The Central Okanagan Regional District is still looking to speak with Kelowna Mountain’s developer before its grand opening this spring, though it is pleased the mountain will not force a change in its bylaws.

Last week the courts found in favour of the district as developer Mark Consiglio fought to ensure the bylaw was not tight enough to hamper use of the grand Italian villa he’s using for a

welcome centre or the accompanying amenities he’s added to the property.

The bid failed, meaning the site is still zoned for agri-tourism and thus requires significantly more discussion and negotiation with district staff before many of the plans volleyed about in the media can legally materialize.

“The long and the short of this is we’ve offered, on a couple of occasions, to meet with the landowner to discuss the uses in place and the intended uses and future plans for that property, and they have not taken us

up on that offer,” said Bruce Smith, RDCO spokesman.

The bylaw’s definition of agri-tourism means the welcome centre, while technically legal, can only have 100 people in it at a time and only 200 square feet of it can be used for the public.

As for the 800-seat amphitheatre already on site, or the ginseng greenhouses he’s pitched publicly, it may be possible, but this would require further work with the regional district before this spring.

Pulling back Oscars’ red curtain

Ashland plant closure means loss of 32 jobs

Most people soak in the glitz and glamour of Oscar night from a cozy spot on their own couch.

For one Kelowna woman, however, the red carpet was all but unfurled under her nose, offering a front row view of a world few get to tread.

Theatre company head and local arts writer Bonnie Gratz last month saw an opportunity to see the inner workings of the Hollywood event.

“I had planned a trip to LA for the same time as the Oscars and I write an arts column…so I thought, ‘My goodness, I wonder if I can get press credentials?”she said from LA, Tuesday afternoon.

She poked about on the Internet for a bit, then realized her press connections would make her eligible for some access, so she crossed her fingers and sent in an application.

Approval did follow—a certain level of it, anyway.

Gratz was given a pass to access the set-up stage of the Oscars.

“I could be in the security areas and on the red carpet until noon the day of the show,” she said.

So she went to LA with a burgundy tealength gown she had from an old opera and her family—who weren’t actually able to be on the red carpet—in tow.

Before getting up close and personal with Oscar, however, she had to pass through security checks that rivalled post9/11 airport safety measures.

Concrete barricades and metal detectors were around the theatre. And

she also had to be wary of her online presence.

Gratz was told that she couldn’t have any photos taken of her press credentials, as someone may snatch the image and fake their way in. If that happened, she’d never be able to go again.

Jumping through all the right hoops yet again, Gratz found herself on the red carpet Sunday.

None of the stars who attend the show are there during the pre-noon slot, but that didn’t mean there was nothing to do.

“I got to meet the theatre press contingent,” she said.

“There was so much press getting everything ready. Every nook and cranny of the red carpet is taken up by different news agencies trying to get their time with the stars.”

And when Gratz pulled back the curtain to see how the movie-media machine works, there was a lot more smoke and mirrors than she had expected.

“Some news organizations that had also only been given credentials for set-up would film things that weren’t true,” she said, noting the female correspondents were dressed as well as any of the stars.

One of those welldressed correspondents who stood out in Gratz’s mind was a Brazilian TV host who she saw pre-taping on the red carpet.

“She said things like, ‘I knew all along Gravity would win for Best Picture,’” Gratz recalled, pointing out that it was actually 12 Years a Slave that won.

ming, long before the show even started.

“They were there blowing kisses, at the end of the red carpet. It was not at all taped live,” she said.

As for how she used her credentials, Gratz said she took as many shots of the scene as possible.

She’ll soon write a column about her experience, too.

But, mostly, it was really a fact-finding mission for years to come.

Her goal is to attain a higher level of clearance for next year’s event, which may allow her to interview some of the attendees.

Even if she doesn’t, however, the experience is one worth repeating.

“It’s crazy and fun,” she said. “Some people were saying, it’s such a cutthroat kind of thing, but it’s not. The press was as star struck as anyone.

“All those people were pinching themselves, taking selfies. They were all generous and kind.”

If she’s going to change anything, though, it will be her outfit. A three-quarter length dress won’t do for Oscar run number two.

Expect to see Gratz pull out a full formal gown for next year—fingers crossed.

Gratz will be home Saturday, putting on the show the Astonishing Adventure of Awesome Girl and Radical Boy at the Black Box theatre. The show runs March 13 to 22. kmichaels @kelownacapnews.com

There was almost a collective sigh of relief Tuesday when Ashland Chemicals manager Kelly Brown told his staff of 32 they would close the doors for good.

Business globally has not been good since 2008 and Ashland International had identified that the Canadian customer base was not keeping pace with the lower performance.

All of this was before Kelowna Pacific Railway collapsed, spiking the means of importing the chemicals from Texas needed to make their resins and gelcoats.

“Basically, we were suffering and just trying to eke out a living here,” said Brown.

He was in Ontario on vacation last July when he learned KPR had gone into receivership, stopping rail service in large part because their financial problems were just too great to maintain the rail line itself.

The train was running slower and slower, making it less and less useful to customers, not to mention increasing the risk it would crash with a load of Ashland’s chemicals.

The Lac-Mégantic derailment happened the next day. A 74-car freight train carrying crude oil exploded in the small Quebec town, blowing up 30 buildings and killing 47 people.

That was when Brown says he knew it was over.

“It was like being told your mother is dying,” he said.

The last half year has been a perpetual exercise in grasping at faint straws of hope, knowing full well that jobs would be lost, including his own.

“I tried to work with the shippers that were on the line here in Kelowna. There wasn’t a lot of high interest,” he said. “If you’re just selling metal parts, just to truck it up to Kamloops is not a big deal.”

As of close of business Wednesday, CN Rail had not received a business proposal from the one proponent who has expressed interest in reopening the line.

CN is working with the individual and there is no date set for when a proposal would need to be filed by, according to Emily Hamer, CN public and government affairs.

Should this new operator fail to materialize, however, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will each have 30 days, in succession, to purchase the line for public use.

Employees at Ashland, meanwhile, began the process of beginning anew Wednesday.

“Ashland has been very good to us,” said Brown, noting severance packages and support services have been provided so the employees can find new work.

Concerns raised by Ashland’s lawyers that hundreds of jobs could be lost in surrounding businesses because the company has pulled out of the region are likely for naught.

Brown said the local Ashland plant, in fact, sold to suppliers who would then turn around and sell to local customers.

Effectively, the major change will be that their supplies now come from a different state, he said. jsmith@kelownacapnews.com

High school students put trades and tech skills to the test Hundreds of high school students from Revelstoke to Osoyoos will be making Okanagan College their temporary home Friday as they participate in and watch the 18th annual Trades and Technology Regional Skills BC Competition.

The students will be competing in 11 different contests, ranging from carpentry to culinary arts, and from architectural computer-assisted drafting to welding.

“Every year we try to provide a wide variety of competitions to test the Grade 10-12 competitors’ abilities,” said Dianne Holm, who has been organizing this event at the college for seven years.

“And every year we are impressed with the level of the expertise and the skills they bring to the contests.”

The Okanagan College event is one of 12 regional competitions that occur throughout the province, and which feeds into the SkillsBC provincial competition, that will be held April 9 in Abbotsford.

The college-based event also features a junior skills competition for students in Grades 6 to 10, that sees them racing their hand built gravity vehicles down a 32foot long track.

Added to the competitions are a host of activity stations, where students, parents, teachers and the public can explore different trades and technologies, including aircraft maintenance engineering, robotics, motor vehicle trades, sheet metal, welding and more.

A new feature this year is the maker space, that allows people to explore their creativity and problem-solving ability with an array of materials and tools.

While the competition starts at 10 a.m. with registration, the skills events run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours of the college’s trades facilities are available during the day. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and will be held in various rooms, but activities will be focused in the college’s heavy duty equipment shop.

