A Message from the DDPR

Greetings Brothers of the Talented Tenth District,

First, I would like to thank the brotherhood for the overwhelming support for my candidacy for the Director of Public Relations office. As it was successful, I know for it to be true that the contributions, phone calls, conversations, and prayers on my behalf had a direct impact on this outcome. Again, I sincerely thank you. I am at your service. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Bro. Fred Saffold for the outstanding work he did in this office as the standard of excellence was continued and surpassed its previous marks as the work was completed with blood, sweat, and tears. Your legacy in this work will continue to live on through the work of this office.

Speaking of standards of service, this office is one of utmost importance and the contributions to the executive council and service to the district are immeasurable. District Representative, Bro. Sean T. Long, our 38th Tenth District Representative, who’s mantra is “Be the Change” has set this council to do just that. This office serves as a vital role as we are connecting the dots and utilizing the skill sets and abilities of the brotherhood to create effective change in the community at the international, district, and local chapter level.

In maintaining those standards and Being the Change, this issue of the Quemmunicator highlights the 85th District Convention, and chapter activities. The Quemmunicator’s purpose is to highlight the fraternity and the brotherhood, and this work requires those who are willing to serve to bring the information to light. We are in the process of adding more brothers to our team, and are looking for graphic designers, social media content creators, and article editors. If you are interested, please contact me at 10thDistrictDPR@oppf.org. We will continue to highlight the dynamic work of the brothers of the Talented Tenth District.

Again, I thank you for your continued support and I am always at your service.

In service to Omega, Bro. Michael Durrett Sr.

DOUBLE IMPACT: IOTA CHAPTER PROVIDES SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO BLACK STUDENTS IN CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOODS!

On Thursday, August 18, 2022, and Thursday, August 25, 2022, Iota Chapter put their money where their hearts are by supporting black students in Chicago’s Roseland (Cullen Elementary) and Auburn Gresham (Oglesby Elementary) neighborhoods respectively by providing students with school bags stuffed with school supplies, personalized words of encouragement, a commemorative $2 bill to remind them of their unique capabilities of being scholars, and a much needed assortment school necessities. Cullen Elementary is a neighborhood school with a strong emphasis on language arts, math, and technology. Cullen is located in the far southside Roseland community in Chicago. Richard J. Oglesby Elementary is a dual program neighborhood school which means they have traditional and Montessori learning paths. Oglesby is located in the black community of Auburn Gresham on Chicago’s southside.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has somewhat subsided, its influence is obviously still affecting both schools, students, and families. Mrs. Covington (Oglesby teacher) stated, “Many of the parents didn’t know what they were going to do to get school supplies for their children, but the Ques came through as always!” Cullen Asst. Principal Arthurine Beaugard, Counselor Rachel Lampley, and Math Teacher Joyce Davis collectively expressed, “We knew we could count on Omega again!”

The following Omega men not only were on hand to deliver the school supplies, but took time to intentionally meet and share advice with the students and parents: Bros. Andre Garner, Rick Williams, Eddie Morrow, Jeff McKamey, Melvin M. Slater (Scholarship Chairman), Sr., Bas. Socrates Mabry (Basileus), Kam Buckner, Jeff McKamey, Dr. Leverette Bryant, Jamaal Applewhite, Lee Jones, Charles Rowan, and Dr. Melvin Hargrett, EdD. One parent could be overheard telling her son, “You’re going to grow up to be one of them!”

HOW GOOD AND HOW PLEASANT IT IS, FOR BROTHERS TO DWELL TOGETHER IN UNITY

This has been a year full of impact and service for the brothers of NuPi Chapter. As we move forward growing the chapter, we continue to provide service to the Joliet, IL community through scholarships, events, and fellowship. Several of those events are the Annual Floyd Eskridge & Dr. Charles Kennedy Scholarship Awards, Golf Classic, and Back to School Supply Drive. The brothers of NuPi chapter stands on the service it can provide for our community. This fiscal year, we provided 8 scholarships to high school and college undergraduates to a total of $11,000. Seven of the recipients received $1500, and one recipient received a $500 scholarship. These scholarships are instrumental in helping future graduates continue their education to follow their dreams. Thank you to the scholarship committee, and the leadership of Bro. Kevin Thomas.

