From the Editor Clothes really do make the man. And for me, clothes also help to set a mood and an attitude for not only an event but also an entire season. That’s why Spring for me is so much fun, because of all of the enthusiasm that I feel inside is somehow transported to what I wear – and what I want to wear. In this issue we asked Brad, who is also one of our local cover guys from our model search, to sport a few fashions from Boy Next Door Menswear. On the pages, you’ll see how floral prints are taking over and how short sleeve shirts are becoming one of the most versatile clothing items of the season. We also give you the next installment in our fitness series by Darren Floro-Bryant to get your body ready for the beach (or wherever you choose to peel off layers), and if you’re in the mood for some performing arts, we recommend you read our Q&A with Freddie and Craig about the musical Falsettos now playing at Actor’s Express. Also, check out the lineup of some of the most significant LGBTQ movies from the last 50 years – Atlanta Pride and Out On Film are co-hosting a pretty fantastic film series starting April 4.

Having a Field Day!

Action Cycling Atlanta proudly presents the return of Field Day on April 6 to Emory University’s campus in support of ACA’s efforts to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS research and support Atlanta area AIDS service organizations. The friendly competition is basically a grown-up version of schoolyard activities like 3-legged races, hula-hoops, tug-of-war, dizzy lizzy, relay races, and plenty of other fun games. Field Day is not only fun to compete in but also to watch as the teams get all worked up and sweaty for a great cause. All participating teams compete to win the coveted 2019 Field Day Championship title by accumulating points by winning the games but also by fundraising for the 2019 Field Day’s beneficiaries – this year they are Action Cycling Atlanta and Hearts Everywhere Reaching Out (H.E.R.O.) for Children, Inc. Field Day hosted by Action Cycling Atlanta was a popular event in the early 2010s where hundreds of participants had fun playing schoolyard style games while raising dollars for Atlanta area charities. After the founders decided to sunset the event due to other priorities, Action Cycling Atlanta (ACA) re-started the event in 2018, and it has already become one of the key sporting and social events of the spring.

In the guise of satiric exploitation-horror, the all-female cast of The Secretaries takes an unflinching look at the warping cultural expectations of femininity. Pretty Patty Johnson is thrilled to join the secretarial pool at the Cooney Lumber Mill under the iron-fisted leadership of sultry office manager Susan Curtis. But she soon begins to feel that all is not right—the enforced diet of Slim-Fast shakes, the strange clicking language between the girls, the monthly disappearance of a lumberjack. By the time Patty discovers murder is part of these office killers’ skill set, it’s too late to turn back!

High Notes of Emotion

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt The musical Falsettos, playing right now at Actor’s Express, tells the story of forming a new kind of family. Peach spoke to director Freddie Ashley and actor Craig Waldrip, who also happen to form a couple offstage, about the appeal musicals and working together. Tell us a little bit about Falsettos. Freddie: It’s a beautiful show about how families can take on different forms. When William Finn wrote it, I think he was really ahead of his time. It’s very, very funny and ultimately quite moving. Craig: It’s a rare composer who can take you from laughter to tears over the course of one song. William Finn captures the messy, mixed emotions of real life. You are a couple working together on this musical – one as the director and one as an actor – how did that work out? Freddie: We’ve worked together a ton of times. I’ve directed Craig in A Man of No Importance, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rocky Horror Show, and Company. We generally do a pretty good job of keeping work at work and home at home. Craig: I always admire Freddie’s work, and I have great trust in his vision. As an actor, you never really know what an audience sees; you are too much in the thick of it. I think of the director as the interpreter between actor and audience. What were the advantages and challenges of working so closely together? Freddie: One advantage is that we know each other so well, so there’s a very easy shorthand. That’s also the challenge, I’d say. It can be easy for one of us to assume the other knows what we’re thinking. Craig: One of the challenges for me is fighting the perception that I will receive preferential treatment. I always have to audition just like everyone else, and I am never let off the hook for mistakes. But, I think of these as advantages too; it keeps me honest. What is it about Falsettos – and perhaps musicals in general – that is so appealing? Freddie: I love musicals. Adding music creates space for emotions and ideas to exist that may not be able to be held by the spoken word. In Falsettos, the music guides on the emotional roller coaster from laughter to tears.

