A typical day in Spin’s life consists mainly of school and rodeo. Spin goes to school around 7:30am, then returns home in the afternoon, gets a snack, does his homework and rides his horses. After he finishes practicing, he spends the evening cleaning up the barn, feeding horses, and hanging out with his family. In school, Spin likes his geometry class, because he is good at working with numbers and relates that to rodeo, where numbers are important! he Texas High School Rodeo Finals are finally here! We have spent countless hours practicing, keeping our horses in tip-top shape, improving our skills, and hauling to rodeos all over the state. We are doing all of this in preparation for one week in Abilene, Texas. We are all in, everything’s on the line, and anyone can take the prize.

You may be physically ready, but are you mentally prepared? Do you have the mindset of a champion? Those how believe they are destined for greatness go out and achieve it; no matter the cost.

The bible is full of motivation and truth that you can use to fill your heart and mind with precious truths. It’s easy to get caught up in competition and lose sight of the true prize, eternal life with Jesus Christ in Heaven.

Know where you stand with the Lord, and in all that you do use it to glorify His Kingdom. Because God will bless those abundantly who commit themselves to him.

Keep your eye on the prize and trust in His immaculate plan for your life. Because with God on your side there is nothing you can’t do!

Take just as much time to mentally prepare yourself for the THSRA Finals as you do physically. Intentionally make time to pray and study scripture daily. With the mindset of a champion and the Lord, you can accomplish anything! Have a blessed week in Abilene!

I

t’s been four long, memorable years since our seniors began their journey through high school. Throughout these years, friendships and memories have been made that simply cannot be replaced. For many, these bonds began in the atmosphere of high school rodeo, spending countless numbers of weekends doing what they love most, together. All of the wins, losses, and lessons learned have been with our best friends by our side, and for a few seniors, these friendships have just begun.

One pair of senior team ropers, Sidney Stewart and Kade Cotton, are just about to begin a new chapter in their lives as they travel to South Plains College to be both roommates and team roping partners in college rodeo. They first became friends many years ago, and their friendship has only grown stronger overtime.

They have roped together, grown up together, and will now start to become grown adults all while remaining best friends. Cotton and Stewart believe that being able to start this new chapter in life with a best friend as a roping partner and roommate will definitely give them an advantage going into college.

“Having a good friend as both a partner and roommate will be good because we will always be around each other and have a good relationship both in and out of the arena,” Stewart says, “In turn, this

will help us to be an even better team.” Even after all these years, their friendship has stood the test of time, and has become an aspect of their lives so strong that they have chosen to continue their friendship with the hopes of it helping them even more in college.

Another rodeo friendship that is especially important to me is the friendship between myself and another senior, who I like to call my best friend, Ilyssa Glass. Ilyssa and I have had the opportunity to share these last four years of high Ilyssa Glass and school rodeo together, and have been there for each Brenna Hartley other through all of the crazy drama, the victories the no times, and the treasured memories that make up the sport of high school rodeo.

This next fall, we will both be attending West Texas A&M University as roommates, as well as teammates on the college rodeo team. Glass says that the best part about having a friend to continue her journey with is “always having someone to be there for you, through not only the competition, but life in general.” For me, being able to start this new journey in my life with my best friend is definitely something to look forward to, and I can’t wait to see what new and unforgettable memories we will make after high school.

No matter what struggles and successes we as high school students experience, each and every one of them is much more memorable if we are able to have a friend by our side. For some, these may be just casual friendships in which both people part ways following graduation. For others, however, the friendships that we have made throughout high school rodeo can simply not be replaced and as a result must continue. As our region rodeos have come to a close, I have come to realize that I will never see many of these people again, but I think I can speak for many of the seniors when I say that I am so grateful to have made a friend that I will continue my journey with, even after this page in the book is finished.

PERFORMANCE REPORT Region III Wrap Up

W

ith our THSRA State Finals quickly approaching in June, Region III is proud to say that we have a tough group of contestants heading to Abilene to represent us! As usual, we had an action packed Region Finals at the end of March! There was a lot of tough competition, and at the end of the weekend, we got to see the "cream of the crop" rise to the top!

