By: Christopher Gonzalez LaCorte As a young queer boy growing up in the dance industry there was a de-masculinization of male dancers because what we were doing was not “masculine” enough for society, but in the dance industry there was a stereotyping of male dancers that we needed to be more “butch” in our movement. The constant back and forth from dance teachers and audience members alike caused myself and many of my classmates to feel less-than because we didn’t know where we fit in this world we wanted to be a part of. On the one hand, we wanted to find ourselves and express what we were dying to let out, but on the other hand we were oppressed by the stigma surrounding dancers and the threat of “not getting hired” or “not getting into schools” because our movement was too effeminate.

However, around 2007 a choreographer by the name of Bobby Newberry changed that stigma for a lot of male dancers by blurring the lines between femme and masc movement.

A life-long performer, Bobby grew up singing long before he choreographed, but his career trajectory brought him into the world of dance where he was met with some backlash at his self-expression by studio owners, parents and fellow competition judges.

As a dance teacher, he encouraged dancers to express themselves and experiment with new movement when possible. Throughout his time on the dance convention circuit and teaching at some of the world’s most famous dance studios, he spread his love for movement and self expression to thousands of dancers during the early 2000s and today; including myself. Since then, Bobby has worked extensively in the music industry working for artists like Pussycat Dolls, Eminem, Missy Elliott and more. His name is synonymous with a dance style known as "street jazz: and he has paved the way for many choreographers today.

His recent video ‘RIDE’ featuring an all male cast, was a new exploration for Newberry with his first experience creating male partnering for the dancers, coordinating all of the logistics during a pandemic and his first real intimate scene on film. The video is bright and fun with a hint of sexiness, as on par with Newberry’s dance style. With an all-star cast of dancers, Newberry hits the mark with a video that is relatable in content as well as aesthetically pleasing to watch with sharp choreography, high energy and beautiful cinematography.

Newberry will be headlining Miami Pride this year, as well as releasing new music in August.

Well you know what, you should be happy with yourself first and foremost, which it sounds like you are. If you put in the time to lose the weight to where you feel most comfortable, then what else is there to worry about?

Babe, heres the thing: People always want to judge other people's happiness. People feel as though there's a lack of authenticity on social media in people's happiness because "why else would they be posting it, other than for attention"? And you know what I say to that: ABSOLUTELY I WANT THE ATTENTION. Did I lose weight for health reasons, sure.

Did I lose weight to look better naked, YES! So, here's my advice: Get naked, or put on your favorite new swimsuit... and get the hell out there and flaunt your stuff. So get to it, and enjoy it!

That guy is wicked hot. Why is he wearing a shirt?

That’s my thought bubble every time I look at the interwebs. If there’s a cure for this, I don’t want it.

Take it slow. Show it off. Why are we pretending like we’re not all trapped inside this prison we call clothing?

I shall be free.

Women can do what they want, but for me, men, of any sex, are where it’s at.

That shiny, sinewy torso. The way a chest rests on a man’s midsection, like a king on his throne. Whether the abs are chiseled or whether there’s more of a paunch, as long as there is a proportionate and symbiotic relationship with that juicy chest, I’m good. I am such a breast man that it should be illegal.

THE BUNNY HUNNY The neurotic gym bunny body is rarely a turn-on for me.

However, occasionally, a gym guy can make it swagger.

He adds some sass. He adds some ass. He likes to shake that booty, and he has an online subscription to the New York Times.

He’s a spiritual overachiever. Okay, he’s just an overachiever. He has a couple drag queen friends, but he knows that’s not enough. You see him at the gym every time you’re there, and he’s usually by himself, pensive and introverted.

Still, he can’t hide it. There’s an operatic tiger inside. Look closely. You can’t miss it.

THE WAIF

I love my body. I love your body. I want us all to be happy. I celebrate myself, and what I shall assume, you shall assume.

I like a man I can toss around. Body is proportionate, lean, tight and smooth, but not frail. Strong. Sturdy. Self-possessed and solid.

This is the swimsuit issue. This is where we show the beauty of the superficial and the diverse and that deep shining light that reflects off the sun and the visor and back to all of us.

If I can manage to make him laugh, his whole-body shakes. He likes to move it move it. When he sees a solid piece, his eyes light up like a kid on Christmas morning. I envy his joy, his panache, his verve.

Whether I’m into you or not is a case-by-case basis, but below are some guideposts for aesthetics and bodies that I really, really enjoy. Maybe you enjoy them, too?

THE FIGHTER

THE TWUNK Youth truly is wasted on the young. I saw this guy at the grocery store the other day. Probably about 16 months out of high school. Wearing that slutty gym workout shirt that shows off the titties. Cut by one of his Bros so it’s barely even there, the opening goes all the way around from the armpit down to the waist. This clueless young man, bright and beautiful in his incipient masculinity – the Greek ideal wrapped in Georgia Tech basketball shorts – had no idea what this dirty world has in store for him.

He also had no idea I was cruising him. I found it all very fetch.

DADDY FAT STACKS Too much is never enough. Lay that beef on the biscuit.

I like it when a man has a body that is what it is, but has one body part that just rebels. It’s too big. It’s too swollen.

It just doesn’t make sense with the rest of the physique.

Bring it on. Life is a mystery. Life is absurd. I kind of want you on top of me.

Whether he finds catharsis in wrestling, boxing, MME or any other form of combat entertainment, you know him.

He’s the hero – and the Hamlet – of his own prosaic bootstraps story. He can tell the real thing from the fake. From the balloon. from the façade. A good hunter is self-possessed. This man knows his body like a violinist knows his fiddle. He’s taut. He’s so alert he’s almost feral. Almost.

When the beast learns restraint, it makes the sweetest symphony.

DONALD GLOVER Damn bitch, you are fine. Dem titties. That ass. The hipster belly. The songs the shows the persona, the cutie, the wit, the artist, the visionary, the MAN. I’m closing out my list by name-checking Donald Glover as a body type to tell you to up your game, friend. Stop pretending to be a star. Stop endlessly quoting your favorite drag queens and calling it a personality. Just be the best, most beautiful, fabulous and resplendent version of yourself you can be. Trust me. That milkshake will bring all the boys (and more) to the yard.

THE FLESH LIGHT I like a body when you can see it breathe. You can see every atom of a guy’s soul respirating through the skin.

He shines. He shimmers. He moisturizes.

He’s not ashamed of his stature or his curves or his shape.

He’s not plus-size. He’s not even a size. He’s a phenomenon. You cannot resist his sensuality. And he knows it.
