FORTUNE FEiMSTER IS GiViNG THE GAYS SOMETHiNG TO TALK ABOUT

The comedian on her pandemic success, going hard on the wine and getting closer to an even bigger break By Chris Azzopardi Photos courtesy of Fortune Feimster, Netflix, and Lionsgate

some light at the end of the COVID tunnel. I’m doing a lot better. It does feel a lot more hopeful, thank goodness. I mean, it’s been a doozy. I can’t believe it’s been a year. I think we’re all thinking back to, you know, where were you when Tom Hanks got COVID? In addition to a daily radio show and her (Laughs.) weekly podcast, Feimster, who rose to fame as The Person You See Everywhere in Bit Shit got real at that point. Parts (including “Chelsea Lately,” “The It got real. I don’t know why it took that. Mindy Project” and “The L Word: Generation That first half … you know, I was supposed Q”), has been doing press to talk about the to go on this big tour, and my first tour date projects she’s a part of that have all come was actually going to be Grand Rapids on out during the pandemic to satiate our need March 15, and they canceled it the night for existential relief. Aside from her own before I was supposed to leave. But then it Del Mar,” “Chick Fight,” “Friendsgiving” just kept going and kept going. But no one was, like, having a great Kenan Thompson’s NBC sitcom “Kenan” year, so you have to think and realize the and voices multiple characters on the Fox whole world is going through this really hard time. And I think we’re getting through it, so animated series “Bless the Harts.” I’m feeling optimistic. The pandemic has been good to her booming acting career, but also to her love A year ago, here in Michigan, at least, it was life: Feimster married wife Jacquelyn Smith like, “OK, 14 days. Just stay in your apartment. in a small ceremony in October. She says Don’t leave. And then it’s gonna be over.” it’s made her an even bigger fan of Michigan Yeah, we were so naive. We were given that Jax, as she calls her, is from the rescheduling shows for May of last year, Mitten State. “We try to spend at least one which seems laughable now because we’re holiday — or weekend or two — out there still trying to figure it out for fall of 2021. I in either Detroit or East Lansing or Grand was lucky I got to hunker down with my lady Rapids. We like it all.” Jax and my dogs. My pets — that’s who got us through this time, for sure. During our conversation, Feimster, yes, talked some more — this time about how Are you still on the bottle-of-wine-every-otherher character in “Yes Day” might actually day regimen? be gay, being drawn to the insanity of I got better. You seem to pop up in the most random of places. You’ve played janitors, grave diggers, a fairy gay mother... Now I need Hollywood to let me do more What kind of projects are you working on right than be the fun pop-up that brings some laughs. I’m ready to really sink my teeth now? I just wrapped the sitcom “Kenan” for NBC. into some bigger roles. So hopefully that’s I have a recurring role. I did not foresee coming. that one coming, so that was a nice little cherry on top. I’ve been doing “The Netflix Is that what you’ve been working toward? Afterparty,” which is really cool, with David Yeah, I do a lot of development, I do a lot Spade and London Hughes. And then I had of writing, and I’ve sold a couple movies to all these movies — I think I’ve had five Amblin (Entertainment). In the past I’ve movies — come out in the last six months. sold TV shows to ABC. So I’m trying to get (Laughs.) Which is crazy, but it’s because I one of those movies off the ground that filmed all of them before the pandemic and we’ve written. We wrote another movie in they all got held up, the release dates got quarantine that we hope to pitch around. I pushed. They were supposed to originally created those TV shows because I was trying come out at different times and then, all to give myself an opportunity to, like I said, of a sudden, it was just like, release the be a bigger part of a show. | 15

And I got to film my pilot for ABC, which is really cool, even though that didn’t move forward. It eventually led to me doing “The Mindy Project.” So now with movies, I’ve been kind of focused on writing movies, because I’ve been lucky to be in a lot of movies, especially lately. Sometimes in Hollywood you just have to write that yourself.

scripts you’re just kind of going through like, “Yeah, that’s cute. That’s cute.” You know? But this had me crying. So I knew the movie was insane, and I was like, “God, how are they going to pull this off?” And I was like, “If they’re asking me to be in this movie, I’m being in this movie. It’s the best thing I’ve read in so long.” Why Pinky? Is there a story behind your character’s name? There’s no backstory. There’s very little backstory on the Talking Club, which makes me want Kristen (Wiig) and Annie (Mumolo) to write a sequel, which also involves the Talking Club. I want the sequel to be them coming back from their trip, telling the Talking Club.

