For queer-identifying men, idolizing a female performing artist almost comes with the territory. There’s something about a strong, unashamed, and uncompromising female power in a male-dominated world that simply clicks with the LGBTQ+ community. Peach asked Chris Azzopardi, editor of Q Syndicate, to give us his choices for best songs by women last year – because, let’s face it, he is an authority in the topic, and he has interviewed just about everyone on his list!

Bring My Flowers Now Tanya Tucker Country music legend Tanya Tucker’s elegiac coda from her first album in 10 years, “Bring My Flowers Now” off While I’m Livin’, is a frank reflection of leaving this life, its imagery handled with a gentle hand in the song’s music video.

The video features Tucker riding atop a horse, two young girls flanking her and releasing flowers petals to the streets. They stop at one point, wave goodbye. On her journey, Tucker passes a smiling preacher and a man in a convertible.

Finally, she comes to a halt to share a moment with the co-writer of “Flowers” and While I’m Livin’ producer Brandi Carlile, who’s playing the piano; the out singer-songwriter and the country icon relay a deep mutual respect through a simple tip of their hats and a warm, silent acknowledgement. Then Tucker is on her way.

The video is one of the year’s best, its simplicity the perfect match for the small, heartbreakingly specific details in Tucker and Carlile’s plaintive lyrics about Tucker’s life and its message of living for those you love now. “Don’t spend time, tears, or money on my ol’ breathless body. If your heart is in them flowers, bring ‘em on,” she achingly sings. The years on Tucker’s voice are as life-affirming as the song itself. And these – plus its recent Grammy nomination for Song of the Year – are her flowers. Lovingly, Carlile has brought them to her.

Track Record Miranda Lambert Even Miranda Lambert knows she’s been a little busy with the boys. She mocks her floozy image with dry wit on “Track Record” from her new album Wildcard, owning it and treating it as a shoulder-shrugging fact of her life rather than a rueful self-analysis. I’m obsessed with what might be the Pun of the Year, as Lambert pokes fun at her ways with men, noting that her past is “as checkered as the floor at the diner on Main Street.” She even makes time for a casual dig, namelessly calling out past exes, the “user” and the “loser.” Sonically, there are traces of The War on Drugs in “Track Record,” matching the indie rock band’s signature sound with its hypnotic ’70s-rock-style torrent of glistening guitars and chugging drums. When Lambert sings, “Girls like me don’t mean it but we don’t know better, I got a track record,” you really do have to wonder: Is this the Grindr anthem we’ve all been waiting for?

Love You For Free Cynthia Erivo If church every day was Cynthia Erivo singing “Love You For Free,” my hands would be folded and I’d be at that pew right now. The Broadway star’s sparse, inviting almost prayer of a song is about unconditional love, its warmth radiating through her angelic approach to its gentle, www.peachatl.com

dreamy stride and twinkling sound. The song is among over 30 originals recorded for Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell’s 10-episode Anthem: Homunculus, an alt-autobiography he produced for the Luminary podcast app. Its central character is Ceann Mackay (voiced by Mitchell), whose brain tumor is essentially collective Catholic guilt and shame. Erivo plays Joan the Bishop, the mother of his child. The singer’s greatest contribution, and perhaps the greatest from any of the podcast’s performers, Patti LuPone and Glenn Close among them, is “Love You For Free.” For the world’s outcasts, queers and others who have felt rejected by any church, hearing Erivo sing, “In this world, my child, you have a place,” is like falling into arms that won’t let you go.

Cornelia Street Taylor Swift The lyrical cornerstone of Taylor Swift’s Lover album, “Cornelia Street” shares some DNA with tender story-song “All Too Well,” off her 2012 Red release. Both summon images with the striking vividness of a photograph. The latter happens to be one of Swift’s best written songs – and now so is “Cornelia Street.” The sole writer of the song, Swift is confronting the fear of potential romantic loss, setting the scene over gentle, rolling synths like a movie whose image shifts aspect ratios. She’s riding in the backseat with her man, Londoner Joe Alwyn, drunk in love, maybe, but definitely drunk on “something stronger than the drinks in the bar.”

She’s afraid of losing him. This is serious. The song rolls on like the car she’s singing about, accelerating at the chorus, a flood of sound pouring in; there are car-door and wiper-blade sound effects tucked into Jack Antonoff’s production, which also includes a heartfelt piano break. “Cornelia Street” is like going back to a good book. You discover something new and wonderful every time.

