Which Gifts Are Good Or Bad Luck?

T

VOLUME 09 • ISSUE 12 MANAGING DIRECTOR Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com

he gift giving season is upon us and I wanted to remind our readers that for many superstitious people (and gamblers) certain gifts are considered good or bad luck!

If you are giving a wallet or a purse, include money in it. This guarantees the wallet or purse will never be empty. When giving cash, give in odd amounts such as $21, $51, or $101, etc. Don’t give clocks or watches as gifts as they symbolize time running out for the person receiving the gift. Gifts of knives and scissors are to be avoided as, symbolically, the bond of friendship or family will be broken. Thanks to our readers for always providing us with feedback about our magazine. We appreciate you and are grateful for your loyalty. Please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know what you think and keep all of your questions rolling in. We get a lot of them, both handwritten and emailed, so it may take a while to get back to all of you, but we do love reading them, and responding. And, while we select some for publication by committee, we are working on being able to share all of them with all of you! Stay tuned! Please visit our Facebook at: Facebook.com/ArizonaGamingGuide, become part of our community and share your thoughts and experiences with others who also love the same casino games you do. You can sign up for our e-newsletter and find current and back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. Let me know what you think of this issue and have fun! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK

Q: Your Players Talk is my favorite part of your magazine that I pick up at Cocopah Casino. In the Table Games [section] in your October [2017] issue, it stated [regarding slot machines] "the higher the denomination, the better the odds for the player." Does the same hold true on a [slot] machine where you can choose the denomination you wish to play? Thank you. Nadine L.—Yuma, AZ A: Thank you Nadine for your feedback! What a great question as the answer is not as straightforward as “Yes” or “No.” Having designed slot machines for a variety of manufacturers from the ground up, we know slot machines are leased, rented, or sold to casinos with a variety of configurable options. One of those options is the payback percentage. Casinos will set the payback percentage, what was referred to as “odds” in the October 2017 Table Games article by Al Moe, once a game arrives on their floor. In the event a casino decides to install a slot machine with multiple denominations, say penny and two cent, the option exists for a different payback percentage to be enabled for each denomination. Of course, just because the option exists doesn't mean a casino will choose to use the option. Think about this, when you or I purchase a new car, just because one of the features that comes with the vehicle is four wheel drive doesn't mean we’ll ever use four wheel drive. Since we can’t expect a casino to answer these questions about payback percentages for patrons, we’ll have to do a little investigating on our own to determine if the higher denomination on the multi-denomination slot is using a higher payback percentage (better odds). Publicly available data at the Nevada Gaming Control Board confirms the following fact: The higher the denomination on a slot machine, the higher the payback percentage, or the better the odds, or the lower the house hold percentage. Of course, this is all accounting for the proverbial “long run” timeframe. In the short term, because all slot machines use random number generators, and as each spin is independent of the next, players may not experience the “better odds” from one spin to the next, or even across the next 100 spins. But once you are already out in the 10,000 or 100,000 or even 1,000,000 spins you, as a player, are approaching the “long run” scenario.

Since most casino patrons are actually “long run” players over a lifetime, playing at a higher denomination will improve your “long run odds” on slot machines. However, be smart! Bring an acceptable bankroll based on your personal situation only for your entertainment to a casino. The first way to tell if a slot machine’s payback percentage is different between denominations, or between casinos for that matter (even at the same denomination!), is to memorize the reel strips. It’s not as hard as it sounds! If five reel strips is too much for you, just start with one reel strip. Find the “important” symbols on the reel strip like Wilds, Bonus, or other high value symbols. Then take careful note of the two symbols above and below each important symbol. Write it down if you have to. For example, the order might be King, Jack, Bonus, Happy Hyena, Queen just around one Bonus symbol. Then switch denominations (or casinos if you are interested in the same game elsewhere and want to compare which casino has the better odds for your game) and pay attention to the reel strip symbol order you just copied down. Are you still seeing King, Jack, Bonus, Happy Hyena, Queen? If so, this implies the same payback percentage. Or, did the order change? If so, this implies a different payback percentage which probably isn’t lower as the denomination went up! Of course you’ll need to apply this methodology to all the reel strips and all of the important symbols to be sure, but as soon as you can notice one difference somewhere on the reel strip, you know you are on to a change in the payback percentage! The second place of interest are the bonus games to find telltale clues about a change in payback percentages. In the case of free game bonuses, the change in payback percentage is also hiding in the reel strips. Just apply the same methodology we listed above. In the case of credit bonuses where you pick objects or spin a wheel, you’ll have to write down your bonus wins over at least 50 bonuses and calculate an average for each denomination. If one average is significantly higher (10% or more) than the other, I think you also have a clue as to which denomination had the better odds. Have Fun, and Good Luck! $

CLIFF CASTLE CASINO HOTEL Debuts Largest Non-Smoking Slots Area In Arizona & More!