With that being said, here's our Year End Champions in each event from Region III, as well as a few names to be on the lookout for in Abilene!

In the Team Roping, senior Chase Chambers, and his partner, Andrew Hill, walked away as the 2015 Region III champs by 9 points. In the Steer Wrestling, Brett Stuart was crowned our champion, and with only being

a sophomore, we plan on seeing him continue to dominate in the future! In the speed event of Pole Bending, we had a little bit of a tight race at our Region Finals, with only 10 points separating our top 5 girls, but in the end, Annie Herring walked away as our number one cowgirl! In the goat tying, well it's safe to say that Katie Stewart dominated this year! She finished out our Region Finals not only in the number one spot, but by 11 points over second place, and as the only girl to gain over 100 points katie stewart in that event for the year end! In the Barrel Racing, senior Megan Meadows was crowned our Region Champion, winning the event by 10 points! In the Saddle Bronc, Brody Yeary, another one of our seniors, also dominated his event this year by finishing up with a 12 point lead, and 115.5 points for the year end! Region III definitely had some contestants show interest in the new Reigning Cow Horse event, with cheyenne britain 6 contestants competing in it all year! Nolan Self was crowned our champion, and will be representing us alongside our 5 other contestants in Abilene! In the Girls Cutting, senior Eva Blanton was our year end champion by 22 points! In the Boys Cutting, Kutter Burnett also walked away as our champion by 22 points!

For the Calf Roping, Hagen Houck was crowned the year end champion by 19 points. In the Breakaway Roping, Skylar Southerland put the heat on the rest of the pack at our Region Finals, and walked away as the Region Finals champion, as well as the year end champion! In the Bareback, Clint Mayo was crowned our year end champion and will be representing us well in Abilene! For the Bull Riding, Brody Yeary came out on top yet again, winning the event by 12 points!

It's clear to see why Brody was also crowned our 2015 Region III All-Around Cowboy! Our All-Around Cowgirl saddle went to Cheyenne Britain, who qualified to Abilene in 4 events, and was one of only 3 girls to qualify to State in the Team Roping from Region III! I would like to personally congratulate each and every one of you on your qualification to the State Finals in Abilene! There's a reason Region III claims to be, and is called by other regions, the toughest in the state of Texas! It is an accomplishment of its own to qualify to our Region Finals, much less move on to represent us in Abilene! So good luck to each of you, and I look forward to seeing and competing with all of you from Region III, as well as the rest of the state in June!

PERFORMANCE REPORT What a great year it was in Region IV!

F

irst off, congratulations to all of our state qualifiers this year. All of the hours of work you've put in this year have paid off with a trip to Abilene, and we wish you the best!

It's a busy time of year for rodeo athletes young and old, and as we move forward towards state finals and look ahead to the 2015-2016 season, we may also pause to look back and reflect on this past year's accomplishments throughout the rodeo season.

Friendships were formed, goals were met, and memories that will last a lifetime were made.

There were a lot of good things that happened this year, and some bad things too, but it's important not to let those bad things get to you. A very wise man once said that, "Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm." It's something that I think of often, because that's what the sport of rodeo can be for us all at times. No rodeo season

is as perfect as we would like it to be, period. Bad days happen over a whole season, but it's important to never lose your enthusiasm to show up and succeed at the next rodeo, because it only takes one run to snap a losing streak. Everyone makes mistakes; it's in how well you handle those mistakes and move on from them that show the kind of person you are. Basically, you should never trip over something that's already behind you. Use your mistakes as stepping stones for next year, and keep moving forwards towards the goals you set for yourself.

And lastly, to our seniors, congratulations. From the first wide-eyed trip to Terrell, to your final senior ride in the arena in Athens, you have all made it to the end of the 4-year journey that is 'High School Rodeo'.

It's always a bittersweet end, but big opportunities await all of you. We wish you success in all your future plans, and you will all be greatly missed.

PERFORMANCE REPORT REGION V – CROWNING CHAMPIONS AND SALUTING SENIORS!!!

