interpositions of Divine Providence.” American history is filled with God’s supernatural interventions; Pocahontas

providentially saving John Smith’s life, and Samoset and Squanto helping the pilgrims to survive in America. The destruction of the French Naval fleet that was sent to destroy America in 1746. Even with its problems caused by ungodly men and women, America has been a divine work of God. Ben Franklin said in 1787: “That God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that “except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it” (Psalm 127:1). I firmly believe this, and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.” After the attacks on Perl Harbor Admiral Nimitz said that nine out of ten of the sailors of those ships were on shore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea and been sunk, we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800. The dry docks opposite those ships weren’t bombed and the ships are in shallow water and can be raised. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can have them repaired. Every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top of the ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply. Then Nimitz said, “That’s why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America!” “For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and He is the governor among the nations” (Psalm 22:28). “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1). “God removes kings and raises up kings; The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone He wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people…The Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses…He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’” (Daniel 2:21, 4:17, 32, 35; Isaiah 45:9). Look closely at your own life, and you’ll see God’s providential care every day!

IN MY OPINION

The Work Environment
Put the cards on the table early and clear the air up front. Make it perfectly clear that you, are the Pilot In Command.
B 26 | agairupdate.com
I get quite a bit of email from former students who just want to touch base with me or who are maybe looking for a seat. I love to hear from former students, especially those who have found an ag flying seat, and of course I inquire as to their success. Recently, I had a long conversation with a former student and first season ag pilot who told me he had flown 500+ hours, having made around $70,000. I was delighted to hear this news and told him how proud I was of him, especially considering the fact that this was his first season. Then he told me he would not be going back to his old boss. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He related his reasons in detail, which I will not go into here, but basically it was this: His boss was not a pilot, he was a farmer and he thought he was the foremost authority as to when the flying was to be done. Telling him about FAR 91.3, the law of the Pilot In Command, was like talking to a fence post. Every day was an anxiety-filled nightmare. It got to the point that it did no good to suggest that it was too windy, there was poor visibility, 200’ ceiling, bad magneto, or a Roundup job with an inversion present, susceptible crops downwind, etc. As it turned out, the pilot had a drift claim, which resulted in a major heated argument with his non-flying boss. This young man told me that he thought he had developed an ulcer and he just could not return to that environment for another season. In one of my past “In My Opinion” articles, I briefly discussed stress and some of its origins. However, I really did not specifically mention a daily, ongoing, stressful situation such as mentioned above. After listening to this young man for about 30 minutes, I could almost feel my own blood pressure going up and it took me back to 1983 when I went to Arkansas to work a rice
seat before my cotton season began in the hills of Mississippi. I was in exactly the same situation and even though it made a nice financial boost to my season, I had knots in my stomach every day of the two months I was with that operator. And so, be safe, have fun and make money.
A happy, pleasant working atmosphere makes for a safer and much more productive season for everyone. So, what is my suggestion to new ag-pilots who may find him, or herself, in a similar situation? The best thing I can think of is this: Be cautious of any ag operator who does not fly. If you think you may be in a situation like the one I’ve described here, put the cards on the table early and clear the air up front. Make it perfectly clear that you, as the Pilot In Command, will be the one to make the final decision as to whether to fly or not to fly. Make it clear that you are not trying to “run the show” and you most certainly will listen to the boss’s desires, needs, work orders, etc., but the fact of the matter is, you are the one, by law, who is the final authority whether to fly or not. This kind of daily stress and possible development of ulcers is simply not worth the money you will make, aside from the fact that your own safety is being greatly jeopardized. A happy, pleasant working atmosphere makes for a safer and much more productive season for everyone.

