Hermanus Police Station has made the honour roll, being listed as number 5 on the Top 30 list of police stations across the country with the most arrests for drug-related crimes.
This was revealed in the latest crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2024-’25, released by National Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
This outstanding achievement, said Hermanus Police Station Commander Colonel Gustav Tamboer, is the result of a combination of factors: the tireless efforts and dedication of the station’s Visible Policing (VisPol) and Crime Prevention (CPU) units, regular operations in conjunction with Overstrand Law Enforcement and last, but not least, good cooperation from the communities that provide the police with valuable information.
“Our hot spots are Zwelihle, Hawston and Mount Pleasant where we focus on drug dens and shebeens,” he said. “Targeting shebeens assists with decreasing
contact crimes such as assault, murder, attempted murder and also domestic violence that go hand in hand with alcohol abuse.
“Focusing on drug dens and other drug-related crimes is important when it comes to property-related crimes because drug users often turn to housebreaking and theft to finance their drug habit. By focusing on these problem areas we also address the bigger crime picture.”
PARTNERSHIPS ARE KEY
He added that good partnerships play a crucial role in crime-fighting efforts.
“We are deeply appreciative of the community that provides us with information about shebeens, drug dens, illegal firearms, ammunition and such. We are also grateful for the assistance of Overstrand law enforcement’s various units, including its K9 Unit, during the execution of crime-fighting operations.”
Colonel Mbuyiseli Mtingane, the Acting
Overberg District Commissioner, reported that there has been improvements with regard to the category: crimes detected as result of police action.
“We are doing much better in this regard. Several factors have contributed to this, including higher police visibility and blue-light patrols, which serve as a deterrent and the fact that station commanders are now also deployed over weekends.
“A word of thanks to our communities and the law enforcement departments of the various municipalities for their assistance, especially the Overstrand law enforcement unit for assisting us with all its resources. Thank you also to the traffic officials who have assisted us with arrests for driving under the influence.”
SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES
The Overberg District's statistics for the period January 2025-March 2025 show a positive increase of 46,5% for crimes
detected as result of police action compared to the same period in 2024. This includes arrests for drug-related crimes that are up by 632 cases from 1 298 in the period January-March 2024 to 1 930 in the same period in 2025.
In the first quarter of the year the number of murders in the Overberg District declined by four cases compared to the same period in 2024, while sexual offences dropped from 104 cases during this period in 2024 to 85 cases from January-March 2024. Contact crimes, said the Acting District Commissioner, remains a concern. “There were fewer murders across the district, but every loss of life is tragic and a concern,” Mtingane stated. “The same applies to sexual offences because the victim has been violated in a very personal way.”
Commercial crimes seem to be on the rise across the district with most police stations recording a spike in this subcategory that includes fraud and online scams. Stanford and Napier were the only police stations where a decrease in commcercial crimes was recorded.

Nathaniel “Tony” Kruger 4 September 1965 – 2 Junie 2025
Rus in vrede, Tony Kruger.

From page 1. Common robberies across the district were 11 counts higher than the same period in 2024, while robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 13 cases from 105 from January to March 2024 to 92 cases in the same period in 2025. Mtingane expressed concern about extortion, a crime category he believes is underreported.
“People tend to not report extortion because they fear for their safety due to threats and violence. We want to urge victims to report such cases so we can address it. If you do not
want to report it to your local police station you can call the toll-free number 080 031 4444 or the District Operations Command Centre on 082 302 8863.” Another important issue the Acting District Commissioner felt strongly about is restoring the communities’ faith in the police. “We urge people to please report any police official who is involved with criminal activities. Once the public sees that we are serious about dealing with such matters it will help to restore their faith, trust and confidence in the police. You can do this by calling the district office on 082 302 8863.”

Five suspects allegedly involved in an armed robbery at the Hermanus Post Office were arrested within a short space of time thanks to the good cooperation between law enforcement agencies in the Overstrand.
Colonel Gustav Tamboer, station commander of the Hermanus Police, confirmed that the suspects were arrested in the Kleinmond area by members of Overstrand Law Enforcement’s K9 Unit within an hour of the robbery being reported in Hermanus.
Tamboer thanked the members of the Overstrand Law Enforcement K9 Unit for their swift response. He added: “This was indeed one of the best arrests ever made in a short space of time after the incident occurred.”
The police were informed of the robbery at the post office in Main Road, Hermanus, at approximately 13:35 on Tuesday 3 June. Three men armed with firearms reportedly entered the premises, threatened the postal workers and
demanded the keys to the safe.
“They took all the cash from the safe and reportedly tied the workers’ hands with cable ties. The armed robbers allegedly also demanded one of the workers’ car keys.”
After information about the incident was shared with other role players, members of the Overstrand Law Enforcement K9 unit reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the Kleinmond area.
“They pulled over the vehicle and searched it as well as the occupants. This led to the discovery of cash, two firearms, ammunition and other items that were all seized. The suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Hermanus Police Station,” Tamboer reported.
Lt Col Nickey Steyn, commander of the detectives branch, confirmed that the suspects appeared in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on charges of business robbery, the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and the possession of stolen goods.
They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 19 June.

