Lieutenant Governor MARIAH HERNANDEZ Hoot, hoot! Mama Owl here! Happy September Owls! The Fall season is upon us and we are about to have a few hectic, spirited, and service filled months as we lead up to Fall Rally in November! First, we have the September DCM: Serve-ICE Bond-FIRE to kick off the season! This will be a great opportunity to gain service hours, learn the chants for Fall Rally, and bond together with your Ohana over delicious s'mores! Come October, one of my favorite events is happening: the Regional Training Conference! Whether you are a new Key Clubber or you have been a member for a few years, we have a wide variety of presentations for you to learn more about our beloved service organization and how to make the most of this term as a member! Also, this is the ONLY region event for this year, so you do not want to miss the chance to meet other Key Clubbers from our counterpart division, 38E, as well as the other R5 Lieutenant Governors from Las Vegas and the District Pie Committee Chair Rita Nguyen! We all would love to see you there and make a Key Clubber out of you! As someone who had their Key Club moment at RTC, I can tell you that this event is 100% worth it! After that, we have some more exciting things coming up, such as your favorite 12-hour event (*hint*), more spirit sessions, service projects, and fundraisers! Please make sure that you are staying updated on everything Division 38 West! One last thing: PAY YOUR DUES! The club you serve will begin collecting dues for you to become an official member of Key Club! Dues are extremely important for us to be able to give out awards, fund conferences, allow the division to have a budget, and so much more! (Dues also allow you to attend events such as Fall Rally and DCON!)Â It's going to be a few wild months, but I cannot wait to experience it all with you all! I'll see you all very soon! Until next time, Owls!

OWLways with Appreciation, Mariah Hernandez 2018-2019 D38W Lieutenant Governor

Club Updates Highland High School

For the month of August, Highland Key Club was able to attend the August DCM, have their first meeting, and attend club rush! HHS members had a great time at the DCM and here’s what one of them said “August’s DCM was really fun, it was my first time at a Key Club function. I enjoyed the sock making even though they didn’t turn out the way I planned and my art skills were pretty bad. Watching the movie was fun and the snacks were good too.” For the very first meeting of the school year, HHS had a really good turnout! There were a bunch of new faces and they were able to introduce the board. HHS also had club rush at their school and were able to recruit some new members!

Quartz Hill High School The month of August proved to be a very exciting and busy month for the Quartz Hill High Owls! With the new school year beginning, the Owls hosted their first meeting and discussed their upcoming plans. Members will be bringing school supplies: pens, colored pencils, and other stationery to donate to an after school program. In addition, on Friday September 7th, the Owls are having a fundraiser at Menchies to raise money for PTP!

SOAR High School

SOAR Key Club participated in the annual Kiwanis Duck Race located at Drytown Water Park. At the Duck Race, people purchase ducks to race in Dry Town's Lazy River. Every duck entered has a chance to win $1 million dollars! SOAR's Key Club loves this event because it offers great community service and it's a load of fun. Many key clubbers helped out at the Duck Race, like officers Abby, SOAR's parliamentarian, and Isaac, SOAR's Tech Editor.

Recognitions Member of the Month Adrian Saleh

This month, we would like to award Adrian Saleh from SOAR Key Club as member of the month! Adrian has a very bright future in Key Club. He is only a 10th grader and has been the most active amongst SOAR key clubbers not only last year, but this year as well. He attends every event and meeting. For that, we invited him to attend the Kiwanis breakfast this Thursday with our officer of the month. He is very quiet, but once you talk to him, he is very great at listening. He is very well organized, knows how to ask questions, and is intelligent. He is very engaging which is one of his many great characteristics. We can’t wait to see what more Adrian brings to the table.

Officer of the Month Ashley Martinez

Ashley Martinez, TPAA Key Club’s treasurer, is one of the most hardworking officers and deserves to be recognized as officer of the month. She has a genuine interest in helping the community and improving the environment on both a physical and a mental level. She is always the first to research new projects, as well as where we can send deliverables. She has a passion for helping the community that has never been seen before and is inspiring to all who know her.

Spotlight on SERVICE September Focus: Pediatric Trauma Program

The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) is one of Key Club's largest preferred charities. PTP was established by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation in 1994 in response to the serious need for education and training in pediatric trauma and injury prevention. Funds go towards training doctors, nurses, and first responders, the purchase of specialized pediatric medical equipment, and the development of community outreach. Through PTP, countless unintentional, traumatic injuries have been avoided. Let’s try our best as a division to raise funds and serve for PTP!

Division News Editor Closing Message Hello my fellow Owls! I hope you’ve all been having an amazing month! I am so excited to see all of you at the September DCM on the 29th at LTG Mariah’s house. Let’s make some key club memories and, hopefully, a difference in our community as we finish the PTP dolls, make get well cards, and make friendship bracelets for children at the AV Hospital! Thank you all for being ready to lend a helping hand, whether it be for your local schools or the entire Antelope Valley. On another note, Fall Rally (my favorite Key Club event) and RTC are coming up! Get ready to don your purple and blue! Let’s get that Spirit Stick again and create a stronger bond with our Ohana! I’ll see you all very soon! Until next time, Owls!

Soaring for Service, Mackenzie Fernandez 2018-2019 D38W News Editor