It coincides with another huge draw for students and the public to the Kelowna campus—the college’s Spaghetti Bridge Building Contest.

Kelowna residents won’t get to see what the city’s proposed $42-million city police services building will look like this afternoon at the first of two open houses on the project.

But they will get to ask questions about it.

The reason for the lack of specific visuals is because the city doesn’t know yet what the building will look like either.

According to infrastructure division director John Vos, the city is using a design-build process that searches for proponent teams that unite architects, engineers and builders, then they tell the city what they would build having reviewed the requirements stipulated by the city.

- And in the case of a facility to house the RCMP, the requirements are numerous. t “We (the city and RCMP) have a team that has been working on this lfor two years,” said Vos. s “We will be giving (prospective proponent teams) a document f1,000-pages long (with -specifications).”

Vos said unlike a stanmdard office building, a police services facility has to be several buildings in one —an office building, a liobrary, a laboratory and a osmall prison.

And it has to be built ,to higher and more sercure standards, complete -

with state-of-the-art technology and meeting a post-disaster standard that would allow it to keep functioning through a major disaster such as an earthquake.

The open houses are scheduled for today and March 10 at the Royal Anne Hotel downtown on Bernard Avenue. They will run from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day.

City staff and representatives of the RCMP will be on hand to talk about the building, the need to replace the existing 50-year-old Doyle Avenue RCMP detachment with a larger facility and type of requirements such a building needs.

The new facility is slated for 1.68 hectares of city owned land at the corner of Clement Avenue and Richter Street.

The city announced last month it will use its “alternate approval process” to gain voter support

for borrowing the money needed for the project.

The AAP puts the onus on opponents to sign petition forms if they want the project either stopped, sent to a referendum vote or the city to find a different way of financing the project.

At least 10 per cent of city voters, or 9,500 residents, must sign forms before March 28 to force city council to reconsider its borrowing plan.

But Vos said it’s clear, having toured the existing RCMP detachment building, a new facility is badly needed.

had a population of just 14,000 people, has been expanded and renovated several times over the years and is too small for the number of officers and services it is required to house.

As a result, some police workers have been moved to the old city works yard on Windsor Road and storage is provided at several other offsite locations.

“We considered adding to the existing building but it’s just not doable,” said Vos. The last major addition to the existing Doyle Avenue detachment took place in the late 1990s.

Vos said one example of the poor condition the building is in, was last fall when a contractor was fixing a leak and put his foot through the roof in another area because the entire roof had deteriorated so badly.

The city is proposing the new building be at least 90,000-square feet in size and be able to accommodate future growth. It’s not yet clear how many storeys high it will be.

It would, however, contain 29 jail cells, office and work station space for departments such as management, records, administration, general duty, traffic, police dog services, community policing, victim services and CrimeStoppers, as well as meeting rooms, storage for equipment and parking for 300 vehicles.

It would also have space for the storage of evidence exhibits, a laboratory and an area set aside for logging evidence.

“In addition to the general public, we really hope residents of the area can come out to the open houses to get information about having such a facility in their neighbourhood,” said Vos.

Winter hangs on for awhile yet

W

e never put much stock in the “predictions” of six more weeks of winter, based on whether or not a groundhog in Ontario or Pennsylvania sees his or her shadow.

However, maybe those little creatures are right (at least for this year). Winter is holding on with a vengeance, not just in B.C. but in most other parts of North America. Cold, snow, ice and blizzards in the most unlikely places, such as Georgia and

North Carolina, continue.

But with snow in late February and early March, spring is definitely on hold for the moment. Daffodils will not be bursting into flower anytime soon. This Saturday night, we will make the switch to daylight saving time, to allow for more evening light. Yet will that extra hour of daylight in the evening hours be used for outdoor activities if the snow returns, or if temperatures remain low?

Living with the anxiety of a potential chairlift accident

F

or many people, the idea of initially learning how to ski might invoke bad thoughts about possibly breaking your leg if you wipe out badly on a ski run.

For me, it was riding the chairlifts, a fear I never really got over.

So when the chairlift drama at Crystal Mountain unfolded last weekend, my first thought was the visions I had of that happening to me, of plummeting to the ground.

Getting on and off the chair always seemed to be a stressful ordeal,

at least in my head, and I dared never look up when riding the chair, for fear of seeing what was actually holding me on the chairlift cable.

It’s been awhile Barry now, but I can rememGerding ber sitting on the black wooden chair at Mt. Baker in Washington back in the ’90s and wondering if I would fall through, never mind those old chairlifts actually collapsing.

ing while my ski partner and I just sat there swinging, looking down at the ground.

I’ve lost equipment while sitting on chairlift rides, a ski one time and ski poles on other occasions. Had many bad wipeouts, splattering myself across the bottom of the chairlift exit ramp as the next skiers had to evade me as I struggled to pull myself back on my feet.

I can remember reading about one of the worst chairlift disasters on record, the collapse of the triple chairlift at Keystone Mountain in Colorado more than 20 years ago.

That incident involved the bull wheel around which the giant ski cable was wound suddenly falling off,

sending a deadly whiplash down the chairlift comparable to a tidal wave hitting the beach.

The jam-packed triple chairs dropped several feet before rocketing upward like a sling shot, flinging 60 people up to 40 feet in the air before they crashed to the ground. In seconds, the ski hill was littered with skiers suffering from broken legs, backs, crushed chests and many other injuries.

While most skiers tend to drink wine out of a flask or smoke dope to kill the chairlift ride time, I had to stop myself from thinking how I would prepare myself should the chairlift collapse.

Health experts might diagnose me

as having chairlift anxiety, an apparent actual mental disorder that can impact you enjoyment of skiing.

The reality is ski hill chairlifts are like airplanes. Statistically it’s a very safe way to get around the ski hill and you hope all the moving parts are being properly monitored, but sometimes they do crash.

I don’t doubt the people injured last weekend at Crystal Mountain had the shock of their lives last Saturday.

Hopefully they will find the wherewithall to get back on the ski hill chairlift and be able to love skiing again. It’s a great sport, just a little challenging for some of us getting up and down the hill in more ways than one.

B.C. gov’t ‘at war’ with teachers’ union To the editor: The relationship between the B.C. government and the British Columbia Teachers Federation is revolting. And I mean that literally. There is a revolution at hand.

This revolution is not perpetrated by some rebel group against our government. It is the other way around. The BCTF was in a position of power from 1989 or so until 2002 when class size and class composition became part of the collective agreement.

After the NDP got the boot, the government, school boards and administrator groups vehemently bemoaned this “loss of the farm.” That is why

Gordon Campbell and Christy Clark took it upon themselves to strip the contract to nothing. It was like an act of war.

Now, after two court cases that have unequivocally said that this “act of war” was wrong, the government is still on the attack.

Those on the management side, consider class size and class composition to be matters of policy. The BCTF consider them to be directly related to learning and working conditions. Herein lies the conflict.

The problem, as I see it, is that they are both partially right. On the one hand, it is not up to the employee to direct the

operations of a company.

For example, if I worked for Company X that made it their policy to produce 250 widgets a day, it would not be my decision to increase or decrease the number of widgets made.

I might complain if they increased the number, but after my eight hour shift, I would just go home, or maybe work overtime.

They might say that if I didn’t like it, I could work elsewhere.

I know that many of you reading this are shuddering that I’m comparing children to widgets. Well, I’m not. I’m just making a point.

So, on the other hand, we have teachers who have no say about how

many children and those with special needs they can have in their classrooms. Their union’s argument is that this is, in fact, all about working and learning conditions.

For example, if a teacher went from 30 students, including eight students with learning disabilities, and/or behaviour problems, to 24 students including two special needs students, their work load would decrease. Who can argue against that?

