The Last Hand

Know when to hold them

We hope that our readers enjoyed the recent blackjack review of Central City and Black Hawk games by Maverick Sharp. Prior to Maverick’s keen insight, I had already discussed the blackjack

Where tables only pay 6 to 5 on single deck games there is little player action. Bosses don’t like it and it should be changed. I like the 3 to 2 traditional pay out on a blackjack on one deck or six.

Playing a single deck, the dealer is shuffling the cards a great deal. We all have a love/hate relationship with dealers and most players, including myself, are superstitious about these folks.

One is winning and a new dealer comes along and suddenly the cards change. The dealer does shuffle the cards and each person probably does it slightly different. Many larger casinos now use Shuffle Master machines that always keep a red or black deck ready to be dealt. This saves the dealer time and allows the dealer to play many more

hands an hour, making up for the cost of using the leased Shuffle Master equipment that can only be leased, not purchased by casinos.

The single deck is only about two-thirds of a deck because the dealer never deals all of the cards; if you notice they have a gap in the cardholder and they never deal past the yellow cut card.

If a dealer thinks a player is counting cards they can do a shorter shuffle that takes away any card count advantage. Remember, the dealer can benefit from the face cards as much as the players.

I’ve never believed in card counting, but occasionally one can spot cards being dealt that might mean more face cards on the horizon. I like to have player’s leave their hit cards up so others can see whether it is a 10 or less.

The best way to make any money playing blackjack is to have a streak where letting the bet ride might mean four or five straight winning hands. Certainly the dealers do this to the players, so once in awhile a streak comes along and the players win. Otherwise, it is a seesaw battle of winning and losing and hard to even win two hands in a row.

mum bet of $5, the player can bet up to $100 and even play multiple hands. That’s enough action for most folks and there are different theories about changing the bet or sticking with the same bet, time after time.

A good sign of a winning table is to have splits and double downs. These hands played properly give the odds to the players.

If one can increase a bet against a dealer up card six, it just makes sense to double down.

In my opinion, never double against a dealer’s hand showing a 10.

Back to the dealers, it is just good business to tip these folks who stand on their feet for long hours dealing those cards and attempting to be pleasant to all players. Get them in the game, place a bet for them and you’ll find this is great karma for you and the dealer.

If players won all the time we would own the casinos, so be thankful that we don’t.
