An El Nino taking shape on the Pacific might help ease conditions in California, but 77 per cent of the state is bone dry, listed as experiencing extreme or exceptional drought conditions.

It’s these low water years that scientists and politicians around the world are trying to prepare for as climate change rocks our understanding of what life looks like on this planet.

“You look at what’s happening in California, you look at what’s happened in Australia and you see that the places where people have succeeded are the places where people were proactive and set up in advance…places that had metering, places that had water conservation programs,” said Anna Warwick Sears, executive director of the Okanagan

Basin Water Board.

Wednesday morning mayors from up and down the valley gathered on the lawn of the H2O Centre in the Mission to pledge to save water and draw attention to the very critical need to conserve in this region.

Come summer, residents from one end of the valley to the other burn through an average of 1000 litres of water per person each day. Compared to the 329 litres per person nationally, it’s an exorbitant amount.

The level of consumption is particularly alarming when one considers the role agriculture plays in the valley and the how critical water is to its success.

Where does our water go?

“We mostly use it outside and we mostly put it on our lawn,” said Doug Findlater, Mayor of West Kelowna.

“There is actually less

water per person in the valley than anywhere else in Canada,” he added. It’s a little-known statistic drawn from work Statistics Canada did on water in the region.

The Okanagan does experience drought.

We are not in a drought year at the moment, but the water shortages are measured by the lake level, which is monitored by Environment Canada and the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources, and it occurs on a routine basis, demanding decisions be made as to how low to let the lake drop.

While this can impact any community along the basin from Armstrong to Osoyoos, it’s most likely to hit downstream, often leaving communities over the border struggling.

“Every three to five years, we have a drought and you can’t really tell when it’s going to be an extreme drought,” said

The Okanagan Basin Water Board has issued a challenge to residents to pledge to conserve water and they’re offering a $5,000 prize for one indi-

vidual who takes the time to register at makewaterwork.ca The pledges include simple measures like aerating and fertilizing the lawn, so it uses less water,

and watering at dawn and dusk to avoid evaporation.

The City of Kelowna has reduced its water consumption by 20 per cent per capita since 1998, Kelowna city council-

lor Luke Stack said as he made his own pledge.

Unfortunately, as more people flow into the valley, this does not mean water consumption has dipped.

Hydro work delays reopening of West Kelowna’s Elliott Road WadePaterson STAFF REPORTER

Detour signs will be left up a month longer than expected in Westbank Centre as construction of the community’s new downtown RapidBus exchange has been delayed.

Elliott Road, which has been closed for construction since late February, is now expected to re-open Aug. 11.

The work was initially anticipated to be substantially completed by early July.

“That’s as a result of us really waiting for BC Hydro to tell us to get all of their above wire work, underground,” said Rory Kulmala, manager of fixed asset construction with BC Transit.

Kulmala was at the District of West Kelowna’s council meeting Tuesday, giving an update on transit construction.

“When (BC Hydro) gets engaged, it’s kind of: You wait for them.”

Coun. David Knowles said he was frustrated to hear Elliott Road would be blocked for an additional month.

“That’s a lot of hardship to those businesses there,” said Knowles.

“And to all the local people who have to drive around that way.”

Knowles said more pressure should have been put on BC Hydro to ensure the work was done on time.

The construction delay is not expected to impact the scheduled RapidBus phase two start date of Aug. 31, which will include the opening of Westbank Centre Exchange, Boucherie Mountain Exchange and Butt Road station.

Eventually, West Kelowna’s direct service to downtown Kelowna via Routes 20 and 24 will be discontinued. Riders on those routes will have to transfer to the RapidBus lines

to get across the bridge.

Construction on Boucherie Mountain Exchange and Butt Road station is expected to be completed by July 28.

Vandalism delays Myra adventure park opening Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

Myra Canyon Adventure Park was supposed to open this weekend.

But vandalism has delayed the adventure park from opening until at least August, and damage will likely cost the owners tens of thousands of dollars.

Owner Rolf von Andrian’s son discovered three trees in the adventure park had been damaged by a chainsaw earlier this week.

Those trees were a key part of an adventure course that won’t be able to function properly with the current damage.

“We have to redesign…a section of the course, taking down all the wiring, taking down the platforms,” said von Andrian.

“But the biggest damage is, of course, the loss of revenue.

“July is now more or less lost.”

Von Andrian came to Canada from Germany with his family two years ago, through an entrepreneurship program.

Since then he and his wife have opened Myra Canyon Ranch Bed and

Breakfast and Kelowna Stables.

This summer is set to be the adventure park’s opening season.

“We had construction (on the adventure park) for the last eight months.”

He said two of the damaged trees are easily accessible, the other is harder to get at.

The trees can possibly be replaced with poles; however, that may take away from the natural setting of the adventure park.

