Pyrite – aka fool’s gold

Pyrite, or Iron Pyrite, is an iron sulfide mineral also known as fool’s gold. It is a mineral with a metallic luster and a pale brass-yellow hue that gives it a superficial resemblance to gold, hence the well-known nickname of fool’s gold.

It was also used by dishonest mine owners to salt their mines for the purpose of convincing people they were still gold producers. The color has also led to the nicknames brass, brazzle and Brazil. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek pyrites, “of fire” or “in fire,” in turn from “pyr,” “fire.”

In ancient Roman times, this name was applied to several types of stone that would create sparks when struck against steel; Pliny the Elder described one of them as brassy, almost certainly a reference to what we now call pyrite.

Despite being nicknamed fool’s gold, pyrite is sometimes found in association with small quantities of gold.

Pyrite enjoyed brief popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms, notably the wheel lock, where the cock of the gun held a lump of pyrite against a circular file to strike the sparks needed to fire the gun. Pyrite is used to make marcasite jewelry, made from small faceted pieces of pyrite that is often set in silver and was popular in the Victorian era. Marcasite jewelry does not contain marcasite, which is a medieval term that encompassed both pyrite and the mineral now called marcasite. Marcasite is similarly metallic in appearance, but it is so unstable that alone is unsuitable for jewelry use. Just why the name of this mineral has been appropriated for selling pyrite in jewelry is not clear. But it has been suggested that the name has more “sales appeal.” Pyrite is distinguishable from native gold by its hardness, brittleness and crystal form. Natural gold tends

to be irregularly shaped, whereas pyrite comes as either cubes or multifaceted crystals.

Pyrite was highly prized by the Incas of Peru as well as the Aztecs of southern Mexico as a healing stone of magic, and was polished into mirrors for gazing and divination. While one side was usually polished flat, the other was highly convex and frequently carved with special symbolic markings. Before the 1800’s, it was favored as a decorative stone, carved into rosettes, shoe buckles, rings, snuff boxes and other ornaments, and was extremely popular in England during the Victorian Age for its use in jewelry. Pyrites biggest use occurred during World War II when it was mined as a source of sulfur for producing sulfuric acid used in industry.

Some cultures believe that pyrite is a protective, shielding

stone and is excellent to wear or carry as an amulet to deflect harm and danger. It is especially helpful when one is away from home or performing hazardous work. It inspires creativity in art, mathematics, science, and many disciplines especially those that recognize the inherent perfection and harmonious symmetry of nature and the universe. It stirs the qualities of ambition, commitment and perseverance, and is an ideal stone for students.

Building stone containing pyrite tends to stain brown as the pyrite oxidizes. This problem appears to be significantly worse if any marcasite is present. The presence of pyrite used to make concrete can lead to severe deterioration of a structure as the pyrite oxidizes. In early 2009, problems with Chinese drywall imported into the United States after

Hurricane Katrina were attributed to the oxidation of pyrite. In the United States, in Canada, and most recently in Ireland, where it was used as under floor infill, pyrite contamination has caused major structural damage. Modern tests for these materials now certify that they are free of pyrite.

Pyrite, which is iron sulfide, is the most common of the sulfide minerals. It is used principally as a source of sulfur dioxide for the manufacture of sulfuric acid.

Pyrite occurs in numerous localities throughout the world. Large amounts of small pyrite crystals come from Peru. Large perfect cubic crystals come from Spain. Excellent pyrite crystal are found on the island of Elba, Italy, which is a classic locality. A locality which has recently brought interesting shaped, complex pyrite crystals to the market is Arusha, Tanzania.

It is also found in England, Germany and Mexico. In the United States, fine localities abound. Pyrite is found in Colorado, Utah, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Frontier educator Horace Hale receives new honor

The University of Colorado-Boulder has recently instituted an Esteemed Scholars Program to honor select groups of entering resident (in state) freshmen. The awards are named in honor of the university’s first three presidents: Joseph Sewall, Horace M. Hale and James H. Baker.

