LTG’s LTG s Message ALOHA OWLS! Just like that, another month in the 2016-2017 term has passed. Whether it be spending time with friends and family or even watching movies at home, I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer. Please remember that Key Club is a year round organization, therefore, I hope everyone is taking advantage of time to volunteer and serve your community. Don’t forget to start working on the summer homework that you’ve been neglecting, as well as college apps (if you're a senior)! School is just around the corner, so it is imperative that you are getting ahead on your work and getting plenty of sleep. Start preparing for club rushes and, of course, for the first club meeting of the year. Cherish every moment of your Key Club journey, whether it be small or big. Meet new Key Clubbers, inspire them to take leadership roles, and serve your community with these newly made friends. I hope to see everyone at the upcoming DCM! Serving to Make a Change, JiMin Margarett Lee 3

Introducing... Your New Division News Editor! Hello BEE-utiful OWLS of D38W! My name is Jade Phoreman, and I am elated to inform you all that I will now be serving as your Division News Editor for the 2016-2017 term! I am a strong BEE-liever that as a connected and cooperative Key Club Ohana we are unstoppable! Building friendships, increasing communication, and strengthening our Ohana are some of my primary goals as I begin my term, so with that said, allow me to tell you a little bit about myself! I am a sophomore at Paraclete High School, and this will be my second year as a member of Key Club. I love to dance, sing, play guitar, work out, run track, and do yoga in the great outdoors! Besides my many hobbies, Key Club is a major part of my life, and I truly cannot express how grateful I am for the opportunity to serve as your News Editor for this term! Bonding with each and every one of you is only one of my numerous goals. I would like to include as many members as possible in each monthly newsletter. You know what that means! You could be in next month’s newsletter, so be sure to check it out on our brand new division website that I have put together for your convenience! I hope to see OWL of you soon! Service is my Purpose, Jade Phoreman Division 38 West News Editor 2016-2017 4

Letters from Your Executive Assistants Aloha fellow Owls! First off, I would like to say how grateful I am to be serving this division as an Executive Assistant. This is my second year on the Division Leadership Team, and I couldn't have asked for a better fit for me. There is something special about how this club makes me feel that inspires me every day to better this Key Club journey for all of you. This club and its members bring me true joy and happiness. I can honestly say that the members are in really good hands because our team this year is outstanding. I hope you all are looking forward to this upcoming term because we have been working very hard to give members an unforgettable year. We have a lot of new, exciting events in store for you all that I think will take our Division to a whole new level. If you think Key Club is simply service events and volunteering, think again. This year, we will also be focusing on creating friendships and memories that will last forever. Not to mention having a lot of fun along the way! Together, we will be building character and building an Ohana. Can't wait to see all of your smiling faces at the next DCM! Enjoy your summer! BEE the Reason Someone Smiles Today, Aubrey Gilman Division 38 West Executive Assistant 2016-2017

Recap: June OTC OTC, held on June 13th at The Palmdale Aerospace Academy, was a tremendous hit with the theme, "Finding Service!" Officers and members had the opportunity to attend training seminars organized by our exceptional DLT! These sessions undoubtedly inspired all attendees to become more involved in Key Club service and taught them how to do so!

Following the training, members spent time making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Grace Resources while also making bonds with fellow Key Clubbers. They also participated in a spirit battle “which tested [their] collaboration and spirit skills, and whomever won the spirit battle got the spirit stick to take to their school! -Arrianna Tadiosa

OTC definitely made a splash! Division 38 West is now o-fish-ally trained and ready to serve!

Recap: Boba Cove Fundraiser On June 20th, Division 38 West held a fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) at Boba Cove. Members received an e-flyer through email that could be shown at the time of their purchase at Boba Cove in order to donate 20% of the proceeds to our division. We raised $25 for PTP!

Spotlight on...

Service! This month, officers and members at SOAR went above and beyond in their service! On the 11th of June, members of SOAR Key Club went to Joe Davies Heritage Airpark in Palmdale to clean up SOAR’s airplane. For two hours in the morning, they were to wear raggedy apparel to clean up the airplane and picked up trash around the area. If members went they also got double community service hours which was a plus. “The people there were very nice and gave us some snacks. After we ate, we started cleaning our airplane, called Voodoo, and there wasn’t much trash around or weeds to pick up so when we finished that we just picked up other trash around the area. Overall, it was pretty productive and fun.” -Emelie Quintero, SOAR Key Club’s President On the 5th of July, three of SOAR’s Key Club Officers went around health classrooms during the freshmen’s summer school and introduced Key Club to them. [They] made up a presentation to show each classroom what Key Club is all about, the importance of community service, and got to show them some chants. Overall, we really got a lot of freshmen to be interested in joining Key Club before the new school year started. Articles and photos submitted by Arrianna Tadiosa, Tech Editor10for SOAR Key Club

Recognitions Club of the Month- SOAR SOAR has been a very active club since the beginning of the term. They never cease to amaze the division with their dedication and service to the community. Even during the summer when clubs often forget that Key Club is a year-round organization, SOAR has been diligent and unwavering in serving their home, school, and community. Whether it be the members constantly striving to help set up at DCM’s, frequent communication between the officers, or their undying passion to serve, SOAR has made Division 38 West proud. SOAR is always excited to serve with passion and care, while also having lots of spirit and fun. Keep up the great work!

Member of the Month- Jade Phoreman Paraclete Key Club's member of the month for July is Jade Phoreman! Summer can get very hectic with vacations and summer work. For most people it is hard for them to find time for Key Club, unless however you are Jade Phoreman. She has been on top of her tasks from submitting the monthly report form on time to helping recruit up to seven new key club members for the 2016 to 2017 term. This will ensure a smooth and prosperous start for the upcoming school year. Congratulations, keep up the good work!

Officer of the Month- Michael Loria Michael Loria currently serves as the president of Paraclete’s Key Club. He always tries his best to attend service events and/or DCMs, and he is constantly reaching out for feedback or even just to say hello. Michael Loria is always looking for different/new service projects as well as fundraisers to take the club he serves to new heights.

Recognitions Kiwanis Advisor of the Month- Mr. Richard Olmstead Mr. Olmstead never fails to keep the division on track. Although he has a very busy retired life, he never forgets to put lots of work and care into Key Club and mentoring the officers, DLT members, and of course, the division. He fulfills all his duties as a Kiwanian and also as a region advisor. When you see Mr. Olmstead, always thank him for all his hard work.

Faculty Advisor of the Month– Ms. Yvonne Gonzales Ms. Gonzales has been trying to arrange for the officers from Desert Sands to attend different Division Events. Desert Sands Charter is a very unique club because in order for Officers to come to the different events hosted on the division level (such as DCMs and Training Conferences) the principal must approve of their attendance. Ms. Gonzales has reached out and informed the Division about their situation, and they are hoping that they will be able to attend more events in the future.
