Message from your LTG

Hoot, hoot! Mama Owl here! With summer flying by, I am so happy to know that you have all been keeping up with Key Club! Officer Training Conference was a great start for our summer of service. This recent Hunger Games DCM was a blast with all of you and I can't wait to plan more exciting events to bring in even more new members! The games were unforgettable and capture the flag was absolutely crazy. I will never forget the team chants that we all made! Versace, Versace, Versace! Mine so fine! Sweep them up! Fishing dubs! We have honestly had a great start this term, Owls! The DLT and I want to thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for all of the love and support you have given us over these past four months. I am so proud to hold the title of Mama Owl and I cannot imagine a better division to be a part of. Remember that now that school is starting up again, it is important to invite friends and even freshmen to join us so we can expand our nest! We have conquered summer together, now it's time for Fall Rally season! With Wings of Service, Aubrey Gilman Division 38 West Lieutenant Governor

otc / june dcm recap

On June 20th, Division 38 West held their Officer Training Conference, along with their June DCM! Key Clubbers, both members and officers, gathered at Paraclete High School for this great opportunity to learn more about leadership. Everyone came in colorful attire suited for a tropical vacation to go along with the theme, "We Know the Way to Service, How Far Will You Go for Service?", based on the movie, "Moana". The event commenced with icebreakers, club updates, and a few division announcements. After that was finished, it was time to head to the classrooms and get some tips on how to make the most of their term. Each attendee went to 5 different workshops of their choice. Topics included proper communication, fundraising, stress management, professionalism, how to bee-lieve in yourself, and much more!

Once all the presentations were over, everyone headed to the gym to start the service project. To fit the Moana-inspired theme, Heart of Te Fiti necklaces were painted to donate to the pediatric's ward of Antelope Valley Hospital. To conclude the DCM, D38W had their first spirit session which was led by the spirit coordinators, Dean, Raven, and Kevin! All were encouraged to scream their hearts out in a spirit battle, which was won by Raven's team! Another game that was played involved everyone to showcase their musical talents and sing songs that included a random word chosen by the spirit coordinators. With all that energy and spirit the owls had, they will definitely be some tough competition to beat at this year's Fall Rally! By the end of the day, attendees left a bit exhausted, but confident and hopeful for the new term! It is safe to say that this was another extremely successful event for Division 38 West!

Recognitions Member of the Month: Ben Haering Ben Haering is once again deserving of being named Paraclete's Member of the Month! In the past month, he has attended the June DCM/OTC, Paraclete's St. Vincent de Paul Drive and Social, as well as the July DCM! At the July DCM, he stayed after and picked up popped water balloons and trash with his brother Josh. Additionally, he expressed interest in stepping up as an officer. Ben Haering is and always has been a great example of a dedicated Key Club member, and he will surely continue to contribute greatly to the club's success. Ben is hardworking, dedicated, and involved, and he definitely deserves recognition!

Officer of the Month: Michelle Garcia For the month of July, I believe that Littlerock's Treasurer, Michelle Garcia, deserves the title of "Officer of the Month". She is very dedicated when it comes to her position being that she has held that role for the past three years! She is very experienced and is someone who the club can very much trust with all the financial matters. For the past three years that Michelle has been a member, the more we have seen her grow in her character. Littlerock is very honored to have Michelle Garcia as our treasurer!

Faculty Advisor of the Month: Mrs. Joanie Haynes Littlerock is very honored to announce Mrs. Joanie Haynes as Advisor of the Month for all the hard work that she puts into this club. She is always very supportive no matter what the situation is. I am very much excited for the upcoming year since we have such an awesome advisor. Her attitude towards Key Club is very positive and always bright! Mrs. Haynes is supportive both in and out of Key Club which makes her such an awesome person and advisor. Littlerock is so fortunate to have Mrs. Joanie Haynes as an Advisor!

Kiwanis Advisor of the Month: Mr. Richard Olmstead As always, Mr. Olmstead has been very caring and helpful in assisting all schools with any of their needs. We are very appreciative of his hard work and dedication! He has recently been elected as an International Kiwanis Trustee at the Kiwanis ICON in Paris. Though he has received this high position, he still makes time to cater to the needs of 38 West and chaperones our events! Congratulations Mr. Olmstead, the Owls are very proud of all that you have achieved!

Club of the Month: Highland High School Highland High School has had great participation in all of our division events! They have also contributed to their own local events including Thunder in the Lot. They even had new members attend July DCM, adding to our Key Club family. These members are dedicated, passionate, and enthusiastic, and I cannot wait to see how this term goes for them.

Congratulations Mr. Olmstead! Meet the new Kiwanis Interantional Trustee of the United States and Pacific Canada: Our very own Kiwanis Advisor, Mr. Olmstead! On July 14th, the 2017 Kiwanis International Convention was held in Paris and it was there that Mr. Olmstead was elected as International Trustee. We could not be prouder of Mr. Olmsead as he takes on this high position! He has done superbly in all of the duties he's taken on thus far, therefore we have no doubt that he will be amazing at this! On behalf of Division 38 West, we would like to thank you, Mr. Olmstead, for being the best Kiwanis Advisor we could have asked for. Whether it's chaperoning our events, giving guidance to our clubs, or even looking over the newsletters, you are always there for us! We are truly lucky to have you, not only because you carry out all your responsibilities and more, but because you put your heart and soul into helping us. We are bee-yond happy for you! Congratulations, Mr. Olmstead!

July DCM Thank you to all those that joined us for the first D38W Hunger Games at July DCM! We hope you had as much fun as we did! Watch out for the recap in next month's newsletter! Until then,

may the odds be ever in your favor!

Spotlight on Service July Focus: Go Outdoors! Take advantage of the warm, summer weather and promote a healthy lifestyle as you serve this month! Service Project Ideas: ◆ Volunteer at local runs and marathons to pass out drinks, act as route monitors, or help with registration. ◆ Help out at youth recreation centers, such as the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, or a local park's program, to manage equipment, supervise, or become an assistant coach for a summer team. ◆ Gather your fellow key clubbers, go to the nearest nature location, and do a clean-up with a clubbers to pick up trash and recyclables!

Fundraiser Ideas: ◆ Organize a picnic at the park! Charge a small price, grill hot dogs or burgers, and plan activities such as water fights or a summer olympics. ◆ Set up a car wash in an open park, school, or parking lot and ask for donations for charity. ◆ Sell water bottles at a running event in your community, such as a Color Run or a 5k race. You could even write encouraging messages on them to keep the runner's spirits up!

Hey Owls! I hope you all have had an amazing summer filled with sleep, netflix, sun, and of course, service! I’m immensely proud of all of you who haven’t stopped being active in the community, despite being on vacation! Also, can we talk about our June DCM/OTC and July DCM/Hunger Games? To be honest, I was slightly terrified of presenting at OTC, but I felt so comfortable after seeing how open and eager you all were to learn! The D38W Hunger Games was handsdown one of my favorite DCM’s! I mean, what better way to bond than by attacking each other with water balloons? Really, I could not be happier with how those two events turned out and it’s all thanks to you guys! Your enthusiasm and passion are what makes our Division so special, what makes every single moment in Key Club memorable, and what makes a huge, positive impact on this community! Keep all that excitement you had these past few months as you go into the new school year! May your clubs grow, fundraisers be prosperous, & service projects be successful! Until next month, owls! ~ Mariah Hernandez Division News Editor