The President Horace M. Hale Award is a four-year renewable scholarship for $3,500 a year, totaling $14,000.

To qualify students must have a 4.0 GPA and a 31 ACT score or a 1350 SAT score.

Other honors in our state have accrued through the years to the Hales, father and son. Objects as varied as a mountain peak, a Denver street and an Army WWII ski training camp have been named for them. (Horace’s son Irving was a Spanish, American war hero and a Denver tramway system builder.)

Horace Hale came to the Territory of Colorado and its low humidity for his health. (He may have also had a bit of “gold fever,” perhaps inherited from his father who had spent two years in California prospecting and mining.) Horace had been admitted to the bar in Michigan but delayed starting a law practice because of his chronic bronchitis. When his brother Albert returned from a visit to the new gold fields in the Rockies, he suggested Horace come west for his respiratory condition. Horace returned with Albert to Central City, arriving in October 1863. He began working in Henry Teller’s law office, now standing across from the opera house, but Horace thought outdoor work would help his lungs more so he began working in freighting and mining.

Our low humidity restored the health of the former schoolteacher and he began teaching again, in Central City. Soon Horace was promoted to principal and served until 1873, when he became Territorial Superintendent

Horace, lower left, was the school principal in the early 1870s. The school was built in 1870 and Horace was probably the first principal as well as the principal in the period of 1877 – 1887.

Horace thus became the last territorial and the first state holder of that office. In January of 1877 he returned to Central as principal and stayed 10 years.a Horace was an accomplished multitasker. After 1878, he simultaneously held the offices of Regent of the State University, later called the University of Colorado, mayor of Central City, principal of the Central City School and superintendent of schools for Gilpin County.

When President Sewall resigned from the University of Colorado in 1887, his fellow regents urged Horace to accept the presidency. In accepting, he became the second president

of the flagship university. The Central City school he left had 415 pupils registered at that time; at CU there were only 136 students.

During his tenure as CU president (1887 – 1892), Horace believed his top priority was to build public support for the university. He cajoled legislators into visiting the campus and lobbied them to include state funding for the school in the budget. He also began to develop the barren campus, planting

700 trees and building sidewalks through the mud. During his presidency, more buildings were construct-

ed on the small campus and it was he who suggested that a dam be built in the ravine between the President’s House and Old Main, forming what is now called Varsity Lake.

During his term, tuition was free to Coloradans and expenses were around $200 a year. The student population increased so much that afternoon classes began, 23 degrees were conferred, and baseball and football teams were formed. (The football team lost its first home game to the School of Mines 103 – 0.) More faculty, including a full-time librarian, was hired. When he resigned, the building under construction at that time was named Hale Scientific Building.

Horace remained active in civic affairs after he left CU. He organized the State Teachers Association and served as its president for two terms. In Central City, he was president of the Mining Exchange, a director of the Illinois Mine and an incorporator of the Central City Opera Exchange. In Denver he served as President of the Charity Organization of Denver, Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of the Knights of Honor and as an officer in many other organizations. He died in Denver in 1901 from heart problems and is buried in Fairmont Cemetery.

For the third time this campaign season, backers of Amendment 68, a controversial amendment to bring casino gambling to the Denver metro area, have been forced to either pull and, in one case, revise deceptive advertising that attempts to manufacture support from the education community where none exists.

Proponents of Amendment 68 were exposed today by an investigative report in the Highlands Ranch Herald that showed that “teacher” Brooke Booth, featured prominently in early ads by the campaign, is ac-

tually a real estate agent who registered with Douglas County Schools last year as a substitute teacher.

According to the Herald, Booth’s husband used to work for Sean Tonner, a political consultant on the Yes on 68 payroll.

“It’s unprecedented, to have to pull an ad three times in the same campaign,” said Bill Cadman, chairman of the No on 68 campaign. “It’s hard to know what to believe when it comes to anything claimed or presented by the YES on 68 side.”