10 | 04.03.19

Craig: I have always loved musicals since I was a child. When I was in middle school, I was obsessed with West Side Story, particularly the thrilling musical sequences and the cathartic release of tears. I feel the same way about Falsettos. While not as epic in scope, it is equally thrilling and emotional. The plot of Falsettos takes some surprising turns – how come it is still a very relatable musical despite the plot twists? Freddie: Without giving spoilers, I’d say we all have struggles at different points in our lives about how to grow up. We also share a responsibility to each other in ways that we don’t often want. What is our responsibility to the stranger who shows up at our doorstep and ends up in our lives? How can we love and forgive someone who may have hurt us? These are all present in Falsettos; they are very universal ideas. What’s up next for you guys? Freddie: I’m directing the Go-Go’s musical Head Over Heels at Actor’s Express this summer. I’m ridiculously excited! Craig: I have been on a hiatus from performing for several years, and have been enjoying civilian life. When Falsettos was announced, though, I dusted off my audition book because I knew I wanted a crack at it. Marvin has always been one of my bucket list roles. When this show is over, who knows? I’m never far away from the theatre, so anything could happen.

Falsettos is running now through April 28 at Actor’s Express. Get your tickets at actors-express.com.

Keeping the momentum going By Darren Floro-Bryant

It’s April, and summer is approaching quickly. You’ve proven you are disciplined and committed to working out. 6 am workouts are now a part of your life! You are the master of your body and are willing to do whatever it takes to stay on your fitness journey. You’re trying everything and feeling great about it. Classes after work, workouts at lunch are now your norm; you’re doing anything to fit in a workout.

A

couple of issues ago, I outlined a chest and triceps workout that followed a more traditional approach to weight training. It was meant to encourage muscle strength and growth. Today, I am going to give you a similar routine, but focusing on back and biceps. Similar to the chest and trieps workout some super-setting will be applied, but this time in the form of core exercises. Rest will still be a big factor in this workout, but the rest periods will be a little shorter and filled with core exercises. The core workout between the sets should be just enough of a challenge for your lower back, paired with the different grips and pulls (outlined below) for a well-rounded approach for your back. Get “Tucked” There are just a few things I want to mention before we get into the back and biceps workout: It is essential to keep your shoulders back and down in most back exercises. Think of “tucking” your shoulder blades into your back pockets throughout the entire movement to avoid using momentum to move the weight. Another way to look at it is to keep your shoulders shrugged down and away from your ears as this will help

20 | 04.03.19

keep the move out of the upper trapezius. There are a lot of tricks or tips out there to help with this concept, so choose one that works for you. Also, when it comes to back exercises, your chest is very important. Think of puffing your chest up to the bar or the grip, rather than pulling the bar to your chest. With saying this, also think of your elbows being the driving force of the move (i.e., drive the elbows to the floor and think of your hands as extensions of your elbows, almost like hooks). One last important tip is using your fingers or thumbs as measuring tools along the markings on the bar to ensure you are gripping the bar the same for each set. There are a ton more tips out there in addition to the ones mentioned above, but if you need further assistance, this would be an opportune time to consult with a personal trainer to help you perfect your form and help prevent injury. By keeping your shoulders back and chest up, will not only help give you the appearance of a bigger chest but more importantly, it will assist in achieving good posture.

50 Years of LGBTQ Cinema by Jim Farmer Fifty years ago, our brothers and sisters stood up for themselves against a police raid and changed the history of LGBTQ rights forever. The night of June 28, 1969, marked the beginning of the Stonewall riots, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village of New York. The riots are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading up to the modern fight for LGBTQ rights.

T

he liberation influenced every aspect of LGBTQ lives, especially cinema. In the 70s, LGBTQ characters began popping up on the silver screen out of the shadows and sidelines where they normally lived. It took a while for Hollywood to portray us three-dimensionally and not to kill us off with suicide or murder – or later, AIDS - or portray us all as unhappy and unbalanced, but we’re finally at a point where portrayals of LGBTQ individuals can be realistic and positive.

With Pride: Ruth Ellis at 100;” the ground-breaking “The Watermelon Woman;” the gay romance “Shelter;” the exuberant “Saturday Church” (with some of the cast of “Pose”); the excellent Kenya lesbian romance “Rafiki;” and the crowd-pleasing “Pride.” We look forward to sharing this free series with you.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, Out On Film has partnered with Atlanta Pride for “50 Years of LGBTQ Cinema,” a free film series that begins April 4 with “La Cage Aux Folles,” the comedy classic about a male couple whose lives get crazy when one’s son decides to get married. It inspired the Robin Williams-Nathan Lane film “The Birdcage” as well as a beloved stage musical.

