REMEMBERING PULSE BY: CHRIS GONZALEZ

I remember the morning of June 12th as if it was yesterday. The shock, fear, panic, and absolute terror that I experienced as a resident and bartender in the Orlando community not only shakes me to this day, but will forever be engrained in me. You don’t know the feeling until you experience it, but I pray that you don’t.

I felt a nudge from my boyfriend waking me up and heard our phones going off more and more on the morning of June 12th, 2016. I found out about Pulse the same way I found out about 9/11 when I was a child; waking up to the news that there had been a mass shooting and many were believed to be dead. I began watching the TV and noticed the background: “that’s the repair shop on the corner… that’s the Wendy’s down the street… that looks like my Dunkin Donuts…” Sure enough, as the scene began to unfold I saw the now infamous Pulse Nightclub sign lit in the early hours of the morning with blue and red lights flashing in the frame. Members of my community I recognized were running and carrying bodies from the scene of the shooting. I could have been there… I was supposed to be there… I remember reaching for my phone. 150 different text messages. Hundreds of missed calls. News had spread and it had spread fast. “Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running”; the tweet had made rounds. I had never used the “marked-safe” feature before on Facebook, but it was the fastest way to inform loved ones I was safe before deciding to head home and do whatever I could to help.

I kissed my partner Will goodbye, and immediately head home. As I drove back into the city from his place in Lakeland, FL helicopters hovered over the Orlando skyline, police cars blocked the exits into downtown and I had to show ID to get to my apartment less than half a mile from the club. News stations were already lining Orange Ave., various individuals were recording the events as they unfolded blocks away. I received a text that friends are gathering at the hotel where families were directed to get information on their loved ones. Many of our friends were at the club that night, and we had no information yet. Reroute to the hotel, and I arrived amidst chaos. Now, I don’t know if you have ever witnessed a hispanic person mourn, but it is by far one of the most gut wrenching scenes to walk into. The sliding doors opened to a hotel lobby filled with nurses, family members, friends, and police officers who I only assume were there to control the crowd. Time goes by and I find my friends. A a doctor from Orlando Health steps up on a chair to address the crowd: “Now some of you… in fact many of you will not hear your loved one’s names on this list, but we are doing our best to gather information as quickly as possible.”

Names got listed off one at a time. “You are to either gather at this door for Orlando Health, the far door for Florida Hospital, or another door for “more information”… everyone knew what that meant. As the list came to a close, people began to panic. Days go by and the new daily routine continued. Watch the news, hope to see someone you haven’t heard from interviewed on TV, so you know they are alive. Fellow bartenders were all on edge about returning to work at their respective bars; myself included. I worked at various bars in the area and for months after the massacre I put on my best running shoes… just in case. I carried my sister’s pocket knife she gave me to protect myself… just in case. I checked for the exit signs after walking into every establishment… just in case. I walked through metal detector after metal detector for months at clubs and bars for vigils and remembrance ceremonies… just to make sure. It was the most PTSD inducing year of my life. However…

What people don’t understand about the Orlando community was the sense of tender-loving humanity that occurred in the city following the massacre. People smiled at each other more. People hugged and laughed a little bit more genuinely. People looked at one another and saw themselves and the community coursing through each other’s veins. The pride flags that lines Thornton Ave. in Downtown blew a bit more regally, and rainbows appeared year after year at the ceremonies to honor those departed. For the month of June I will be curating music playlists for our Top Ten meant to pump you up and keep you dancing all month long. This week, the playlist is not only meant to help you get ready for a night on the town, but also to help you power through Darren Floro-Bryant's workout in this issue! Enjoy! -Chris G.

This workout is designed to attack every aspect of the body, promoting a greater use of range of motion, stabilization, balance, and stamina/endurance. This is achieved by creating a flow between exercises and utilizing compound movements. Do each exercise for 12 reps, before moving onto the next, but there is no rest until all of the exercises have been executed. Then a quick hydration break and start again!

ARIES: You are going to do the best that LIBRA: You are about to burnout from you can to bring to life the dreams that working too hard. You need to breathe you have been chasing your whole life, and allow yourself for some time off. If this week. You are finally going to take you dont then you are not going to want that step that you have been waiting all to come back to work tomorrow, let this time to get to. THRIVE QUEEN! alone the next day. TAURUS: You love doing philanthropy work when you can, but sometimes you begin to get frustrated with the negative mindset that some of the people involved have. This week, try to focus on the good that you are bringing to the table instead of the negative. GEMINI: You are keeping your eye on the prize this week, but that prize has NOTHING to do with your current trajectory. You are trying to veer off on another path and while that is a great idea, focus on what you need to complete currently first. CANCER: Do you like traveling? Do you like having good friends? Do you like making memories? Do we have an idea for you! Get some friends together and start planning a friend trip somewhere. It might be the best or worst idea ever, but right now it sounds fun. LEO: You need to focus on making REALISTIC goals for yourself this week because last week you got upset that you couldn’t complete what you set yourself out to do. That is no-ones fault but your own and you need to realize that. Own it. Grandiose ideas are great too though!

