From the Editor Don’t you just love a good new year resolution? Yeah, me neither. It’s always more of something (money, love, travel…), or less of something (body fat, stress, drama…), but it’s almost always pretty unattainable. Or life gets in the way, and we happily forget that we vowed to be better people at the beginning of the new year.

Resolutions work for some, but instead affixing a strict timeframe or setting a goal that you know in your heart is not feasible, then work on being your own positive change in your life. Take my word for it. Or rather, take Jamie Kirk’s words on page 32 or refer to our list on how to get 2019 started right on page 46.

If you make one resolution this year, I simply ask you to pick up Peach every week as your premier guide to queer Atlanta.

Now, that’s a resolution that’s easy to keep!

Have a Blast from the Past Atlanta’s newest party is strictly 80s-themed and will take the Heretic back in time to the decade that produced some of the most danceable music. Welcome to the 80s! Or should we say… G8Yties?!

It’s no secret that Atlanta throws a good 80s party, but up until now none of them have been created for a gay audience. Party creator and promoter Tom Thomas wants to change that and take you back to the G8Yties. “The 80s are so hot right now, and a very special mood occurs whenever an 80s song is playing. Everybody sings along, and people move a little bit freer and frivolous on the dancefloor – that’s what I want to recreate,” says Tom Thomas about his G8Yties party concept, which is also the first 80s party targeted specifically at a gay audience. “I’ve been studying music videos from back then, and apart from some amazing ideas for decorations, it is safe to say that the 80s were super gay,” says Tom Thomas, “so this is the evolution of the 80s dance party – welcome to the G8Yties!”

For all of those who want 7” or more, DJ Mike Pope will be spinning all the favorite original 80s dance songs in their 12” extended versions to keep it moving on the dancefloor. 80s themed outfits are highly recommended but certainly not enforced, because it’s more important that the girls just wanna have fun!

5 Ways to Help a Friend Financially Without Giving Them Money

1. Offer personal advice Your friend or family member isn’t the first person to fall upon hard times financially; we’ve all been there.

Discuss your personal hurdles, as well as how you overcame those issues. When somebody knows they’re not alone in their struggles, it often gives them the necessary confidence to get back on the right track. Offer your assistance, but not easy money. If you do, you might be opening a Pandora’s Box of coming back for more.

2. Help them set up a budget Do you have a budget that works for you? If you’ve been successful in this area of your finances, there’s nothing wrong with offering this “service.” As easy as budgeting may be for you, others find it extremely challenging. Sit down with your friend, show them what a solid budget entails, and illustrate how they can use this to their advantage moving forward. Talk to them about how they can cut the fat from their expenses, show them how to use apps to get cash back, and teach them a few of your tricks on saving on everyday items, like gas and groceries. Laziness is no excuse to spend more than necessary, but it’s the root problem of many people’s financial crises.

3. Let them know that you’re available in other ways Everybody faces rough financial patches from time to time. When you have somebody to lean on it’s much easier to make your way through these periods and come out a better person in the long run. Don’t turn your back if your friend needs an ear. When a friend or family member comes knocking for cash, pause before opening your wallet – because rarely does this situation go off without a hitch. That’s not to say you can’t lend a helping hand – you can – but your goodwill doesn’t have to put a dent in your own financial sitch. Steer the conversation away from handouts with these alternatives to providing support without it costing you a dime.

4. Review their income and expenses There’s a fine line between helping a friend and going beyond your duty. If the person is open to you reviewing their financial situation, including income and expenses, sit down at a convenient time to see what is going on.

Many people need another set of eyes for them to truly realize where they’re running into trouble.

Note: If you are not comfortable with this, there’s nothing wrong with telling your friend that you’d rather not see their personal information. It may be easiest to simply give your friend money and hope it helps them financially. While it may get the person out of a jam for the time being, they are likely to face the same problems again in the future.

