July DCM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 Thank You . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 2

Lieutenant Governor MARIAH HERNANDEZ Hoot, hoot! Mama Owl here! This summer has absolutely flown by, Owls! I hope that you got your rest and racked up some service hours with all of the free time you had! Even if you were swamped with summer school or other work, I still hope you made the most of your break and managed to take time to serve the community in one way or another. Also, I hope you all had an incredible time at SuperherOTC and learned a thing or two about how to enhance your powers to serve as an officer and a member. The DLT and I have worked so hard over the past 2 months to ensure that this event would serve its purpose to educate you and give you the confidence you need to take on this term! That being said, I cannot wait to see how you utilize the new knowledge you gained from OTC. Though this summer is winding down to a close, we are not done yet! I am overjoyed that we will all be coming together for a second time this month to attend the July Tidey DCM at Santa Monica Beach! This combines 3 of my favorite things: the beach, service, and my Ohana! Also, since we are so close to beginning the school year and recruiting new members, I want to encourage you to reach out to new people and show them the joy of being in Key Club! Invite them to a club meeting or DCM to show them how we make the keys to open doors to reveal a better, more positive world! Showing someone that you personally want them to attend can be much more impactful than a flyer or any promotion. Overall, ensure that anyone who has the desire to join our mission of spreading love through the community feels more than welcome to our Ohana! With all the lovely, kind, and caring souls across our Division, I have no doubt that you will make our new owls feel right at home in Key Club! Until next time, Owls!

OWLways with Appreciation, Mariah Hernandez 2018-2019 D38W Lieutenant Governor

Club Updates Highland High School

For the the month of June, Highland Key Club has had a bunch of time to prepare for the upcoming year. They have been discussing future events and are very excited for it. The June DCM was a very fun event that the whole club was able to go to! One of their members, who had never been to a DCM before, said, “DCM was one of the funnest club events I have ever been to. The staff & officers were a blast to be around & the event was well planned. It gave me a better idea of what key club had to offer & how it doesn’t have to be serious all the time.“ This member was Din Le. With his response it was easy to tell that the Fortnite DCM was a success!

Quartz Hill High School

The month of June has proved to be a busy time for the Quartz Hill High Owls! To start planning for future events and new ideas, QH club officers met at Starbucks to share their thoughts on the upcoming term. Quartz Hill Owls are planning to host another officer meeting at Love BBQ to brainstorm new ideas for this 2018-2019 term! The meeting will be held on July 6th. Quartz Hill Key Club has many fun things planned for this term!

SuperherOTC Thank you to all the officers and members for attending SuperherOTC! We hope you had a great time and learned more about leadership and Key CLub! More to come in the next issue! 5

Recognitions Member of the Month Din Le

The member of the month is Din Le from Highland Key Club! Din's passion has been increasing the more he goes to Key Club events and everyone is excited to see where his passion will take him. He has been showing much dedication towards Key Club and the division, and the Highland Key Club Board has definitely noticed it. After his experience at the Fortnite DCM, he expressed his intention to stay involved throughout the entire term. Din Le is definitely deserving of this honor as he is a growing Key Clubber that is always interested in the next event!

Officer of the Month Madelyn Cruz

Paraclete Key Club’s Vice President of Service and Outreach Madelyn Cruz has gone above and beyond in her leadership and initiative this month. She has consistently been communicating with organizations in the community, such as St. Vincent de Paul, to organize service events for Paraclete Key Club. Thanks to Madelyn's initiative, Paraclete will be helping St. Vincent de Paul in fundraising for a clinic in Guatemala! With such a committed and spirited Vice President of Service and Outreach like Madelyn, there is no doubt that Paraclete will be opening up countless opportunities to serve this term!

Kiwanis Advisor of the Month Mr. Richard Olmstead

Mr. Olmstead has always been the biggest supporter of Division 38 West as region advisor. He serves as Kiwanis Advisor for many of the clubs in the division, including some he is not the assigned Kiwanis advisor for. Despite how busy Mr. Olmstead is between serving as International Trustee, Region Advisor, and Kiwanis Advisor, he always manages to put his full effort and passion into all of his duties. It is absolutely incredible and admirable how much passion and dedication Mr. Olmstead has puts into his service. We cannot begin to put into words how much Mr. Olmstead is appreciated or how his invaluable guidance helps the entire Division thrive. Nonetheless, we are proud to announce him as Kiwanis Advisor of the month!

Faculty Advisors of the Month Mrs. Gonzales & Mrs. Lyndon

Desert Sands Key Club’s advisors Mrs. Gonzales and Mrs. Lyndon are undoubtedly some of the most selfless and dedicated women that Key Club has seen, for they truly go the extra mile beyond what is expected of a faculty advisor. They spend a great amount of time to ensure that the work of the officers is complete, that their members stay consistent with service, and even help the members with school. They are prime examples of advisors who wholeheartedly care about their students and about showing them the beauty of serving the community.

Spotlight on SERVICE July Focus: Go Outdoors

Today’s youth has become accustomed to sitting indoors and looking at screens. Whether it be phones, laptops, or video games there are fewer kids going outside to enjoy the warm summer sun. This hasn’t helped at all in fighting the growing global obesity epidemic in our world. In the month of July, let’s encourage our Key Clubbers and our communities to live a healthier lifestyle, and what better way to do so by going outdoors and serving! If we serve together as one division, we can make a difference that’ll change the world!

Fundraising Ideas Car Wash for Cash

It’s summer! Now is the perfect time to have a carwash with your club! Ask for donations, and plenty of people will be happy to give as long as you explain what charity you’re donating to. Find an open park, school, or parking lot where you can wash cars. Then gather all of the supplies such as sponges, car soap, rags, and water. A car wash is much more eco-friendly than going to a gas station or car wash! Remember to BEE Clean!

Sell Water to Stay Hydrated

With the heat getting more intense, consider coordinating with a running event in your community such as a Color Run or a 5k race to sell water bottles! Each water bottle can cost as low as $1.00 each, and members can encourage the runners to keep going and to stay hydrated! Each bottle can have a special message written on it to keep the racers’ spirits up, such as, “You can do it!” or “We BEE-lieve in you!”.

Service Project Ideas Nature Cleanup

A simple and local service project you can easily plan during summer is a cleanup! This event can happen anywhere there is nature such as parks, creeks, beaches, and more! Pick a date and time that works with the members of your club and head to the nearest nature location to pick up trash and recycle plastic bottles! You can encourage members to bring extra gloves and trash bags to make the event a success. One way to make this a fun activity is to invite other clubs—the more, the merrier! Just make sure you have chaperones at your event to ensure all your club members are safe. Also, feel free to organize a hike or nature walk right after the event for a fun and healthy experience!

Youth Recreation There are lots of fun activities to do during the summer! Get together with your fellow members and find a youth recreation program. Some examples are the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, or even a local park’s program. Help out with managing equipment, supervising, or becoming an assistant coach for a summer team! Get out there, do service, and have fun in the sun!

Division News Editor Closing Message Happy July Owls! Can you believe the school year is almost here? These two months have completely flown by and I can hardly fathom that we are more than half a month away from beginning another chapter of our school lives. I am ecstatic to see the service our Division will accomplish in this new term and cannot wait to publish all the great deeds key clubbers will do this year! One of my favorite events of the year, Fall Rally, is also coming up! I cannot wait to don my purple and blue and demonstrate my excessive love for Key Club and our Division with you. I am excited to take on Fall Rally with both our Division and our awesome DLT and take home, yet again, the spirit stick! August, and this term, is sure to be the most memorable Key Club experience of my time here! Until next time, Owls!
