Lieutenant Governor MARIAH HERNANDEZ Hoot, hoot! Mama Owl here! HELLO DIVISION 38 WEST OWLS! If you have not yet met me, my name is Mariah Hernandez and I am proud to be serving as your 2018-2019 Lieutenant Governor! I cannot wait to get to know you all and work together to improve our community throughout this entire term! You all have made me feel so welcome to this position and have been extremely supportive by coming to the May DCM/End-of-the-Year Celebration and the June Fortnite DCM. Between the immense amount of books that you donated and the $135 for PTP we were able to raise, it is crystal clear that this year is off to a great start! I truly could not be happier and prouder to be serving alongside such dedicated and caring members. As we transition into the summer months, I encourage you to rest, take time to hang out with your family and friends, sleep as much as you can, and, of course, rack up those service hours! With all the free time you have, I would encourage you all to dedicate that time to helping others. Reach out to your clubs to see what service projects you can participate in together, grab some friends and go to Grace resources, and go to the July DCM/ Tidey Beach Clean-Up! Nothing like this DCM has ever been done and I am beyond excited to beautify Santa Monica beach and bond with you all! Also, please attend SuperherOTC, especially if you are an officer! This is a great opportunity to learn more about leadership in Key Club and clear up any confusion about your responsibilities as an officer. I can promise you will have a MARVELous time! Don’t miss out on all the fun this summer, stay active in Key Club and your community! I can’t wait to see you all very soon, beloved owls!

OWLways with Appreciation, Mariah Hernandez 2018-2019 D38W Lieutenant Governor

Club Updates Highland High School To close the school year, Highland held an event called Owl Night Out! Owl Night Out had a great turnout. The Key Club officers were able to give awards and superlatives to key clubbers. In the end it was a great way to end the year and say goodbye to their seniors!

Quartz Hill High School As a way to celebrate Quartz Hill Key Club’s great 2017-2018 term, they held an end-of-the-year banquet. It was on Thursday, May 24th. Members brought food such as chips, cookies, and cupcakes. The new officers handed out superlatives and member recognition awards. QH Key Club also had a Mini Pie-TP to raise money!

Recognitions Member of the Month Kalaya Culver

For the month of June, the member of the month is Kalaya Culver from Quartz Hill Key Club. She is committed to Key Club and has been a dedicated member since she joined. She has been to every single meeting and has been involved in the many activities that the club participated in. There was recently a club banquet where she received an award for having the most service hours in serving our community. Quartz Hill Key Club is looking forward to what she is going to bring to Key Club in the future and to seeing her more during the summer and next school year.

Officer of the Month Alexandria Martinez

This month it is a pleasure to recognize Alexandria Martinez as officer of the month. She is an incredible vice president and SOAR wouldn’t ask for anyone else. The past two service events, President Kylie has been unable to attend, so Alexandria stepped up and took over for her. She led the team and the rest of SOAR’s members to successful events. She is hardworking and determined and one of the most helpful people. Key Club can’t wait to continue working with her this term.

Kiwanis Advisor of the Month Mr. Richard Olmstead

It is an honor to recognize Mr. Olmstead as Kiwanis Advisor of the Month! Mr. Olmstead is loved and appreciated for everything he does for Key Club. Mr. Olmstead has been SOAR Key Club's number one supporter since day one and they couldn't have accomplished what they have without him. His dedication to the club is admired and he is an inspiration to all to do great things. SOAR cannot begin to explain how much Mr. Olmstead is appreciated. Whenever they contact him asking to visit their club’s ceremony or have any questions regarding Key Club, he is always there.

Faculty Advisor of the Month Mrs. Joanie Haynes

Littlerock’s Mrs. Haynes is an amazing person who is fit to be the Advisor of the Month for May! She is an amazing help to the officers and members of the club when it comes to fundraisers and any sort of confusion within the club. She is always available at school which makes it convenient for members and officers to meet her at any time. Mrs. Haynes is always cheerful and positive and super supportive! Littlerock is honored to have Mrs. Haynes as the Advisor of the Month!

Spotlight on SERVICE June Focus: Health and Safety

With summer on its way, ensuring the health and safety of our communities is as vital as ever! Whether it be cleaning up a park where children play, or hosting a fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP), there’s a million and more ways to get involved this June. The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) is one of Key Club's largest preferred charities. PTP was established by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation in 1994 in response to the serious need for education and training in pediatric trauma and injury prevention. Funds go towards training doctors, nurses, and first responders, the purchase of specialized pediatric medical equipment, and the development of community outreach. Through PTP, countless unintentional, traumatic injuries have been avoided. This summer, let’s try our best as a division to raise funds and serve for PTP!

Fundraising Ideas Pies for PTP Need a fun and easy way to get members involved and raise money at the same time? Think about having a “Pies for PTP” fundraiser! For just $3-$4 per plate, members will get the chance to throw a pie at officers while also raising funds for the Pediatric Trauma Program. It’ll be a win-win situation!

Lemonade Stand

Having your own lemonade stand may be old, but it’s still a golden way to raise funds this summer! Try reaching out to schools or a local college that offers summer courses to see if your club could sell ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Just make sure to coordinate how you’ll be making all of the lemonade, to set reasonable prices, and to publicize the event well. It’ll be a sweet way to contribute to the Pediatric Trauma Program!

Service Project Ideas Clean Ups

From beaches to parks, it’s important that we keep our public areas clean so that we can stay safe this summer. Schedule a clean up by first finding the right location, grabbing all of the proper supplies such as disposable gloves and trash bags, then publicizing to the members you serve! Even consider planning a social event right after, to encourage more members to attend your service event!

Volunteer, Volunteer, Volunteer!!!

Submitted by Ryu Miguel Malit [ Highland High School ]

There’s a plethora of ways for you and your club to get involved this summer. Volunteering with local food banks, shelters, and clinics in order to promote positive health for the community are great ways to start. Even volunteering with the local YMCA or park to help put on their summer programs is great. If there aren’t many places to volunteer in your area, maybe try setting up your own food bank through donations from your community.
