Lieutenant Governor MARIAH HERNANDEZ Hoot, hoot! Mama Owl here!

School is back in session and so begins our regularly scheduled Key Club meetings! I hope you are all doing well with adjusting to your classes, which I know we all have been dreading. Fear not, though! We had such an incredible summer of service and I can guarantee you that we will continue to go strong well into the school year! The DLT and I have a general plan of how the months leading up to Fall Rally will look like, so stay tuned for some amazing events we have coming up! Also, member recruitment season has begun! Rally up all your friends to go to Key Club meetings and make sure that you are promoting Key Club to the best of your abilities to make our Ohana grow! You may not realize it now, but inviting someone to join Key Club can really impact their lives, open their eyes to the value of service, make them feel more happy at school, and obtain a new Ohana. Therefore, please do your best to show people how amazing it is to be a part of Key Club! On another note, though we have been working hard over the summer to reach our goal of $2000 for PTP by Fall Rally, please make sure that you are continuing to help us achieve those goals! From the Fortnite DCM and Chipotle fundraiser, we have raised approximately $303.41! Start fundraisers within your home clubs that will benefit PTP, which can be as simple as setting up jars of change in classrooms, doing a "Pie for PTP" fundraiser to pie officers in the face, setting up a fundraiser through a local food business, bake sales, and so much more! The possibilities are endless, so get creative! Also, I ask that you do your best to promote these fundraisers, especially those within the division, so that we can ensure a great turnout! It's been an incredible summer with the Fortnite DCM, SuperherOTC, and the Tidey Beach Cleanup, and I cannot wait to see where the Fall takes us! I hope to see you all at the August DCM on the 31st, the first division event of the school year! Until next time, Owls!

OWLways with Appreciation, Mariah Hernandez 2018-2019 D38W Lieutenant Governor

Club Updates Highland High School For the month of July, Highland Key Club was able to accomplish many things! The officers were able to have a board meeting at Panera to prepare for the upcoming school year and prepare for Highland's club rush. They discussed future events and established goals for the new term. Many Highland Owls were also able to attend OTC, and it was very inspiring and informative! Both officers and members learned about their roles in both Key Club and their community at this educational event! During OTC, Key Club sewed PTP dolls that would be donated to the Antelope Valley Hospital.

Quartz Hill High School

The month of July was exciting for many D38W members as the first Tidey Beach Clean-Up DCM was held on July 28th. The Owls picked up trash at Santa Monica. They also participated in bonding activities such as Line Tag, Hula Hoop Relay, and Sand Castle Building. Afterwards, the Owls were allowed to explore the surrounding beach. This DCM provided members the opportunity to help their community as well as bond with their fellow Owls!

Paraclete High School On Wednesday, August 1st, Paraclete's Key Club gathered to make sandwiches for St. Vincent de Paul. Over 40 sandwiches were made with the help of both officers and members. The sandwiches were distributed to local families in need. Meal distribution is just one of the many ways our local chapter of St. Vincent de Paul assists with the needs of those less fortunate in our community. It is quite humbling to see how one meal can impact someone's life.

Tidey July DCM Thank you to all the members who attended the Tidey July DCM! We hope you had a great time and were able to develop a stronger bond with your Ohana! The environment is now a cleaner place because of you!

SuperherOTC Thank you to all the officers and members who attended SuperherOTC! We hope you had a great time learning about your Kiwanis family, managing your club, and service!

Another thank you to all the Owls who helped sew PTP dolls! The children at the Antelope Valley Hospital appreciate your hard work and selflessness.

Recognitions Member of the Month Joshua Haering

Joshua Haering of Paraclete Key Club is the August Member of the Month! Despite not holding an officer position, he took time out of his busy summer to help the Paraclete Key Club Officers make sandwiches for the homeless through St. Vincent de Paul. Josh has continuously been a dedicated and involved member since freshman year, and Key Club is very fortunate to have him!

Officer of the Month Annette Reyes

The August Officer of the Month is Annette Reyes, Highland Key Club's Historian. She is an exceptional board member whose creativity and positive attitude has allowed not just the board, but general members as well, to gain an even more positive outlook on Key Club itself. Annette always keeps everyone on their feet, and never fails to motivate all to think positively. She is also the first historian in Highland High School's Key Club history to start creating vlog type videos and a YouTube channel for Highland Key Club! Annette deserves to be the Officer of the Month due to her bright and creative character!