“The most important things we have are our trees…we want the tree, forest, canyon experience.

“The tree is more than just a holding element.”

Although the incident has impacted the family, they’re still happy to be living and doing business in Canada.

“It hurts us immensely and I’m kind of shocked that even Canada has bad apples.

“But it (won’t) stop us.”

It is part of almost $74 million being invested into communities across B.C. to meet local needs including more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery priorities.

Granfondo cycling event goes in Penticton on Sunday

On Sunday morning, British Columbia’s South Okanagan will see 2,600 cyclists take to the roads for the start of the fourth annual Prospera Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan (PGAMO).

event will attract riders from as far away as Norway, Japan, Australia and Bahrain.

Wednesday afternoon when they were called to a fire in a dust hopper at the rear of a business on Sexsmith Road. The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. by an employee at Style-Line Manufacturing. The flames spread to a second hopper but fire crews quickly had it extinguished. No one was hurt in the incident.

A reader signing herself “Sick of this crap!” sent me a responding e-mail.

She described my way of thinking as “typical of injury lawyers” and said that insurance and liability costs have gone through the roof because of it.

She noted that it’s lawyers like me who “have sapped so much creativity away in everyday life in our society and instead of self responsibility we listen to you people looking for the mighty buck.”

She concluded by thanking me for “showing just what a leach your business is.”

At the root of the matter, she’s bang-on correct.

There would be no need for liability insurance if each of us had sole responsibility for our own safety and had no ability to seek fair financial compensation from others when injuries occurred.

That’s the “mighty buck” she referred to.

Our legal system is based on fair and balanced compensation for actual losses.

An injury puts you into a hole, the hole representing your actual losses (injuries, pain and discomfort, income loss, treatment expense, etc.).

Our legal system provides a mechanism (lawsuit) to require those responsible to fill that hole.

There’s no way to really, truly fill the hole by turning back time and making it that the injury did not occur, so the only thing to fill the hole with is financial compensation.

Drivers, businesses, manufacturers and the insurance companies who protect them, don’t readily step up to the plate to provide fair financial compensation, which gives the “injury” lawyer the job of forcing them to.

Grocery stores aren’t some of the safest places on the planet because the huge corporations owning them care about their customers, it’s because they want to reduce the number of “holes”they have to fill.

The same goes for strict engineering standards for the construction of homes, bridges, schools and playgrounds.

In a sense, and in my view this isn’t a stretch at all, we can thank so called injury lawyers for our remarkably safe environment.

Unfortunately, it seems that the high cost of automobile insurance is not enough to talk to drivers.

Every crash that I deal with would have been prevented simply by the offending driver paying more attention to the road ahead.

Perhaps paying in advance with liability insur-

ance premiums for your share of what it costs to fill holes due to your negligent driving doesn’t talk like it should.

Maybe accountability in advance isn’t accountability at all. Perhaps there should be a significant financial penalty that goes along with causing a crash, far beyond a $100$200 traffic ticket.

Apart from personal accountability, our driving attitudes need to change.

We can each of us pull our weight to help change the attitudes around us.

We need to live and breathe the reality, in my view, that “One crash is too many.”

MP touts federal government’s National Conservation Plan

T

he enthusiasm and support for turning the rail line from Vernon to Kelowna into a recreational trail shows how passionate people in our community are when it comes to conservation of green space.

Constituents who share this passion should welcome the federal government’s recently announced National Conservation Plan, which provides a long-term vision for conservation efforts across Canada and brings together all Canadians who are working to conserve and restore our lands, waters and wildlife.

The plan will focus on conserving and restoring Canada’s ecosystems and connecting Canadians to nature.

It builds on Canada’s collective conservation achievements and provides funding of $252 million over five years for conserving ecologic-

Ron Cannan ally sensitive lands, supporting voluntary conservation and restoration action, restoring wetlands, strengthening marine and coastal conservation and improving access to wildlife areas and green spaces for Canadians.

Since May 2014, the government has tabled legislation to create two national parks and announced funding for 85 community conservation projects across the country.

Since 2006, the government has made a six-

fold expansion of the Nahanni National Park Reserve, which is a significant conservation achievement. More than 4,000 km² of ecologically sensitive private lands has been secured and we have added an area nearly twice the size of Vancouver Island to the network of federal protected areas.

Ottawa has designated three new marine protected areas and introduced a legislation to create the Rouge National Urban Park.

As well, it has supported partners in the delivery of hundreds of local projects to protect species at risk and their habitats, improved water quality in the Great Lakes, Lake Simcoe and Lake Winnipeg, rehabilitated recreational fisheries habitat and are working to clean up contaminated sites.

A party so awesome it spawned a festival–in Rock Creek

The Ponderosa Music and Arts Festival is one quirky tale of awesomeness in which Kelowna played a starring role, as founders Kris Hargrave, 28, and Kia Zahrabi, 30, tell it.