A

s our Seniors experience the realization that their high school rodeo careers are quickly coming to an end Region V put another finals on the books. With the average points deciding numerous championships that weekend in Marshall, many cowgirls and cowboys competed with their hopes and dreams of a new saddle, buckle, or the chance to compete at State depending on those precious points. The confidence of coming into the finals winning your event can quickly turn sour with one five second penalty, broken barrier, or the signal of the flagman that your goat or calf had gotten up. As competitors we each handle pressure differently, but I can honestly tell you that Region V members thrive on this pressure, it tends to bring out their best. Competing in Region V, I have come to know fierce competition, but also friendship and mentoring from some awesome cowboys and cowgirls that I am blessed to call

friends. These athletes and their families congratulate you on a winning run and console you when things just don’t go your way, loan you their best horse, and encourage and support you in and out of the arena, because that’s what rodeo families do, they embrace the competitive spirit of our sport and build relationships that last a lifetime.

Gonzales, Green DeWitt's frontier settlement, holds a unique place in Texas history as the site of the firing of the first shot for Texas independence on October 2, 1835. Eighteen townsmen, forever linked with heroes of the revolution, stood on the bank of the Guadalupe River and refused to give up their small cannon to the Mexican Army, while the women hurriedly fashioned a flag holding a black replica of the cannon on a white background, emblazoned with the words that would echo through the years: Come & Take It. In 1836 Gonzales further carved out its niche in history when 32 of her men rode to martyrdom at the Alamo in answer to William Barrett Travis's poignant call for help against overwhelming odds.

It was to Gonzales that survivors of this

battle came, bringing General Sam Houston the news of the garrison's fall.

It was here that the Runaway Scrape began, when Houston, who was training his troops here, ordered the town burned and began his retreat to San Jacinto. It was here that the soldiers returned, determined to rebuild their town and continue their dreams of a better life in a new land for their families.

These 49 original blocks and the seven public squares that form a Greek cross saw ranchers and cattle drovers, cotton farmers and bankers follow the returning settlers. All joined together to forge a better, stronger Gonzales, building plantation homes, cottages and Victorian mansions, along with the courthouse, stores, churches, schools and public buildings that would withstand the test of time in a place that became known as "The Birthplace of Texas Freedom" and "The Gateway to Texas History."

3 Annual TJHRA Parent/Member Ribbon Roping Sponsored by Jennings Photography & JJ Rodeo Company When: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 1:00pm (teams will pay entry fees at arena starting at 12:45 – announcer stand) Where: Rodeo Arena Who: State Qualifiers and a parent or guardian. Entries should be turned in to the Rodeo Office (in Gonzales) and 50 teams will be randomly drawn to compete How: A qualified state finals contestant and a parent or guardian can enter the parent/member ribbon roping. The team must be a coed team with the contestant roping and parent/guardian running. Entries will be taken in the Rodeo Office until 7:00 pm Sunday night (May 24th ). 50 random teams will be drawn and posted in the rodeo office at 9:am Monday morning (May 25th). The 50 teams who have been drawn will pay their entry fees at the arena starting at 12:45pm on Wednesday, May 27th. Fees must be paid to compete.

Cost per team is $30.00 . Entry fees will be paid at the jackpot arena. Jackpot will be donated to the scholarship fund for the Junior High.

Ropers will receive custom headstalls for Grand and Reserve Champion ropers.

Runners will receive custom belt buckles for Grand and Reserve Champion runners.

hope everyone is getting as excited as I am about the finals! It is hard to believe it is almost here! This next month will be a very busy one for me and I know it will be for you too…..but don’t get to busy to keep practicing so you will be on top of your game when you get the finals. We want you to be ready to obtain your goal and go to Des Moines, IA with us at the end of June. Of course, keep your grades up too…..we know many of you will be missing your last week of school so sure don’t want you to have to worry about not finishing your grades out as good as you can.

Now for some serious business…..if you don’t read anything but this I will be so happy!

CONTESTANT’S YOU MUST BE CHECKED INTO THE OFFICE ON SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 BY 1PM!!! If you break down, please call my cell 979-412-2551! Please do not push this time, it is mandatory and a very serious deadline. If for some reason something does happen in your travels……….CALL 979-412-2551. I hate to even bring this up, but there has been contestants sent home because they were late.