Do you know any women like Barb and Star, or Pinky? Are you friends with any? Oh, gosh. I mean, I’ve hung out with plenty. I’m from the South, so those outfits are So I have, in honor of “Barb and Star Go to Vista certainly, uh, not foreign to me. We’re all like, Del Mar,” this special little “Barb and Star” cup. “These outfits are hysterical.” And people I love it. That was one of my favorite movies from home were like, “That’s what I wear.” to do. That was such a treat, seeing that come out. The only bummer is: that’s a movie In addition to “Barb and Star,” of course, you’re you want to see with a house full of people in “Yes Day.” You play Jean, the paramedic. Is it in a theater. It’s one of those movies, I think, safe to say that you probably shouldn’t be, um, that is infectious, ’cause people are laughing driving an ambulance? (and) it makes other people start laughing One-hundred percent, I should not be. Yeah, and you’re all laughing together. So I’m glad Jean (owns a) fleet of ambulances, even it came out (so) people can enjoy something though she sucks at driving that one. It’s silly during quarantine. But hopefully — always fun to pop in as these characters, I don’t know if you can, like, release the like you said, that kind of just are a little off. movie online and then also put it back in the That’s kind of my brand of humor. theater. I’ve been a fan of hers for anyways, so every year, actually, it should get a so long. And I was nervous to meet her just because she’s done so many projects and is theatrical release. I hope so. It does seem that gay men in still in my category of “movie star,” which particular really took to that movie, which you don’t have as many these days. And she makes me so happy. People either loved it was so lovely. In my very first scene with her and are obsessed with it, or they were like, I had to drive the ambulance. And I felt like “I hated it. I turned it off after 20 minutes.” Jean because I was ... I didn’t know. I feel like in the last year because of the pandemic every day has been a “no day.” I mean, even for the adults, right? What will be your “yes day” when you can finally say yes to the things that you’ve been saying no to? Oh, man, just hugging people. My friends, especially. A lot of hugs. I mean, every day is a yes day for me when it comes to like, “Are we gonna order out or have wine?” I’m always like, “Yes.” So I probably need to reel in my yeses. But I will just be excited to get to travel again and see my family. And so, I’ll be saying yes to a lot more social activities, whereas before I was like, “I just wanna go home and sit on my couch.”

Spring Vibe Check It’s been a year since this time last year, and that can only mean one thing: Spring is back! While many have not stopped enjoying the outdoors, for the few that actually stayed quarantined the entire year, you might be a little nervous heading back to the outdoor festivities. The vaccine might give you peace of mind, but rejoining society after a year of isolating from it might be a little scary. Fear not! If you are ‘vaxxed’ and ready to have some fun with the rest of us, you can take a simple Spring Vibe Check. Developed in Follow Mitzi @itsmitzip the research laboratory of my good friend Bernadette Bignome, the test checks if you’ve got the right vibes to rejoin society. And the best part? It’s very accurate and can be taken either sublingually or bilingually. Taking the test will either pass or fail your vibe check. What happens if you pass? I sat down with Bernadette to break down your next steps. “If you pass the vibe check, you’re ready to rehabilitate with the world that never quarantined. You should still take precautions like wearing a mask and avoiding Karens™ who still believe the virus is a hoax. But other than that, go out there and have some fun,” Bernadette explains. Once you’ve passed, a good start would be to get a new springtime wardrobe, get a haircut and really change it up this year, you’ve earned it! But what of those who fail the vibe check? While scary, you can still enjoy this Spring season, you’ll just have to wait until you’ve taken the required ‘vibe counseling’. At the Sylvan Vibing Center, people can take time to chill, relax and get on the right vibe with the rest of the world. The course is a two-day circuit party that will change your entire vibe or your money back! Founded by Bernadette’s husband, Bernie Bignome, the program has never failed. “We find when people go to circuit parties and are introduced to heavy amounts of drugs and alcohol in a small window of time, they chill-out and stop being so uptight about everything. I find that to be key to reclaiming your vibes,” Bernie describes his groundbreaking program. With the sunny days of Spring upon us, and a year of social quarantine behind us, let’s all pass this year’s Spring Vibe Check so we can be chill and enjoy the weather with the rest of the world. Get vaccinated, wear a mask and be mindful of others. Also, don’t be afraid to offer vibe checks to anyone you feel isn’t vibing.