Some people have asked how we came up with our schedule. When we decided to do a film series, we wanted to make sure of certain elements. We wanted to make sure we had films from each decade – the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000s, and 2010s. We wanted some variety – drama, comedy, romance, and history. Most importantly, as best we could, we wanted to make sure that the series was diverse and inclusive and had something for all audiences. It’s not a political series, more a glimpse at each decade and signature films from each one. Some of the films we tried to get just didn’t work out. The classic “Paris is Burning” was a first choice but is in limbo while a DVD re-release gets launched and there are some current licensing issues with “The Boys in the Band.” Nonetheless, we are all delighted with the line-up. Another priority was to avoid obvious choices and focus on a few under-the-radar selections. “Save Me” has long been a favorite of mine. It’s a terrific film starring gay actors Chad Allen and Robert Gant (“Queer as Folk”) as men who meet a Christian-run ministry trying to cure people of being gay. It’s extremely topical now, with conversion therapy in the news, and features a performance by Judith Light that is one of her finest. The affecting “Brother to Brother” takes place during the Harlem Renaissance as an elderly, gay black writer befriends a gay teenager. The series also offers the lesbian romance “Desert Hearts;” the empowering “Living 32 | 04.03.19

Getting Drafted By Jeff Fuller

My father was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He initially had orders to go overseas, but his orders were changed at the last minute, so, fortunately, he never had to face the horrors of that war. I grew up with a lingering fear that I would also get drafted during my lifetime. Initially, I thought the U.S. would go to war with the Soviet Union, but after the Iron Curtain fell, there was less of a danger that I would be drafted into military service.

I

never considered joining the military. I thought military guys were hot, but I think I was concerned that joining the military would reveal my secret passion for men. And in that era, it wasn’t even possible for a gay person to be open about his sexuality in the U.S. military. Engaging in “homosexual acts” was grounds for a dishonorable discharge. In 1993, shortly after he was elected, President Bill Clinton sought to end the practice of discharging gay soldiers. Faced with resistance from military officials as well as public opinion, Clinton settled for a compromise that would allow gays to serve as long as they kept their sexuality to themselves. This became known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” (DADT). While this new policy technically allowed gay soldiers to serve, it had the effect of creating federal law that being gay or lesbian was incompatible with military service. Many supporters of LGBT rights at the time saw this as a betrayal and sought to have DADT repealed. After two decades of lawsuits and work by such groups as Servicemembers United and changes in public opinion, President Obama and Congress repealed DADT, finally allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. I was not “out” until the early 2000s, so it took me a while to pay attention to this issue and realize its injustice. One thing that helped bring this issue to my attention was watching MTV’s The Real World: New Orleans. The adorable gay Danny had a boyfriend, Paul, who was an officer in the Army. Paul appeared in some scenes on the reality show but had to have his face blurred out because of the potential loss of his military career if his identity were revealed. After law school, I moved to Nashville, which is roughly sixty miles away from Fort Campbell, a large Army base. From time to time, I would see soldiers with their close-cropped haircuts frequenting Tribe and Play, the gay bars on Church Street. These bars were revolutionary at the time for being street-facing gay establishments in a conservative Bible Belt city. However, I had heard a story that some Fort Campbell soldiers requested that the bars put blinds in the windows to avoid being noticed inside the club in case other Army members were passing by on Church Street.

34 | 04.03.19

It was during this time period that the military was being deployed and redeployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. I admired the individuals who were willing to sacrifice so much for their country in an organization that did not allow them to be open about who they were. I hoped that this would change and in 2010 it finally did. In 2015, I met Del, the man who would become my husband. Del is a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and was in the Army during the final years of DADT. Del decided to re-enlist, and I am now a military spouse, something that I would never have dreamed possible even ten years ago. Technically, you could say I’ve now been drafted into military service in a very special way. I have seen positive, remarkable changes with respect to acceptance of gays and lesbians in the military during my lifetime, but the struggle continues. President Trump has banned transgender people from serving. People that are willing to give up the comforts of civilian life, be deployed to dangerous places, and potentially give up their lives in service to our country deserve our respect, no matter what their sexuality or gender identity. -Apart from being a Gay Generation-Xer, Jeff Fuller is an attorney, writer, travel blogger, historian, and military spouse. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Jeff went to college, graduate school and law school in the Southeast. He has called Atlanta home for the last decade but recently moved to DC to follow his husband on his military career. He occasionally blogs at journeyingjeff.com.

Him: lol no.

I’ve become a master at chugging my drink at the magic phrase “Your Lyft is here!”

Asking for a friend: Is it rude to toss a Xanax into someone’s mouth while they are talking?

VIRGO (AUG. 23 - SEP. 22) If you start working on small details today, you’ll end up making major headway with a project that has gotten somewhat out of control lately. Recent confusion will resolve into clarity today.

LIBRA (SEP. 23 - OCT. 22) Several worrisome minor problems are adding up to a somewhat heavy load today -- but you mustn’t let them weigh you down into immobility. Take things one at a time -- by the end of the day, you’ll have made good progress.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23 - NOV. 21) ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 19) If you need to take a break from your long to-do list today, don’t waste it on surfing the Internet (though you may be tempted to simply veg out for a while). A bit of exercise will clear your head and give you energy.