C

liff Castle Casino Hotel, located in picturesque Camp Verde, Arizona, is in the process of completing a 122 room hotel tower, a 5,000 square foot conference and event center, and multiple resort amenities including an indoor pool, fitness center, gift shop, and more! While the conference and event center are essentially finished and will be put to use as early as New Year’s Eve, and the hotel is scheduled to be open for guests as early as the first quarter of 2018, a very important addition to the slot floor is ready for play immediately—Cliff Castle Casino Hotel’s non-smoking slot area! At over 100 machines strong, this is the largest non-smoking slot area in Arizona. To play your favorite slots in the comfort of a non-smoking environment, simply walk in the main entrance of the casino and head to your left. Easily identified with a prominently lighted sign, the non-smoking slot section connects the main casino floor to the new hotel lobby. Plus, Video Poker players who prefer a non-smoking environment will find plenty of IGT Game Kings to play among the 108 units there! James Perry, Director of Marketing at Cliff Castle Hotel, said, “We are accomplishing two important goals with this new addition to our casino. We are responding to our guests’ input to have a non-smoking slot section, and we also want to provide a pleasant smoke-free environment throughout the hotel. This new non-smoking section enables us to work together with our Facilities Department in order to accommodate our guests at the casino and at the hotel. We are very excited to have the largest non-smoking slot section in Arizona and the response from our guests is positive!” The new non-smoking experience on the slot floor is not the only change Cliff Castle Casino Hotel has instituted. Recently, several banks of penny video slots, 22 machines total, had their payback percentages increased by the casino’s new Director of Slots, Ron Ingoglia who added, “I am excited, in my position here, to be able to make some of our penny games looser for our guests! My team and I made sure to make them easily visible to all our patrons. Just look for the toppers identifying the machines as you walk across the casino floor.” So, a new, expansive non-smoking section, looser games, a 46 slot & Video Poker High Limit Room, all your favorite slots on the casino floor, Video Poker, Blackjack, restaurants, entertain-

TABLE GAME PSYCHOLOGY Profiling Gamblers—Which Type Are You?

C

asinos use a lot of psychology to get you in the door. Ads that show beautiful people having the time of their lives are just the beginning. Low food prices, room deals, and loyalty programs take it a little further. The subtle things in those ads, or not in the ads, are a lure too! The property always looks upscale, safe, and fun. There are no dishes to do, or children to watch or pick up after. It’s an adult playground. Yippee! Just bring your cash, but you knew that, right? It’s not underhanded, and it’s not subtle, but that’s the whole point at the casino. They can serve you an awesome meal, and they’ll let you gamble up a storm, but the outcome is up to you. To have fun or not, win or lose. That’s right; casinos offer fun and excitement, time away from the worries of the day. And, the table games offer comradery. Just keep in mind the house has the edge. That’s the rub. The casino is there to win. It’s enough to make you quit playing, but you won’t. I won’t either because I love the excitement. It’s the adrenaline rush that gets me. So, think about why you gamble before you go out to play. Then, take a few steps to ensure you have a good time. The Social Gambler Maybe you just want a little social interaction. Not only can you banter with the dealer, but the other players can be a joy at the blackjack table. Most of them. You have my permission to ignore the annoying ones. If you do gamble to be social, then enjoy your company or try another table. Don’t try to keep up with the other players, their prodigious drinking or their huge bets. Play your game at your own pace. Drink in moderation and bet what you can afford. The casino is a bad place to show off. Another psychological stumbling block is knowing when to quit. Don’t hang with the crowd to fit in. It’s time to quit when you get tired or aren’t playing well. There’s nothing wrong with quitting early, win or lose. Trust me. Playing for the Rush Many players crave the “high” they get from gambling, that rush when the rollercoaster zooms downward, and they really

24 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2017 | azgamingguide.com

don’t know if it will stay on the tracks. Hey, I empathize. I love the unknown, but I hate to lose, so I have a simple solution. I set a time limit. It’s a good way to limit lost evenings and lost fortunes. Get your kicks, but save enough for another chance to have fun next week. The best part of a time limit is you’ll savor every minute at the casino that much more. Escapism According to psychological studies, escapism is a major reason why people gamble. And, it’s a valid one, even if some players won’t admit it. Often, the money is of limited consequence. That’s a problem. Hobbies are great, and gambling can be a hobby, a way to escape the daily grind. Still, nobody ever solved their problems by taking out their frustrations on their bankroll. If you’re drifting off to gamble and escape, enjoy yourself, but keep a tight rein on your emotions, and your money! Let us know what you think about this article! Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com with “Al’s Table Games” as the subject. Good luck! $