5. Show them how to make new money There’s no shortage of fast ways to make cash if you work the gig economy to your advantage. Resources like Instacart, Airbnb, Lyft, Uber, Roadie, DoorDash and Rover.com provide opportunities to anyone with a home or car to make extra income with little effort. Any one of these resources can help bring in hundreds of dollars per week when you’re dedicated, and that may be the ticket to getting your friend or family back on track without digging into your own pockets. A Model Entrepreneur

In your work as a model, what are some of the challenges?

I used modeling jobs to support myself through my bachelor’s program at Georgia State University. One of the challenges was payment as it was often done at random, and you never knew exactly when or how much you’d be paid. Another issue was inclusiveness. I’ve been told they only needed one person of color and no more, and I’ve been told to portray myself as “less gay” because “not even gay men want gay me.” The prejudices that we experience in society have a resounding influence over the casting process. Most importantly, however, was the discomfort and lack of safety in the industry. Many models are attractive young people, and those in charge of casting decisions often take advantage of their influence with those young models. I’ve been subject to this type of manipulation in my career, and I’ve heard horror stories of young men and women, who were put in terribly uncomfortable positions and forced to make split-second decisions that may impact their careers.

You have just created the new app Allure Models – tell us about it.

Allure Models was created in direct response to the experiences mentioned above that deterred me from modeling. With the assistance of mobile technology, both casting agents and models can navigate their bookings easier, safer, more confidently, and comfortably. Booking payouts are automated. Casting users view models whose availability match their own production details: date, time, location (proximity). In that way, Allure Models streamlines the processes of booking, management, and payment – and it curates safety, comfort, and professionalism that encourages good behaviors and discourages predatory practices.

If you are an aspiring model, how can the app help you?

about what’s beautiful, normal, safe, and acceptable. An industry with such impact deserves a more modern standard that is inclusive, diverse, mediated, empowering, safe, and consistent for all of its users.

You are an industrious guy – what’s up next for Micah?

In the immediate works is a monthly “Wine Down,” where I’ll invite students, professionals, entrepreneurs, press, influencers, and small business owners of specific minority communities to discuss “representation in the media.” We’ll gather for free wine, networking and a mediated convo about representation in media. I want to make sure we listen to our potential users, and that begins by emboldening the voices of otherwise marginalized people, in a safe, comfortable and convenient environment. Women, LGBTQ folk, Muslims, Asians, Indians, Latinx persons, African Americans, and everyone in between, will be given a glass of wine, comrades, and influential parties to hear their needs. Every one of these communities and deserve a voice in the creation and progress of the Allure Models app.

Any last words?

I’m excited to see Atlanta take flight, and I’m looking forward to adding to this marvelous city’s reputation and making it even more of a global leader. It is my goal to be part of a positive, people-based change in media, in order to better our society as a whole. Allure Models is my way of “being the change I wish to see in the world.”

This app will help aspiring models jumpstart their careers. They’ll be seen for production casting based on their own availability. They won’t be met with bias or favoritism, but rather be fairly represented on the basis of their own deserved ratings and portfolios. Most importantly, they can attend bookings confident of time accountability, payment security, and their own comfortability.

What do you hope to achieve with the new app?

I want to create a new standard and change the reputation of an industry that is known for being cut-throat, prejudiced, and predatory. I want to change the message that the industry is inadvertently or directly sending

Cher once jumped out of a bathroom window with her gay friend to escape the police. And if you also didn’t know that you mean as much to her as she means to you, well, now you do. The gay icon of all gay icons expressed just that (see her heartfelt quote below) when she called me in September while promoting her 26th (!!) album, Dancing Queen. Nicholas Hoult Gets in Formation ‘The Favourite’ actor reflects on his gay roles – and chats Beyoncé, wigs and Hollywood inclusion

By Chris Azzopardi Someday, if we’re lucky, we might get a full performance of Nicholas Hoult in a fluffy wig, his cheeks powdered and painted pink, with heeled feet, all the while vivaciously lipping Beyoncé’s “Hold Up.” Give the people what they want, I say.