Also, don’t forget your grades! This is a must!!! A final report card or your last 6 weeks report card will work. Everyone must show a copy of a current coggins paper at the gate and if you are crossing the state lines, you will need health papers.

We are excited to finally have something for the barrel and pole benders….we are announcing that we will have two jackpots for the Barrel and Pole Benders on Saturday and Sunday night and will offer exhibition runs to first 100 on Monday – Thursday. They will all be ran on different stakes. The shooting contest will kick off on Saturday morning, the draw will be available before the finals so be watching for that. Also, we will be having a Member/Parent ribbon roping on Wednesday, May 27, you will enter when you get to Gonzales….so parents start practicing your running.

We will again be showing the performances live on the internet on our own website this year www.tjhra.org This might be fun to let your teachers know and they can watch you while you compete. I still have some spots to sell on the web broadcast if you are interested but the last day will be May 15.

Region 7 had a fun filled year!

ach year it seems like as soon as we get started good we are done!

Everyone is getting excited about attending the TJHRA state finals in Gonzales. Many of our members are polishing up their rodeo skills by attending spring associations. From watching some of the competition it is getting pretty tough.

At the end of the season for Region 7 our All Around Cowgirl was Makenna Shook, she is also our current TJHRA State Secretary, she is headed to state in five events, be watching out for her in all of them and especially the girls goat tying. I have seen some pretty wicked goat times lately. If all goes well for her at the finals she should be looking good.

Our All Around Cowboy was Kreese Milligan, Kreese came to TJRHA from New Mexico this year. His family moved to Texas and boy did he come with the talent! He is on the Cinch team for New Mexico but now participating in Texas. We welcome him to the TJHRA state finals, he will be prepared to help Texas for an outstanding cowboy.

Our Rookie Cowgirl is Aspen Miller, she started the year out really good and followed it through the whole season. Aspen had a pretty hard

year in losing two of her competition horses to unrelated things. But I can say Aspen never gave up and continued her quest to come out on top. Michael Stansbury was our Rookie Cowboy this year in Region 7.

Michael is one of those contestants you love see pull up. Not only is he great in the arena but willing to help with anything he is asked to do. In fact this year he was awarded with a pocket knife for being the Top Hand at the Region 7 rodeos. I am sure during the state finals many will get to know him around the arena.

As far as our event champions for the year, they are as follows: Carli Rawlinson in barrels, Slade Wood in boys breakaway, Carsyn Sunvision in boys goat tying, Kade Bigee in chute dogging, Robbin Rice in girls breakaway, Makenna Shook in girls goat tying, Carli Rawlinson in pole bending, Tanner Tomlinson in ribbon roping and team roping, Aspen Miller in ribbon running, Bryce Belknap in team roping and Shayne Krolczyk in tiedown roping.

Region 7 is strong in all the events this year, so be watching for these champions as they go for it all in Gonzales in May! See you all soon‌..

Region VIII Rodeo Season Comes to an End

T

he 2014-2015 Region VIII rodeo season has officially come to an end. Another great year together went by so quickly with many memories made and friendships gained that will last a lifetime. We experienced moments of adversity, growth and triumphs! The time has come that we have been working for all year and I’m as excited as everyone else for our journey to state finals.

We had some exciting times at Region 8 this year and had some fun too raising money for our awards ceremony. We organized and participated in events of Silent Auctions, Team Roping, Goat Roping and a Parent Rodeo which our Dads earned money competing in Barrels, Poles and Goat Tying! Thanks to all our parents, sponsors, and region officers for helping us have a successful and enjoyable rodeo season.

Contestants that have qualified for Top 10 in events will be going to Gonzales for State Finals and received some really nice awards which included saddles, buckles, and tack!

Our All Around Cowgirl, Jordynn January, worked hard all year to achieve this goal. She is also our Girls Goat Tying and Breakaway Champion.