Bible and a .44 Trisha Yearwood Trisha Yearwood turns words on a page into country-music magic, but the singer is at her best when those words tell a story as rich as the one CMA Best New Artist Ashley McBryde wrote for “Bible and a .44.” Yearwood’s finest moment on her latest album, Every Girl, is this weepy, which illustrates the lessons a father has passed down to his child. Made personal by the death of Yearwood’s own dad in 2005, the singer fondly remembers what he looked like (“hair as white as a cottonfield”) and what he taught her (to be perceptive, to love the Lord, to “take what you’ve got and do the best you can”). The guitar softening to a whisper, she reflects on seeing him strumming “this thing,” which “he left it to me like he said he would.”

Before the final chorus, Yearwood reminds us, her warm, no-frills vocals accompanied by Patty Loveless’s soulful harmonies and ad-libs, of how certain things become our most prized possessions: “And if you ask me why it sounds so good, it’s ‘cause I’m holdin’ onto more than strings and wood.”

Higher Love Whitney Houston When Whitney Houston’s unreleased cover of Steve Winwood’s 1986 hit “Higher Love” was released during June Pride Month, I made my gay friends listen to it any way I could. Of note was the time this past summer when I flung open my car doors and cranked this one up, the song’s divinity thumping in a public parking lot. Not only did my closest friends hear, but so did many lucky passersby. I was doing them a favor that day, because Whitney’s never-beforereleased-in-America cover, originally recorded during her I’m Your Baby Tonight sessions and reimagined as a club banger thanks to Norwegian DJ Kygo, is gay dance heaven. She sounds incredible, and Kygo enlivens the song at every turn, taking it beyond its very ’80s origins and into timeless soul-revival territory.

This is exactly the Whitney I want to remember.

Erotic Artist Sam Morris Redefines Masculinity In 2020

Like his predecessor, Sam Morris’ work is stylized, homoerotic fetish art that depicts the quintessential gay male. However, where Tom of Finland celebrated men with extreme muscular body types, often performing aggressive sex acts, Morris’ work tends to focus on the handsome but relatable ‘boy next door’ gay man. “I aim to create an aesthetic that is romantic, yet sexy,” he explains. “My work invites the viewer to fantasize over the man they have a crush on at work, or maybe the one that works at the local coffee shop or the DILF they are secretly following on social media.”

In his art, Morris embraces masculinity while also recognizing a man’s inherent femininity.

“Wearing masculinity as an outfit to conform is not healthy,” he argues.

“Men should express both sides of their personalities freely, without prohibition, how and when they wish.”

His main message is that the body and sex can be explored in a beautifully artistic way without being smutty or cheap.

“I’m not interested in the ‘money shot’ that adult film companies are after,” he says. “For me, it’s more about capturing a man’s vulnerability; photographing the subject so that the viewer sees him as a boyfriend or a lover rather than a piece of meat.”

Currently single, Morris admits he was a hopeless romantic at one time, but the demise of his last few relationships have led to him thinking differently of love. “I am open to many different kinds of romance today. I have a few lovers in my life that I love in different ways, and that’s ok for me right now.”

Sam Morris grew up with three younger sisters, a mom, and dad. He recalls a happy home, although the family was very poor and enjoyed few family outings. Yet, he was taken to see the West End production of Oliver, and after the show, a 7-yearold Sam Morris enthusiastically said to his parents, ‘I want to be in that!’ Two years later, he was.

He became a child actor, attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London (one of the most prestigious theatre schools in the world) and starring in several West End shows, as well 14 | follow us @peachatlmag

as appearing in numerous television and film productions.

He recalls spending a great deal of his spare time in his teens reading fashion magazines, watching art porn, and obsessing over male models. At 18, he began taking pictures and filming himself nude, documenting his emerging sexuality in a conceptualized and romantic way on his own Tumblr page.

Like Tom of Finland in the seventies, Sam Morris had to battle the censors who argued his page depicted overt homosexual acts that were too obscene for mainstream consumption. His page was repeatedly flagged as restricted and taken down. He realized the only way to create the work that he wanted was to build his own website.