But the problem is they both want to be completely in the right. Could anyone possibly imagine a world where the BCTF and the government actually worked together on this? Well, I have

news for you. You only have to drive eight hours to Alberta and find a much more collegial relationship between employer and employee. Not perfect, mind you, but maybe more professional, human, less “warlike” perhaps?

Queensway a good location for a tourist centre Open letter to Kelowna Mayor Gray and Council: I am writing this letter to offer support for the Tourism Info Centre at the west end of Queensway Avenue.

The issues that were raised when the Visitor Info Centre was proposed for the City Park location were heard by city council and staff, and now I feel that a better location is being considered that meets the criteria of a great ‘welcoming center’ for guests to our city.

I believe that the objectives and the vision reflected in the OCP and the Downtown Plan are satisfied in this proposal presented by city staff.

The criteria that Tourism Kelowna has presented for the location and function of the Visitors Centre is well-researched with real statistical information that reflects the recent evolutionary changes in the tourism industry. A strong presence and commitment to tourism is critical to our community for the thousands

of jobs sustained and the estimated $653 million in economic output produced by our local economy. I believe that anything less than an iconic, well-designed Visitors Centre in the absolute best and most effective location in Kelowna would be a grave mistake.

The location is currently asphalt parking and would serve the public better as a resource and service center for visitors.

The waterfront would be preserved in the location and design presented with

very little disruption to sight-lines. I have walked through this area numerous times over the last 27 years since owning a business in the downtown and look forward to this part of our city coming to life as it is in other parts of the downtown and the city.

I believe that all of Kelowna, our tourism operators and their employees, and our visitors will be well served by a Visitor Information Centre at this location.

I encourage council to continue to support mod-

ern and innovative opportunities in our community such as this and support the Tourism Industry and its employees in Kelowna by approving this initiative.

Many thanks to city staff and council, and to Tourism Kelowna for listening to the public concerns about the City Park site and providing us with a well-planned alternate proposal.

Local stores offer no exchange on US cash To the editor: I was in Orchard Park today and got a coffee at Blends, had a $10 American bill and said “Do you take American money?”

The response was “yes” so I gave the US money and in return got

Canadian money for change.

I questioned the clerk and she said they have no way of giving change back in American and furthermore it is a corporate policy—its got nothing to do with them.

One of the clerks was combative about the issue and I walked away saying they should bring this up with owners.

So I did a little survey in the mall and the next store said no, they have no way of taking Amer-

ican money or giving exchange.

I am not an American—just had some American money left from holidays—but I find this issue unfair to our tourists and wonder if this is common practice

However, does that number really mean that they are better off?

I don’t believe that and I’ll give my example.

Some years ago I bought

the condo I’m living at now. Within a year the value of the condo more than doubled. So my net worth went up considerably. But was I better off?

The answer is no because my income was still the same as the year before.

And, most likely, this is what pushed up the net worth especially in the prairie provinces. And the

reality is there are many whose net worth might be quite high, but they are having difficulty in making ends meet.

The more meaningful number would be the net income compared to the cost of living.

RG Properties Ltd. and Prospera Credit Union have agreed on a five-year renewal contract for the naming rights to Prospera Place in Kelowna.

The extension will retain the facility’s Prospera Place name through Janu-

ary 2019. The facility was opened in 1999 under a partnership deal between the City of Kelowna and RG Properties.

“Prospera Place has become synonymous with the City of Kelowna,” said Graham Lee, owner of RG Properties

LTD. “We have a great partnership with Prospera Credit Union and appreciate their support of, and reach into the community.

“We are very pleased to be extending our agreement, and look forward to great outcomes over the next five years.”

Prospera Credit Union has held the naming rights to the arena since 2003.

Families lose precious time before seeking a dementia diagnosis As many as 50 per cent of Canadians with dementia are not diagnosed early enough, says Carly Gronlund, support and education coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. for Kelowna and the North/Central Okanagan.

And Gronlund says that means many Kelowna residents living with dementia are losing precious time when care and support can make a tremendous difference in their quality of life.

There’s a growing urgency to the message, as more than 70,000 British Columbians already live with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia—a number that is set to double within the next 25 years as baby boomers age.

And almost three-quarters of Canadians know someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

“A diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can be devastating, but it can also bring relief,” said Gronlund.

“Early diagnosis keeps your life from unravelling. Support after diagnosis helps them gain perspective on their circumstances, fears, beliefs.”

With early diagnosis, she says people can access medications that, although not effective for everyone, have the greatest impact when taken early.

“On a practical level, an early diagnosis gives someone the chance to explain the changes happening in their life to family and friends and allows families to plan ahead,” said Gronlund.

Seeing a doctor for diagnosis can also rule out other treatable conditions, such as thyroid disease, infections, and side effects of medications, which sometime mimic dementia symptoms or behaviours.

Dillabaugh grows with the art of goaltending Warriors visit Vipers

The art of protecting a hockey net has changed substantially since Kim Dillabaugh last stood between the pipes in the WHL 17 seasons ago.

As a goaltending coach with the Kelowna Rockets and a member of the Los Angeles Kings’ staff, the 36-year-old native of Duncan has witnessed a dramatic evolution, both in the position itself and in the men who play it.

“I’m glad there’s not a lot of video around from

when I played,” laughed Dillabaugh, who played in Tacoma, Kelowna and Calgary in the WHL. “I don’t think you’d learn much from that.”

On a more serious note, Dillabaugh said, like all positions at the elite levels of sports, goaltending is continually being reshaped and redefined.

“The last several years, goaltending has been greatly overhauled,” he said. “All the changes that have happened are pretty complex and are hard to put into a few words…but the biggest difference, I’d say, are that

they are way better athletes today. Some guys are more technical in their style, some guys are more reactionary, but one thing they all have in common is that they are elite athletes. It’s not the old adage anymore of putting the guy in goal who can’t skate.”

Dillabaugh is in his 11th season as the goaltending/assistant coach with the Kelowna Rockets, and currently in his eighth year as the overseer of goaltender development for the NHL’s L.A. Kings.

The ex-goaltender

splits his time equally between the two organizations, spending about 15 days per month with each.

When he’s not at home in Kelowna mentoring and teaching Rockets’ stoppers Jordon Cooke and Jackson Whistle, Dillabaugh is providing instruction for the Kings’ top goaltending prospects with the American Hockey League’s Manchester Monarchs, based in New Hampshire.

On occasion, he also assists Kings’ goaltending coach Bill Ranford with the continued development of current L.A. netminders Jonathan Quick and Martin Jones.

Ranford, who came on board with the Kings the same season as Dillabaugh, said, like goaltending, the working relationship between the two has grown and evolved over the last eight years.

“I think Kim has a very keen eye from a technical standpoint and he’s really helped me in that regard,” said Ranford. “In working at the junior level, he has a little more leeway to work and tinker with things, and maybe come up with some schemes we can try at the pro level.

“His role has changed to the point where he’s the guy responsible for goaltender development and the young guys in our organization,” added Ranford, “and he’s been such a big part of what we’ve done over the last eight years. For me, he’s a valuable extra set of eyes, whether it’s with video or just the dialogue we have between us.”

From Dillabaugh’s perspective, working with

both Ranford and for one of junior hockey’s most successful teams have allowed him to continually grow as a coach.

“There are so many good coaches and developmental people in the game, you have to make sure you’re constantly learning and continuing to get better,” said Dillabaugh. “You can’t take anything for granted because the game is always changing. It’s good…it motivates you to learn and try stay on top of your job.

Working with Bill and the Kings, and my job here in Kelowna have both allowed me to do that.”

With a Stanley Cup ring from the Kings in 2012, along with numerous titles with the Kelowana Rockets—including a Memorial Cup and a couple of WHL championships— Dillabaugh is grateful his career choice has connected him with two winning organizations.

So with a growing résumé, and at the still rather youthful coaching age of 36, what are Dillabaugh’s future aspirations ?

“Obviously I feel fortunate to be able to do what I do and the teams I do it for,” Dillabaugh said.

