LUNAR NEW YEAR 2021 February 12—The Year Of The Metal Ox

T

he Lunar New Year, typically celebrated in China and other Asian countries, begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. Lunar New Year 2021 is on February 12 and it’s the Year of the Metal Ox. Since 2020 was the Year of the Metal Rat, and we know how devastating that year was, the Metal Ox year will be a year filled with many payoffs as long as there is hard work and determination. There’s a reason why they say plod on like an ox.

In the Chinese Zodiac, the Ox is very hardworking and methodical. 2021 is going to be a year when those who work hard will get rewarded and those who will be lucky in terms of money will be the ones that make a considerable effort. Because this year is a metal year, the color of the year is white. Other lucky colors include green, brown, gold and yellow. Wearing these colors will increase your luck this year and wearing metal accessories will increase your luck even more!

The Year of the Metal Ox is a fabulous year for love! A marriage started in this year will be strong and long-lasting. For those that are single, it’s a great time to meet your soulmate.

PLAYERS TALK Q: Dear AZ Gaming Guide, I had to write in to you right away because I just had the most unusual interaction with an employee at [a casino]. I called and asked to be connected to someone in the Player’s Club. A young gentleman answered the phone and my question to him was the following: When does your new gaming day start and end? I was taken aback when he told me that he couldn’t tell me! Not that he didn’t know, but that he wasn’t allowed to tell me! “What!?! That’s absurd,” I said. “Why can’t you tell me?” I insisted!

The reason for my question was that my wife and I wanted to participate in a “Play & Earn” promotion. The first person to reach a certain number of points on their card on a certain day received a prize. This person was being evasive and didn’t answer my question so I ended the conversation. The next day I called back and talked to a young lady. She gave me two different times and I was left even more confused after the phone call with her!

I’m not sure what’s the big deal in me knowing when the points I’ve earned are reset to zero? I’ve learned over the years that some casinos start the new day at midnight and some don’t start until well into the night, like around 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. I want to know from you if this is a way that the casino can cheat us out of points we’ve made without us being aware? … [A casino] gives bonus tier credits based on how many points I’ve earned and [another casino] multiplies the tier credits on certain days. Both casinos have told me what is the latest time we can earn points before the casino starts over at zero. So, I don’t understand why the big secrecy with [this casino]? They gave me an explanation, but to be honest with you I couldn’t explain to you what they said because it was all confusing to me. With your knowledge and experience, I hope you can shed some light on this for me.

Danny Mitchell—From Email A: Thanks Danny for your extremely important question. We’re not surprised you are now confused based on the conversations you describe and the experiences you relate across the casinos you frequent! We’d be confused too.

In our opinion, knowing when a casino begins their “day” is important. And, when we say “day” we specifically mean when the player tracking system and point earning begins its next 24 hour period. Regardless of if you play slots, video poker, keno, bingo, table games, or live poker, this time is important.

A casino’s “day” may start at midnight, or any other time, as you point out. Some casinos we have visited begin their day at 6 a.m.! Knowing this time and sticking to it while you earn points can mean the difference between a big offer or a small one.

Let’s break this down a little by pretending we are playing at a casino whose “day” begins at 3 a.m., which is a typical time used by many casinos. You are merrily playing away since 5 p.m. on your favorite slot, you’re winning, and keep playing.

It’s now 2:45 a.m. and across multiple slots (or even the same one), you’ve earned 5,000 points. Since you’ve had to take your card out to change games, during long bonuses, for hand pays, etc., the 5,000 points have been banked into the player tracking system across the “day” in various amounts since 5 p.m.

If you stop now, the casino’s system will look at your play and see 5,000 points in one “day” and issue offers accordingly on that amount of play. If you don’t stop and play past 3 a.m. into the new “day” and quit earning points at say 4 a.m., your offers will not necessarily be based on 5,000 points of play. Obviously, you’ll have earned some points between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. (let’s pretend 500 points were earned) and the casino’s system will see 5,000 points on one “day” and 500 on another. When generating offers, most casino systems will look at average play per day. So, averaging your play (5,000 + 500 = 5,500, divided by 2 is 2,750) you end up with 2,750 points per day. Wouldn’t you rather be a 5,000 point player than a 2,750 point player?

Also, if you show up to a casino and just use comps, spend the night, get a gift, and don’t play to earn points, the casino’s system will register that as a 0 for their “day.” So beware! Averaging 5,000 with 0 produces an even lower number of 2,500 points per “day.” Know what time the casino’s “day” begins and adjust your play, especially if you will be leaving soon.