And for 13 gloriously gay seconds in November on his Insta he did. Without even having to ask for it, we were blessed by Hoult and his perky brows serving Bey realness.

“I wasn’t prepared to see this on my feed,” one commenter wrote. Actor James McAvoy couldn’t resist chiming in: “When I grow up...I want to be inside your wig.”

Hoult loves Beyoncé, which makes him seem a lot like you and me (the choppy international cell reception when he calls me in America from the U.K. further cultivates his everymanness). And wigs? He must love them enough to wear three of them in his new film The Favourite, all of which were given divine lady names: Babs, Lulu and Hattie. The role isn’t gay in any obvious way, but because the 18th century is long over and men’s hair has deflated considerably in the 300 years since and he wears heels, this could arguably pass as the 29-year-old Brit’s closest encounter to drag yet.

Flawless is the only way Beyoncé could possibly describe his performance in The Favourite, and she must have loved his tender heart in Tom Ford’s 2009 film A Single Man, portraying Colin Firth’s maybe-gay lifeline, Kenny; of course she wanted to pinch his chubby pre-teen cheeks in 2002’s About a Boy (who didn’t?); and no way Bey didn’t appreciate the queer allegory of 2013’s zombie rom-com Warm Bodies.

Given how deliciously cheeky he is in director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite as the foppish Robert Harley, an earl who frolics around Queen Anne’s royal court as Anne (Olivia Colman) becomes the object of two women’s (Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz) ruthless affection, wigs will be snatched.

more serious, white frilly wig, and then Lulu was the rambunctious, red wig.

Something tells me you’ve seen a drag queen or two in your lifetime – or have maybe watched some RuPaul’s Drag Race?

You know what, I haven’t seen it before. I’ve gotta tune into it at some point because I’ve got everyone telling me it’s a good one, so I will watch that. Maybe I could be a judge on it or something sometime.

I think you could be a contestant at this point.

Yes, a contestant.

As great as you are in The Favourite, perhaps your best performance to date was posted to Instagram on November 21: a Beyoncé lip-sync.

(Laughs) Thank you. Yes, it was. A fine moment. I actually did that the year before, but I had to wait until the movie was out to release it. Yeah, that was in my trailer before I got onto set.

And you picked Beyoncé’s “Hold Up” as your song? That was all you?

Yes, yes, it was all me. We released one behind-thescenes of X-Men, dancing and stuff a couple of years ago, and then there’s this one. That Beyoncé song is how I felt, so I got into this character’s makeup and costume.

(Laughs)

Is Beyoncé your gay icon?

(Laughs) She’s the Queen Bey. I went to her tour. She was phenomenal.

I wish I could move like that.

Don’t we all.

Are you already planning your next lip-sync?

(Laughs) Yeah, I’ve got a whole back catalog, so it’s just in terms of when they’re released.

Now, The Favourite: Harley has been described as “effeminate.” Is that what you were going for?

I don’t think so. Because of the fashion of the era, the guys at that time were in the era of makeup and wigs and high heels and canes and lots of frills. But the character seemed quite manipulative and dry and, pathetically, a bit of a bully, and kind of playing a chess game with the other characters within the court.

Considering the costume, do you have a greater appreciation for what drag queens have to go through?

I guess so – just anybody who has to wear high heels. I know the pain of wearing those now.

One of your wigs was named Barbara, Babs for short.

Which one was she?

Babs was the main wig, and the larger of Harley’s personalities. She was the white, curly wig with two horns on top. She was the most delicious wig. Hattie was the

I think you’ve already auditioned. It’s this movie.

Exactly, I’ll send it in. That’s why I did it.

When were you first aware of the LGBTQ audience?

I don’t really see any audience as different, particularly, to be honest with you. I’m just telling stories that I like and then playing characters that I’m interested in. When I’m making things I’m not picking depending on the audience, but that’s really nice of you to say that I’ve got that following. That’s lovely. I guess that would go back to Skins or A Single Man, perhaps.

