Hello Owls! Can you BEE-lieve that we are already halfway through our term? It just seems like yesterday when I was being installed into office at District Convention. It’s crazy how fast time flies! I hope everyone is doing well in their school year so far, and getting more into the Key Club Spirit, as it is almost time for Fall Rally. I cannot wait to see you all there celebrating all our contributions to the Pediatric Trauma Program! Videos with the spirit chants will be sent out very soon to ensure that you all know the chants to participate at the rally! I have to say, I am very proud of the RTC turnout. It was honestly such an amazing experience to see everything fall together and so many members having a great time. Thank you to everyone who attended. We have many more months to go until our term is over, and until then, let’s keep striving to serve our communities and our keep our spirits high! OWL talk to you soon!

Region Training Conference 2016 was a huge success for Division 38 West and 38 East! Held on October 8th at Serrano High School, this year’s RTC inspired members to find the courage to engage. Key Clubbers had the opportunity to attend educational workshops covering topics such as leadership, time management, the meaning of service, fundraising, District Convention, and more! Following these informational workshops, attendees enjoyed Vince’s delicious catering while bonding with their Key Club ohana. Members had an opportunity to share their RTC experience before attending the DCM and Spirit Session. The remainder of the afternoon was spent cheering in spirit battles and dancing to today’s hits! RTC was undoubtedly a memorable experience for all!

“Although this has been my first RTC, I didn't feel as nervous as I thought I would have. This experience has helped me become more open-minded and has helped me become comfortable around other Key Club members. Everyone had high spirits and were extremely kind. Overall, this RTC will be memorable and I hope to go to more RTC’s in the future.”

“This was my first RTC and it was amazing! I met so many new people and I learned so much more about Key Club. The workshops really helped me get out of my comfort zone and expanded my knowledge of Key Club. Jade and Aubrey were really nice and they helped me feel more comfortable and welcomed. This experience was so amazing, and it made me understand more.” —

“This RTC has been one of the best things I have ever

been a part of. Everything has made me have the “courage to engage.” That being said, I would like to personally thank everyone and especially Jade, Aubrey, and the SOAR High School community.”

“Today was my first time at RTC and it was so much fun! I did not do Key Club last year, so this was my first year and so far, I love it! RTC today was so much fun and I learned a lot from it! This has made me want to be more involved in Key Club and I am happy that I decided to go to RTC!” —

“With this being my first RTC session, I have to say that I was impressed with everyone’s work and preparation for it. My favorite was the session dedicated for secretaries, since I am SOAR’s secretary. RTC has been an amazing experience and I look forward to the next RTC session.”

“This was my first RTC and I learned a lot about what Key Club is, and it was a great experience. I learned about how big the Kiwanis Family actually is and all the things our family does for the community. Learning more about the offices has inspired me to be more involved in the club in years to come, and put myself out there. The RTC was a great team bonding meeting, and I’m glad that I went.” — (Gabby Nevarez from Lancaster pictured on left.)

Spotlight on SERVICE! October Focus: UNICEF Still looking for a service project for this month? Consider closing the month of October with a project to benefit

UNICEF and the Eliminate Project!

What is the Eliminate Project? Through The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 49,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. Mothers and babies in 19 countries are depending on Kiwanis to raise funds for lifesaving vaccines.

Event Ideas October is the perfect time to recruit Key Club members, begin fundraising for the Eliminate Project with UNICEF, and raise awareness for Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). Hosting exciting and themed events will allow you to mingle with the members, educate the community, and promote our Preferred Charities. Get out there this month, and let’s ELIMINATE MNT!

Eliminate Night

E-lemon-ate Stand

Host a social with Key Clubs in your area to have a fun night! Consider bowling, school lock-ins, and movie nights to kick it off. Provide food and activities related to the Eliminate Project, and proceeds from the event can be donated to the project.

A lemonade stand is both refreshing and fitting for the Eliminate Project! Sell glasses of lemonade at school lunches, parks, beaches, and at Key Club meetings to fundraise. It is a delicious way to stay hydrated and educate your community about MNT.