Don’t ask casino employees vaguely about the “gaming day.”

Well-trained employees are instructed not to discuss it as the “gaming day” exists to deter money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes in order to comply with Title 31 (the Bank Secrecy Act), originally issued in 1985, but modernized since then to include all casinos in the United States.

The “gaming day” may or may not start at the same time as the “day” we describe above for a very important reason. Title 31 exists to track cash transactions of $10,000, or more, in one 24 hour period. This includes multiple individual transactions that accumulate to $10,000 or more. So, for those of you who have won three jackpots of $3,000, then $4,000, and finally $5,000 during the “gaming day,” the casino will fill out additional paperwork on your transactions as they totaled more than $10,000.

That’s why if you present a large slot ticket at a kiosk, you may be instructed to proceed to the cage, where the cashier may ask for ID and make a record of your transaction. We’ve had this happen at some casinos for slot tickets of $1,000. At other casinos, the kiosks cash tickets up to $3,000 before forcing patrons to the cashier. This also happens when you cash in table game chips. Title 31 is a law to deter money laundering and it can cause confusion with casino employees. When asking about the “day,” don’t say “gaming day,” and make sure to talk about earning points for the players club. THE AGE OF NO-DEALER CRAP GAMES Reasonable Bets. Amazing Payouts. Great Fun.

T

he age of electronic table games is upon us, with fewer open games and crowd restrictions. So, you might be thinking about trying bubble craps, the electronic games with the giant fuzzy dice (alright, they aren't really fuzzy). If you've played live craps, you know it's the one table in a casino where you can yell and scream, and nobody cares.

And, the average game in Las Vegas zaps you for a $15 minimum wager on a Pass Line bet. Ouch.

With electronic craps in Arizona, the bets are much more reasonable. The limits are usually capped at $35 or $39, so you won't find yourself with a $200 Pass bet and 5x odds. If you can dial down your expectations a bit, you can enjoy playing for just a buck. Even Odds and Place bets start at $1.

That might help me since I remember my wife saying, "Hey, let's play some Blackjack" after we had dinner in Las Vegas one night. I declined, gave her a hundred bucks, and wandered off.

In ten minutes, I managed to lose $1,200 at a "live" craps game.

But I digress.

The Lure of the Streak Electronic craps have everything, but the yelling, including an annoying little feature that tells me things like "Hard Eight, has not hit for 78 rolls," which makes me want to bet it immediately.

Of course, thinking it's going to roll now is the classic gambler fallacy: Because something hasn't happened for a long time, it is more likely to happen soon. Sorry, it's the same odds every roll.

Bummer.

Still, you can quickly learn the ins and outs of craps on the cheap with no-dealer games. And, since it's what we've got in Arizona for craps and roulette, why not?

Yes or No to the Seven System At electronic craps, I'll likely bet the Pass Line, take full odds, and then make three Place bets. Each time they hit, I'll press them a dollar or two and let them grow until a seven-out. Pass Line betters hate seeing a seven after establishing a point because then all their Place bets lose, as well as their Pass Line bets.

Other players cover all the numbers except 7 by betting the Field (2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12) and placing the 5, 6, and 8 since they aren't in the Field. Unlike Place bets, Field bet wins or lose every roll. They hit 16 times in 36 rolls, with 2 (snake eyes) paying double and 12 (box-cars) paying triple.

At live craps, you can make a $5 Field bet and Place number 5 for $5 and 6 and 8 for $6 each. Your total initial investment is $22. If the shooter sevens-out, you lose the entire $22, but any other number wins! If 5, 6, or 8 rolls, you lose your $5 in the field but win $7 on the Place bet, and you're up $2. If a Field number rolls, you win at least $5 ($10 on 2 and $15 on 12), and your Place bets are safe for the next roll.

At electronic craps, you can try this with just $1 in the Field and three $1 Place bets. Where you go from there is up to you! $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years.

YOU CAN STOP BEING A “LOSER” Just Make The Commitment To Do This One Simple Thing ...

A

re you playing Blackjack in such a way that leaves everyone else at the table in an all-horns-and-rattles mood? Believe it or not, there is a way to play Blackjack to make it a 100% negative expectation game … just hit on every hand until you bust!

One of the quickest ways to lose all your money at the casino is to play Blackjack without any strategy, or worse yet follow the dealer’s rules and hit 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. Can't lose fast enough? Then play hunches or at a continuous shuffle machine table and play more than one hand.