Hargrave and Zahrabi profess an evolved musical taste cultivated in the trenches of hardcore live music fandom.

Naming Matthew Lyall, of Gold & Youth, and members of Bestie among their personal friends, the pair admit they never aspired to play in a band so much as develop a scene to call their

own.

“We want to build our reputation so people just trust us and will come out maybe not knowing all the bands, but knowing they’ll leave loving them all,” explained Hargrave.

As buddies united in a cultured appetite for cool, the pair have honed throwing a party to an art form since meeting via 367 Phipps Crescent. Both called the Rutland house home sweet home for separate stints as young adults and the bond they formed hanging out under its eaves was enough to honour its digits in the name of their new company: 367 Productions.

Apes, humans lock in battle again

ince the classic 1968 version of Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston, the Apes franchise has been very successful for 20th Century Fox. There were five movies in the original series, plus two spin-off television shows—one live action and one animated.

Mind your trash–before others do

ut of sight, out of mind?

Unfortunately, too many people still have that attitude and persist with illegal dumping.

All of us should count ourselves fortunate that our city interfaces with the wilderness.

The forests are our neighbourhood and most of us respect that relationship, but too many still don’t. Furniture, tires, rusted metal, scrap wood, whatever— just because we don’t tie it up in a garbage bag doesn’t mean it’s not garbage.

Those who dump illegally are disrespectful and selfish because they’re just leaving it to someone else to pick up after them. Creeks, lake shore and underwater cleanup groups, outdoor recreation clubs and service club volunteers all participate in cleanups, even though there are probably other ways they could be spending their time.

Tonnes of illegally dumped material is recovered and properly disposed of on a regular basis.

Throwing garbage in the woods isn’t just unsightly, it can also

damage and even poison animal and fish habitats.

Illegal dumping of yard scraps isn’t as egregious, but it can encourage others to cheat.

Even folks in well-to-do neighbourhoods wheelbarrow their hedge trimmings into the woods—sometimes under cover of night—and they look ridiculous.

Are illegal dumpers trying to prove a point? Tipping fees are too high, so they won’t comply? We disagree. We should absolutely pay a premium for our

role in cramming our landfills and leaving behind a big ol’ pile of garbage on our planet.

In 2014, people who dump illegally are pariahs and should be made to feel that way. It’s easy to report incidents: regional districts have online forms and have been known to issue hefty fines.

At the very least, we should glare at offenders; if we’d like to do more, we can join a cleanup effort.

When it comes to trash, there’s no such thing as ‘out of sight, out of mind.’

A panic attack is bad enough, but it’s followed by distress

P

anic is a word that brings to mind chaos and fear. It is easy to picture terrorized people running in all directions as well as general noise and disruption from several sources.

For people who experience panic disorder, these kinds of feelings are descriptive of what they live through within their own bodies and minds.

As the name implies, panic disorder involves repeated and unexpected panic attacks. In order for pan-

these attacks must also be followed by a month or more of distress about the panic attack—worry over what Paul it might mean or that it Latimer will happen again.

Panic attacks are by definition very frightening experiences lasting anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more. Symptoms include extreme fear as well as physical sensations such as a racing heart, sweating, hyperventilating, dizziness, shaking

and nausea.

Many people in the midst of a panic attack believe they are having a heart attack or that they are dying or ‘going crazy.’

Many people experiencing a panic attack will go to the hospital convinced they are in serious medical distress. Symptoms do subside on their own eventually.

Although many people may experience a panic attack during life in response to a particularly stressful event, true panic disorder affects just under three per cent of adults. It typically begins in early adulthood although it can occur at any age.

About a third of people who develop panic disorder also experience agoraphobia—a crippling fear of being in any place or situation where escape might be difficult or help unavailable. Often, those with agoraphobia become housebound and severely limit their activities and interactions.

Although the exact cause of panic disorder is unknown, it is believed to have both genetic and environmental influences like most psychiatric conditions. We do know it tends to run in families, is linked with other anxiety disorders and often begins during a particularly stressful period in a per-

son’s life.

Fortunately, panic disorder is treatable. Cognitive behaviour therapy is very effective with this condition, as are SSRI medications. A com- L bination of these treatments is usually optimal.

What is not recommended is medication such as ativan (lorazepam) taken as needed. Unfortunately, this is still commonly prescribed and can lead to both psychological and physical dependency.

Politicians seek ambiguity through legal opinion

To the editor: There are many lessons to be learned from the recent Supreme Court of Canada’s recognition of the Tsilhqot’in First Nation’s claim to aboriginal title, but none more important than the message to our provincial government.

Governing through litigation is costly both in terms of dollars and in the emotional strain of those seeking justice. I can only imagine the anguish in which the Tsilhqot’in First Nation people have gone through for generations over the monetary and emotional costs these cases have generated.