“I’m no different than most coaches, that you try and get to the highest level. I am there in some small capacity now, but to be a head goalie coach in the right situation, that’s certainly a goal. Having said that, I’m content with where I am and enjoy what I do.” whenderson @kelownacapnews.com

The BCHL’s Interior Division semifinal between the West Kelowna Warriors and Vernon Vipers heads north this weekend.

Games 3 and 4 in the best-of-seven series between the Okanagan rivals are set for Friday and Saturday nights at Kal Tire Place in Vernon.

Game 2 was played Wednesday night at Royal LePage Place, however a final score wasn’t available at Capital News press time.

In the series opener Tuesday in West Kelowna, the Warriors dominated the Vipers en route to a 5-1 win. Defenceman Adam Plant had a career night with two goals and three assists, while the Warriors scored all five goals on the power play.

“I’m happy to contribute offensively but my job is to shut down the other team. If I can con-

tribute offensively once in a while, that’s great,” said Plant, who is typically more of a stay-at-home defenceman. Carl Hesler and Seb Lloyd also tallied for West Kelowna, which outshot Vernon 39-28, including 17-7 in the first period.

TJ Dumonceaux ruined Andy Desautels’ shutout bid early in the third period when he sent a rebound past the Warriors netminder.

The Warriors played Tuesday without forward Jordon Masters and defencemen Ryan Ivey and Taki Pantziris due to injuries.

Game 5 in the series will go Monday night at Royal LePage while a sixth game, if necessary, set for Tuesday March 11 back in Vernon.

A seventh game would be played Wednesday, March 12 in West Kelowna.

Young legs carry Bergman to IRA win

“I couldn’t hear (Hans), so I didn’t realize how close he was,” Bergman said. “He kind of surprised me at the end and the moment I saw him, that got my adrenalin going. I just kicked it and managed to get across the line in time.”

Bergman, who competes in track and field for the Okanagan Athletics club and at KSS, had never run in an IRA race before. It wasn’t until Saturday night, after the urging of his coach Nate Re-

iter, that Bergman signed up.

“I’m happy I decided to do it,” said Bergman. “It was nice to get that first win early in the season. I’m not sure if I’ll run in anymore, but it was a good experience.”

Reiter, who coaches Bergman with the Okanagan Athletics Club, was impressed by the young runner’s start to the season.

Bergman has been successful the last couple of years at the provincial level, competing primarily in the steeplechase and 3,000 metre distances with both KSS and OAC. Meanwhile, Aabye won the first race of the IRA season, capturing the Starting Block 10K on Feb. 16 in Lavington.

Kelowna’s John Machuga finished third overall in 17:04. Machuga was a five-time winner on the circuit last season.

The top female finisher Sunday was Vernon teenager Hannah Bennison who was ninth overall in 18:19, while Kelowna’s Christy Lovig was second in 18:33.

Silver lining for KLO girls at Grade 9 championship

It was their only loss in two full seasons of basketball. And it came in the final of the B.C. Grade 9 girls basketball championship last weekend in Vancouver.

After 66 straight wins dating back to the start of the 2012-13 season, the KLO Cougars fell 32-27 to the Windsor Dukes in the provincial final on Saturday afternoon.

Still, head coach Jay Corrado was immensely proud of the effort of his KLO team.

“We finish our twoyear run at 66-and-1,” Corrado said. “But more important we had so much fun. The girls were not sad that we did not take the gold, but sad that

the season was over.”

The Okanagan-champion Cougars opened the tournament with a convincing 59-20 win over Windermere, then handled Heritage Woods 47-35.

In the semifinal, KLO defeated the Okanagan Mission Huskies 61-29, and looked in fine form heading into the final.

But against Windsor, the Cougars couldn’t duplicate their red-hot shooting effort of the previous game.

“In the provincial championship game we did everything right but our shooting percentage dropped from a high the night before of 38 per cent and a 61-point outburst, to a tournament low of 22

per cent and 27 points,” Corrado said.

“The Windsor Dukes from North Van matched up really well and had the tournament MVP.” Jayne Reid and Alley Corrado of the Cougars earned provincial tournament all-star recognition, while KLO teammate Courtney Donaldson was named the top defensive player at the tournament.

For Jay Corrado, it’s been two rewarding seasons as the team’s coach.

“Could not have asked for a better bunch of players, parents, teacher sponsor, school admin and coaches to work with,” he said. “It was not about the win or the winning streak.

It is so much more than

that.”

Ranked fifth heading into provincials, the OKM Huskies did one better by finishing fourth at the B.C. Grade 9 girls basketball championship.

The Huskies won their opener 53-32 over Riverside, as Kiara Gaspari had 13 points, Hannah Walline added nine, and Marin Felt and Darian Mahmi scored eight each.

OKM’s second game saw the first upset of the tourney as the Huskies beat No. 4 Vedder Vipers 40-18. Gaspari led the way with 16 points.

Jerry commits to UBCO

Ryan Jerry can’t get enough of sports, and the Summerland Secondary product will continue a career in soccer after committing to play for the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s soccer team for their inaugural Canada West season this coming fall. The 5-foot-10 fullback has a well-versed multi-sport background, though soccer has become his first passion and the focus athletically.

An enjoyment of all things active including golfing, skiing, and basketball has drawn Jerry towards enrolling in the Human Kinetics program.

“Sports have alDways been a part of my life and Human Kinetics seemed to be a good option for me,” Jerry said of his scholastic ambitions tat the Kelowna campus.

“I had been told that UBC dOkanagan had a great pror n g -

gram and when I heard that Dante [Zanatta, head coach] was interested in me playing, this seemed to be a great place to continue my education.”

Jerry played most recently for the Penticton Pinnacles Football Club, whose U18 team won the provincial championship. He also helped lead his Summerland Rockets high school team to its first provincial playoff berth in eight years during the 2012 season.

The jump to the next level is an opportune time for Jerry, as the Heat will also be making a jump up to the next level of competition. “Playing university soccer has always been my main goal with the sport,” he said. “It will take some time to adjust to the speed of the game as well as the quality of play.

But I will be training hard for the rest of the year to

try and prepare myself as best as I can to be ready for the jump.” Specifically referring to the transition to Canada West, he added, “I think it will be a great new challenge and I am excited to see what will come of the change.”

“Ryan is a great example of a late developer in our sport,” said Heat coach Dante Zanatta of Jerry’s soccer development. “[He is] a great athlete but needed time to catch up with his peers on the physical side of the game.” He went on to stress his confidence in Jerry’s development, adding that “Ryan is a hard worker with a determination that will bode well as a defender but has the skill to help in the attack.”

Jerry and the rest of Heat soccer squad this fall will embark on their inaugural Canada West campaign.

Judo team effort The Kelowna Judo Club has been busy raking in its share of hardware since the start of 2014.

In January, after scoring big at the Olympic Oval at the Vancouver International with 10 athletes getting medals, KJC sent two adult athletes right back down to the Lower Mainland the following weekend. At the Pacific International at the Oval, Blaire Joseph cleaned up in the green/ blue belt division with a gold medal win, while teammate Jim Hamilton won silver in the lighter weight green/blue division.

“Both showed their competitive experience off, with some beautiful ippon techniques,” said KJC coach Kathy Hubble.

On the teen side, 13-year-old Maddie Artiss and 14-year-old Sophie DeKergommeaux just came back from B.C. Winter Games, representing Kelowna, and while neither placed in the competition, they both fought extremely well and helped their Zone 2 Okanagan team to a fourthplace finish, the highest this zone has ever placed in judo at these games.

On the kids side, nine KJC members participated in the Okanagan Regional tournament last weekend, hosted by Kelowna and Penticton Judo Clubs. Hubble congratulated Ben Hamilton, Ben Leatherdale, Josh Hamilton, Bailey Leatherdale, Maddie Artiss, Jessie Insley, Sarah Clarke, Luke Shraeder and Dion Shraeder for their efforts.

