Hello, 38 West Owls! My name is Jannah Villaflor and I am extremely excited to serve as your Executive Assistant for the next year! I'm a soon-to-be junior, tennis player, Harry Potter junkie, my favorite past time is sleeping, I have a fear of heights, and hope that you get to know me more in the future! Soon many of our dedicated members will be graduating, but I'm confident we can take the reigns and lead our division to new heights. I'm ready for a year of service, new friendships, spirit, accomplishments, and hope that all of you are, too! Let's make this a year to remember! (:

Hello beautiful people! My name is Kelly Lee, and I will be your Key Club Division Secretary for the 2013-2014 year. I am currently attending Paraclete High School, and I love meeting people and learning new things. Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Sushiel Kangakar and I’m your new News Editor. I’m currently a junior at Quartz Hill High School (GO REBELS!) and am super excited to be here. Couple of things you guys should know about me: I love Key Club and I’m super social. This year I want more members to be aware of our newsletters and key club’s involvement social media sites. I plan to start a tumblr, instagram, and a web site where all key clubbers can connect on what’s going on. Go owls and be BEEutiful!

Hello 38 West! My name is Susan Chor and I’m honored to be serving as the 20132014 Kiwanis Family and Foundation (KFF) District Chair. If you know our Lt. Governor, Cecilia Nguyen, well, you probably know me well too. I am a sophomore in the pre-IB/honors program at Highland High School. I run cross-country, and am affiliated with a number of clubs besides my beloved Key Club including: GSA, CSF, CreAsian, and soon, AP Club. Additionally, I’ve played piano for a great number of years. In the little free time I have, I enjoy watching Asian dramas, reading manga or hanging out with my friends. Something I enjoy all the time though is food! Some of my favorite foods include ice cream, clam chowder, bread, pasta, Korean BBQ, sushi rolls, Pocky and chocolate. Although I’m a district board member, 38 West is my home division, so I’ll always be available when my division needs me whether it be Key Club-related or not. Please get in contact with me especially, if your matters are Kiwanis-family-related. I am a firm believer of leadership through example, so I’ll be at most, if not all, division events in which I hope to see many new faces.

Hey there, Division 38 West Owls! Welcome to the vey first Division Newsletter for the term of 2013-2014! Isn’t this exciting? I would like to formally introduce you all to a promising, memoryfilled,new term! With our warm smiles, friendly laughter, and strive to achieve countless hours of service, we, as a family, will have a GOLDEN year! In addition, I would like to thank those who were able to attend our first Division Council Meeting/ Banquet on May 4th, if you weren’t able to attend I hope to see many of you at our next DCM/Fundraiser on May 27th at Lancaster City Park! We have lots of exciting events coming up soon, so look forward to them! I know we have all been pretty busy with SAT’s AP tests, finals, projects, and not to mention all the hard work you guys put into your clubs but don’t fret! You’re almost done with the year! ARTICLES & VISUALS SAVES- HIGHLAND My experience when attending the volunteer service at SAVES was a great one. I was with a few members of my key club. We did a couple activities that day. Our day consisted of a couple activities, the city of Palmdale employees cut down bushes in front of the building. Members of key club and i carried the branches to the trash can. We also helped loosen the sand around the roots of the bushes so it would be easier for the roots to be pulled out by the truck. At last we helped clean all the mess that was made when all the work was done, which was rake the leaves and flatten out the sand where the roots where taken out. All in all the experience was very fun with everyone who attended, we shared lots of laughs and ate pizza when we where finished thanks to Daniela's parents. -Elizabeth Ruvalcaba

1) What do you like about Key Club? I like the chance to do community service and to hang out with people I care about. The chance to do the community service and help people makes me feel like I am making a difference and makes me feel good. 2) Do you have any favorite Key Club memories? Too many. We manage to make fun with whatever we are doing so whether it be tearing down and hauling tree trunks or the amazing DCON, I can say I will remember all of the things I did with Key Club. 3) What do you like to do in your free time? I have many hobbies but a few that I do more than anything is, fish, bowl and play guitar. Fishing is what I want to do for the rest of my life and the other stuff is what I do when I'm not on the water. 5) How has Key Club changed you? Key Club has made me a better person. When someone asks me to do something, I feel much better about it and I feel great about helping. Key Club has helped me help people more than I already would've and it also helped prepare me for later situations in my life. From wearing business clothing for events, to directing people when I was a leader figure, Key Club helped me practice real life situations that may be useful to me in later years

Pediatric Trauma Progra Program m

What is PTP? The Pediatric Trauma Program was established by the Kiwanis Cali - Nev - Ha Foundation in 1994, focusing on the needs for education and training in injury prevention and pediatric trauma. Their mission statement is Ęşto develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our district who are killed or injured by trauma.Ęş The leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States is pediatric trauma, or unintentional injury. Every year, more children die from easily be preventable pediatric trauma than all childhood diseases combined!

What Can I Do To Help? You can help your club and the division provide awareness and prevent pediatric trauma by making sure the community is educated on safety and any possible hazards, having a donation drive on items such as bicycle helmets and child safety seats, and much, much more! You can also assist the children that were involved in trauma by collecting items of comfort, such as stuffed animals and blankets, to donate. You can even make cards to help cheer up the children!

A birth of a newborn is a joyous event in any lifetime. However, in 38 different countries, that amazing event can quickly turn into a tragedy. With the YOU Eliminate Project, Kiwanis InternaARE READY TO HELP? tional and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease takes the life of one baby every nine minutes — nearly 60,000 innocent babies every year. That’s 60,000 babies a year that will never grow up, play with friends, hear their mother’s laugh, or even dream about their future. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. District Project PROJECT JUMP START Last year, the California-Nevada-Hawaii District began a new district project: Project Jump Start. This 2-year project is geared towards providing children from ages 0-5 a jump start during the most crucial years of an infant’s life. Project Jump Start is a great way to give back to your communities and give infants the jump start they need to succeed, one baby step at a time. The potential of Division 38 West is more than enough to make an impact on our communities through Project Jump Start. Project Jump Start allows children to have a successful childhood, and to one day grow to be competent, caring leaders like each and every one of us are today. By providing this support to young children, we are giving them the opportunity to grow and become strong-willed individuals. Not only does this project affect our communities, but it goes as far as to provide a benefit to children internationally. By focusing on children’s education, health, safety, and wellbeing – we will be giving children all around the world equal opportunities to have a fresh and vibrant beginning, a jump start. Now here’s the fun part: how to get involved. Simply, by finding a project, or even better, making your own. Working with local organizations is a great way to get involved in the District Project. Even Key Club International’s service partners: UNICEF, Children’s Miracle Network, and March of Dimes support our objectives in Project Jump Start. The amounts of service projects are endless, so what are you waiting for? I’m looking forward to hearing about your club participating in Project Jump Start.