Yours in passing the vibe check,

Because we all need a wise, Lesbian BFF! Happy Spring! The birds are chirping, and the trees are blooming. I just love Spring. I am so excited about the next few months. I was asked to do my column weekly because of your continued support. I couldn’t have done this without it. So, send in those questions, and I will continue to answer them - and remember the answers to your questions are strictly coming from the Lesbo. The owners and my editors don’t write this column. Send your burning questions to askthelesbo@peachatl.com. Dear Lesbo I am super excited and, at the same time, in a quandary. Both my partner and I are fully vaccinated. We have for over a year now been at home with the rest of America. No restaurants, no clubs, no dancing, no travel. I was so disappointed that my partner refuses to ease up on the homebound life. Why be vaccinated? I set up an amazing date weekend with us flying to the Keys for some fun in the sun. When I got home with tickets and sunscreen, as well as a new bathing suit, I was immediately shot down and told by him we weren’t going anywhere! As much as I love my relationship, I need to get out and live again. Should I go alone? Should I stay? Should I drug him and throw him in the car and drive to the Keys? Please help. Solitary Sucks! Signed NEED TO GET OUT

a beach house. This kind of partying with small groups is perfectly acceptable. If y’all go out, wear a mask in public, socially distance yourselves. Or have a house party, blast the music, dance naked, and party like it’s 1999! This way, you both win. I hope this helps and SOLITARY turns YALL to SUN BUNNIES.

My parents are coming from NY and haven’t met my girlfriend. My girlfriend is full of tattoos and has piercings in her nose, eyebrows, and lip. I’m nervous for both my parents and my girlfriend. I love that my girl has tats and piercings, but my parents are quite the conservatives. Do I ask my girl to leave for the weekend (she’s not going to want that for sure)? Do I ask her to take out piercings and wear long sleeves? Do I get my parents a hotel (they won’t)? Please help me! LOSING MY MIND Dear Losing Don’t stress out about this. Your interpretation of your parents is just that: YOURS. You really should be asking yourself some questions: are you ok with her tattoos and her piercings? Most of the time, we have built up the way people are going to react in our minds. Usually, the reaction is the polar opposite of what we thought. Miss Losing, if you love your girl, her tats or piercings should have no bearing. Suck it up, sister, and let your parents fall in love with her as well. Marci Alt is a household name within the Atlanta LGBTQ+ community – she created The Gay Community Yellow Pages and runs the popular Gayborhood online platform. Being part of the community does not give her the experience alone to answer the questions on this page, but many years owning and running several successful businesses and being the parent of two amazing children certainly quantifies her knowledge, which she so generously shares with you in this column.

Dear NEED TO GET OUT I understand this dilemma, truly. Please keep in mind we are still in this pandemic. I understand you both have been vaccinated. However, this doesn’t guarantee you are free from contracting the virus. There are too many strains. It also doesn’t mean you have to turn into the hermit couple either. Be Do you have a question to Ask the Lesbo? Please smart about it. Go to the Keys, drive your car, so email your questions to you are limiting the exposure. Dear Peach, I recently had a conversation with a friend who asked me about my sexual preferences in regards to my “position”, however when I replied and told him that my preference was NOT penetrative sex they laughed and thought it was a joke. Am I wrong for not necessarily enjoying penetrative sex but only preferring other forms of intimacy?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Someone told me recently that they were also more interested in having a mutual connection in other ways than just penetrative sex! Sex is a multi-faceted and complex mixture of emotions and trial/error. In order to know what you like, you have to be open to trying new things… now, if you have tried those things in the past and you have said, “eh… not for me” then that’s YOUR DECISION. No-one gets to dictate how you use your body, express your sexuality or intimately form connections with other human beings. You are your own person, with your own kinks and interests and that’s what makes you, YOU.