Sarah won the Judo Spirit Award while Dion won Best Technique Award.

Coaches Hubble and Stu Leatherdale were proud of these little athletes as they showed the true spirit of judo, the sportsmanship and camaraderie that comes with being a good judoka. The two coaches also commended the efforts of Blaire, Nikki, Jim and Lisa who came to help out as well.

“Judo is one of those few sports out there where you can combine all ages, sizes, shapes, and abilities, and go to competitions together and support one another so well, creating a great bond among athletes—even if it isn’t a team sport, there is a great team atmosphere,” said Hubble.

Public input on Pandosy waterfront development/park options winding up Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

Time is running out for Kelowna residents to give their opinions about the work done recently at an urban planning workshop looking at the future of the south Pandosy waterfront.

Residents have until tomorrow to visit Kelowna City Hall to see the four models of possible future scenarios created by 30 charrette participants. Visitors can also view the participants’ design drawings.

Feedback about the designs will be collected until tomorrow.

Next week, city staff will start reviewing the feedback about the project that has been collected since January through emails, phone calls, the city’s online engagement tool, as well as two public review sessions following each day of the charrette

and an open house that followed it and was attended by more than 250 people.

The open house drew a mixed response from many in attendance, with some liking what they saw and others opposed, in large part because of two suggestions to move the current alignment of Abbott Street in the area to carve off portions of the properties currently owned by the city along the lakeshore.

While all four proposals call for the city-owned lots along the lakeshore to be turned into a park, they also include selling parts of the properties to allow for development that could be used, in turn, to pay to create the park.

The suggestions also include, as per council’s instructions, space for a Kelowna paddle sports centre.

Heading into the charrette, city council mandated participants to

make sure their suggestions were revenue neutral.

But the group that led the opposition to a city plan to allow development on parts of the land three years ago, People For The Park, also submitted a proposal that calls for leaving Abbott Street where it is and using all the land—11 lots that the city owns north and south of Cedar Avenue—for the park.

The input from the public, as well as the work of the charrette volunteers—representatives of several area and city-wide groups, as well as five residents at large chosen at random from nearly 50 applicants who wanted to participate—will be analyzed and provided to city council in April.

have recovered from your injuries? Why else would you stop attending for recommended physiotherapy, massage therapy or chiropractic care?

I have no medical training either, but Dr. Paul’s medical advice is to follow the medical recommendations of your treatment team without any regard for what the defending insurance company might “authorize.”

How do you pay for care that the insurance company doesn’t “authorize?” That’s when “beg, borrow or steal” comes in.

Your first resort is to the cheap line of credit financing you can hopefully get from your bank.

If your injuries disabled you from continuing with work and interrupted your income flow, though, good luck with that.

Next resort is offering a fair interest rate to family members who might want to earn more than the two per cent interest they are likely earning on their savings.

If that avenue isn’t open to you, swallow your pride and approach friends who might be willing to make some money off of you.

Loans from friends and family can be secured by way of an irrevocable assignment of the small portion of your claim that will be needed to pay them back.

However reluctant the insurance company might be to authorize and pay for medical care up front, they will always have to reimburse you for reasonably incurred medical expenses when your claim finally is resolved.

If those options are exhausted, you turn to a private lender if you can find one, though you can count on paying high (15 per cent) interest plus processing fees.

A last resort is commercial lenders who seem to prey on vulnerable victims by charging much more exorbitant interest rates. However exorbitant, though, it is worth it to get the medical care you need to achieve as full and speedy a recovery as is possible.

Accident investigation continues, chairlift remains closed Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

The BC Safety Authority is continuing its investigation at Crystal Mountain Resort regard-

ing Saturday’s chairlift incident that injured four people.

But, as of Wednesday, the chairlift was still not operational.

Quinn Newcomb,

leader of communications and media relations with BC Safety Authority, said significant damage to the chairlift has prevented BC Safety Authority from carrying out the

next phase of their investigation.

“The challenge is getting it repaired enough so that it can operate to perform testing and analysis,” said Newcomb.

Scott Henderson, spokesman for Crystal Mountain Resort, confirmed the hill would be closed Thursday and Friday, but said he was unsure about the weekend.

Newcomb wasn’t willing to give an estimated timeline of how long the investigation could take.

“We’re taking it day by day,” said Newcomb.

“This type of incident is so rare. It’s just a matter of getting the right engineering experts up there to work on getting the equipment back up and oper-

ational again.”

According to Henderson, the ski hill was initially expected to be open until at least March 16.

“Sometimes they can remain open longer, depending on demand and conditions,” said Henderson.

He noted management at Crystal Mountain are still optimistic the ski hill will re-open before that date; however, they are waiting to see the results of BC Safety Authority’s investigation.

al Hospital Saturday after three chairs from the lift plummeted to the ground.

One of the mountain’s ski patrollers who was most seriously hurt in the accident is recovering from her injuries, noted Henderson.

Green Bay Bible Camp wants shoeboxes for time capsule project Green Bay Bible Camp is looking to turn 400 ordinary shoeboxes into time capsules for families this summer.

The camp has already turned to Jim Belshaw, owner of Roy’s Shoes in downtown Kelowna, for assistance in collecting the shoeboxes.

Belshaw, who is also the founder of Soles4Souls Canada, is used to collecting thousands of shoes for those in need every year.

Now he’s asking for the boxes those shoes come in to be donat-

ed as well, in order to help out the camp.

“I’ve already got 100 boxes coming out from Vancouver,” said Belshaw.

“I got a donation of 100 pairs of brand new shoes—they are keeping them in the boxes for me.”

He said he will happily accept shoeboxes—with or without shoes in them—at Roy’s Shoes until Green Bay Bible Camp reaches their goal of 400 shoeboxes.

This summer, the plan is for those families to make their own time capsules, which may be opened a couple years down the road.

On the day Roberto Luongo is traded from the Vancouver Canucks to Florida, Paul Luongo and his brother, Mark, are making waves of a different kind.

The heirs to a ukulele dynasty in the Lower Mainland, they are preparing to take the family passion slightly north and bring the little instrument, or at least their five ensembles, to Kelowna.

They’re holding a benefit concert to strum up support for a flood of new ukulele players locally.

“It’s the underdog of instruments,” said Paul.

“When you hear a ukulele, you probably don’t think much music can come out of it, but we play it all.”

Lining up kids to tackle everything from Elvis to Brahms, the young players in the

Langley ensembles have been bringing the sweet sound of the ukulele to audiences for 30 years under the direction of Mark and Paul’s father.

Paul has now taken over the Langley wing and Mark is starting a new program here in Kelowna with the support of a West Kelowna elementary school principal, John McMahon.

“We play Queen— Bohemian Rhapsody will definitely make an appearance—Chuck Barry, the Beatles,” said Paul.

The Beatles were big ukulele fans. George Harrison was an advocate, Paul notes, and Paul McCartney is currently playing one.

To say he’s a wealth of knowledge on the instrument is an understatement as he quickly points out a few of the ways the uke is making its presence known in popular music.

topping the iTunes charts are strumming away; although Paul and Mark’s ensembles can reputedly play Glenn Miller as well.

“We’re recognized as one of the top, if not the top, ensemble in the world,” Paul said.

There is method—beyond encouraging students to practice—to their madness. The Luongo brothers say their ultimate goal is to showcase some of the awesome things young people are involved in that don’t make the news.

And they are holding a concert with the Langley Ukulele groups in Kelowna to raise funds to expand the school program they have running on the Coast.

“There’s a whole corridor of schools on the Westside who are lining up to do this,” said Mark, who recently moved to the area.