THE BEST BLACKJACK IN PHOENIX My Opinions On The Best Games And Tournaments

P

layers often ask me, “Where's the best place to play Blackjack in the Phoenix area?” From my personal experience, the answer to the question lies where the best player odds can be found, and where I win the most! I used to recommend playing Blackjack at Fort McDowell Casino because of their previously favorable rules for the player that made the house edge the lowest in the Valley. I had many winning sessions at Fort McDowell Casino over the years which made the long drive out there worthwhile. If you like to take trips, Mazatzal Hotel & Casino in Payson has some great odds for the Blackjack player. You will usually find me in Payson on Monday nights around 6pm playing in their weekly Blackjack Tournament. I have a good win percentage there and always have a lot of fun. The three Gila River Casinos, Wild Horse Pass, Vee Quiva, and Lone Butte, for me haven't been easy to win at. Although over all I have a winning record, it seems to take a lot of effort for me to come out ahead so I don't play at those casinos very often. Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino Resort is a bit of a drive for me from Phoenix but I find it is worth it. Not only have I had a number of winning sessions, but the dealers are very friendly and the casino provides for a fun atmosphere. The casinos I play at and win the most at are Talking Stick Resort and Casino Arizona. I have an 85% win rate there. You will always find me at Casino Arizona on Tuesdays at noon, and the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm for their Blackjack Tournaments. The casinos add money to the prize pool for both tournaments making them both positive value events. For Example, here is how the math works out for the Tuesday Tournament at Casino Arizona: The tournament has an entry fee of $50, is limited to 72 players, and is almost always a sell out. With 72 players paying $50 each to enter, the prize pool is $3,600. The Casino then adds another $1,000 to the pool for a total of $4,600. The tournament pays through six places, so the average payout at the final table is $766. The odds of you getting in the money by luck alone at this tournament are 12 to 1. Simply put, you would get in the money on average once every twelve tournaments that you played. To enter twelve tournaments with an entry fee of $50 would cost you a total of $600.

That makes this a positive expectation event for the player because over the long run you will make, on average, $166 for every twelve tournaments played regardless of skill! The tournament has three qualifying rounds, a Semifinal and then a Championship Round. Each qualifying round has three tables of six players. Each player starts with $5,000 in play chips, and can bet between $25 and $2,500 per hand. At the end of 21 hands, only the player at each table with the most chips advances to the Semifinal. The Semifinal is made up of three tables of six players each. Fifteen of these individuals are the players that had the most chips at the end of 21 hands at their table in the qualifying rounds. The other three spots are filled by a wild card drawing from the pool of players who entered but failed to win their table. Even if you didn't advance by winning your table you still have a chance by having your name drawn as a wild card. In the Semifinal, each player again starts with $5,000 in play chips and can bet between $25 and $2,500 per hand. After 21 hands, the top two players with the most chips at each table advance to the Championship Round, or “Money Round” as I like to call it. In the Championship Round, each player again starts with $5,000 in play chips, and can bet between $25 and $2,500 per hand. The nice thing about this round is that you know you will be paid, it's just a matter of how much! At the end of 21 hands, the chips are counted and 1st through 6th place is awarded. This tournament is the kind that all Blackjack tournament players seek out because it's not a question of IF you will come out ahead, but WHEN! Let us know what you think about this article! Send us an e-mail to editor@azgamingguide.com with “TJ’s Table Games” as the subject. Good luck! $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS KING My Entertainment Dollars Are Going To Be Spent For Enjoyment!

M

y readers know me pretty well by now. I’m no nonsense, straight shooting, and blunt at times. Since our editorial team continues to receive letters and emails from our reader base about customer service issues, I’m going to let loose a little bit and tell it like it is. If a casino can’t get their act together enough to:  find staff with a customer service orientation,  train said team members with appropriate skills,  follow up with all of the team members and monitor how those customer service skills are being put into practice,  listen and act on the feedback the customers are providing, then don’t expect much from the guests either. I know the casino patron is not the easiest demographic to please as their money is wagered for entertainment purposes

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2017 | azgamingguide.com

and many patrons show up grouchy to begin with, further compounded when their bankroll is decimated by a particularly brutal play session! Here’s an example: when I call a casino’s main phone number to get information about hotel rooms, or to ask if they have some of my favorite slot machines, I shouldn’t be greeted by someone whose voice tells me they don’t care, or is so unintelligible I’m not sure if I dialed the right number. To a prospective patron, the message is loud and clear, “don’t bring your entertainment dollars here!” $