It may be time to reveal a secret you’ve been keeping -- something about yourself that embarrasses you. Someone close to you has the same secret, and your revelation will help you both understand that you’re not alone.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22 - DEC. 21) TAURUS (APR. 20 - MAY 20) Express your love for other people in tangible ways today -- material (flowers or a small gift) or physical (a hug or a gentle stroke). Today is one of those days when actions really do speak louder than words.

An authority figure of some sort may find fault with you today, or ask that you redo a job you’ve already done. Don’t react in anger. Take a deep breath and get to work. Tonight, exercise will release the tension.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUN. 20)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22 - JAN. 19)

Pay bills, take care of errands and attend to household chores -- today may not be the most exciting day you’ve ever had, but it would be a good idea (and personally satisfying) to take care of these humdrum matters today.

An authority figure of some sort may find fault with you today, or ask that you redo a job you’ve already done. Don’t react in anger. Take a deep breath and get to work. Tonight, exercise will release the tension.

CANCER (JUN. 21 - JUL. 22) When was the last time you hosted a dinner party? Well, today is an excellent day for event planning. You’ll likely find some inspiration in a cookbook or a food magazine. Try out a new recipe tonight.

LEO (JUL. 23 - AUG. 22) Although you may be in the mood for decisive action today, find time for a session of clearheaded strategizing. Don’t make any moves forward until you have the entire route (and a realistic budget) mapped out.

50 | 04.03.19

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20 - FEB. 18) Today you should shift your focus from the big picture to the fine print -- all your wonderfully innovative, creative ideas will come to nothing if you disregard these small (but significant) details.

PISCES (FEB. 19 - MAR. 20) Expect to gain a new understanding of a relationship today -- you may discover that someone’s feelings for you are deeper than you thought. Alternatively, you may realize that you’re the one whose feelings have deepened.

By Mikkel Hyldebrandt Trouble in the love department? With sex? Or just people in general? Send us your queries, questions, and problems, and you’ll get answers served straight up and with a little ice.

I

love the guy that I’m dating, but I prefer him when he’s naked. Both because he looks great and is very sexy that way, but also because he has terrible style – or rather no sense of fashion or style whatsoever. I work in the fashion industry, and I pride myself by my excellent taste and stunning wardrobe, and I really want to change up his style a little so we can be seen in public together. The times we have been out at events, I have almost been embarrassed at what he was wearing, and when I bring it up, he gets very defensive and argues that he has style, just not mine. I want him to be classy and cool like me – how do I change him? Sincerely Fashion Agenda Dear Fashion Agenda Feeling the need to change anyone is not the best premise for any relationship – please be aware of this before anything else. I understand perfectly why your boyfriend gets mad at you for trying to change him, especially because it pertains to his appearance. You may think that fashion from your perspective is what everybody should adhere to, but you work in the fashion industry, so your fashion sense can be pretty warped compared to everyone else. Of course, there is such a thing as dressing appropriately for an event or occasion, but as long as your guy doesn’t show up wearing something completely out of line and he’s otherwise fit to be out in public, how dare you be embarrassed about him? Instead of changing him, you should think about why you feel the need to convert him. If you really can’t picture yourself with him because of what he is wearing or you don’t want to be seen with him in public, it is pretty obvious that you need to make some serious changes.

U

p until very recently, I was in a happy, one-yearlong relationship with a gorgeous man, and I thought everything was going well until he completely ghosted me. For days I couldn’t get a hold of him, and when I finally heard from him, he just told me it was over, and that he wanted nothing to do with me. Since then he has blocked everywhere, and I don’t know where he is. I know this sounds very unlikely, but I had not even the slightest warning or sign that something was off. I am now left devastated and ruined, and I honestly struggle with moving forward, because I feel so abandoned. I’m trying to ward off negative feelings, but it is so difficult, because how can it not be me when he just left me like that? I don’t know what to do, and I feel very alone. Sincerely Abandoned Dear Abandoned It is easy for anyone to understand your feelings of abandonment. To have your world pulled away from under your feet like you have experienced is devastating. But you have to tell yourself this before going to a dark place even though it sounds like a cliché, but in your instance, it rings very true: It is not you; it is him. To put someone else through what you are going through without offering any sort of reason for this abrupt cutoff only goes to show that he has some serious issues and that he has probably concealed them for you, his family, and friends. So even though it is hard, try not to place blame on yourself for his appalling behavior. This probably goes much deeper than where you are emotionally right now. This looks more like mental illness or some sort of abuse that has forced him to act erratically with severe emotional carnage in his trail. In your situation, seek comfort with friends and family, see a therapist that can help you work through this terrible experience. There’s no easy way through an emotional blow like this, but you are already taking positive steps in letting the world know your pain. You are allowed to feel all of those things, but just remember that you are not alone.