Governing through litigation was never mandated by the public.

This Supreme Court ruling is only one of many in recent years in which governments throughout Canada have had to be taught a lesson on choosing legislation that has within it a blatant disregard for constitutional and human rights.

A deep sense of gratitude must be made to Chief Roger William who spent 25 years to bring this case through the justice system and to the Supreme Court of Canada. Chief William was able to not only set a precedent with regard to aboriginal title, but he has brought to the forefront an example of a successful challenge to governments which dare infringe upon the rights enshrined in

the Constitution—a success story that is inspirational and far-reaching for both native and non-native peoples of Canada.

Why does our current (B.C.) government choose to listen to legal opinions that promote legislation that contains ambiguity and misinterpretation of our Constitution? How is this a benefit to our province?

What a waste of time and public money. Shame on you.

For politicians who refuse to recognize our Charter of Rights and Freedom, who refuse to listen to legal authority on questions of judicial authority, I ask you to reconsider being a member of government. Yes, you

manage very well to get enough votes to be elected, but success at the voting booth in no way gives you license to dismiss our history, to dismiss our inherent rights, and to violate the judiciary under which our democracy exists.

And to our Premier: Ms. Clark, I want to remind you that governing requires immense integrity and a deep respect for the laws of our land; the legacy that your government is leaving is nothing to be proud of—it is a legacy of numerous human rights violations that required the Supreme Court of Canada’s intervention. Because some lawyers are able to twist our laws in certain ways, does

not make disobeying our Constitution rights.

Shadow politics has no place in Canada. And this ruling has brought another shadow into our light.

Thank goodness for people like Chief William who had the fortitude and the faith to see justice through. How many more times shall we have to do this?

Congratulations to all human rights advocates, letter writers, support groups, union members, sign makers, etc. Bless you all and keep fighting because Chief William has shown us that justice can and will prevail.

Blame media for mental health misunderstandings To the editor: Re: Column in the July 4 Capital News by Paul Latimer: Violence and the Mentally Ill The column by Paul Latimer states: “Many people…believe violence is a probable symptom associated with these (schizophrenia or bipolar disorder) serious mental illnesses. Unfortunately, this assumption is the result of misinformation and excessive media coverage of violent crimes.”

six years who are facing these types of debilitating issues. This also includes depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Our experience tells us that the mental illness ‘story’ is misunderstood.

In fact, the misunderstandings and stigmas attached to mental illness could foster those exact behaviours the media has represented. The projected attitudes make sufferers feel like outsiders— neglected and rejected by society. This in turn stops people from seeking the help they need.

People often do not discuss these issues because there is no ‘solution’ for them—only a way to cope with their issues. “Self-medicating” is a term often used to describe someone trying to cope with the symptoms of their mental health issues, abusing substances like prescription or street drugs. Giving people help with their issues can help reduce the undesirable outcomes of mental health issues.

Getting appropriate care early on is very im1portant in panic disorder.

The sooner the condition is recognized and treated, the less likely a phobia will develop and the less damage done in the brain.

Unfortunately, stigma and lack of awareness about mental illness often lead people to delay seeking help. Sometimes, the physical symptoms associated with panic disorder can also cause confusion and people go several

years before receiving an adequate diagnosis.

If you or a loved one are experiencing panic attacks, speak with your doctor about it. Effective help is available.

he heat is coming on and it looks like the tomato crops will be a little earlier than normal this year.

I have a few that are ready to turn red any day now.

Several callers on our radio show commented they already have some cherry tomatoes ready to eat.

I have always wondered why the DTM or days to maturity do not coincide with reality.

For instance, some of the later varieties such as Beefsteak indicate a DTM of 96 days from transplanting out.

If that is the case, then it would be early Septem ber before there was a ripe tomato with a May 24 planting time.

There are so many variables as to when we get our first ripe tomato.

FROM THE GROUND UP

Don Burnett Size and condition of the transplant, soil conditions, nutrients and of course weather all factor in to how quickly a plant will produce its first ripe tomato.

I know one thing is for certain—planting out tomatoes before the ground and night temperatures reach a certain point provides no advantage over transplanting at the correct time.

Tomatoes, and for that matter, peppers and egg plant, require heat.

Planting out too early can shock the plant so it

takes even longer to mature than later plantings.

The DTM range from very early 55 days to very late 90 days.

You will find most varieties however are in the 60- to 80-day range and from my experience the difference between all of them is quite blurred.

I plant several varieties each year and most come on at close to the same time.

At the end of the season it always makes me sad to see the dozens of green tomatoes still on the vines with no hope of maturing.

Last year, I picked most of them before pulling out the plants and we had great success just letting them ripen on the kitchen counter.