The Overstrand Municipality reported its law enforcement officers arrested the suspect near the Klipheuwel Wind Farm outside Caledon in the early hours of Sunday 8 June, after chasing the suspects since the previous night when the theft of nearly 1 km of copper cable in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley was reported. Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill said the Overstrand Municipal Law Enforcement Task Teams and K9 Unit, CU Live, Afriforum and police officers joined forces to track down the culprits. “The District Operational Command Centre (DOCC) also assisted by coordinating the operation,” O’Neill added. Their joint efforts paid off on Sunday 8 June when Overstrand Municipality law enforcement officers pulled the vehicle to the side of the road near the wind turbines outside Caledon, just after 05:00. One suspect was arrested and handed over to the Hermanus police. The search continued for three others. Lieutenant-Colonel Nickey Steyn, commander of the Hermanus Detectives Unit, confirmed the suspect had made his first appearance in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Monday 9 June. The case was postponed for further investigation.
The relationship between landlords and tenants can be complex, particularly regarding additional services not explicitly covered in lease agreements. A recent Western Cape High Court ruling confirmed that landlords cannot impose extra charges for services or remove existing ones without tenant consent unless stipulated in the lease agreement or agreed upon later.
A lease agreement is a binding contract in which the landlord provides the tenant with temporary use and enjoyment of a property in exchange for rent. This includes access to the premises and, in some cases, additional services such as cleaning or security. However, any changes to these services, including new fees, must be agreed upon by both parties.
This principle was affirmed in Bodies Under Construction CC and Others v Permasolve Investments (Pty) Ltd (19457/2023) [2023] ZAWCHC 326. In this case, a gym had been leasing premises from Permasolve for over a decade. After Permasolve installed a generator, the gym used it during power outages at no extra charge. Later, Permasolve attempted to impose an additional fee
and threatened disconnection. The court ruled that the gym had a quasi-possessory right to use the generator and that Permasolve’s actions unlawfully disrupted the gym’s possession of the premises. The landlord was ordered to restore the gym’s access to the generator. For more on this subject visit our website: www.vorsteyn.co.za or make an obligation-free consultation with us at 028 313 0033.

Colder temperatures, especially early in the morning when most people leave for work and school, have everyone shivering and reaching for their warmest clothes.
But what about those who aren’t as fortunate as others in owning the necessary gear to keep them snug and warm?
With this in mind the Rotary Club of Stanford has once again set its Winter School Clothes Drive in action.
The Rotarians appeal to the community to assist with donations of school clothes and/or cash to help ensure no child will have to suffer the cold and wet during these winter months.
Rotarian Lana Coates, in her appeal, said providing children with a warm school uniform plays a vital role in ensuring they do not miss school and complete their education.
“One of the reasons children don’t want to attend school is their school uniform. Whether these clothes are too big, too small, torn or simply non-existent, children are teased and bullied because of it. To avoid that, some of them don’t attend school.”
Hence, the Winter School Clothes Drive launched by the Rotary Club of Stanford. Coates appealed to the public and businesses to assist, adding the need is particularly big this year “due to an influx of children.”
The cost per child is around R300. Deposits can be made using the following details: Rotary Club of Stanford; FNB Hermanus (Branch code 250655); A/c No.: 62355979695. Use the word “Clothes” and your name as reference. Coates can be contacted on 082 216 4398.

When Carlos and Margarita Villalba from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico walked into the Stellenbosch Tourism Bureau 18 years ago and saw a poster advertising the Classics for All music festival in Greyton and Genadendal the die was cast, not only for a long relationship with the festival, but with South Africa generally.
In Greyton people fondly refer to the Villalbas as “The Mexicans”. An enquiry at the local tourism office about the possible whereabouts of the Mexicans was promptly answered with “They are having breakfast across the road. She is wearing a beautiful-coloured outfit and you cannot miss them.” And this was indeed the case.
After a magnificent performance of Cupid’s Arrow, a show presenting love songs from the 17th century, Hermanus Times spoke to Carlos and Margarita about their yearly visit to the Classics for All. “One of the things we deeply care about is culture, so when we saw the advertisement for the Classics all

those years ago we immediately came to Greyton.
“Now, when we come to South Africa for our yearly three-month holiday we always start in Greyton with the Classics for All,” said Margarita. “Greyton opened the heart of South Africa for us. When we first came we thought it would be a once-off experience and, as we love travelling, we thought the following year we would visit another country. But, as I said, Classics for All opened our hearts to this fantastic country, to other values, to freedom and justice, and a dream that most other countries have already lost.”
“The spirit of South Africa captured us,” said Carlos. “We are in love with your country, with your culture. For us Mandela performed a miracle. For us it is the best country in the world. I wish all countries had your spirit, your magnificent way of life.” Margarita added that she loved the peace of Greyton and the warmth of the people. That Carlos and Margarita are well-known in Greyton is evident. Quite a few of the musicians Hermanus Times spoke to said they remembered them well from previous concerts.

