I am a civil engineering student, majoring in structural engineering. My passion for engineering was formed while I was a very young boy. While in the second grade of high school, I got a chance to participate in a research project at the research center for eco-environmental sciences, Chinese academy of sciences. I was able to recognize and sharpen my research skills, which I find very fundamental in my career aspiration.

Surname 2 The desire to excel and pass college entrance examination, combined with the strictness of my parents inculcated in me virtues necessary for success such as hard work, obedience, being focused, passionate and being optimistic. My parents were very supportive. I earned myself an admission into Beijing University to pursue mechanical engineering. However, I never joined the university as I chose to study in the U.S. due to the high quality of education in the US. In the US, I was admitted to study mechanical engineering. However, an event back at home made me change my ambition to civil engineering. That was in the year 2008 when about 240,000 people were killed in Sichuan earthquake. Many of the buildings were not designed, planned or built to offer enough life safety and property protection.

I was shocked by the weakness of the Chinese residential structure and so I later changed my major to civil engineering. I specialized in structure and architecture and currently I am interested in the structure failure detection sensor project/research. The desire to make a difference and alleviate suffering made me choose structural engineering as my major. On the other hand, I am very interested in structure of architecture. I like Gothic architecture especially churches, the extreme complicated structure drives me crazy.

I have always strived to excel in my profession so as to be a person who can be relied on.

I have been able to advance my computer skills such as in; MATLAB, LABVIEW, MATHEMATICA, UGNX 3D modeling design, GIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth, EPANET, CARLOS, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office suit. Between October 2011 and December 2011, I carried a research on watershed analysis in Coles Creek, northwest of Houghton. I was able to find the watershed parameters by topographic maps and watershed boundary on Google Earth; I classified the hydrologic soil types using the Houghton County soil data, and figured out the RCN numbers according to the soil types classified. I also set up a precipitation model in the arcGIS program and estimated the precipitation value from 1st July 2008 at 00:00 to 6th July 2008 at 00:00.

My current research project is on structure failure detection sensor whereby I intend to apply a single arbitrary wave form through the concrete structure, in order to predict and analyze any potential change of structural integrity. The project is on-going until the end of summer semester of 2012.