Another method is to pull out the entire plant and hang it up roots

and all in a cool room.

It’s amazing how the tomatoes will ripen nicely much faster than just picking them and letting them sit.

Now all this tomato talk has made me hungry so I think I will slice

Skilled workers needed

ast week the Central Okanagan Economic Development Commission released a report where they surveyed 882 valley employers to identify the labour issues we will be facing in the Okanagan in the next five years.

The report looked at labour supply and demand, recruiting and retaining employees, training needs, and other issues.

The results showed many employers, 64.6 per cent of those surveyed, expect to hire more people between now and 2020 and see this as one of their biggest challenges. They expect our labour force to grow by 18.5 per cent to meet economic growth and offset jobs vacated by retiring workers and those leaving the area.

This challenge focused on not having the right pool of workers locally to fill the positions they require. It is anticipated that of the job vacancies, 43.5 per cent will require a college credential and 20.9 per cent will require a university eduncation, making the positions potentially hard to nfill.

- Given that 47 per cent -of our current residents only have a high school ndiploma many employ-ers will need to look out-side of the region to re-cruit new staff.

Along with this, prov-incial level projections expect one million job open-ings in B.C. between -2010 and 2020. Many of .these, approximately 65 per cent, will be due to retirement and other factors where people either move away or opt out of the workforce. There is

Jane Muskens a growing concern that if we continue with the same level of college and university graduates and the same level of in-migration, 18,800 jobs that require a post-secondary education will go unfilled in B.C. This tells us that there is clearly a skills/education deficit and although we might have workers we may not have the right people for the available jobs. Right now B.C. is ranked eighth in Canada in granting degrees. Our province produces 27.7 engineers per 100,000 residents, where the Canadian average is 46.1.

Although Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan play a significant role in the education and training of our residents, we rely on the government to fund our programs and have limited capacity to add new programs and extra seats.

As for in-migration, although many people are attracted to the Valley, wages tend to be higher in Alberta and northern B.C., leading many workers into these areas.

Focusing on strategies to encourage our high school graduates to transition into post-secondary education and to remain in the Valley once they graduate should be explored.

Another option is to look at adults who are underemployed and find ways for them to re-train.

This can be difficult for those with financial commitments and who may require upgrading.

I have worked at Okanagan College for 20 years and every year I see more adults over 40, returning to school.

Through time this will become the new normal and, as far as I’m concerned, you are never too old to learn.

BlueSky shining for buyers on Black Mountain The property market in Kelowna appears to be rebounding and for evidence of that, look no farther than Melcor Development Ltd’s BlueSky at Black Mountain.

The lots at Bluesky’s newest neighbourhood, Meadowlands, are selling quickly, according to Melcor’s regional manager for community development Andrew Bruce.

He said of the 130 lots currently in Meadowlands alone, 110 have been sold, many in the last year.

“According to (MLS) stats, (the local market) is steadily improving,” said Bruce.

“We are finally getting back to 2003-2004 levels.”

Another indicator is the quickness with which four townhouses Melcor built at the entrance to its Fairways neighbourhood have sold.

The four townhomes, each two storeys and about

2,000-square feet, are an unusual departure for the developer which, up to now, has concentrated solely on developing lots and selling them to buyers who hire their own contractors to build single-family homes.

Bruce said three of the four townhomes, located near the Black Mountain Golf

Course and appropriately named Fore, sold in just three weeks.

Each has a two-car garage, range in price from the $412,000 to $424,000 and are located on a small strip of land the developer got back from the city at the corner of Black Mountain Drive and Stockley Street.

“We think we kinda nailed it on the pricing,” said Bruce, adding two of the units went to empty nesters, while the third was bought by a young couple.

Bruce said in the past, the biggest difficulty the company faced in trying to attract buyers for its lots at BlueSky was actually

Change of command marks end of a long military career When Lt.-Col. Lyle Johnson passed the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre flag to Lt.-Col. Judy Peter yesterday, he officially brought to an end a lengthy and distinguished career in the Canadian military.

Johnson began as a cadet in 1968, becoming an officer with Cadet Services Canada (now Cadet Instructor Cadre) with 1856 Moose Jaw Schools Cadet Corps. He served a total of 16

years at the Vernon camp, as an officer in a variety of positions and commanded the centre for the past four years.

Johnson was awarded the third clasp to his Canadian Forces medal in 2011, signifying 42 years of service.

In April 2012, he was selected as a recipient of the Cadet Instructor Cadre Lifetime Achievement Award. That was in addition to the Can-

ada 125 Medal, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal he had already received. In November 2013 Johnson was inducted into the Order of Military Merit (OMM) in the officer category for “service above self” during his 45 years of military service.