First, the campaign was forced to replace advertising that mislead viewers into thinking that an individual not connected to Mesa School District 51 was representing the school district in supporting the scheme. Next, the Colorado Office

of Legislative Legal Services issued a cease and desist letter on behalf of the Colorado Office of the State Auditor, requiring the campaign to pull advertising that misrepresented the content of a report issued by the state auditor. “The company behind these deceptions wants us to believe that they will work with the state and local authorities to resolve the numerous loose ends and vague details contained in their amendment,” Cadman said. “We can’t even trust them to create advertising that isn’t deceptive. How can we trust them to work in our state’s best interest?”

olorado is famed for towering peaks, but the eastern one-third of our state is horizontal.

Our Eastern Plains are often overlooked as a vast vacant space, but the region is an important part of the Colorado story and gaining a renewed appreciation for its agricultural abundance.

Eastern Colorado is part of the High Plains, together with west Kansas, west Nebraska and west New Mexico stretching from the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles into lower Wyoming and South Dakota. And the High Plains form the western edge of the enormous Great Plains that extend from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River between Mexico and Canada. Eastern Colorado is defined by its two major rivers, the Arkansas and the South Platte, each contributing to agriculture enterprise.

Viewed as vacant today, Colorado’s eastern plains were a busy place during the earliest settlement of this region. Two hundred years ago, the plains were the domain of the nomadic Cheyenne and Arapaho, who subsisted by hunting the enormous buffalo herds. Spanish explorers and conquerors, who had come north from present-day Mexico in the 1600s, had introduced the horse to these native peoples. Mounted on horseback, the plains tribes ranged further and more freely.

Trappers, traders and explorers followed either the South Platte or the Arkansas River west, departing from St. Louis or Kansas City. In 1820, the Stephen H. Long exploration party followed the South Platte (Niinéniiniicíihéhe’ in Arapaho) upriver to where it emerges from the Waterton Canyon, then turned south along the Front Range to Pikes Peak.

The explorer’s mapmaker labeled the empty arid region “The Great American Desert,” and Lt. Long proclaimed the area “uninhabitable for people depending upon agriculture for their subsistence.”

Fur trappers found the Rocky Mountain waterways thriving with beaver. Fur traders developed trading posts and forts on the Arkansas and the South Platte and their tributaries: adobe-brick structures used more for commerce than defense.

Beginning in the 1820s, the Santa Fe Trail passed through southeastern Colorado bringing goods to the trading centers at Taos and Santa Fe. Discovery of gold in 1858, where the Cherry Creek and the South Platte merge, sparked a major rush across the plains. Thousands of wealth seekers crossed the 600- to 700-

mile expanse “by hoof, foot or stage.” Most followed the South Platte River road west from Nebraska Territory. Wagon trains of prairie schooners also departed from Kansas City, Westport and Lawrence over the lesser-traveled Smoky Hill Trail (the mid-point nicknamed “Starvation Trail”) towards beckoning Pikes Peak.

The fledgling villages of Auraria and Denver City (the latter described as a “huddle of log cabins, every other building a saloon”) sprang up near the Cherry Creek gold strike. Soon, the start of the Civil War reversed the influx from the East, but the Homestead Act of 1862 opened the door for cultivation of the plains region.

The Indian War of 1864 temporarily stalled immigration and settlement in Colorado Territory. The tribes cut telegraph wires, attacked wagon trains and burned Julesburg to the ground. The Sand Creek Massacre in November 1864 contributed the end of the Indians’ presence on the Colorado plains. Tribes were forced onto reservations. The demise of the buffalo herds and construction of the trans-continental railroad helped complete American conquest of the region.

Colorado’s Eastern Plains became a livestock corridor during the 1880s. Massive cattle drives followed the famed Goodnight-Loving Trail, bringing beef-on-the-hoof from arid Texas north to Montana’s grassy pastures. Farming, barbed-wire fencing and several wicked winters put an end to the cattle drives and huge ranching enterprises.