This accomplishment showed me how far practice and persistence can get you.” She is preparing for state by going to jordynn January some clinics and practic& fisher underbrink ing hard. Our All Around Cowboy, is Fisher Underbrink and he is also the Boys Goat Tying and Chute Dogging Champion. “It means a lot to me to finally get results out of all the practice I put into the sport of rodeo. I give all glory to God” Fisher said he is preparing for state by practicing to get repetition and muscle memory so he doesn’t have to think when the pressure is on. Our Rookie Cowgirl is Kate McNeill and the Rookie Cowboy is Braedon Weaver.

Our other event champions include: Maile Sciba in Barrel Racing; Emma Smith in Pole Bending; Coleman King in Tie Down Roping; Cash Fretwell in Boys Breakaway Roping; Riley Hausler in Bull Riding and Bareback; Cotton Loya in Saddle Bronc; Juan Rodriguez and Alejandro Gonzalez in Team Roping; and Hunter Underbrink and Mackenzie Bryce in Ribbon Roping. Hunter and Mackenzie said it means a lot to win ribbons since both being 8th graders, it’s their last year to compete in ribbons. “It was kate Mcneill an honor to have such a great partner” said Mackenzie. She said she is preparing for state by running at home and running ribbons in TYRA. Hunter and Mackenzie are planning to compete together at TYRA in May to get some practice in together before state.

With it being the end of our season, we must say goodbye to our 8th grade contestants. We will miss them and wish them success in their journey to High School Rodeo. They are Britney Blaha, Chris Blaha, Mackenzie Bryce, Cash Fretwell, Stephanie Garza, Riley Hausler, Coleman King, Cotton Loya, Mason Narvaez, Juan Rodriguez, Hunter Underbrink, Fisher Underbrink, Isabelle Valdez, and Miles Williams.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Gonzales. Good Luck to all of our event champions. Practice hard, stay determined and aim high.

hat does rodeo mean to you?

Winning, money, or friends and family? Well to region 6 it means friends and family. Region 6 is one big family and we cherish all the memories and moments we share with each other. It's just something about rodeo that bring the rodeo families closer together at every rodeo. At rodeos, families are the most important thing. They are the ones that bring you up when your feeling down or cheer you on when you're at your best. They

become your biggest fan.

Families are about being there to support each other. They are the ones that push you to do your best even when you feel like you can't. They are also the ones that tell you to keep going when you feel like quitting.

But more importantly, they are the ones that pay your fees, drive you to those late night rodeos, and make sure you have everything you need for your rodeo. We never truly realize how lucky and blessed we really are to live this rodeo life. They can never be thanked enough for the little things they do. When breaking it down and thinking about all they do, you start to think about how much your family really means to you.

We can't forget about our friends. As we go through our rodeo journey we make friends that become family. These friends become our rodeo brothers and sisters.

We go to them with advice about their bad runs or their great runs. They are the ones that you first tell you good job or get‘em next time!

So next time your at a rodeo, be sure to tell your parents, your rodeo families, and friends thank you for all you do. Make sure you let them know how important they are to you. These people are the ones we share our rodeo memories and rodeo moments with.

ost of us know that rodeo was not originally a sporting event, but a crucial part of cattle ranching. However, I thought it would be interesting to see how much each of us actually knew about rodeo and its history.

A lot of us know that rodeo grew out of practices of Spanish ranchers and their Mexican ranch hands or vaqueros. Also many of us know that there would be no steer wrestling at all in American rodeo were it not for Bill Pickett.

However, I did some research and found some things that most of us probably never knew…

• There was an Act to Regulate Rodeo April 3, 1857 where every owner of a stock farm were able to host a yearly rodeo for the purpose of separating their respective cattle • William F Cody (Buffalo Bill) created the first major rodeo and the first Wild West show in Nebraska in 1882 • Cheyenne Frontier Days began in 1897 • Women joined the Wild West show and contest rodeo circuits in 1890 • The first woman bulldogger appeared in 1913 • In 1919 roper Guy Weadick created the Calgary Stampede and he selected events, determined rules and chose officials • WWI nearly killed rodeo until Tex Austin created the Madison Square Garden Rodeo in 1922