The camp’s new commander, Peter, attended 25 years of summer training, at both Vernon and

Ipperwash Army Cadet Summer Training Centres. In addition, she served in leadership positions at both her home corps and with the Pacific Region Cadet Support Unit.

After taking some time off from the cadet world, Peter returned to Vernon in 1999 and has served as standards officer, training coordinator, deputy chief instructor, chief instructor and, the last four years, as deputy commanding officer.

Two new sports will be introduced at the Brazil Olympics in 2016—golf and rugby sevens.

Many of the rugby men and women who will represent Canada at those Olympic games are here in Kelowna this weekend to play in the RugbyDaze Sevens.

The Canadian Maple Leafs men’s and women’s teams will both play at the Apple Bowl on Friday night and all-day Saturday. The Maple Leafs compete in world competitions for our nation. They are stocked with many of the best players in Canada today, including Nick Blevins, capped 19 times for Canada, Gordon McRorie, scrum-half for Canada against Japan last month, and Pat Kay, captain of the Under-20 Canadian team who placed second in the IRB Junior World Rugby Championships last year in Chile.

The Maple Leaf men will compete in a 12-team sevens tournament against a number of other outstanding men’s teams. The Calgary Hornets are threetime provincial champions in Alberta.

The Lionheart Sevens side features a number of world-class players, including Sitiveni Nacoko, recognized as one of the top sevens players in Canada.

Two local sevens teams are considered dark horses to do well in the tournament. The Cannibals are a local group of players who won the Calgary Stampede Sevens last weekend. The Kelow-

na Tartan Blazers have many players from the Kelowna Crows, including Cole Mosychuk, a highly regarded prospect for national sevens play.

The five-team women’s tournament will be just as exciting. The two finalists in the Women’s Sevens 2014 Final in Las Vegas will both be here, the Canadian Maple Leafs and the Aptoella Angels.

Both of these teams are made up of Canada’s top sevens and 15s players. Canada players here include Barbara Mervin, scoring sensation Magali Harvey, Julianne Zussman, and Jessica Dovanne, all who have been named to compete for Canada in the Women’s Rugby World Cup next month in France.

“We don’t often get this many worldclass players competing in Kelowna,” said Doug Manning, president of the Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts.

“Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be outstanding to watch. We encourage anyone interested in seeing this exciting new Olympic sport to join us at the Apple Bowl on Friday and Saturday.”

Games begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 11 at the Apple Bowl. Saturday games begin at 9 a.m, with the semi-finals and finals projected to begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Friday night games are free to the public. Saturday games cost $10 for an all-day pass. Under-13 youth accompanied by a parent get in free at anytime.

United U16s golden in Richmond From this spring’s opening whistle, the Kelowna United U16 boys had their sights set on provincial gold.

United realized those ambitions last weekend in Richmond by capturing B.C. Soccer’s Les Sinnot Memorial Provincial B Cup championship.

After posting a 3-0 record in the round robin, Kelowna edged Prince George 2-1 in Sunday’s U16 boys final.

Coached by Tony Gonzalez and Bill Clark, United also posted 2-1

wins over Richmond and Ladner, and 3-0 over Terrace in the round robin.

A total team effort included precision scoring by Morgan Gonzales, Kealan Cangiano, Jaden McNulty, Jeremy McKay, Hakeem Rockwell, Josh Clark and the final game-winning bullet by Zach Bradshaw.

United’s smothering midfield play and rock solid backline allowed few opponent scoring opportunities, all of which were met with stellar goalkeeping.

U15 GIRLS SILVER…

The Kelowna United U15 girls took the silver medal at the Provincial B Cup in Chilliwack.

After positing a 2-0-1 record in the round robin, the Kelowna girls came

up just short against the host team from Chilliwack in the final, losing 2-1.

In the round robin, Kelowna defeated Peninsula and Prince George, while tying Aldergrove.

Meanwhile, the Kelowna U16 girls were the third local team competing at provincials and finished 6th overall in Chilliwack. In the 5th/6th place game, the United girls lost 4-3 to Kootenay.

Kelowna’s lone win came in the round robin 2-1 over Tsawwassen.

Chiefs name assistant captains

A pair of veteran players have been confirmed as part of leadership group for the 2014-15 Kelowna Chiefs.

Chase Astorino and Brady Mende have been named assistant captains for the upcoming KIJHL season, working alongside recently named captain, Anthony Ruggiero.

“Both Astorino and Mende are natural fits as they both lead by example,” said Chiefs’ head coach Jason Tansem. “You can’t turn leadership on and off and these two don’t as they’re respected and looked up to by their teammates and peers.”

And leaders they are. Mende first joined the Chiefs in 2011 as an AP. Since then, the 5-foot-7, 150-pound forward has collected a total of 82 points with 34 goals and 48 assists during the regular seasons.

“I’m looking forward to helping the team get to the

top and staying there,” says Mende.