The plains became an opportunity rather than obstacle by the 1890s, as a “land rush” of homesteaders spread across eastern Colorado. Many families arrived in a train boxcar loaded with all their belongings. These land seekers included many European immigrants, such as Scandavanians and the Germans from Russia, who dreamt of property ownership unachievable in their homeland. The settlers plowed and planted the plains and prairie, and they built dugouts, “soddies” and shanties to “prove up” their homestead claim.

In 1909, the Enlarged Homestead Act spurred further settlement by doubling the size of homestead claims from 160 to 320 acres in arid western regions. Farming flourished on the High Plains during the 1910s thanks to a short spurt of wet summers. Agricultural demand spiked during World War I, but afterwards over-production shrank the profits for food crops, especially corn and grain.

the High Plains. Homesteading and farming removed prairie grasses, exposing the topsoil to ferocious winds that created the Dust Bowl calamity.

During this era of agriculture, railroads played a critical role in settling eastern Colorado. By 1876 statehood, Colorado had several major lines connecting us to the East. The transcontinental railroad skirted Colorado but an extension of the Union Pacific connected Denver and Cheyenne. The Santa Fe railroad crossed the Kansa-rado border in 1873 and followed the Arkansas River west through the fertile river valley. The Missouri Pacific laid tracks across the plains east from St. Louis. In state, the Colorado & Southern Railway served the sugar beet industry in Longmont and Loveland and Fort Collins. Local spurs also cropped up for lumber, sugar beet processing

and quarrying.

Motorized transportation kept pace too. Farm-to-market roads built for wagons became paved for automobiles. A coast-to-coast highway completed in the 1920s brought motorists across the plains and into the Rocky Mountains. Some local roads were paved as WPA p rojects during the Great Depression. By the 1960s, several interstate highways spanned the Great Plains.

Despite modest precipitation, eastern Colorado is a major agricultural area, relying upon the underlying High Plains aquifer as a principal water source. Cultivation proved challenging, achieved by dryland farming, irrigation and water pumped from the aquifer. Traditional crops included corn, hay, sugar beets, melons and broom straw.

mains farmland today, with many small family-owned operations, some in the same family for generations. Major field crops include corn, wheat, millet, oats, soybeans, barley and sunflowers. Stock raising consists of beef, pork, poultry and dairy farming. Cities like Greeley and La Junta became agricultural hubs with feedlots, slaughter houses and meat packing plants as well as shipping capacity to urban centers elsewhere.

A wonderful legacy of plains farming and ranching is agricultural architecture. Windmills, barns and stock corrals accentuate the barren landscape. Historic farmsteads, ranches, granges and one-room schoolhouses – often abandoned – stand out on the empty plains.

Grain elevators cluster by the railroad tracks, holding harvested grain for bulk shipment to wholesalers, exporters and local flourmills, feed lots and breweries. Each town has its spindly-legged tower that stores water pumped from the aquifer for businesses and residents’ use.

In today’s local-focused marketplace, regional agriculture is again important. Farmers markets thrive from May into October. Agri-tourism is a popular trend with locally cultivated pick-your-own pumpkin patches, vegetable gardens and orchards. In September, thousands of bicyclists ride the 176-mile loop through Fort Morgan, Brush, and Wiggins for the second annual Pedal the Plains event that culminates in Sugar Beet Days in Sterling.

Instead of The Real Housewives of New Jersey—or Orange County, Beverly Hills, New York or Atlanta—we’ll have The Real Housewives of Colorado. It will be me much more . . . well . . . real. And instead of Keeping up with the Kardashians, how about Keeping up with the Rosbys. Or maybe not. We aren’t that hard to keep up with.

And getting ahead of us would put an end to the show. I can’t see me wanting to be on reality show anyway. Putting the details of my life out there week after week isn’t really my thing. Oh, wait.