You played Tony Stonem in BBC’s British teen drama Skins, which ran from 2007-2013. How do you reflect on shooting that brief fling you had with Mitch Hewer’s Maxxie?

I thought he was such an odd character to play at times.

There were some similarities between him and Harley, I guess. He’s a fascinating character, a tricky one, and he’s a lot of fun to play. A nice change from what I’d been doing up until that point, work-wise.

How so?

Everything up until that point was fairly, perhaps, “nerdy guy” and this was someone who was quite alpha in his personality and traits and how he fit into that group.

How do you reflect on portraying Kenny in A Single Man? That role was beautiful to shoot because Tom Ford is a brilliant director. Working with Colin and doing those scenes ... it was just really beautifully written. And Tom’s understanding of each character. So, it was a great feeling to be in that world.

Did you notice more acknowledgement from the LGBTQ community after it was released?

Yeah, I think so. For me, it’s always that thing that telling stories gotta be from the moment, and that story is so heartbreaking in terms of the romance of it and the love of it. I think a lot of people can relate to that and the difficulties, and the world has changed to the positive in terms of that. But again, I do the work and then it goes off and lives its own life.

You never revisit these roles?

No, I never go back and revisit, to be honest with you.

Even you mentioning these things now, it’s difficult for

me to drudge up the memories because I kind of take what I’m focusing on in that present moment, or planning the next one. But it’s nice to reflect occasionally.

How have the gay and queer roles you’ve played spoken to you?

Both of those roles they were exploring, definitely. And fighting for a place, I’d say. They were lonely and felt displaced and they didn’t have a community, or they felt misunderstood. With those characters – well, not Tony, but certainly for Kenny in A Single Man. And Tony, it’s much different; he kind of has more power.

How does your character Mark, who’s gay, in the 2009 West End production of New Boy compare?

He was a different character because he was younger and he couldn’t understand his own feelings, and that made him funny but also someone who would be quite venomous, occasionally. And yeah, that character was at the turning point of discovering his sexuality.

Does playing a gay role come with a different sense of responsibility for you?

No, I feel responsible for every character, regardless.

When (I’m) playing real characters, I feel more of a responsibility, but otherwise no.

Of those roles, is one more significant to you than the others?

No, I don’t think so. They all mesh somewhat, I would say. You’re inhabiting these characters and their feelings as best as possible for that time, so each one is significant at that time.

After A Single Man, did an influx of gay roles come your way?

Not necessarily. I get sent quite varied things anyway because of the variety I’ve tried to play, so it varies hugely. I don’t think I saw an increase at that point, no; but perhaps an increase in roles in terms of stories being told that are more inclusive. You see more and more stories, and that’s just a sign not necessarily of me having done that but more the times – that things are changing, and it’s becoming represented better.

The Favourite is being celebrated for being so queer-inclusive. When you’re a part of a project that means something to a particular group of underrepresented people, does that feel different for you than doing something more mainstream like, say, X-Men? It’s like, you just see them as characters, as people and very good actresses. People keep mentioning that (it’s queer) or that it has female leads and it’s kind of surprising and disconcerting that it’s even a conversation as this point. It’s almost like we should have – I mean, it’s great that the conversation is happening and that these movies are getting made more and more, but it should be up to the point where it’s completely normal and it’s not even something that people have to keep feeling is unusual.

Are you encouraged to be part of the movement by seeking out roles that may push that movement forward?

Obviously, you want to be part of things that are relevant, if possible, but mostly you just want to tell good stories. You can’t always determine the effect that something is going to have or the place it’s gonna fill when the end-product comes out. You just try to work with the right people and tell stories you find interesting.

If you were caught in a gay love triangle with a king and his longtime secret lover and his secret lover’s cousin, who’d be playing the other roles?

It’d be people I look up to acting-wise: It’d be Christian Bale and Joaquin Phoenix.

And you’d be the cousin?

I guess so in that scenario, yeah. Christian’s probably the king, right?

I believe Batman has to be the king.

Always.

Don’t Do It. Don’t Do it!

