XIN CHAO! HOLA! NI-HAO! SHALOM! How are all of my BEE-AUTIFUL and WIDE-EYED Owls doing so far? I hope you guys had an exploding 4th of July! I empathize with all of you. We all dread the fact that summer is almost at an end and we can’t sleep in or sleep late anymore. However, summer ending isn’t always a bad situation, in all of our cases, it can be wonderful! It means more service projects, fundraisers, and socials to bring up more fun in our division during the school year. It means countless opportunities for YOU to participate with our division in helping our community become a better place and environment to live in. 4 months in to the term and I honestly can’t wait to show you all what the Division Leadership Team has in store for all of you lovely girls and boys for the rest of our 2013-2014 term! BEE SURPRISED ABOUT WHAT IS TO COME! The Division Leadership Team and I are more than sure we will exceed your expectation on what events will happen and all of the meaningful memories that we will all make this year! Before you move on to the next page in our wonderful division newsletter, I want you all to know that we appreciate each and every one of you for being a part of Key Club International this far, without all of you guys and girls we wouldn’t be the division that we are today. And I know for a fact that we WILL become an even better and bigger division in the very near future! Remember, Key Club never ends! Hopefully, most of you will be able to attend our division fundraiser at Vince’s Pizza on the 30th! If not, I hope to see many of your magnificent selves at our anticipated August DCM/Scavenger Hunt on the 24th of August! I hope to see you all soon and remember, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or even ideas about anything you would like to do this year, please let me know at d38w.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com! From now on, in every newsletter I will be inputting a challenge at the end of these letters, challenging all of you to achieve this task by the end of the month. Act of Kindness: Hold the door open for someone! Till next time, Owls! With love and through service,

Cecilia Nguyen

OWLS SOCIAL RECAP On June 22, Division 38th West had an Owls’ Social to celebrate a year of service with fellow members. This year the social was hosted at our very own Danielle Galli’s house. Check out all the amazing pictures below!

GARAGE SALE RECAP The garage sale was hosted by our very known Kiwanis advisor Ms. Lum. Key clubbers donated books, random trinkets, and clothing to be sold and raised about $77.51. All of the proceeds go to Eliminate Project.

ARTICLES AND VISUALS DANIELLE GALLI’S SUMMER SOCIAL DAY Were you at the Key Club Summer Social? If you were then you probably had a great time with your fellow Key Clubbers! At the social on June 22nd, Key Clubbers had an amazing time swimming, hanging out, and eating unhealthy amounts of junk food and chocolate! Everyone who attended was able to spend time with their fellow key clubbers by playing pool games, eating, and relaxing in the Jacuzzi. It was exciting to see all the key clubbers in our division and have fun in the summer sun! - Danielle Galli

JASMINE MCLENNAN ON THE GARAGE SALE Our garage sale went pretty well. We arranged all of the items and then priced them. We all had a great time when we had customers. Even though we woke up early, it didn't even seem like it because customers came so quickly. We made more money than we even expected to. I'd recommend we try this again. - Jasmine McLennan

ARTICLES AND VISUALS JUSTIN TRUONG’S FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH KEY CLUB Participating in the Key Club car wash was very interesting in many different circumstances whether at a moment in time or overall. The QHHS Key Club car wash event was an amazing first experience in meeting some of the members, helping the community, seeing how the club functions/ cooperates, and just having a fun experience. Meeting the first few members of the club was absolutely awesome; you guys have such inviting personalities and made me fit in as if I was already a long term member. Another thing was that I was constantly having fun around you guys, and got a good laugh almost every moment I was there. It was also very enjoyable helping the community although with such a small cause of simply washing cars for a day. Although some communication is difficult, you guys always get the job done with adequate or more results. It seemed pretty well organized due to the proper equipment, committed baking goods, and helpful members. Even when slight problems occur, such as a hose, members stayed in control and found a solution showing that this club functions quite well. I feel absolutely ecstatic to participate in this club, and look forward to the next four years of dedication mixed with fun. I do believe that Key Club deserves way more members for being so beneficial to society, as well as, one’s self. I may have left a little sunburned and really tired, but the over-all experience of pure joy, community benefit, and productivity ensures my return to these types of events. - Justin Truong