The 19-year-old isn’t one to be found in the penalty box very often, only racking up nine minutes in regular season play since stepping on the ice with the Chiefs. He’s known for helping out off the ice at numerous community hosted by the team.

The upcoming season will mark Astorino’s second year as an Assistant Captain for Kelowna. Standing 5-foot-10 and weighing in at 170 pounds, the 20-yearold forward joined the Chiefs in 2012-13 and collected 77 penalty minutes in his first season. Since putting on a Chiefs jersey, Astorino has tallied 16 points in regular season play plus a total of 143 penalty minutes.

“I’m looking forward to my last chance at a Junior Hockey League title, playing for a great team and alongside a great group of guys,” says Astorino.

A’s sweep Royals, solidly in fourth The Okanagan Athletics are firmly in fourth spot as they head into a weekend respite from B.C. Premier Baseball League action.

The A’s (27-15) are on a six-game winning streak after sweeping past the Parksville Royals in a pair of doubleheaders last weekend at Elks Stadium.

Vancouver runners top field in 8k race

Vancouver runners showed the way at this year’s edition of the Midsummer 8 K Run. Adam Byles was the men’s and overall winner on Sunday morning with a time of 25 minutes 13 seconds, while Natasha Wodak triumphed in the women’s event in 28:07.

Byles won by 43 seconds over fellow Vancouverite Kevin O’Connor who came home in 25:56, while Kelowna’s Jeff Vogt was third in 27:56.

“I was trying to get out hard and to hang in there,” said Byles. “It was an interesting race. I run lots on the track and liked the forth-and-back and it’s flat.”

Wodak was a 23-second winner over eKimberley Doerksen of -Gibsons (28:30), while Melissa Ross from Err-ington was third in 29:23.

The Heat defeated One Pass Away 50-29, Triple Threat U16 45-41, Calgary U16 Suns 58-24, and Calgary U17 Suns 5111.

The competition wasn’t the consistent level the girls were hoping for heading into the last tourney of the season this weekend in Edmonton.

Triple Threat posed the biggest threat of the weekend at TRU, with the Heat controlling play late in the game and capitalizing on opportunities to secure the win.

The final two games were a struggle mentally, due to the large gap in skill level, but the Heat was able to work on some new offensive and defensive sets that will be useful in Edmonton.

Cash prizes awaited the first three overall female/male winners and medals beckoned the first three in all age categories.

The race included wheelchair racers and a kid’s race. The kids ran a shorter course of 1 km and 3 km respectively.

Whitehorse product Samantha Burgis has rounded out UBC Okanagan’s cast of keepers for the Heat’s inaugural season of Canada West women’s soccer.

The 5-foot-8 F.H. Collins Secondary graduate will have a big role this fall backing up fifth-year Heat goalkeeper Christine Tallon, according to Heat head coach, Claire Paterson.

“Samantha has some fantastic high level experience playing at the Western Canada Games, and Canada Summer Games,” Paterson said of Burgis’ projected role. “We are excited that she has decided to join our program in the fall as [she] continues to develop in her game while she works towards her degree.”

Highlighting Burgis’ soccer achievements are two gold medals in three years at the Arctic Winter games in 2012 and 2014.

She represented Team Yukon in 2011 at the Western Canada Games and in 2013 at the Canada Summer Games.

National hammer silver for Stroda After a underachieving opening-day effort, Aaron Stroda rebounded to make the podium at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships last weekend in SainteThérèse, Que. The Kelowna athlete, who settled for fourth in discus on Day 1, bounced back with a PB in the 6 kg hammer throw. His PB of 55.25 metres was just 14 cm short of the best throw, and earned him a national silver medal.

“I couldn’t find the groove on Saturday but felt more in sync on Sunday with my hammer,” said Stroda. “I am super happy with my new PB. That’s how you want to compete in a championship event. The rest is luck.”

Only one competition remains this season for Stroda to try get closer to the 60m mark.

“I hope to improve my marks next week at the B.C. Championships in

Kamloops,” said Aaron.

“There is still lots of fuel in my tank and next year I am still able to compete in the junior category, nationally and hopefully internationally.”

Stroda obtained his Canadian citizenship last December and hopes for his first international appearance for Canada in 2015.

He also finished sixth overall in the men’s shot put competition at junior nationals with a new PB toss of 14.76m.

February 20, 1923 – June 28, 2014.

Fred passed away around 6:30 am.

He always was an early riser. Fred was born in Western Ukraine on the family farm. He had two siblings. In 1945 he met and fell in love with Lydia. They married in 1946 and immigrated to England to work in the textile industry. In 1949 along with their baby son Boris they immigrated to High Prairie, Alberta.

Fred was a farmer, carpenter and railroader. He started as a section man for NAR, continually advancing his career, retiring 35 years later as a Roadmaster in Edmonton for CN. Upon retirement, Fred and Lydia moved to Kelowna, because it reminded them of the old country.