Five elementary schools—George Prin-

gle, Hudson Road, Chief Tomat, Rose Valley and Shannon Lake—will likely make up the pilot program. A member of Music BC’s charitable foundation is currently pulling together funding to get the project underway, and proceeds from this concert will go directly to the effort, dubbed Playing for our Heartstrings.

Mark has also started an adult group in Kelowna, the Uke-anagan Pickers, and has been teaching local teachers to play as part of their professional development.

s far as filmmakers go, Frank Miller is not a household name. He is best described as the Spielberg, Kubrick or Scorsese of the comic book industry as he is responsible for re-imagining characters like Daredevil, Wolverine, Batman and even Superman into the characters that we know in movies today.

He is also known for creating the character of Elektra as well as the graphic novels Sin City and 300.

When Sin City was turned into a movie in 2005 by Robert Rodriguez, Miller was credited as co-director as his graphic novel was so closely followed. It was mainly filmed on what is called a “digital backlot,” meaning it was mostly shot in front of a green screen with most of the backgrounds and some of the foreground created with computers to help give it the feel of the graphic novel.

Two years later, the adaptation of 300 used similar techniques, using a digital backlot to help recreate the imagery of the graphic novel and

Based upon the Battle of Thermopylae during the Persian Wars, 300 was a worldwide hit and a sequel was inevitable. Miller was brought back as writer and producer on 300: Rise of an Empire, using his unpublished follow-up to the original graphic novel for the story.

Set prior to, during and after the events of the original film, 300: Rise of an Empire sees Greek general Themistokles attempting to unite all of Greece by leading the charge against the invading Persian army led by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes.

After the surprise success of The Lego Movie, it will be interesting to see how both kids and adults respond to the next big

animated offering, Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

It is getting almost as good reviews as Lego, but the characters, which had their own segment in The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show in the 1960s, are not nearly as familiar to the current generation of children.

It does have some pretty good talent behind it as it is from DreamWorks Animation (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon), it is directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) and features the voices of Ty Burrell, Leslie Mann and Stephen Colbert.

The story has Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine to go on outrageous adventures. But when Sherman takes the time machine for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe by wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history.

I have been experimenting in my own kitchen lately, trying to find the ultimate, healthy but tasty muffin. Thanks to a base recipe for banana, honey muffins shared by my fabulous Facebook friend, Calgary-based cookbook author Julie Van Rosendaal, I know have a delicious, healthy winner.

The great thing about this recipe is that it is super versatile. I have varied my measurements of chopped apples, blueberries, chopped dates, chopped dried apricots, shredded coconut and varied the amount 3of chia seeds, flax seeds and hemp hearts. I have also used pumpkin seeds, sliced almonds and sunflower seeds on top—no matter what, every version is delicious, just stick to the basic measurements.

Julie’s trick of using three bananas is the key— it not only makes them healthier, it keeps them moist too. Julie added honey to her recipe but I find them sweet enough

on their own. Enjoy.

BANANA LOVE MUFFINS

Wet ingredients: In a large bowl, mash 3 very ripe bananas with 1/8 cup canola oil, 1 large egg and 1 tsp vanilla.

Dry Ingredients: Add 1 1/2 cups Anita’s organic sprouted spelt flour, 1 tsp baking soda and 1/4 tsp salt.

Plus some or all of the following: 1/2 cup shredded fancy coconut 3-4 tbsp Chia seeds 2 tbsp hemp hearts 2 tbsp tsp flax seed Extras: chopped dates blueberries dried apricots chopped apples (I like Ambrosias because they keep their crunch) Divide between eight paper-lined large muffin cups (probably 10 smaller ones) poking 4-5 blueberries and/or and a couple of pieces of dates or apples or apricots into them.

Top with pumpkin seeds, sliced almonds or sunflower seeds (optional).

Bake at 375 F for 22 minutes.

Agur Lake Camp Society (ALCS) is actively looking to recruit new board members to be elected at their AGM in April, 2014. Would you like to take up the challenge?

Five years ago I became a joiner. I had just moved to Summerland and felt a need for social contacts. I set about locating groups where I might feel at home.

ALCS back then was planning a facility in the wilderness where people with disabilities could camp like they had never camped before.

I attended events on site and imagined what it might be like to be a camper there. I was asked to be on their board of directors. They wanted me to work on a dream with them and to help them

make it happen.

I had some useful skills and experience. I was a photographer, a writer and had experience with managing websites.

And I had lived my life with a disability, so I saw things from a unique perspective.

I found myself caught up in an ongoing series of meetings, events, work-parties and plain old-fashioned socializing.

I am turning 80 this year and I resign from the board, comforted by the

knowledge that someone out there will replace me and get to enjoy the sense of accomplishment that working for ALCS has brought me.

ALCS now has a site by a lake with two cabins and its first campers were welcomed last summer.

We Are All A little Bit Dishonest I was intrigued by a study recently published by an American psychologist. He had rigged a vending machine so that whenever a customer paid the price and made a selection, not only did that person get the candy they selected but the machine also spit the money the patron had put into the machine into the change return. A sign was placed on the machine that asked patrons to call the owner at a specified telephone number if they spotted problems with the machine. He sat back and collected the data. He reported that out of the 1,100 people who used the machine, not one person called to report the problem.

He reported that about half of the people took their candy and the money they had put in the machine and merrily went on their way.

The other half had put their money into the machine two or three more times, taking back the money they had put into the machine and the candy they had selected. About a quarter of the users phoned a friend, who also came to get candy and the money they had put in the machine back. A very small minority of this group, two people, used their money to get seven or eight candy bars each.

The host of the program interviewing the psychologist pressed him to shed light on the experiment. What did it mean? What were its implications? The researcher was surprised that virtually every subject so easily committed a crime. Once money was placed in the machine in exchange for the candy, the money belonged to the owner of the vending machine. Those that took the money and the candy had committed a petty theft and broken the law. He seemed relieved that a clear majority of people were restrained enough to limit their pilfering to one candy bar. He was disappointed in those that milked the malfunctioning machine for more than one candy bar and especially those who phoned a friend. He expressed relief that there were so few ‘big time’ petty thieves. Any user could have emptied the machine yet the biggest pilferers kept their haul to 7 or 8 candy bars.

The overall finding of his experiment was that: “We are all a little dishonest.”

He believed that the subjects who were content to take one candy bar and the money they had put into the machine, had rationalized their situation. They remembered the times that they had put money into a vending machine and had not received their candy bar.

They were simply ‘evening-up the score’ when they took this candy bar plus the money they had put into the machine. Those that took more than one candy bar, he said, were clearly milking the situation. Their conscience was not bothered by the loss that would be suffered by the machine’s owner. To them, it was a perfect crime: how would anyone ever know that they had taken some loot without paying for it? He believed that those who took more than one candy bar and then phoned a friend,

wanted to share their windfall but also wanted to share the guilt. The fact that a friend would also take advantage of this situation eased any guilt they may have felt.

The researcher asked the host and the audience to consider the implications of his study for government, industry, commerce and the retail business. Most people believe that they, and most of the people around them, are pretty good and honest people. Our focus, individually and as a society, is thus placed on the people who are the brazen criminals and the embezzlers; the ones that steal or embezzle a lot. The criminal and civil judicial system would focus on the subjects of the experiment that took the seven or eight candy bars. They would prosecute and punish them, making an example of them, with the surety that the apprehension and punishment of big time criminals would act as a deterrent to the others. However, our researcher asked all those who believe this to look at the data he collected. The economic damage to the owner of the vending machine caused by the two subjects who took 15-16 candy bars between them is a mere drop in the bucket and completely insignificant when compared to the damage caused by the 549 in the experiment who limited their theft to 1 bar and the remaining 549 subjects that took 2-4 candy bars. The researcher concluded that the damage caused by ‘big time’ or career criminals and embezzlers is just a drop in the bucket when compared to the impact of the petty larcenies and sins we commit with impunity every day.

