Are you sick and tired of that phrase ‘The New Normal’?! I know I am. And as much overexposure this has got, it is certainly true that we will all have to adjust ourselves to this post (well kind of) COVID-19 world. As a magazine, we are all about entertainment and the gaming industry lies at the core of it. A complementary vertical to this is travel as we see many people combine their vacations with casino destinations to indulge both their passions. So we thought as we come to the end of this (mostly) forgettable year, it would be nice to hit the reset button and reawaken things like travel which have been dormant for the population at large. And given how Goa is the nerve centre for tourism and gaming in the country, we thought what better place to start than this. We bring you a comprehensive look at the many varied facets of this sunny state and its many charms. Whether you are a foodie, explorer, gaming or adventure sports enthusiast or interested in arts and culture, Goa has something to satiate every appetite. While Goa is the focus of this edition, obviously we’ve had several interesting things happening in the gaming and sports world. On the gaming front, casinos opened up in the state and welcomed guests from across the country with some exciting cash game offerings. Chennai Super Kings dominated (not for the first time) IPL 2021 while the mighty Aussies won their first World T20 title! Till next time, stay safe and keep crushing!

Mapping Goan Gastronomy By Manthra Koliyer
T
he Goa you hear and know of is a treat for the eyes, melancholy for the ears, and a haven for those who are a slave of their taste buds. Goa boasts of cuisine that evokes instant association to nostalgia, comfort and ignites a tinge of spark. While the predominant association is to beer and Bebinca cakes, there is much more than that. The Goan cuisine is a confluence of cultures that came in contact over centuries, such as Portuguese, African, Brazilian, Arab, French, Konkani, Chinese, Malaysian and Burma. This intermix of cultures and distinct flavours have made Goan food the perfect blend of subtlety and richness.

Once A Land Of Gods And Fossils... By Akash Mishra
W
hether the Gods (Parashurama, as the majority believes) or any natural calamity/activity reclaimed Goa or sent the seas rolling back 12,000 years ago - is a matter up for discussion. The histories and mysteries around it are all safely hidden behind the closed doors of Goa’s heritage sites. The intermingling cultures brought in by the merchants, saints, traders, and rulers from across the Arabian Sea have woven many separate community strands into a single tapestry. Beyond that hypnotic and frivolous mask and speckled oceanic pearls, let’s take a quick journey through the historicity of Goa. Speckles of Goan Community Seen here are the Lamanis, or as popularly known Banjaras, the nomadic clan who are now part of Goa’s vibrant mainstream resident community, have lived in Goa for many decades. Belonging to the Indo-Aryan group, their native dialect is ‘gor bali’; though, you will be surprised to hear some of them speak fluent English and Russian! A portion of their floating population works in the tourism industry, selling beach accessories and souvenirs during the summer.

njoying Goa? We’re sure you are! With so much that the coastal state offers, it’s rare to get bored or not have fun. Since we’re talking about all things Goa and boisterous, why not talk about one spirited aspect that Goa is slightly missing on – esports! The First Phase Goa remains a little secluded regarding the esports scene. The football-loving state is yet to host esports as a sport vigorously. But when we say the state is comparatively behind the rest of the

country, we do not mean it is still unknown to the game of skill. The state houses a decent amount of exceptional esports players, esports organisations and teams. The Promotors Clive Fernandes, Cofounder of TST Esports, one of the pioneers’ esports organisations in Goa, comparing esports to football, says, “Today, the kind of love and acceptance that football receives made it reach its peak in Goa. But there was a time when it was just at its starting stage, only with a few local players. Esports, right 2021
now, is exactly where football was; there are players, there are teams, but very few tournaments are happening.” Educational institutes in Goa play a significant role in promoting esports tournaments. Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Goa hosts one of Goa’s biggest and prominent esports tournaments ‘MATKA’. The esports tournament is held every year as a part of their annual technical fest ‘Quark.’ The event features esports titles like DOTA, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)
ESPORTS
Things to know about Quark • Open to teams and players across India • Online eliminators will be held in January 2022. • Offline finale will happen at the Quark Fest The free-spirited culture of Goa is open to all that is unconventional and fun. It won’t be long until we see some of the top and massive esports tournaments happening in Goa, with domestic and international players flying to the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ to participate in these tournaments. Clive Fernandes, Co-founder, TST Esports and FIFA. The tournament has received sponsorships and support from top brands like Asus, Nodwin and more in the past and features prize pools in lakhs. Priyanshu Apurva, Event Head, Quark, tells us, “MATKA is one of the most supported and anticipated events out of the 20-25 events, hosted at Quark. Owing to massive participation of more than 60 local teams and to promote esports on our homeground, two Goan teams will have the opportunity to directly advance.”