Kiwanis Advisor of the Month Mr. Richard Olmstead

This month SOAR would like to award Mr. Olmstead as Kiwanis Advisor of the Month! SOAR adores Mr. Olmstead and appreciates everything he does for Key Club. Mr. Olmstead has been the club's number one supporter since day one and they couldn't have accomplished what they have done without him. Whenever they contact him asking to visit their clubs’ ceremonies or have any questions regarding Key Club, he is always there. SOAR High School is small but they would like to thank Mr. Olmstead for always making everyone feel welcomed.

Faculty Advisors of the Month Mrs. Speaks

Mrs. Speaks from SOAR High School is the Advisor of the Month. She was really on top of things this month when it came to getting the officers ready for the school year and having meetings before school started. Mrs. Speaks gave the rest of the officers a pep talk asking them to step up when President Kylie was away on college tours in Colorado and New York. Her doing this really helped President Kylie not have to worry so much for the week she was gone. Though Mrs. Speaks retired this past school year she continues to be SOAR's advisor. If that doesn’t scream dedication we don’t know what does.

Spotlight on SERVICE August Focus: Children's Education Since 1946, Key Club International has encouraged members to focus on the Major Emphasis - “Children: Their Future, Our Focus.” Key Club is determined to provide children with the education they need to ensure that kids all around the world have a great future awaiting them. During the month of August, we should remember to focus on increasing all children's access to education and improving its quality . By working together as a division, there is no limit to what we can accomplish!

Fundraising Ideas Trivia Challenge

Recommended Club Size: Medium-Large Invite the whole Kiwanis Family to participate in a Trivia Challenge fundraiser! First find a meeting space for Key Clubbers, Builder’s Club members, Kiwanians, and other members of the Kiwanis Family to gather for the event. Then, pick out Key Club or community service related trivia questions such as questions about Key Club history, the goals of major charity organizations, Kiwanis Family, or non-Key Club Topics. Organize it as Kahoot games or play it traditionally with slips of paper with the questions written on them. Randomly assign teams, keep score, and give a prize to the winning team! Ask for a $1 donation for admission and donate the money towards one of Key Club’s preferred charities!

Bingo Night

Recommended Club Size: Medium-Large While this event is called a “BINGO Night” it could also feature board games that help develop children’s critical thinking skills. There could be stations where parents and kids in the community can come to participate in different games that are education-themed, such as Scrabble. This will take a lot of advertising, but could work if the Kiwanians help advertise it to the community for participation. In addition to admission, clubs can also earn money by selling food, drinks, or having a raffle.

Service Project Ideas Library Visit

Recommended Club Size: Small-Medium

Key Clubbers can go to their local library and volunteer there by doing an assortment of things including cleaning up and reading to kids. Club representatives should contact their library to ask about setting up an event at the library such as having Key Clubbers read books to the children. If there were two to three Key Clubbers for each group of 10 kids spread throughout the library, clubs of different sizes can carry out this project by adjusting the number of Key Clubbers working with the groups as the number of kids increases. This could be a weekly event where Key Clubbers come and read to the kids in the community.

School Supply Drive

Recommended Club Size: Medium-Large, or Joint Club Event With summer break coming to a close, you can organize a school supply drive to donate unused school supplies or backpacks you may have at home to the youth in your community! First, find a location – preferably somewhere convenient for members to drop off their unused school supplies, such as your local library or high school – and contact the place 2-3 weeks in advance to ask if you may hold the drive there. Once you have the date, time, and location settled, start promoting your event using posters and social media! On the day of the drive, have several club members, officers, and advisors help set up any necessary equipment such as tables, posters, signs, boxes, etc. 1-2 hours prior to the event start time. Throughout the duration of the drive, be kind and welcoming to those who pass by, regardless of whether or not they are donating. Also, if you would like to extend the drive you may leave donation boxes at the site. Once the drive is over, collect all the boxes and donate them to your local School on Wheels site or any other organizations that accept donations. Ideas by the CNH Service Projects Committee

Division News Editor Closing Message Hey Owls! I hope you have settled back into your daily school routines and that you are ready to tackle the new school year! May we soar to new heights as we serve our community and beyond! I’m so proud of what we accomplished this summer! The July DCM was our first ever beach clean-up and so many wonderful owls attended and helped make our environment a cleaner, happier place. SuperherOTC was another huge success as many of our Ohana learned more about Key Club and gave children at AV Hospital a reason to smile by making PTP dolls! Thank you to all who attended for always being ready to lend a helping hand! I can’t wait to see you all at the August DCM!!! Until next time, Owls!