Passing of David Duch Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association
As many of you are aware, our good friend David Duch of Hazen passed away. Visitation will be at the Hazen Community Center at 906 East Front Street in Hazen on Wednesday, January 8th from 5 to 7 p.m. Rosary will follow. The funeral service will be Thursday, January 9th at 10 a.m. at Saint Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak, Arkansas. Our thoughts and prayers are will David’s friends and family at this time. David Lynn Duch of Hazen, Arkansas passed away peacefully on January 7, 2020 at the age of 62. He was born in Carlisle, Arkansas on June 26, 1957, the son of Richard and Charlene Duch. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronnie Duch. He spent his entire life in the Hazen area where he developed his love for agriculture and community. He was fortunate enough to find a way to serve both all his life. His love of flying started at a young age, flying solo for the first time at the age of 16. David became the manager of the Stuttgart airport at the age of 19. He was also a flight instructor, teaching countless members of his community how to fly over his lifetime. In 1978, Jerry Fisher gave David his first opportunity towards his dream of becoming a crop duster and he was forever grateful. Then in 1979, he started flying for Don Whitaker at the Hazen airport. David and his brother-in-law, Randy Booe bought the business from Don in 1980 and B&D Flying Service was born. Over the next 40 years, David operated a flying service out of the Hazen airport serving Prairie County and the surrounding areas. He was the first ag pilot in the county to have an Air Tractor, which was an airplane that eliminated the need for flaggers, and revolutionized the crop dusting industry. David was a member of the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association, serving in every office on the board of directors, including presiding as president for 2 years. He served on the safety council for FAA. Besides being an ag pilot, David was involved in a charter air service, where he served as chief pilot and director of operations. As a charter pilot, one of his most gratifying experiences was transporting

transplant organs for Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency. In his flying career, he logged over 25,000 hours. David loved the Lord and was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. He served as head of Parish Council at St. Rose Catholic Church in Carlisle, Arkansas. David served the city of Hazen for 25 years; 4 years as a city council member and 21 years as mayor.During his tenure,David oversaw many progressive improvements to the city, for example, the utility system, the community center, streets, the senior citizen’s center, walking trails through the city park and airport runway lights. David married the love of his life, Jeri Ruth Booe, in July of 1978. They were blessed with two daughters, Amber Thomas (Jason) and Cara Hollingshead (Davie). They have five grandchildren, Jalynn, Jaycee, Jace, Duke and Savannah who were adored by their Grand-daddy. David is survived by his brother ,Dwight Duch (LeaAnn) and his nephew Blake and niece Logan as well as a host of loving family and friends. David was loved by so many, as was evidenced by the multitude of people who came to visit him over the past week in the hospital. David was a generous man, most of time anonymously. Another Panicked Phone Call… Frequently, my phone rings…and the voice on the other end is a pilot who has just been at an AME office and has been deferred/denied a medical. “Doc, I’m healthy as a horse. But he/she said they can’t issue a medical!”
Ag pilots need to especially be aware of two forbidden classes…weight loss medications, and smoking cessation medications.
B 30 | agairupdate.com
As we start to dissect the situation, frequently it’s an issue of being on a medication that is on the “not allowed” list. (https://www.faa.gov/about/ office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ ame/guide/pharm/dni_dnf/) My latest caller had been given Neurontin for his back pain, and as a result of taking it, he became dizzy, and fell off a ladder. Fortunately, he had no head trauma, and as soon as he had been off the medication for a few days he had complete resolution of his symptoms. He does have to report the incident, but he cannot fly while taking the medication! (Naturally, he has sworn off the medication completely). Many medications are simply not allowed… either due to the disease they are treating (think coronary artery disease), or because of the side effects (as the Neurontin discussed above has). Many medications leave the individual feeling completely normal, but their reaction time and alertness are impaired. Muscle relaxants are especially important in this regard. Even a small change in your reaction time can be dangerous going down the field at 150 mph! Ag pilots need to especially be aware of two forbidden classes…weight loss medications, and smoking cessation medications. Both are “do not issue” drug categories! Two categories of medications are mentioned… ”do not issue”, which are medications that imply a condition in which the airman may be impaired
(angina drugs, cancer drugs) from the disease, and “do not fly” medications. The medications in the “do not fly” list can be taken, but you are not “okay to fly” until five “half-lives” of the medication have elapsed. What is a “half-life”? That is the period of time required for half of the medication to disappear from your system, either by excretion (bile, urine, bowel) or by metabolism (often in the liver). Some medications have a very long half-life… Benadryl, for example has a half-life of 12 hours… so “five half-lives” would be 60 hours after the last dose before you can safely fly. Half-lives of drugs are easily obtainable by an internet search. Sleep aids are especially tricky, as they have a widely differing half-life depending on the particular drug. (Restoril has a 72 hour waiting period!) Underlying medical disorders must be treated, despite some drugs short half-life (Flying is allowed 6 hours after use of Sonata, for example). The FAA specifically prohibits daily or frequent use, but does allow occasional use, as long as the required waiting period has been met. (see https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/ headquarters_offices/avs/offices/aam/ame/guide/ pharm/sleepaids/) Should your physician prescribe a drug, consult the links above, or call your AME! It is far easier to not take a drug, or find an alternate, than it is to deal with the “medical certificate consequences”!