• William T Johnson took over the Garden where he began producing rodeos in indoor arenas which forever changed the nature of the sport • In 1929 Bonnie McCarroll died as a result of a bronc riding accident in Pendleton, Oregon; her death caused many rodeos to drop women contests • if not for McCarroll’s tragedy the rest of rodeo history might be different. It is unlikely that there would ever have been a need for WPRA and barrel racing would probably never existed • William T Johnson ignored the Rodeo Association of America (RRA) and continued to include women events at rodeos • Cowboys hated Johnson for unfairly distributing prize money so they forced him to give up and the eager cowboys formed the Cowboy Turtle Association (CTA) which is now the powerful PRCA • Like the RAA, the CTA sanctioned no women events • In 1931 promoters of the Stamford Cowboy Reunion invited all local ranches to send a young woman to compete in a sponsor contest designed to add femininity to the all-male rodeo, women were judged on who had the best horse, most attractive outfit and on horsemanship as they rodeo a cloverleaf pattern • By 1934 the typical William T Johnson rodeo featured 16 events, 6 of which were contests; cowboy bareback and saddle bronc, cowgirl bronc riding, cowboy steer riding, steer wrestling, and calf roping • The first night rodeo was held in Preston, Idaho in 1934 • In 1940 the Cowboys Amateur Association (CAA) was formed in California to allow amateurs to gain experience before entering into Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) in which members were required to move after reaching $500 • The word rodeo was officially adopted in 1945 • 1945 the Cowboy Turtle Association changed to Rodeo Cowboy Association which later in 1975 changed to the PRCA • The WPRA was created in 1948 • in 1949 the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association was formed • NFR began in 1959 the total purse was $50,000, today the figure is $5,375,000 tillie baldwin • In 1961 rodeo branched out and formed the National High School Rodeo Association • Barrel racing was added to the NFR in 1968 • In 1976 Tom Ferguson became the first cowboy to exceed $100,000 winnings in a single year • in 1992 the PBR was formed From there forward is rodeo as we know it.

So how much did you really know about rodeo?

egion 8 has many members who have started their professional rodeo career with Texas High School Rodeo Association; including Hailey Kinsel and Cord Crowell. These are just two of the many who have made it big in rodeo.

Hailey and Cord both competed all 4 years at THSRA region 8 High School Rodeo making it to state in multiple events.

Hailey Kinsel was truly the all-around cowgirl of THSRA region 8 and TJHRA Region 8.

Hailey competed in breakaway, goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending and Cutting. Hailey made it to state 2 years in junior high, and all 4 years in high school, also her senior year she qualified in all 5 events. Hailey won her first saddle ever at region 8 in the pole bending her freshman year and she still rides that saddle till this day! Hailey won the region in pole bending and was the rookie champion in 2010. She won the barrels in 2011 and 2012, won goat tying in 2013 and also won all- around champion in both 2011 and 2013. She was the reserve all-around champion in 2010 and 2012. Hailey also won state in barrels, which qualified her for the Nationals in 2011 and made it to nationals again her senior year in breakaway. Hailey served our region for 3 years straight; reporter in 2011, vice president in 2012 and president in 2013. On top of all that Hailey

also served as our state officer for 2 years; secretary in 2012 and president in 2013. With all of these achievements Hailey still managed to graduate with a 4.0 grade point average!

After Hailey graduated in 2013 she continued her education to A&M College Station where she is studying Agriculture Economics. Also she is competing on the A&M rodeo team. As a sophomore Hailey has unofficially won the NIRA Southern Barrel Racing Championship with one rodeo left and the way the points add up she is so far ahead no one will be able to catch her. She says “It has been an awesome experience and the barrel horses in this region are as tough as they come. Very tough competition!” She will be headed up to her first College National Finals Rodeo in June cord with george strait as a sophomore! I asked Hailey how region 8 helped her become so successful and she replied “It's helped me with school - taught me how to set goals & work towards them. I have long term goals of graduating college, short term goals for each semester, & even shorter goals that are daily. Rodeo - my mental game, attitude, & overall skill level improved the most through junior high & high school rodeo. I learned how to be fully prepared for each run so that I don't feel pressure & can just concentrate on my job. It also gave me a place to season my horses, which has helped me become a better trainer & rider. Friends - almost everyone I know now at the college or amateur rodeos, I know from high school rodeo! All of my high school rodeo friends are still my closest friends. Also, it helps to know a lot of people when you're traveling if you have road trouble, or need a guy friend to push a calf, etc. friends are a big help!! Contacts - the adults, directors, & companies I worked with through being a state officer have helped me a lot - whether I needed a recommendation letter for college, potential job offers, or just someone to call for advice. I have met & became very close to many people who have been very influential in my life so far & I believe will be in my professional career.” Hailey is such a big inspiration to all young competitors with how well she does and how humble she is in her winnings. From a personal stand point I have always looked up to Hailey since I was a kid! Region 8 can truly help a person reach their goals.