ARTICLES AND VISUALS FANTA SINAYOKO’S FANTASTIC DAY AT THE GARAGE SALE Hello! My name is Fanta Sinayoko and I am the Tech Editor of Soar High School’s Key Club. I am glad that I participated in such a meaningful cause for Project Eliminate by donating items and attending the Garage sale, where numerous items were sold totaling to $77.50 towards Project Eliminate! Much of the Division 38th West’s Division Leadership Team attended and each contributed to the items to be sold at the garage sale, and of course along with some of the lovely Key Club members of our division who contributed various items as well. After we helped set up at 6 am and the garage sale officially commenced, our display caught their interest and soon copious amounts of customers bought clothing, stuffed, animals, books, etc. all under five dollars. We aided and treated each and every customer with eagerness and joy, enhancing their experience as well as ours. In the end I was very satisfied with the money we made to aid Project Eliminate and we used the left over stuffed animals to donate to the hospital for children in need. Overall it was a great success financially and socially, and I would love to participate in another garage sale like this again. - Fanta Sinayoko

CAR WASH AND BAKE TIME WITH TRISTINE NGUYEN Baking desserts and washing cars with my fellow key clubbers was very fun yet tiring. But I'm glad at the success of it and the cause the money is going towards. I'm also grateful to the generous people that came! I never thought I would say I would get tired of baking, but as long as I'm with my key clubbers it's worth while! - Tristine Nguyen

OFFICER OF THE MONTH

HOORAH FOR BRITTNEE BUI 1) Why did you join key club? I joined Key Club because in middle school, I had a really fun time doing community service in CJSF. It felt god to know that my efforts were going towards a greater good, so when I learned about Key Club, I decided that I would continue contributing to the community. 2) What are you looking forward to this upcoming term? Recruiting new members; Quartz Hill has always been small in terms of its active members, so I really want to expand our club through new projects, like the Christmas gram ideas our board came up with. The entire idea of Quartz Hill being active gets me excited, since it was so inactive for a long time. 3) What would you like to achieve this year? My goals are to increase my club membership with active members, each with 50 hours of service. I want to make sure that Quartz Hill becomes one of the most spirited clubs and that we can raise $1000 for PTP and project Eliminate. 4) What are two of your favorite movies? New Police Story and Life of Pi 5) Describe yourself in 3 words Sarcastic, Caring, Human.

T he

Pediatric Trauma Progra Program m

What is PTP? The Pediatric Trauma Program was established by the Kiwanis Cali - Nev - Ha Foundation in 1994, focusing on the needs for education and training in injury prevention and pediatric trauma. Their mission statement is Ęşto develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our district who are killed or injured by trauma.Ęş The leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States is pediatric trauma, or unintentional injury. Every year, more children die from easily be preventable pediatric trauma than all childhood diseases combined!

What Can I Do To Help? You can help your club and the division provide awareness and prevent pediatric trauma by making sure the community is educated on safety and any possible hazards, having a donation drive on items such as bicycle helmets and child safety seats, and much, much more! You can also assist the children that were involved in trauma by collecting items of comfort, such as stuffed animals and blankets, to donate. You can even make cards to help cheer up the children!

Project

E L I M I N AT E

A birth of a newborn is a joyous event in any lifetime. However, in 38 different countries, that amazing event can quickly turn into a tragedy. With the YOU Eliminate Project, Kiwanis InternaARE READY TO HELP? tional and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease takes the life of one baby every nine minutes — nearly 60,000 innocent babies every year. That’s 60,000 babies a year that will never grow up, play with friends, hear their mother’s laugh, or even dream about their future. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. District Project PROJECT JUMP START Last year, the California-Nevada-Hawaii District began a new district project: Project Jump Start. This 2-year project is geared towards providing children from ages 0-5 a jump start during the most crucial years of an infant’s life. Project Jump Start is a great way to give back to your communities and give infants the jump start they need to succeed, one baby step at a time. The potential of Division 38 West is more than enough to make an impact on our communities through Project Jump Start. Project Jump Start allows children to have a successful childhood, and to one day grow to be competent, caring leaders like each and every one of us are today. By providing this support to young children, we are giving them the opportunity to grow and become strong-willed individuals. Not only does this project affect our communities, but it goes as far as to provide a benefit to children internationally. By focusing on children’s education, health, safety, and wellbeing – we will be giving children all around the world equal opportunities to have a fresh and vibrant beginning, a jump start. Now here’s the fun part: how to get involved. Simply, by finding a project, or even better, making your own. Working with local organizations is a great way to get involved in the District Project. Even Key Club International’s service partners: UNICEF, Children’s Miracle Network, and March of Dimes support our objectives in Project Jump Start. The amounts of service projects are endless, so what are you waiting for? I’m looking forward to hearing about your club participating in Project Jump Start. By submitting articles, visuals, and a description of your project to Sushiel Kangakar at d38w.cnhkc.divnews@gmail.com, you have a chance to be spotlighted on the CNH Cyberkey for the whole district to see your involvement in the District Project. Subjects in any visuals you submit must sign a photo release form, which can be found on the Cyberkey. Together, Division 38 West can make an impact: one baby step at a time.