I only have three words related to New Year’s Resolutions: DON’T DO IT. I think resolutions are a cop out. I think the assigned date of January 1st, is just a guidepost and a guideline to delay actions or activities that we are just putting off and delaying until this prescribed specific date and time.

If I hear, “New Me, New Year” one more time, I am literally gonna vomit. Why can’t the “new you” start on March 15, or September 30, why does change have to be dictated by a specific day? When we notice changes need to occur, we should do it immediately and not have wait until the date on the calendar is aligned with our desire to change a behavior.

For example (and I am going to use a fitness analogy, because it is the most common New Year’s resolution that we make): You want to sign up or renew your gym membership, but the gym is closed, and it reopens 12/31. You will probably default to thinking: “Darn, oh well, guess I won’t be able to sign up, since they are closed.”

Instead, you need to default to a Plan B, which is thinking about alternatives to the gym being closed.

You can sign up at another location, sign up on the phone, or maybe your workplace or school has a way for you to join a gym. But instead we get caught up in what didn’t work at the moment of convenience, and we end up not doing it, because we really don’t want to do it in the first place. Makes sense?

The example is exactly why I don’t support New Year’s resolutions. We need to live more in the moment. Do things as the “spirit” moves us to do so. We need to act more and talk less about our intentions. Our lives tend to become ordinary when we place limits (and timeframes) on when to accomplish a desired goal or accomplishment.

Resolutions compartmentalize us into when we should begin to take control over something that is holding us back or we want to change. When we should live healthily, stop drinking, eat better, etc. should not be fenced in on a ball dropping in Times Square. No one else should have the power to drive a change in our lives. We have the power to start the change, and we have the uncanny ability to take control of our lives at a moment’s notice. Real adults don’t give away their power.

As you ponder the changes that need to occur in your life, make sure you are driving change that impacts only you. Yes, others may be impacted by your decision, but the ultimate person that has to live with the outcome is you. You can call them resolutions, plans, goals, vision board activities, or maybe even visiting a psychic that outlines what your entire 2019 is going to look like from your previous life you lived 6 million years ago. Doesn’t matter. Just ensure that what you commit to do, you do it, and you do it on your own timeline and your own schedule. Not driven by a date.

You can lose weight, make amends with family members, start a cooking class, enroll in Real Estate school, save for a new car, who knows what it is for you. Just remember that you can dance in the storm, you don’t have to wait for it to stop raining. Stop waiting for the right circumstances.

Stop waiting for the right person to come along.

Stop waiting for someone else’s approval. Stop waiting to start. Stop allowing this short life to pass you by. You can do it now. Wherever you are, right now, you can start, right now, at this very moment.

Hey! To a New You

With a new year in swing, it’s time for a new you! My many circles of friends always seem to want the same three things each year, and those things read like any given self-help book: sexy body, lots of money and the perfect relationship. How does one get all three?

Well, you can do the ordinary route of: exercise, getting a better job, and seek someone to build a meaningful relationship with. But all those seem boring!I decided to ask around for more unique ways you can achieve all three. Since I already have a rockin’ body, my late husband’s fortune and the only person I could ever love is myself, I thought I was the perfect candidate for the job.

The first challenge I set out to resolve was getting a hot body. Sure, leading experts say a balanced diet and daily exercise are the pillars of all six pack abs and bodacious asses, but I was convinced there were other means to get the look. I chatted up a good friend of mine and recently-fired personal trainer: Jim Knutsack as we went through the drive-thru of McDonald’s. I wanted to see his take on how to achieve the perfect body.

“As long as you don’t touch your clients or make their shower water cold so they run out naked, all things are possible.” –Jim Knutsack, Ex-Personal Trainer Jim’s words ran in my mind with every bite of the Triple Big Mac I took. I wasn’t sure how it related to losing weight, when it hit me! Cold showers! Jim was obviously referring to cool sculpting, where you freeze your fat cells to death and then watch them disintegrate! What a great alternative to putting in actual effort. Now I tried to tackle my next challenge, one I never had problems with: money.