He created Sammorris.me and soon after, turned the camera from himself and began photographing nude men. From the beginning, it was important to Morris that the model maintains his own sense of freedom of expression. “I had uncomfortable encounters with photographers. I wanted my set to be a safe space where models could live their porn star fantasies or simply explore a little exhibitionism.”

Morris shoots on the models’ terms; their body = their choice. He does not force sexual encounters on them or on himself. Sex only takes place if it organically feels right and is appropriate in the moment.

“I look at my subject as how somebody would look at their boyfriend from across the bedroom in the morning. That romantic yet vulnerable sensibility that only happens inside your own

home. I want to capture something that is raw but sensitive. I like the quirks and nervousness that goes alongside getting naked in front of a camera for the first time. I have no rules, and I tell my subjects this every time: nothing you can do is wrong, and you can explore as far as you feel comfortable. I am obsessed with light and vibrancy, and so these play a huge part in my aesthetic.”

Morris doesn’t search for the men that are featured in his films and photos; he waits for models to approach him. “That way, it’s on their terms, and I know what they want from the experience. The moment I start approaching people, the power balance starts to become a little tilted.”

He believes soft erotica is experiencing a second coming in the USA and Europe, the sort that was eradicated during the AIDS crisis and taken over by the commercialized porn industry in the 90s. He’s noticed many creative people posting artistic nudes online with the caption ‘Inspired

by Sam Morris,’ and he couldn’t be happier.

“I intend to continue to push the envelope in different areas, using my eye for beauty and my fearless approach to nudity and sex.”

Like Tom of Finland, he is also establishing himself as a leading brander of the male erotic form. His retail shop on his subscription-based website currently sells Sam Morris-stamped hats, hoodies, and tees will soon be expanding to include spirits, cologne, and various fashion accessories.

Baby It’s Cold Outside Are you one of millions who hates the cold weather once the initial novelty of “winter” wears off? I know I am! Come midJanuary until Spring, the fun in Atlanta tends to slip away, other than the occasional local show here and there. Well, to fix that seasonal funk, I teamed up with some good friends to give you some entertaining ways to spend your cold season days!

Snow is rarely a factor in the Atlanta winter, but when it DOES happen, some people hide away in their homes and completely avoid the roads or anywhere past their yard. The next time the follow Mitzi @itsmitzip South is blessed by Snow Queen Elsa’s icy tantrums, don’t miss the opportunity to go: sledding in Piedmont Park (bring a cardboard box and some booze), to a bar crawl from your apartment (and pick up friends who live close by to join you), or even give your Mario Kart skills a test and drive like a maniac down the highways that have never been prepped for snow. All activities guarantee great fun and potential for imminent death. My friend Joshua Jinglings, of Jinglings Auto Insurance, recommends to turn your car music on loud while driving over the speed limit to get that “James Bond” feeling.

“There’s nothing quite like being the man himself, 007.” Joshua states “And don’t worry about your car, when you’re with Jinglings Auto Insurance, you can rest with all the assurance!”

If being a daredevil, or physically adventurous isn’t your cup of tea, follow my friend, Rosella Carrillo’s advice and host! Rosella has an insatiable appetite for sex and the colder weather only makes it worse. She normally doesn’t mind the occasional trip here-and-there, but when it comes to winter weather conditions, she stays put! You can have all the fun of Atlanta right from your home. Just host an old-fashioned two-way, three-way or orgy. The limit is your own imagination. Have the guests BYOB so you can save some money too!

For the poor soul who has to work in winter condition weather, and calling out sick is not an option, my friend and chronically unemployed entrepreneur, Fester Chester IV, advises to use a recently deceased relative to call out. The deed can be tricky, but Fester further explains: if you haven’t used said relative as an excuse before, have photographic evidence of said parting, and entry-level acting skills, it can be pulled off with relative ease. Just don’t post photos of you enjoying your day off on social media.

Another friend of mine, local trainer and OnlyFans model, Kristof Hindenburger, wants to note that cold weather shouldn’t deter anyone from their fleeting New Year’s resolutions or their upcoming Summer bodies. “If you’re not working out, your diet should mainly consist of eating ass and nothing else.” Kristof suggests.

While we bear through this colder weather together, let’s keep our spirits up, asses loose and tabs open. Spring will be just around the corner! I hope you find some fun inspiration from these suggestions - or come up with ideas yourself.
