Letters from your EA’s! Upcoming Conclave!

Volume 7|Issue 8 D38W Official Newsletter |December 2016

Hello Owls! I hope you all had a smooth week of finals and I wish you all have a wonderful winter break! I currently am in Korea spending time with my family, and although I am having so much fun, I have to say, a part of me really wishes to be back in Palmdale, serving alongside the wonderful Key Clubbers in Division 38 West. This is a time filled with love, family, and giving, so, please don't forget to give back by serving our homes, schools, and communities. Cherish every memory you make this winter and make every second count. I really do hope you all have a memorable break filled with warmth and happiness. Thank you for all that you have done in this past term, coming up to DCMs, going to service events and fundraising, and showing immense devotion and love for this organization. I am grateful for every single moment I've had serving as your Lieutenant Governor. You all continue to inspire me and push me to do the best that I can do. Thank you for being such an amazing division to serve. Please keep in mind that Conclave is just around the corner. At this event, the delegates will be electing the new LTG for the upcoming term. Even if you are not a delegate, it is still recommend that you attend because it truly is an amazing event. I hope to see you all there! Serving to Make a Change, JiMin Margarett Lee

Executive Assistants Executive Assistant Aubrey Gilman Hello holly jolly Owls! Who else is excited for the holiday season? Now that we have finally conquered finals, it is time for a much needed break! Make sure to catch up on sleep, socializing, and your Netflix TV shows. Though we have a break from school, we do not have a break from service. Even the smallest thing you do can make a difference, so remember to give back. Make Christmas cookies for that person who sits alone, buy toys for unprivileged children, write Christmas cards to hospital patients, or go caroling at a home for the elderly. This season is a time for giving so don't forget to spread love and Christmas cheer to everyone you know! Be sure to take part in acts of service wherever you decide to spend your holidays. Also, keep in mind that Conclave is just around the corner where we will be electing the next Lieutenant Governor. With Conclave comes DCON, which will be one of the highlights of your Key Club experience. Make sure to keep up with the deadlines for fees and registration so you can have an amazing time with the rest of the DLT and me. Have a very merry holiday season and stay safe! That's all for now Owls! Happy Holidays! Aubrey Gilman

Executive Assistant Triveni Patel Hello Owls! I cannot believe that half of the term has already passed! I am so proud of our division and cannot wait to see what we accomplish during the rest of this term. I am beyond grateful to be serving as one of your Executive Assistants this term. Division 38 West, I am so honored to have been given this opportunity to serve my home, school, and community. I have been so lucky to meet so many of you and create friendships that will last a lifetime. I hope you all have an amazing holiday break and I hope to see you soon!

OWLways In Your Service, Triveni Patel

The final DCM of 2016 was held on December 3rd at the residence of our LTG. Following important updates about topics such as our upcoming Conclave and DCON fundraising, members enjoyed a delicious potluck in their pajamas! All who attended had a great time writing and sharing "love notes" with our ohana and sharing laughs throughout the potluck!

On December 10th, Owls interested in learning more about what it takes to be Lieutenant Governor or a District Officer gathered at the Kiwanis Professional Center.

Attendees received valuable information about the position, duties, and responsibilities of being a CNH Lieutenant Governor, all while having fun!

“CTC was such an eye opening experience for me. I became close friends with a lot of members from other divisions. We all danced, ate Chipotle, and laughed together during breaks. The best thing about CTC was seeing the drive, passion, and dedication I have for Key Club grow even larger because I was inspired by all of the attendees. I recommend that everyone attend this conference at least once so their passion for the organization can grow as well.” —Aubrey Gilman

This month at Paraclete High School, three members attended the December DCM and had a blast bonding with the Owl ohana! Additionally, officers participated in the school’s Advent celebration by reading a story about service and the power of kindness.

SOAR Key Club was happy to help out at Grace Resource Center for Thanksgiving Bagging. They also participated in this year’s Kiwanis Walmart Christmas Shopping. It was a really fun experience for them because they got to shop to give to children in need. [Submitted by: Arrianna Tadiosa]

This past month, Quartz Hill was able to volunteer at Grace Resource for the Thanksgiving food bagging. It was a great experience to serve our community during the season of giving. Quartz Hill also attended the last meeting of the semester this past week. We also held our final fundraiser of the semester, which was a success! [Submitted by: Triveni Patel]

Member of the Month– Month– Madeline Reyes Our member of the month for December is Madeline Reyes! Madeline Reyes is a freshman at SOAR and she has really shown her passion for Key Club this month. It is an honor to have Madeline as a part of Key Club because she always has a positive attitude and has so much greatness to give. This month she was very active and participated in many events. Some of events she attended was the Walmart shopping for families in need, packing food at Vince's Pasta for families in need, participating in the service project called Beads of Color, volunteering at Lancaster parade and the Palmdale parade, which was dedicated to Sergeant Owens. At each one of these events not only did Madeline give back to the community, but she also opened many hearts. Madeline truly made many people smile and continues to do so.

Officer of the MonthMonth-Raven Santos The division would like to recognize Raven Santos as the Officer of this Month. Raven is currently serving as a Vice-President for Highland Key Club and he has shown constant dedication and love for Key Club. He continues to attend division hosted events and inspire the members around him. He is not afraid to reach out and ask for help and is always trying to better serve his members. Raven is overall an amazing officer and he deserves to be recognized for all the hard work he does.

Club of the Month– Month– Sherman Burroughs This month, the division would like to recognize Sherman Burroughs as the Club of the Month. In the past month, Sherman Burroughs worked with the local Salvation Army to run a food basket drive. For about two weeks, they collected canned food from students at Burroughs. From there, they contacted the Salvation Army for names of local families that would like to have the food baskets. On the day of the delivery, the officers used club funds to purchase fresh foods to supplement the canned foods that we collected. Since this was during thanksgiving, they purchased whole turkeys for the larger families and smaller hams for the single person homes. Overall, this club created 7 food baskets that went to 7 families within the community. This home club holds monthly board meetings in order to plan for upcoming events. They are in the process of "training" underclassmen that are interested in holding officer positions, and they do this by giving them the opportunity to organize and run service projects.

Faculty Advisor of the Month– Month–Mrs. Haynes, Littlerock High School Kiwanis Advisor of the Month– Month–Ms. Nancy Speaks

Happy Holidays Owls! I truly hope this month has been full of happiness, holiday cheer, and inspiring service opportunities for all of you. Personally, this is my favorite time of year to get involved with the community and help others in meaningful ways. The holidays for many of us are a time to be with family, enjoy some time off, receive gifts, or indulge in great food. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to have these experiences during this time of year. It is important that we do not take our blessings for granted, especially as members of a club that was founded upon serving others. I encourage each of you to find an opportunity to give back this holiday season in a way that is truly meaningful for you. Maybe that means writing “thankyou’s” to soldiers who couldn’t be home this holiday, or serving a meal at a place like Grace Resources. Whatever it may be, remember that giving is much better than receiving, for giving feeds the soul in a way that receiving never can. I wish everyone the happiest of holidays! See you in 2017! Service is my purpose, Jade Phoreman Division 38 West News Editor 2016-2017
