MESSAGE Aloha owls! Wow, I can’t believe we are already more than half way through the year 2014. I mean, doesn’t it seem like it was just yesterday that we were raking those BEE-autiful autumn leaves and hoping it would snow? (mostly because we wanted to be snowed in and not go to school, am I right?) However, although the calendar year is already halfway over, we still have plenty of time in the Key Club year to forge new friendships with members in the division, fundraise for all of our service initiatives, serve our home, school, and community, and above all, to grow as a division! I hope all of you are taking advantage and soaking up the warm sun and the vitamin D! But above all, I hope that all club boards are taking advantage of the summer and having meetings to plan for the upcoming school year! I would also like to remind Boards to feel free to invite me to your meetings or any other events that you would like for me to attend! I wish you all fantastic August and I hope to see you all at our August DCM and Yard Sale Fundraiser! Details will be released soon! Thank you all for your service, happy readings! Oh and of course… L-O-V-E I LOVE MY D-I-V!

a letter from the editor WHAT’S UP OWLS?! Ah man, summer has come to an end. It’s time to crack open those books and study! *distant booing in the background* How did summer break pass by so quickly?! Since we are getting back in the flow of school and such, it’s time to get back into Key Club! I hope that all of you had a great summer and I hope that everyone tries their best this school year in both their grades and Key Club! You got this! Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read the August issue of The Owl Post and I hope you guys enjoy it! I’d also like to remind members that if you had a fun experience at a Key Club event, write an article! Articles don’t take long to write, needing only a few sentences about your experience, and will be featured in the newsletter if you send them on time (the 15th of every month). If you have any make sure to send them to the email: d38w.cnhkc.divtech@gmail.com! See you guys next month! Your Division News Editor, Tristine Nguyen

ICON

RECAP

Key Club International Convention was held in Anaheim, California from July 2nd through July 6th with over 1,600 other Key Clubbers attending from all across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean! ICON celebrates service and unifies Key Clubbers from different districts as an international organization! 4

How did you feel? “I fell in love with Key Club all over again. Realizing you have common interests in service and the same passions to be servant leaders as people across the nation and world is simply amazing.”

“ICON was the most incredible four days of my life, through workshops, meeting new people, and listening to inspirational people, I finally know what direction I want to take after high school. I also learned that ANYONE can make a difference.” -

“I got to crowd surf and it was amazing.”

“Although my diet consisted of protein bars, Starbucks, and random food given to me by friends for the time I was at ICON, I can honestly say that it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever experienced in my life. I have to say, it is one of the most unique and special feelings to be in a place with thousands of other people that come from all walks of life yet their beliefs all remain the same and that is—We can change the world , and we’ll do it together.”

This OTC this year was awesome! It was great meeting the new officers and getting to know them. The workshops were also very fun and helpful. It was such a great way to help start us all off with our new positions so that we can lead our clubs efficiently!

-Angella Dijamco, Quartz Hill High School Smiles, leadership, and unity all together? What? The June DCM/OTC was filled with all of the above. Learning about running Key Club along with my fellow owl leaders was definitely something that would improve the leadership team at my school. Oh! And who can forget the good ole game of "Don't let the balloon touch the floor. The DCM was probably the best way to make new friends and I’m glad I went!

RECOGNITION OFFICER OF THE MONTH: Alexandra Jonassen The officer of the month for July is Lancaster Key Club President Alexandra Jonassen! Alexandra has been an active member in the division long before her term as President. Not only has she been able to make submissions, keep up with good communication, but has been able to attend every division event! The passion she has for Key Club is great and her love for serving her home, school, and community has most definitely not gone unnoticed. Can I get an “Oh yeah!” for Alexandra?! Next time you see her, be sure tell her congratulations! (or ask her how she feels)

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: Nathalie Quintero SOAR's member of the month is Nathalie Quintero. She has been picked because she's always there to lend a helping hand. For example, although it was her summer vacation and it wasn’t mandatory for her to go, Nathalie went to visit the incoming freshman to present a Key Club presentation with me. She was more than happy to share her love for Key Club. For these reasons, she was selected as SOAR’s member of the month.