I made an unexpected visit to my accountant’s house where I interrupted a steamy session between her and someone I’ve never seen before. My accountant, Reeli Typinfast, shared some insights to gaining money as she put her clothes on. She mentions finding a better-paying job, inventing something, or asking family for charity were surefire ways to get money. She reminded me about online funding sites. People make a moving video with either real or false stories and strangers all around the world donate small amounts of money to them! I gave it a shot when I posted a video of me asking for more money than I already have, and I made two thousand dollars within a week! Resolutions were easier than I thought. I set out to conquer the third and final common resolution people make: love!

I love Love. I love the idea of Love. But so many people seem to have a hard time finding that perfect love, Hallmark and social media tell us we need if we want to feel any self-worth. I visited my friend Suzie Whips, who runs the local adult novelty shop and sex dungeon emporium just under Cheshire Bridge. She said the perfect love can literally be anyone or anything as long as there’s chemistry. I interviewed some of her customers, including recently-divorced Mandy, who was strapped upside-down on a cross as various masked men massaged her in oils. With blood rushing to her head, Mandy explained how the chemistry you feel with one person over long periods of time can be the same you feel with strangers only once. She suggested everyone who’s looking for love, go to a sex dungeon and try out some anonymous, kinky fun.

You’ll be in for a surprise! I admired Mandy’s look on love being as easily obtainable as a simple visit to a sex shop!

I feel these wise individuals have conquered the three most-basic resolutions almost everyone has promised to achieve at least once in their life. I hope these alternative ways to meet those resolutions help you, but if they don’t, make the same resolution I make every year: hug more dogs. I’m doing it right now!

I recently met this guy, and one of the things I thought was so wonderful and refreshing about him was his complete disregard of genderspecific norms. He is just the freest person I know, and he turns some incredible looks where he effortlessly mixes and matches across gender stereotypes. So admirable! But just recently, he confided to me that he was actually transgender and that he was coming to terms with the fact that he needed to transition publicly – and I am struggling with it. I am attracted to him, but don’t think I can deal with him being her. Please help me here.

Sincerely Trans-Petrified Dear Trans-Petrified You met a guy who is openly bending stereotypical gender norms, and you find that admirable, and now you are surprised (s)he wants to identify as a trans woman? It seems like you are stuck in some pretty strong gender norms yourself, so my advice to you is to start educating yourself. First of all, you need to consider that this person has chosen you as a confidante to what is probably the biggest journey of their life. That’s really a big deal, so please don’t be that person in the very beginning of this process that is prejudiced and closedminded! If you admire the ability to effortlessly play with identity, don’t be part of a system that paints everything and pinks and powder blues. It is totally fair if you feel you can’t engage in any sort of romantic relationship right this moment because you need to re-evaluate your emotions, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a friend and support instead.

It’s been two years, and I want to move in with my boyfriend. I’m tired of the endless planning, the bringing clothes back and forth, and the sleeping alone sometimes. I want to build

a home together, so after two years, isn’t it time? I feel like it’s the next natural step in our relationship to really share our lives like this. My boyfriend keeps saying he wants to wait and that he needs time and space for himself. I guess I’m ready for more commitment, and I’m scared that my boyfriend isn’t, and that he just wants to do this endless dating game. What should I do? Just wait for him to get ready? Or should I move on because things aren’t changing?

So in a sense, it is ok for your boyfriend to not wanting to move in with you just as it is okay for you for wanting to make a home together. The question is; can your differences on this be reconciled? Being in a relationship also means that you get to know each other better and better with time, so you start by engaging in a talk as to why he is closed off to the idea of moving in together. If he is good at talking about other sensitive topics, then it shouldn’t be a problem. If he is unwilling to discuss your future plans, you have some deeper-rooted issues at hand. In that case, you can talk to him about why he is having difficulty even talking about it – it may not solve anything, but you’ll at least get to know him even better.

And that’s the whole point, right? And you’ll see if he is willing to deepen your relationship or not.
