The rise of vegan wines
You might think that wine would be automatically vegan as it is derived from grapes. However, it is not always the case.
In its usual state, wine would be cloudy to look at but the world demands clear wine so fining agents are often added to improve colour, flavour, texture, clarity and stability.

as gelatine, milk, marrow, egg white and fish oil.
Is there another option?
Well, there are a number of other fining agents that are animal-friendly and are being used to make vegan wines, including carbon, bentonite clay and silica gel.
Time is also something that wine-makers can employ to achieve the same results –according to many experts simply giving a wine an extra few months will see it become less cloudy.

At Cavavin, we offer lots of vegan wines and, if you’re not sure what wine is vegan do just ask.
The most popular ones we sell are the collection from J Mourat (£12.50, and pictured above), which comes from just south of the mouth of the Loire river. This is a cool, under-ripening region which leads to a nice red berry expression. The low tannins provided by the blend of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc give us a medium-bodied crowd pleaser of a wine that works well with tomato-based pasta dishes (assuming you can find any tomatoes at the moment of course!).
The white from the same area is a very fresh and bright wine, a blend of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc that has a clean palate and is very easy drinking. Throughout the month of March we are offering a further discount on all wines using discount code DISCOUNT5 online at checkout.
Buy both of these wines at Cavavin, your local, independent wine shop. Find it at 22 Maidenhead Street, Hertford SG14 1DR. Call 01992 558311 or visit cavavin.co.uk/hertford