FROM THE FAA
LEO M. HATTRUP, M.D.
A List at Long Last Probably the most consistent question I get when talking to airmen is, “Why isn’t there a list of approved medications from the FAA?” The answer was always that the request was actually far more difficult than most people understood. Having an approved list means having one not only for you, but also for every other pilot across all classes of medical certification as well as alternative qualifications. But that has changed.
The Challenges When evaluating a possible medication, keep in mind the two primary concerns for aeromedical fitness are subtle and sudden incapacitation.
B 34 | agairupdate.com
Several major issues have always made this holy grail of aerospace medicine a herculean task. First, every medication can have different effects on different people. Any list of approved medications would have to cover any potential impairment for any airman. In many cases, medications that seem innocuous (e.g., Diphenhydramine/Benadryl®) can have dangerous side effects. Next is the fact that no two illnesses/diseases are identical. That leads to point three: the underlying condition for which you are taking the medication could be disqualifying. These issues only scratch the surface of our required considerations. But we understand that there is a challenge for airmen as well. Ultimately, an airman is responsible for determining whether they are fit for flight under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) section 61.53. We understand that such a list is a valuable resource in making that determination.
The guide opens with a preamble that discusses factors you should know and consider when using it. First, evaluate your condition, then examine the medication for obvious warnings such as “Do not operate machinery.” Next you need to be able to determine what exactly you are taking. The document provides a guide to over the counter (OTC) drug labels that should help because you can often find the same active ingredient in many different brand names and sometimes for treating different symptoms. Prescription drugs won’t feature the standardized label, but do indicate what they are and usually a common trade name.
The Long Awaited Prize
Multiple Choice
The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) requested a list as part of an effort to educate pilots on the dangers of certain medication use while flying. Working with the GAJSC, the Office of Aerospace Medicine has produced a document to help guide pilots in making that fitness decision.
When evaluating a possible medication, keep in mind the two primary concerns for aeromedical fitness are subtle and sudden incapacitation. Will this medication degrade your performance in a way that you will be unable to detect? Will this medication cause you to lose consciousness with little or no warning? When ➤

What OTC Medications Can I Take and Still Be Safe To Fly? www.faa.gov/go/pilotmeds For example, let’s take a look at some common cough/cold medications. Most medications not labeled “PM” are usually safe for flight, but there are some exceptions. It’s important to look at all the active ingredients. Anything that contains dextromethorphan (that includes Dayquil®) is not allowed. Another common ailment is gastrointestinal illness. Medications containing bismuth subsalicylate like Pepto-Bismol® or Kaopectate ® are fine, but those containing Loperamide, like Imodium®, are not. It’s a good

idea to test out a medication prior to using it while flying in case you have an adverse reaction. It would be easy to view all of those medications as roughly equivalent, but from an aerospace medicine point of view, they are not. This is why this guide has such great potential to help airmen treat illness while staying safe. The guide is a reference, but ultimately, you are still the final authority. BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA - Based within easy sight of and about 15 miles north of the Sutter Buttes in the Sacramento Valley is one of several ag operations working rice. This particular operation AgAir Update visited was within “glide” distance to a couple other agav operations to the north, AvAg and Jones’ Flying Service. The company is known as Williams Ag Service, owned and operated by Clarence Williams. After eight years of piloting for another operator, Clarence established Williams Ag Service twenty years ago only a few miles west of the area where he grew up, Biggs and Gridley, California. Now, Williams Ag Service employees six pilots, plus Clarence, flying six Ag-Cats in the heart of California rice country, as well as a dozen-plus ground personnel during the busiest part of the season. Clarence only flies during the off-season. He is much too busy managing operations during the season to fly. “I can’t afford to come back from a load to find two turbine aircraft idling, waiting for instructions from me. It is much more cost effective to keep the aircraft in the air from the ground. This also permits me to have contact with the growers to address needs and build customer relations.” Williams Ag Service’s fleet of Ag-Cats consist
of one D-model powered by a PT6A-34 with its 500-gallon hopper; a Super B-model with its 400-gallon hopper and PT6A-15; a B-model with a PT6A-20 and Herr 330-gallon hopper; an A-model with its 330-gallon Herr hopper and two 600 horsepower radial engine A-models with their 330-gallon Herr hoppers. The Herr hoppers provide a better match to the load-carrying capabilities of the Ag-Cats for rice seeding. With the exception of the factory-built D-model, the other three turbine Ag-Cats are all Mills conversions. When asked about the two 600 radial Ag-Cats, Clarence commented, “I’ll always keep a radial engine Ag-Cat in our fleet. Not only do we use them for chasing black birds from wild rice fields, but I’ve found they are ideal for breaking in a new pilot to our way of operating. However, turbine powered aircraft have greatly improved our productivity, along with the Satloc GPS in each of them. In the past, I operated six to eight 600 Ag-Cats. Three mechanics would work all night and not be able to keep up with the maintenance due to the high time logged during our short season. Now, I use only one A&P mechanic (who works nights during the season) and he has time to spare.” Why Ag-Cats, when the majority of the industry ➤