NU PI CONT .

In September, one of the many initiatives that helps raise financial resources for the scholarship committee is the Annual Floyd Eskridge & Dr. Charles Kennedy Golf Classic. This years golf outing raised over $3,000 dollars as we hosted 50 golfers at Silver Lake Golf Course, in Orland Park, IL. After the 18 holes, we celebrated with an awards dinner. Thank you to all of the brothers that came far and wide to support this scholarship initiative. Thank you to Bro. Mark Davis and Bro. Jabari Saunders for their leadership in this year’s annual golf classic.

Brothers also saw the opportunity to host a Back to School Supply Drive for the students of Carl Sandburg Elementary school. The school supply drive that was spearheaded by Bro. Adewale Langston helped provide 300 students with schools supplies to start the school year. This act of service was recognized by the principal who appreciates the continued partnership with NuPi Chapter. The brothers of NuPi Chapter conducted business by running its election for the 20222023 council via electronic voting via zoom. The first time an election was held electronically with the chapter. Positions for the following year are as follows: Bro. Jerome Nesbary, Basileus; Bro. De’Ante Howard, Vice Basileus; Bro Jabari Saunders, Keeper of Records and Seals; Bro. Thomas Agnew, Keeper of Finance; and Bro. Northern Denson, Keeper of Peace. These brothers will lead the chapter in the upcoming fiscal year. We are looking forward to the year ahead, as we plan to begin the new year by hosting our Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. NuPi Chapter Founders Day Banquet, taking place November 12, 2022.

THETA XI

FEED MY SHEEP

In Matthew 25:34, Jesus said, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. Taking heed to the scriptures, the brothers of Theta Xi volun teered at Midwest Food Bank. This endeavor allowed us to pack can goods in boxes for the less fortunate.

On May 31st and August 16th, the brothers of the Theta Xi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., volunteered at the Midwest Food Bank in Peoria. Illinois. Midwest Food Bank currently dis tributes nearly $36 million dollars’ worth of food to over 2,050 non-profits each month. Midwest Food Bank stands ready for disaster relief efforts and can get food-filled relief boxes to those in need, within 24 hours. Through the valuable volunteer work of the brothers of Theta Xi and most importantly, the blessings of God, Midwest Food Bank now shares these blessings worldwide. In 2021, Midwest Food Bank distributed over $430 million dollars’ worth of food.

Hunger and poverty often go hand in hand, but poverty is not the ultimate determinant of food insecurity. People living above the poverty line are often at risk of hunger, as well. Research demonstrates that unemployment, rather than poverty, is a better predictor of food insecurity among people living in the United States. The Black community consistently faces hunger at higher rates than other ethnic communities due to social, economic, and environmental chal lenges. In 2021, nearly 20% of Black individuals experienced food insecurity - more than three times the rate of other households. In both good and bad economic times, Black and Hispanic families consistently experience crisis-level rates of poverty and food insecurity, especially when compared with their ethnic counterparts.

PAGE 20 TENTH D

The brothers of Theta Xi value the role that volunteering plays at Midwest Food Bank, enabling them to achieve incredible goals of dismantling food insecurity in needing families. This endeavor will prepare them for contin ued, successful service that will be required of them worldwide as demand continues to increase. Fighting food insecurity requires continuous growth and collaboration. Midwest Food Bank and the Theta Xi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., stands ready for the journey. We desperately want to live in a world where the work to end hunger is no longer needed or where the concept of hunger is foreign and a thing of the past. Until that day comes, with enthusiasm, the brothers of Theta Xi will stay in the fight with Midwest Food Bank to eliminate hunger.

The Theta Xi chapter would like to thank Brothers LaColis Reed, Jerry Harris, Alando Burnside, Antwon Dussett, Andy Hendrix, Keith King, John Clayborne, Shawon Harrison, Shawn Allen and Karstin Howard for their time and service.