The researcher was bang on with his conclusions. For centuries, the Holy Bible has taught that we are all dishonest in our relations with others, with ourselves and with God. We fool ourselves into believing we are basically good people. Yet when we are ‘tested’(that is, when we find ourselves in a situation where lying, cheating and/or stealing provides an advantage that we believe can’t be detected), more often than we are willing to admit, we fall prey to the temptation and lie, cheat and steal. If we are honest with ourselves, we will often invent excuses for our blatant sinning in order to soothe our conscience and justify our behaviors if our malfeasance becomes known to others.

The author of the study was right on the money when he concluded that, because most of us see ourselves as basically good people, we tend to focus our wrath and indignation on those of us that are brazen enough to sin boldly and get caught. We compare ourselves to the public sinners and come off pretty good. We demand that they be punished for what they have been done and that they should pay back all those that they have hurt.

We insist on a justice that demands: “If you commit the crime, you have to do the time.”

Jesus has a problem with this view of life: “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

When we focus on others, we fail to see our own sins, particularly the little sins; the petty thefts, little lies, inappropriate fantasies, and the times we ‘hardly cheated at all’. We fail to see that all the little sins add up over time. If each of our little sins were represented by a marble, by the time we reach our golden years, the sack it would take to hold all the marbles would be rather a large sack. I know mine is. In its own way, each little sin I committed impacted my life and conscience, and the consciences and lives of those touched by each sin. Just think of all the people I impacted with my petty sins. The cumulative impact of my sins is huge. Now add in the billions of other people in this world and their sins and those whom they hurt. The impact of all the little sins in the world is devastating. What do we do with all of these little sins? Doesn’t justice require I be punished for each of my sins? Shouldn’t I be made to provide restitution for those I injured? The answer is yes! However, there are problems. Who will judge me and punish me? How can I go back and make it right? I can’t undo what I have done. Many whom I have sinned against are either gone or can’t be reached easily.

I believe that God will judge and punish everyone for all their sins. However, God provides a way out through His Son, Jesus Christ who suffers for our sins and all that He requires is that you believe that. God provides a way to help me each day with my struggle with sin. I can pray as King David did: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10). David understood that he could not will himself to be a better person. David knew that God had to create something new in him. God had to take away his sin and put a willingness to follow God within David, from the outside.

I draw for you a quote from a management text in my library that goes like this: “He who knows no hardship will know no power of endurance; he who faces no calamity will need no courage; mysterious though it is, the characteristics in human nature which we all love best grow in a soil with a strong mixture of troubles.”

Let this be our number one entrepreneurial rule—can you stick it out when the going gets tough? When those obstacles appear before us, the same message comes out: “Don’t give up the ship.”

Please remember, adversity is different for each of us. For some, it means not meeting the entrepreneurial goals we have set out, for others it’s running out of money and not being able to make the new venture launch occur.

So when faced with adversity, your first step might be to summon forth the courage and inspiration that came from your original vision.

People developing deficit disorder from not relating to nature

R

ecently the CBC had some coverage of a phenomenon called nature deficit disorder (NDD).

The acronym is reminiscent of some of the names we have chosen for various psychiatric diagnoses and it caught my attention.

NDD is not an official

Paul Latimer disorder or diagnosis in any medical terminology.

It is a name given to describe what some see to be the growing disconnect between humans (particularly children) and nature.

Richard Louv is a journalist and non-fiction writer who coined the term NDD in 2005 and he has written a couple of books about it, his most famous being Last Child

in the Woods.

He says evidence points to a relationship between decreasing time spent in nature with an increase in conditions such as depression and ADHD in children.

These days, children seem to spend a lot less time engaged in simple imaginative play outside.

More and more people live in urban centres where access to green space may not be as readily at hand as it was for previous generations.

Parents are also increasingly fearful of letting children stray too far for fear of what may happen.

Instead of sending children to roam outside, kids are put in highly organized activities (often indoors). And of course the lure of our electronic devices is likely one of the biggest culprits keeping kids inside more than they

were in the past.

Some estimates say Canadian kids are spending an average of more than 40 hours a week engaged with media compared to about eight hours of physical activity—with not all of that occurring outside.

Aside from the increased incidence of childhood obesity linked to a more sedentary lifestyle, some evidence is also showing time in nature is an independent factor for health benefits.

They believe the benefits will include healthier, happier kids with fewer attention problems and improved cognitive functioning.

Research will continue into this subject to quantify benefits and negative outcomes related to the amount of time we spend in nature.

It will certainly take some time before schools adopt formal programs to ensure kids are getting outside every day.

In the meantime, families can take simple, free steps to increase their own time outside.

We are fortunate to live in one of the most naturally beautiful places imaginable.

There are parks everywhere and nature crowds in around us on all sides.

Truly, there are activities for any taste with our beautiful lakes, rivers, mountains and forests.

I encourage you to get out and enjoy what our region has to offer.

It may be good for your physical and mental health—and you’ll probably have fun in the meantime too.

GILL, HARBHAJAN KAUR Harbhajan Kaur passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Friday February 28, 2014 at the age of 75. She is now reunited with her loving brother Sukhdev Singh and sister Jagir Kaur. Survived by her loving husband Harcharan Singh, daughters Pawan (Harchand) Chahal of Kelowna, Raman (Rupinder) Dhillon of Winnipeg, son Akaljot “AJ” (Harbinder) Gill of Kelowna, grandchildren Reena, Navi, Sunny, Esha, Ajay, Akash, Sean, Hannah, sister Gurdev (Gurbakash) Grewel of India and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was born in Pind Heran to Bishan Kaur and Baba Dasoundha Singh village Boparai Kalan, she was the youngest child of 4 siblings. Harbhajan taught for many years before moving to Canada in 1988. She lived in Winnipeg and recently moved to Kelowna in 2009. She had many friends and believed in healthy living and was a regular at Parkinson Rec. Center. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 9:30 am at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Centre for the Southern Interior, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 5L3.

She will be missed by her loving family, her children: Julia (Steve), Lynda (Bob), Wade (Charmaine), Gary (Elaine), Sandra (Pat), Sheila (Rudy), and Sylvia (Ken), numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Also survived by her sister Helen (Elmer) and brothers: Harvey (Theresa) and Don (Peggy), numerous nieces, nephews and great friends. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. École Casorso School gripped by portal-mania!

On Monday, January 6, returning to school after the holiday break we discovered a portal in the Casorso library.

The portal appeared in a little-used storage area and looked like a tunnel entrance six feet high and four feet wide that narrowed to a glowing, blue spiral space that seemed to go off into infinity – or somewhere otherworldly. Students heard gentle pings and rushing noises as they peered into the portal, and some even described different scents emitted by the strange apparition. Students were intrigued!

Following its appearance, we asked all students to write about their experience, using the following prompt: You walk into the Casorso library and step through a magical portal that takes you somewhere else, either now, or in some other time. You might be yourself, another person, or a creature. Tell about your adventure.

A group of 10 teachers working with our Vice-Principal Mr. Peter Gallo have since assessed approximately 90 of those writing pieces collected from each of our classes in preparation for creating a writing continuum for our school. The purpose of this continuum is to help students clearly identify successful elements in their writing and directions for further growth. Regardless of where students find themselves on the continuum, our ultimate goal is that each of them sees him/herself as a writer!

The portal vanished at the end of that week – disappearing as magically as it had appeared. Fortunately, thanks to our Principal Mr. Charles Schneider, we have a life-size picture of the portal hanging in the library as a memento of that exciting, mysterious and inspiring event at École Casorso School.

The Central Okanagan Regional District is still looking to speak with Kelowna Mountain’s developer before its grand opening this spring, though it is pleased the mountain will not force a change in its bylaws.

Last week the courts found in favour of the district as developer Mark Consiglio fought to ensure the bylaw was not tight enough to hamper use of the grand Italian villa he’s using for a welcome centre or the accompanying amenities he’s added to the property.