has made the transition to mono-wing planes? “We’ve been using Ag-Cats in this area since before I started flying. As a matter of fact, Ag-Cats are all I’ve ever flown. If we ferry over two miles, we call it a crosscountry. Even when we are working remotely from a rough and unimproved strip, we are hardly out of sight of the base. Our pilots easily make 80-100 takeoffs during the day. They need an aircraft that is light on the controls and able to make lots of turns, takeoffs and landings during the day with ease.” Williams Ag Service’s main season typically begins in late April and runs through the end of July. During the rest of the year, depending on the weather, there are some orchard applications on walnuts, prunes, peaches and row crops. There are also applications of seeding, herbicides and insecticides on various winter crops such as wheat, oats, barley, alfalfa and hay crops. However, rice work makes up the vast majority of the acreage flown by Williams Ag Service. The rice work typically begins with a starter fertilization, then a pre-germinated seeding, continuing with ordram herbicide applications for water grass and maybe a blue stone fungicide application that will kill shrimp (they eat the young rice shoots) and helps control slime (algae) growing on the water. A second application of fertilizer may be needed as a top dressing. Another application will be made applying a herbicide for broadleaf weeds. One of the problems of depending on rice for an agav company’s mainstay in the Sacramento Valley is two-thirds of the work can occur in a consecutive three-week period! Pre-germinated rice seed will be brought to Williams Ag Service to be spread within hours. It is during this time that the Sacramento Valley aerial applicators are literally working like bees, flying from daylight to dark, making every attempt to complete the work on time. During this time, a working relationship among applicators, for the most part, prevails using each other’s airstrips and helping each other out. As most AgAir Update readers know, there has been a controversy in the Sacramento Valley involving the application by air of phenoxy herbicides. Off-target drift by both ground and aerial equipment, by whatever means, has caused the loss of the label for phenoxy herbicides on rice in California. Losing this family of herbicides for broadleaf control in rice plantings has been a set back, both for the applicator and the grower. Thus, in December of 1998, a California Propanil Task Force (CPTF) was formed, comprised of the
Rice Research Board, California Rice Commission, University of California scientists, ag commissioners and the propanil registrants. During this time the CPTF was led by rice grower, George Sligar, Jr. The Task Force selected propanil to determine if data could be accumulated that would prove workable buffer zones could be established for applications, thus filling the void left by the removal of the phenoxy herbicides. Four studies were agreed upon to accomplish a list of objectives including, establishing buffer zones for both aerial and ground applications, measure aerosol concentrations during large-scale, singleday applications, determine the effects of multiple applications, measure off-target movement by a ground application to a single field and establish the relationship between propanil residues found in prune leaves and residues found on artificial sampling media (prune orchards are the susceptible crop in the Butte County area, although other crops can be susceptible in other counties, i.e. cotton). The four studies were developed in conjunction with the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) of California. They developed the protocols, as well as made the test methods acceptable to DPR for future regulation changes. The tests began the second week of June 1999 with an aerial application of propanil on 1,500 acres in Butte County. Along with other local aerial applicators, Williams Ag Service participated in the tests, making the first 1,500-acre application. All participating ag aircraft were required to meet a droplet criteria. The CAAA’s DropScan test unit was used to confirm the criteria. 50% of the droplets had to be equal to or greater than 600 microns, while no more than 10% of the droplets could be less than 200 microns. All aircraft making applications in the propanil study area were tested. All applicators set up their aircraft using a 70% boom length of the wingspan. Williams Ag Service accomplished this ➤