Another good example of a person achieving their life long dreams of making it big in the rodeo circuit is Cord Crowell. Cord was a member of both junior high and high school region 8, making it to state 2 years in junior high and 4 years in high school competing in breakaway, tie down, ribbons and team roping.

Cord was always in the back helping push calves and tie breakaway strings. After Cord graduated in 2007 he attended college in A&M college station and competed in the college rodeo for the first semester. Also he competed in CPRA, UPRA, Lester Meir and PRCA rodeos. Cord won the year end in the team roping in the Lester Meir rodeos. He also finished 4th in the CPRA standings heading. Recently Cord achieved his lifelong dream of winning 2nd at the George Strait team roping winning a brand new trophy saddle and $54,530.00 dollars! When I asked him how region 8 helped him become successful in his adult career his response was, “I believe high school rodeo helped me because it’s a starting place on learning how to win. How to control your nerves when you are under pressure. To me that is a big component to rodeo is knowing how to control your emotions and take care of business.” Cord can testify that competing in region 8 has really helped him and will help anyone when they want to compete in rodeo in their adult life even after college.

Participating in rodeo not only strengthens your riding abilities it also strengthens your work habits and social skills that can help a person in their later years. Like I said previously, there are many other former members of THSRA Region 8 that have gone on and become very successful in and out of the rodeo arena.

There just is not enough room to highlight all of them! So if you are considering a sport to enhance your childs life, Rodeing with THSRA is an amazing opportunity and organization!

t seem's that after the new year all you can think about (even if it's months away), is FINALS. There's many different contexts of FINALS that run through our heads, almost as fast as a Dash Ta Fame colt. FINALS for school, FINAL game's, FINALS for many youth rodeo associations, and last but not least FINALS for your THSRA Region. Region IX got to celebrate and round out a amazing year at our FINALS in Crockett last month.

Ok ok, enough 'Caps' I believe. But seriously, in all four of my years in Region IX, even with a disastrous situation, I'd have to say this was the best finals by far!!! You're probably thinking what disastrous situation happened?? Well a couple weeks before this magnificent finals, a tragedy struck our amazing region director, Eddie Dyson.

His barn/office containing all of his work related things as well as all region information, burned down. All awards such as saddles and tack were inside and burned as well. Only one saddle was salvageable. This

hit the Dyson family extremely hard. Not only was our region records and awards gone, but irriplacable things such as their company records and computers as well. On top of all this, the insuarence was not going to cover very much at all on the saddles and various tack. It was very emotional trying to recap this to the family and friends at our banquet that night. But because Region IX is a family that sticks together, we ended up with our auction of just 3 items raising $7,500!! It was absolutely incredible to see a huge group of people come together for the Dyson's and us kids. Mrs. Kelly Kaminski also set up a go fund me account which raised $4,500 dollars as well!!

On behalf of the kids in Region IX I just would like to thank everyone who donated or helped out in anyway. Y'all are truly a blessing.

On a lighter note, even though it was raining and I can guarentee you every pair of pants was brown, we had a great our amazing secretary, time enjoying our seniors last High School Rodeo ever! kim ackel, being silly Our winners for each event for the DAY were: Breakaway- Ashely Castleberry Goat Tying- Hailey Bruining Bareback- Dillon Baize Barrel Racing- Kelsie Winfrey Bull Riding- Tristan Mize Pole Bending- Jake Hughes Saddle Bronc- Colby Winfrey Steer Wrestling- Kayne Partin Team Roping- Colton Currie & Blake Johnson Tie Down- Colton Dowell Each event winner recieved a goregous Tres Rio's buckle!