Last week I saw a player who would not hit 12 or over, then couldn't understand why he was the only one at the table not winning. For the benefit of that player, and all of you that play that way, below is a bust probability chart for all of the dealer up cards. As you can see, when the dealer shows a 7 through Ace, they only bust approximately 1 out of every 4 times. That means if you always stand on 12 and over you will lose 3 out of every 4 hands when the dealer shows 7 through Ace. 6 Decks: Dealer Hits Soft 17 Dealer Up Card Dealer Bust % 2 35.30% 3 37.56% 4 40.28% 5 42.89% 6 42.08% 7 25.99% 8 23.86% 9 23.34% J, Q, K 21.43% A 11.65%

Besides making all of the other players see red from all the jumping in and out, the only time he didn’t lose was when he wasn't playing!

Blackjack is a game of probabilities. The best way to play a hand is derived from mathematics based on long run probabilities.

That's how they came up with Basic Strategy. So if you are not playing Blackjack perfectly, you’re most likely a “loser.” And, the more misplayed hands, the more likely you are losing a lot of money in the long run.

Here is a fun fact … You can ask the pit personnel for a Basic Strategy card and play the game perfectly, even if you have never played before. Blackjack has the best odds in the casino for the player if Basic Strategy is utilized. The casino will have approximately a .56% advantage for a six deck game.

However, you must not deviate from Basic Strategy. Just be patient, and over time, you will start to see that you have way more winning sessions than you do losing ones! How much simpler could it possibly be? You can even take the Basic Strategy chart to the casino with you so you don't have to memorize it.

So if you want to stop being a “loser” at the game of Blackjack, you can fix your game, believe it or not. Just make the one simple commitment to start playing using Basic Strategy.

It never ceases to amaze me the foolish plans some players come up with that they think will win them lots of money. One player thought that by sitting out he could tell when a good time to jump in would be to get him a winning hand!

TRIPLE DOUBLE BONUS POKER The Rollercoaster Ride Of Your Life!

I

have a love-hate relationship with the Video Poker game Triple Double Bonus Poker. It’s kind of like over-indulging in a scrumptious European style chocolate butter cream cake or going on that rollercoaster ride with your kids a second time (even though your stomach is still in your throat from the first time around).

Triple Double Bonus Poker is a brutal, but extremely rewarding Video Poker game. With a bet of five credits, a winning combination of four Aces with a kicker (any single 2, 3, or 4) pays 4,000 credits. This is equivalent to $1,000 playing a quarter denomination machine, the exact same win as the Royal Flush.

You can expect this substantial win to happen quite frequently; on average about once in every 14,000 hands!

And, not only do the Aces pay much more than usual, but the four 2s, 3s, or 4s with a kicker also pay a much higher bonused win of 2,000 credits than other standard Video Poker games.

You won’t need to wait that long for this win either, because

one of these sweet four-of-a-kind combinations will appear about once in every 5,800 games, on average. At this point I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Where’s the catch?” Well, there is a catch and boy it’s not pretty. To be able to pay higher rewards for winning combinations that happen less often, the pays for the winning combinations that happen very often are significantly reduced. In this game, you are not rewarded twice your bet back with a two-pair as you are with Video Poker games like Bonus Poker and Jacks or Better, but rather just your bet back. Furthermore, the three-of-a-kind wins are reduced to twice your bet back rather than three times your bet like on most other Video Poker games. $ HINT: Just like with Double Bonus Poker and Double Double Bonus Poker, you always want to sacrifice a full house that has three Aces for the chance of getting quad Aces. Hold the three Aces and discard the pair if the pair is a 5 through King. If the pair is a kicker (a 2, 3, or 4), then hold a kicker along with the three Aces. You also want to perform this strategy if the cards are three low cards. Don’t hold a kicker when dealt only a pair of Aces or a pair of low cards!

Casino Del Sol’s extensive safety protocols have been in place since the properties first reopened in June. All Casino Del Sol guests and employees are required to wear masks, practice social distancing while moving about the property and have their temperature taken with thermal scan software upon entry. Additionally, smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas. machines and chairs throughout the day, the tables and surfaces in the Bingo Hall are sanitized at the end of each session and the card shoe, toke boxes, paddles and discard rack are sanitized each time a dealer enters a table game.

Most of the slot machines have been spaced apart and plexiglass has been installed between other slot machines to ensure a safe playing environment.