with D10 TeeJet nozzles pointed almost straight back with no swirl plates (solid stream), applying 10-15 gallons per acre volume. Helicopters from Jones’ Flying Service and AvAg were also used in the CPTF tests. The 35,000-acre test area, the Butte County Study Zone, was only one-half mile off the Williams Ag Service base strip. The aircraft setup was conducted at its location. Through these tests, Williams Ag Service was able to apply liquid propanil on about 8,000 acres of rice. The first test mainly consisted of monitoring prune samplings, plastic leaves and “fallout” sheets downwind of the application. The second study involved setting out prune trees in five locations in the Butte County Study Zone to monitor for propanil damage. The trees were placed on “islands” one-half mile from any application. Applications were made both by ground and air around the “islands”. During a seven-week period, beginning mid-June and extending one week after the second study, compliance monitoring was conducted. This was mandated by the state of California. Compliance monitoring was not only at the study zone, but also in six other northern California rice growing counties. This information was designed to provide further data on the relationship between propanil residues on prune leaves and artificial leaves. Finally, a ground-based study was conducted after the other studies had concluded. A wide field was used with a line of prune tree saplings downwind from the applications. The trees were set as close as five feet from the edge of the field up to two miles away. Information from this study may be used to establish buffer zones for ground-based applications. A mountain of information was obtained from the summer of 1999 applications and studies. The research team is evaluating the data and assembling it for presentation to the CPTF. The CPTF will examine the data and formulate a set of conclusions
and recommendations. At this time, it seems that even more data should be gathered before making any finite conclusions about the use of propanil on rice, while protecting susceptible crops.
A mountain of information was obtained from the applications and studies. The research team is evaluating the data and assembling it for presentation to the CPTF. Williams Ag Service’s participation in the California Propanil Task Force is only one example of the company’s efforts to improve ag aviation in general, particularly in northern California. Clarence has served on the local school board for 13 years, while raising his three daughters. He realizes the distinct advantage it brings to Williams Ag Service when he has school tours at the airstrip. Without a doubt, educating the children is the next best thing to educating the parents. Clarence has been active in the CAAA for several years, moving up the ladder as secretary/ treasurer for two years and is presently serving his second term as vice president. With the hiring of a new executive director, it has required the close workings of the association officers, to what has led to in November of 1999 one of the best conventions of the association in its 50 years. Being an officer has taken a lot of time and dedication, but just like the school tours, Clarence knows in the end it is the best for Williams Ag Service, its employees, its customers and all of ag aviation.

Date: April 12, 2019 Location: Big Pine, FL Aircraft: Bell 206 Injury: none The helicopter pilot reported that, after the fourth aerial application flight of the day, he landed and positioned the helicopter near the autoloader boom truck. He reduced engine power to flight idle and the ground crew began the loading process. He verified the collective position was full down, set the cyclic friction to ON, and exited the helicopter to stretch while maintaining one hand on the cyclic. Immediately after, while standing next to the helicopter, he heard two “loud bangs.” He immediately boarded the helicopter; the ground crew secured the boom, and the pilot shut down the engine. Upon further examination by the operator’s maintenance personnel, it was determined that a main rotor blade struck the boom arm and that the main rotor blades were beyond the repair limitations, per the manufacturer’s guidance. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor blades. The director of aerial operations reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The director of aerial operations added that, at the site of the accident, the wind was 130º at 11 knots, gusting up to 19 knots. The helicopter was oriented with a southbound heading.
Date: October 18, 2019 Location: King City, CA Aircraft: Bell 47G Injury: Minor The helicopter pilot reported that, while conducting an agricultural application flight, he planned to fly over the top of the power pole. He applied full up collective to climb over the power lines, but the helicopter struggled to gain altitude. After clearing the pole, the main rotor speed got slow, the helicopter “quit flying”, and he decided to conduct a run on landing on the field. The helicopter landed hard and the main rotor blades struck the tailboom. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the tailboom. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.