I want to think about the future though, and the future is looking BRIGHT for us as a region at State! So watch out Abilene, 'The oh so fine Region 9' is coming for you.

Their lives tell us what faith means. So we, too, should run the race that is before us and never quit. We should remove from our lives anything that would slow us down and the sin that so often makes us fall.

Here in region X our officials and family serve to set a remarkable example to those all around.

We are beyond greatful for the work and time every body has put in to make our rodeos a success.

We want to especially recognize our President Jerry Wright and our Vice President Brian Dunn who always take the contestants greater interest to heart when making decisions. Thank you to Vanessa Halford, who announces every rodeo and helps to make things go smoothly. Not only is Vanessa our announcer but she is a State board member along with Jamie McDougal and Joseph "Porkchop" Thomas. Region X

could not be more thankful and blessed to have Angela Cudd as our secretary for all of our needs! She does a remarkable job of doing her job the best she can. Not only do these members make our rodeos all that they are, but each and every one of the parents volunteering and helping out share the responsibility of the success of our region. To all those contestants out there, thank your parents. We have a great group of supporters in and out of the arena. Many have been fortunate enough to not only be able to rely on their parents, but know they always have back up if anything is needed. In our monthly Farm & Ranch Family Spotlight, we’ll feature one family, sharing their story of how they work together as a family to make their farm or ranch successful. The Philips Family of Region IX C

ongratulations to McCoy’s Farm and Ranch family of the month, the Philips’ family from Region 9! Jason, Carol, Paige, a THSRA Region 9 member, Ben and Audree Philips run the RLR Cattle ranch, which is a cow-calf operation that focuses on embryo weaned calf program located in Madisonville, Texas.

The RLR Cattle ranch has been in the family since Paige’s great grandfather, Ray Reding, started the cattle operation in 1941. “We later started the embryo transfer business in 1997.”

The Philips family runs their ranch on a mix of owned and leased land and run anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400 head of cattle.

We all know the ranching lifestyle takes a lot of work and requires a lot of hard labor. We also know it definitely takes a group effort in order to keep things running smoothly. The Philips family has definitely grasped this concept as the kids in the family, Paige, Ben and Audree, began helping out on the

ranch when they each hit the early age of three years old helping pen cattle! “As they have grown older, they have helped with getting semen ready for their dad to artificially breed the donor cows, and do whatever else is necessary to help with the day-to-day operations of our family business.” Other daily tasks on the ranch include, tagging, paige philips working, checking and feeding the cattle.

During breeding season, times get extremely busy forcing the family to divide and conquer. “Carol does the bookkeeping for the family, keeping up with records of clients’ cattle and our own cattle. Jason does the artificial insemination process with clients’ cattle, tags calves once they are born, and manages donors (client’s cattle), Tracy Williamson, Paige’s uncle, checks heat on recipient cattle, and feeds cattle, and Ray Lee Reding, Paige’s grandpa, attends three paige philips cattle sales a week buying replacement recipient cattle and stocker calves. Him and the kids also help wherever they are needed.” Though the ranching lifestyle can take a lot of time and hard work they take pride in the family oriented lifestyle they partake in. They are also proud of the fact that commercialization does not affect their family business. “Our thought on it [commercialization] is, we are a family owned and operated business and take pride in being able to make our own decisions pertaining to our business.”

They are honored to be McCoy’s Farm and Ranch family of the month and shop there for all of their fencing and barn material needs. When asked what it meant to be selected as McCoy’s Ranch family of the month, Paige replied, “As a senior, it is a great honor to receive the McCoy’s ranch family award. I joined the Texas Junior High Association and have been a member ever since. We enjoy reading about the other families each month and feel very privileged to have been selected for the award.”

Good luck to Paige on her final semester as a THSRA member and a big congratulations to the Philips family!