Fred enjoyed gardening, fruit trees, grape vines and wine making. In the winter he enjoyed ice fishing, and never came home empty handed. He also continued carpentry and willingly helped friends and neighbors with many projects.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Lydia in 2010. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Boris, daughters Sylvia (Gilles), Lil (Sam); four grandchildren, Tracy (Jeff), Jeremie (Jeannette), Dylan (Alexandra) and Sarah (Jason) and four great-grandchildren. A Service will be held on July 14th, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1935 Barlee, Kelowna. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Fred. Donna was born the youngest of ten children, on September 30th, 1959 in Fairview, Alberta. She will be remembered for her love of family, friends, animals and gardening and her kind heart and generous spirit. A Celebration of Donna’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 15th, 2014 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 121 Sutherland Ave. A Celebration of her life will also be held in Hines Creek, Alberta on Saturday, July 19th, 2014.

WINSTON, TERRANCE KEITH (TK) With Jane by his side, TK passed away at the age of 68 in Kelowna B.C. on July 3, 2014 after a lengthy battle with industry related lung disease.

TK is survived by his loving partner of 17 years, Jane Colburn and her sons (Steven & Paul and family, her step-sons Craig & Grant and family); his daughter Carrie and family (fiancé Randy & step-daughter Elise) and his half-brother Kelly and family (Karen and Kyle). TK was born October 7th, 1945 in Vancouver B.C. and became a world traveler in his late teens and early twenties. He returned to Canada after the passing of his mother (Cleata Hughes) and became a father the following year. Most of his working life was spent as a foreman on hydro dams throughout Canada as sand-blaster and spray-painter which led to his illness.

One of his greatest passions was classic cars and TK could always be seen in one of the many classics he had meticulously restored. TK made great friends in his lifetime, especially in Christina Lake, B.C. (where he called “paradise”); it was here that he and Jane enjoyed most of their lives together. TK will forever be known for his great story telling that was only surpassed by his wonderful sense of humour.TK will live on in the stories we share about him as he inspires us all to live our own great stories. TK’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and volunteers of Central Okanagan Hospice House. Street hockey tourney planned for improved Brown Road Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

The recently upgraded Brown Road will be the backdrop for a brand new District of West Kelowna street hockey tournament next month.

Brown Road—from

Main Street to Gosset Road—will be blocked off and transformed into five road hockey arenas Sunday, Aug. 24 from noon to 6:15 p.m.

Recreation department summer student Jeremy Flett and economic development summer stu-

dent Kyla Thurnheer have been involved in planning the tournament, which is open to youth ages six to 14.

“We figured the best way to show off the new road is through a street hockey tournament,” said Flett.

The tournament will include three divisions: Ages six to eight, nine to 11 and 12 to 14. Both boys and girls are invited to sign up.

Teams of four to eight players can register at a cost of $160 per team.

Westlake/Stevens intersection closed while roundabout built The intersection of Westlake and Stevens Roads will be closed from July 8 to 18 for concrete pouring as the new roundabout traffic circle at that location begins to take shape.

The concrete will need to cure for at least seven days. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to access Stevens Road and the construction

detour route on McDougall Road.

Industrial Road will continue to be accessible off Westlake Road from Highway 97, as well as businesses on Westlake from Highway 97 to the intersection with Stevens Road.

Stevens Road, and the McDougall Road detour, can be accessed from Highway 97 via Ross

Road.

The Westlake Road upgrade construction project involves transforming the road, between Highway 97 and Starlight Crescent, from a rural state to an urban arterial standard.

The project began in April and is expected to take approximately five months to complete.

“Every three to five years, we have a drought and you can’t really tell when it’s going to be an extreme drought,” said Warwick Sears.

The pledges include simple measures like aerating and fertilizing the lawn so it uses less water, as well as watering at dawn and dusk to avoid evaporation.

The City of Kelowna has reduced its water consumption by 20 per cent per capita since 1998.

Kelowna city councillor Luke Stack said as he made his own pledge.

Unfortunately, as more people flow into the

valley, this does not mean water consumption has dipped.

Stack noted that where we tend to spend our water resources is a costly affair—both for the environment and for taxpayers.

“Most of the water is put onto our grass, which is really amazing when you think we take it out of our streams and out of our lake and we pipe it and we purify it and then we put it onto the grass,” said Stack. “We need to look at ways to reduce that.”

He pledged only to use water on his plants, and not the concrete sidewalks beside, and to reduce the outside landscaping on the buildings his non-profit, Society of Hope, runs by putting more emphasis on xeriscaping.

All of the mayors asked that local residents put a concerted effort into minimizing their water use in the coming months, particularly as we enter this very dry time of year.