• Find enjoyment, every day. Reading, watching a movie, playing the piano; something that’s for you!

• Stay healthy. A well balanced diet coupled with age appropriate exercise is a powerful coping mechanism for added stress.

• Socialize. One of the most common symptoms of burnout is withdrawal. Connect with family and friends on a regular basis.

• Get Help. It’s common for caregivers to feel they’re the only one that knows exactly how to care for their loved one. Other family members, friends and professional caregivers can add value, meaning and much needed respite. Everyone should enjoy the experience.

What should a person do after a motor vehicle accident?

Injury to the neck and spine are common in acceleration/deceleration traumas. This is commonly called whiplash. Whiplash symptoms are pain, stiffness, numbness and often headaches. There can be symptoms in the jaw region as well. After a motor vehicle accident symptoms usually occur immediately after trauma but some may develop symptoms weeks after the initial trauma. Women are at a greater risk of injury than men in motor vehicle accidents.

Unfortunately the seemingly severity of the crash does not directly correlate the true severity of the injury in all cases.

Research has shown that early intervention and restoration of movement is the most effective treatment plan for whiplash injuries. It is important to consult your doctor of chiropractic as soon as possible after any spinal trauma for an examination and a plan for recovery. Prevention of injury is also very important. Make sure your seatbelt is on; air bags are functioning and your head rest is close to your head and at the height of your ears. Drive defensively and obey speed limit advice. Always avoid distractions from within the vehicle as well as external distractions.

When teeth are removed and dentures are placed, the body automatically recognizes it no longer needs to maintain the present bone levels and bone continues to resorb over your lifetime. The less bone there is the less retention is available to support the dentures, especially on the lower ridge. The most ideal way to solve this problem is to have implants placed to help retain the dentures. These are titanium posts surgically placed into the jaw bone so that dentures can be anchored onto them for stability. Implants are a bit of a financial investment but the resulting improvement in the quality of life is worth it.

Green Bay Bible Camp is looking to turn 400 ordinary shoeboxes into time capsules for families this summer.

The camp has already turned to Jim Belshaw, owner of Roy’s Shoes in downtown Kelowna, for assistance in collecting the shoeboxes.

Belshaw, who is also the founder of Soles4Souls Canada, is used to collecting thousands of shoes for those in need every year. Now he’s asking for the boxes those shoes come in to be donated as well, in order to help out the camp.

I was thinking about re-facing my kitchen instead of getting a whole new kitchen can you tell me the Pros & Cons please!

Great question! So let’s start with what a “re-faced kitchen exactly is...it is when you keep the “guts” or boxes and replace all the doors and drawer fronts with new ones, it can and usually does involve a new color, with added features such as Crown molding, light valances etc… So, an average price of a “Re-faced” kitchen will starts at around 70% of a brand new complete kitchen. i.e. if a new kitchen will cost you $10,000.00, a refaced kitchen will start at a cost of approximately $ 7,000.00 “The Pros” to re-facing are as follow; if you changed your countertop to an expensive material such as Granite, Corian, Quartz, etc…recently and don’t want to change it again as removing it could cause damage, same goes for a new backsplash, or possibly flooring if your kitchen is older it may very well have a depth that is less than the new cabinets. Finally a great reason to not get a new kitchen would be if you have a really well made kitchen and it just needs sprucing up. In this case, I would not reface but I would have a professional painting company (again get references and do your due diligence) to come in and paint/stain the boxes and take the doors to their shop to do them in a professional studio. I would get new hardware and possibly new drawer tracks so that they fully extend. The Cons to re-facing your kitchen would be as follows; since the cost is almost as much as a the cost of new kitchen, why not spend the extra 30% or less and get everything brand new. If you want to increase your storage etc, you can change your cabinets to include more drawers and or pull-outs that fully extend and have soft close etc… you can have this with a reface as well, but that increases the cost and the 70% starts going up. If you have any corner cabinets especially base cabinets, there are so many great options that will leave you loving the corner cabinets we have today, yes! It’s true there are great options to corner cabinets these days. Even if you cannot change your layout, I guarantee you that a good designer can increase your storage space by a minimum of 25%.

It was their only loss in two full seasons of basketball. And it came in the final of the B.C. Grade 9 girls basketball championship last weekend in Vancouver.

After 66 straight wins dating back to the start of the 2012-13 season, the KLO Cougars fell 32-27 to the Windsor Dukes in the provincial final on Saturday afternoon.

Still, head coach Jay Corrado was immensely proud of the effort of his KLO team.

“We finish our twoyear run at 66-and-1,” Corrado said. “But more important we had so much fun. The girls were not sad that we did not take the gold, but sad that the season was over.”

The Okanagan-champion Cougars opened the tournament with a convincing 59-20 win over Windermere, then handled Heritage Woods 47-35.

In the semifinal, KLO defeated the Okanagan Mission Huskies 61-29, and looked in fine form heading into the final.

But against Windsor, the Cougars couldn’t duplicate their red-hot shooting effort of the previous game.

“In the provincial championship game we did everything right but our shooting percentage dropped from a high the night before of 38 per cent and a 61-point outburst, to a tournament low of 22 per cent and 27 points,” Corrado said.

“The Windsor Dukes from North Van matched up really well and had the tournament MVP.” Jayne Reid and Alley Corrado of the Cougars earned provincial tournament all-star recognition, while KLO teammate Courtney Donaldson was named the top defensive player at the tournament.

For Jay Corrado, it’s been two rewarding seasons as the team’s coach.

“Could not have asked for a better bunch of players, parents, teacher sponsor, school admin and coaches to work with,” he said. “It was not about the win or the winning streak.

It is so much more than that.”

Ranked fifth heading into provincials, the OKM Huskies did one better

by finishing fourth at the B.C. Grade 9 girls basketball championship.

The Huskies won their opener 53-32 over Riverside, as Kiara Gaspari had 13 points, Hannah Walline added nine, and Marin Felt and Darian Mahmi scored eight each.

OKM’s second game saw the first upset of the tourney as the Huskies beat No. 4 Vedder Vipers 40-18. Gaspari led the way with 16 points.

In the semifinals, OKM fell to their local rivals, KLO, 61-29. Gaspari led her team with 18.

In the bronze medal game, Lord Tweedsmuir defeated the Huskies 4631.

Gaspari and Marin Felt had seven points each, while Kim Belanger had six.

named a tournament allstar, while Hannah Walline earned honourable mention.

“It is actually the games we lost that I am most proud of with this young group of ladies,” said OKM coach Stewart Walline. “They developed more from those two games than anything else they did all season long. They played hard and supported each other for every second of every game and to me that kind of personal development is priceless.”

Walline also thanked OKM teacher and senior girls head coach Meghan Faust “for establishing and running the highly unique basketball P.E. program at OKM which is changing the dynamics of OKM basketball in its entirety.”

Rose Valley Elementary students have been getting the education necessary to transform them into young entrepreneurs.

PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs and Valley First launched a six-week comprehensive educational program for Rose Valley students earlier this year.

The program utilized project-based learning techniques to support an early understanding of money management, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

The program was developed and designed for Grade 3 to Grade 8 students to

generate ideas, explore concepts, prepare business plans, create products and design marketing materials.

On Monday, March 10, Rose Valley students will showcase their achievements at a PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs trade show, selling their products to students, family and community leaders.

The trade show takes place in the Rose Valley Elementary gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; products are available for purchase, ranging in price from 50 cents to $5.

Classics come to West Kelowna Acclaimed Canadian pianist Dr. Dale Wheeler of Red Deer, will play at Grace Lutheran Church, 1162 Hudson Rd., Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m.

Wheeler holds a doctorate in piano performance and pedagogy and is currently on faculty at Red Deer College.

He recently presented at the European Piano

Teachers Association Conference in Serbia and conducted master classes in South Korea.