Arrieskraal Primary and Umyezo Wama Apile Primary School are among the 1 000 beneficiaries of the 2025 AVBOB Road to Literacy campaign, in collaboration with Oxford University Press South Africa (OUPSA) that were announced recently.
The campaign is a nationwide trolley library initiative that continues to improve access to books and addresses the ongoing challenges of low literacy and numeracy levels at foundation phase by providing young learners with culturally and linguistically relevant materials in all 11 official written languages.
Each mobile library includes 500 OUPSA books selected to support literacy and numeracy skills in alignment with the CAPS curriculum.
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, remarked: “This initiative is a powerful example of what can be achieved through partnerships. It addresses a pressing national priority, the development of foundational literacy and numeracy, while supporting policy frameworks aimed at integrating diversity into school curricula. It does so in a way that honours South Africa’s linguistic and cultural richness, ensuring that no child is left behind.”
Karen Simpson, MD of OUPSA, added that the partnership reflected the organisation’s core belief that literacy is a foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity. “Access to books in a learner’s mother tongue has a profound impact on their ability to grasp foundational concepts, stay engaged in the classroom and remain in the education system.”
Each trolley library is valued at R57 000, bringing the total investment for the 2025 campaign to R57 million. Along with books that promote reading for enjoyment, they include materials designed to develop numeracy, making the campaign one of the few national projects focused on both reading and mathematics at the foundational phase.
Carl van der Riet, CEO of AVBOB Group, said that although the campaign had grown substantially, its original purpose is to provide access to quality education materials, dignity and hope for a better future. “Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of future learning and

the means by which children are empowered to shape their own lives.
“Through the AVBOB Road to Literacy campaign we aim to support underserved communities in a way that uplifts and empowers them, while respecting their dignity and fostering lasting impact.”
Gugu Ndebele, Executive Director of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, said: “We believe education is the most powerful tool for changing a learners’ future. Literacy unlocks confidence, agency and opportunity. We are inspired by this initiative, and hope it will ignite a lifelong love of reading in every child who encounters one of these trolley libraries.”

It is one of the most challenging ultra-marathons in the world, and for many athletes it is a race on their bucket list.
Athletes from across the Overberg participated in the Comrades Marathon on Sunday and cannot stop talking about their experience.
It was a “down run” starting at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban. The race distance was approximately 89 km.
Tete Dijana was the first man to cross the finish line of the 98th Comrades Marathon 2025, completing the course in a time of 05:25:28, ahead of Piet Wiersma, who won the race last year. Dijana has now claimed his third Comrades Marathon title, having previously won in 2022 and 2023, before finishing 14th last year.
In the women’s race the sensational Gerda Steyn triumphed once again, securing her fourth victory with a time of 05:51:19. Steyn remains the current record holder for both the “up” and “down” runs of the Comrades Marathon. This year saw a record number of participants, with 22 670 qualified entrants (up from 20 574 in 2024) setting off from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
The Comrades Marathon is the oldest and one of the most challenging and respected ultramarathons in the world, covering a distance of almost 90 km. One of Whalers Athletic Club’s members Christo Vlotman described his experience. “How do you comprehend months of training, sacrifices, earlymorning good weather, bad weather and conquering the gruelling 90 km ultimate human race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban?
“Thanks to God for being with me all the way on this journey; on my own none of this would have been possible. My wife, Alzeen, for allowing me to live my dream and the sacrifices that go with it. You are the Comrade in every aspect. To everyone that contributed financially, without your assistance none of this would have been possible. From the bottom of my heart thanks very much. This one was for all of you.
‘Challenging, but we enjoyed it’
To my Whalers Athletics Club and the ‘No sympathy’ running group, thanks for all the runs and helping me to be prepared the best I could be.You all are legends.” It was his fifth Comrades and third down run and his times improved every time. “In 2018 I ran it in 10:19, in 2023 09:46 and 2025 09:13. This year was also my personal best and what the mind believes the body can achieve, even doing 10 push ups after just running 90 km.”
• The Whalers Athletics Club results:
Nicholas Brits (08:22:28); Marelie Davel (08:44:34); Dewald Venter (08:48:06); Christo Vlotman (09:13:42); Helen McGuirk (10:12:30); Shane Mullis (10:12:30); Johann Kotze (10:18:17); M. Janhi (10:24:04); Marc Rolfe (10:25:17); Mariska Erasmus (10:42:27) and Riana Volschenk (11:34:58).
The athletes from Hangklip Athletics Club who participated in the Comrades found it just as challenging but enjoyed it. JP Duvenage who ran the race in 08:39:39 said: “I ran my goal time, but
it was definitely the hardest one of the six. Overall it was an amazing and humbling experience to take part in this Ultimate Human Race.”
Japie Swanepoel who ran it in 10:10:55 said the route was long and hard, “but the supporters on the road make it possible to complete 90 km.”
Marnus Hattingh completed the Comrades in 10:34:38 and said the enthusiastic crowd along the road is an experience, “but 90 km is just not a stone’s throw away.”