VIRGO: You are upset this week with people around you who dont seem to be grounded in reality, but you need to realize that some people live in another world and that’s okay. Let them live their fantasy. Reality will hit them soon enough.

SCORPIO: You have some friends who are worried about your path in life and while you dont seem too concerned about it, you do think that their opinion is important so how can you approach the situation and talk to them without getting too flustered? SAGITTARIUS: Home life can be a bitch. Relationships can cause so much drama… but then again this week you need to look at your life through a magnifying glass and see what (if anything) you are projecting on your family and significant other. Maybe you’re the reason for the drama. CAPRICORN: Unclear communication is the WORST thing that can happen in a work setting, relationship, friendship… everything. Why? Because you know that emotions can be high and cause others to be incredibly reactionary to what might have been said. Be clear in your intention this week. AQUARIUS: You are partnering with someone on a project that they do not feel comfortable with. But because they see how intensely focused you are on the project they are nervous to say anything to you in fear that you will take it personally. Be open to critiques. PISCES: You are feeling very impulsive this week but that’s just because you are nervous. You have no idea how to navigate your impulsivity because you feel pressured to make a decision immediately. If you can tell people to chill while you make your choices, then you will regain control and ease some nerves along the way.

Netta released her vibrant video to her ode of self-love “I Love My Nails.” With a major dose of self-confidence, “I Love My Nails” is an uplifting reclamation of the little things we do just for ourselves that get us back on our feet when we are at our lowest point. Painting and building her nails became her own form of self-therapy and helped Netta when dealing with rejection and putting color back into her life, to which she shows in her latest video. The video is symbolic to Netta’s growth, finding herself evolving and growing like the trees, vines, and flowers around her as well as her nails. She is skipping in an open field representing her found freedom behind the shackles of selfdoubt and no confidence. It is an inspiring message to those who have lost themselves during a heartbreak that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. “I Love My Nails” (S-Curve/Hollywood Records) is the latest track from one of the world’s most beloved quirk-pop masters – an artist that has continually redefined the boundaries of pop music with humor, versatility, creativity, and of course her powerhouse vocal ability. It follows in the one-of-a-kind footsteps of several past global smash hits from Netta including the aforementioned “Toy” (over 161 million views), as well as “Bassa Sababa” (over 239 million views), “Ricki Lake” (over 10 million views), and her most recent drop “CEO” (over 6.8 million views). This summer, Netta is set to perform at Chicago Pridefest on and NYC’s Pride Island as well as hitting up major cities Philly and DC for a first time performance. These shows are absolute must sees, One’s To Watch even stated, “you are a bit delinquent if you haven't caught the awe inspiring persona that is Israel's Netta. A woman of high friction fun, her live shows and performances are superlative generators.” You can find more info HERE. Netta has become one of the trailblazing global pop innovators in modern music, turning the genre into a colorful funhouse of fizzy experimentation. Since winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 with “Toy”, she performed on NBC’s TODAY, dropped her ‘Goody Bag’ EP, was a guest on Switched On Pop discussing her personal journey as an artist and what it takes to make the perfect Eurovision song, performed for Billboard, and was spotlighted by Consequence of Sound who said she has “dominated stages around the world and seen her music spread like wildfire”, BUST who called her the “soulful singer creating escapist videos you didn’t know you needed” and Hey Alma who praised her as a “role model”. During the pandemic she also released a covers EP (‘The Best Of Netta’s Office - Vol. 1’) which, inspired by her YouTube performance series of the same name, included mind-altering interpretations of songs like Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and the Mary Poppins staple “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Netta Show Dates Jun 18th - Chicago, IL - Chicago Pride Fest | Jun 22nd - Philadelphia, PA - The Fillmore Jun 23rd - Washington, DC - Union Stage | June 25th - New York, NY - Pride Island

Dear Peach, I am working overtime at work and I am losing the drive to continue. Legitimately thinking about quitting my job and starting something new. How can I manage handling the stress of work and stay in the job while trying to navigate my mental health?

So, I think there is a bit of an issue here. Most peope who would tell you to stay in your job are probably not as well versed in the mental health realm as a therapist or counselor who can help you navigate if it is healthy for you, however it is ultimately up to you. On the one hand: living without the wages that you are making now might cause more stress than you anticipated and you might regret quitting the position... but. if you think you can live without it for right now, then go for it. On the other hand: maybe you need to find something that you enjoy more and slowly transition into that position. If they are able to accomodate you trying out the new job while staying in your current one and beginning the transition slowly to make sure you're happy, then do that! It might be easier for you to make a living if so!
