I hadn’t planned to spend Christmas alone, but after my ex ran off to Bali for “selfdiscovery,” I found myself in a Vermont ski lodge, tipsy on peppermint schnapps and scrolling Grindr.

Enter Eli flannel, jawline, and promises of “fireplace cuddles and bad decisions.” Perfect. An hour later, we were in Eli’s Airbnb. Things were heating up until Eli’s phone buzzed:

“Mom (Landlord)”.

“Wait,” I said. “Your mom owns this place?”

Before Eli could answer, the door burst open. There stood his mom, in a bathrobe, holding gingerbread cookies like a weapon.

“Eli,” she snapped, “could you at least pick someone who looks less traumatized?”

I grabbed my coat and fled through the snow, half-dressed and mortified I ended the night sleeping in the hotel lobby beside a fake Christmas tree.

In the morning, a text from Eli:

“Mom says you left your scarf She liked you ”

Miles smiled and typed back:

“Tell her I’m seeing someone new me ” And that was the first time I actually laughed all Christmas.
