from the ltg

Aloha, Owls! Do you smell that? That special something? That BEE-autiful smell of a new year filled with opportunities, service, and ohana? Although the new year has just begun, the Key Club year is almost to its end! This truly has been a year of benevolent service, diligent leadership, and an awakening of the altruistic spirit that embodies each and every one of you in Division 38 West. As my term as your Lt. Governor nearly comes to a close, I’d like to thank you all for everything YOU do for this wonderful, spirited, and kind division. Let’s give these last few months our all and ensure our mark in D38W history and BEE-yond!

GRACE ‘ Resource center TRISTINE NGUYEN / QUARTZ HILL HIGH SCHOOL

On the week of Thanksgiving break, many volunteers came together at Grace Resource Center to help prepare necessities for families during Thanksgiving. Whether it be from packing bags filled with food to transporting the supplies, the work that was done was rewarding. It was heartwarming to see the joy and gratefulness that everyone displayed. It was especially heartwarming to see volunteers of such young ages out there helping and it showed me that, no matter what age, everyone is able to make a positive contribution to their community. Because of the hard work that everyone put into this, I was motivated to try even harder in improving our community.

2014 MARK CURAMING / QUARTZ HILL HIGH Fall Rally was such a bittersweet experience for me. Getting to spend the day together with my fellow key clubbers is always a great time but I was sad that this was my last Fall Rally. During my time as a member of Key Club in high school, each year I would look forward to Fall Rally because it’s one of the only days I get to see so many key clubbers from all around in one place. Seeing all these key clubbers show so much energy and spirit just made me feel so happy to be a part of such an amazing club. RICHARD BALLENA / HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL This was my first year attending Fall Rally and it was amazing! I met and took selfies with Key Clubbers coming all the way from Las Vegas and Honolulu. Everyone was really friendly, especially those giving free hugs. I can't wait to go back next year! KIM MA / HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL Fall Rally South, once again, was an absolutely amazing experience. Not only did Key Club raise over $160,000 for Pediatric Trauma Program for this event, but also we joined each other in expressing how we feel. Division 38 West has cheered their hearts out during the first rally and made it to the final spirit rally although we had brought less than 100 members. After the rally, we were free to go around Six Flags and meet the other Key Clubbers who attended this event. This was my last Fall Rally and it was extremely memorable. 9

The eliminate project

WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT? In 2010, Kiwanis International and UNICEF joined forces to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) worldwide. This historic initiative, called The Eliminate Project, will protect the lives of babies and mothers all over the globe and aims to help put an end to this cruel, centuries-old disease.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE ELIMINATE PROJECT? The Eliminate Project aims to raise US$110 million and save the lives of a 129 million mothers and their future babies. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis is committing by 2015 to eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY FUNDRAISED GO TOWARDS? To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
