CNH District | Region 5 | Division 38 West

Greetings from our Lt. Governor HAPPY NEW YEAR’S OWLS! I hope all of you are having a wonderful holiday break so far! It seems like just yesterday it was the beginning of the year 2013 and now it’s a fresh new beginning; a new year. Take the time to reflect on the past year and ask yourself what have you accomplished, what mistakes did you make, what did you cherish the most, and what obstacles did you have to face and how did you overcome them? Not only will this make you become more aware of the direction you are in but also gives you a chance to either improve yourself or simply stay the same. So with that being said, I want to take the time and say I am truly so happy that our division has grown so much over the past year. Our division has gained 3 new clubs, performed over 500+ service hours, raised $1,500 for our district’s preferred charities, as well as set a nice family bond within our division. Words cannot explain how proud and honored I am to serve such an amazing division. So with the need of an opportunity to celebrate the new year with all of your beloved 38 West Owls, you all should be excited for our “Owl New Year” January DCM Party and Talent Show! Be sure to look for more details in the newsletter! Furthermore, even with the accomplishments that we have made over the past year, this does not mean we stop serving or funding. With seeing how much we have achieved, we are to be more motivated and passionate about making those numbers even higher and bigger. As corny as it may sound, let us metaphorically become Owls and search through the sky and perform even more wonderful hours of service. Be sure to take advantage of the new year and find more service opportunities and try to make families and citizens of our community to also have a great beginning of the new year as well. Keep attending Key Club meetings so you can learn more on how you can make a difference! Also be sure to check in with important division updates and reminders to know what kind of events the Division Leadership Team has in store for all of you! If you haven’t already and would like to be added to the Division 38 West Google Group Reflector, please do not hesitate to send me an email at d38w.cnhkc.ltg@gmail.com! Have a great day and enjoy the rest of our Division Newsletter made by our own Division Newsletter Editor, Jeanie Paek!

Cecilia Nguyen

Letter from the Editor Hello Owls! It is now 2014! Hope you are all ready to take on the new year! Have you made any New Year Resolutions? Let’s start our year off with some service! I hope you are all ready to get yourselves back into school as well! As grueling as that sounds, without school, we wouldn’t be able to have found Key Club! So, pat yourselves on the back for going to school and get yourselves pumped up to engage in some new service projects! We have many events coming up, including the Division Talent Show, DCM, Elections, and CONCLAVE! In the meantime, remember to take a break once in a while! And as always, TRY NOT TO PROCRASTINATE! :) Have a GOLDEN month and until next time, Jeanie Paek 2013–2014 Division Newsletter/Technology Editor

Event Recaps Highland Book Sale: “The Book Sale at Legacy Commons on December 14, 2013 was an event in which my key club, as well as other key clubs volunteered by asking for money and book donations to read to children (K-2) for an event later in February. The event was fun because I got to spend time with my president and other fellow key clubbers. Our tasks were to advertise donation centers to the customers, dress up as story book characters and advertise on the street, as well as setting up and cleaning up the area. I would recommend this event, and similar events in the future. “

Mikela Reyes Highland

Rose Float Recap: “On the 28th of December, our division took a bus ride down to Pasadena to attend Rose Float Decorations at the Brookside Pavilion. There we were able to assist the student members of the California Polytechnic State Universities—Pomona and San Luis Obispo—and hundreds of other volunteers to help bring to life the design of “Bedtime Stories”. Members of our division were able to see how organic materials were used to bring color and texture to the float. Though we endured strenuous tasks, when watching the completed float on New Years Day, the wave of excitement and accomplishment felt great. I hope to participate in many more events, like Rose Float Decorating, in the future.”

Event Recaps Dance For A Chance Recap: “The success of the December DCM/ Dance was truly amazing. All of the effort of the Division Leadership team was worth it as Key Clubbers from all schools left with a smile. The dance was to raise money for the Philippines, because they were hit by a deadly typhoon, and the Division earned 87 dollars with the help of the bake sale. The theme was Winter Wonderland, so the tables were filled with fake snow, and snowflakes and Christmas lights were present all around the room. The DJ played great music that kept me dancing all night, and I was happy to get to know some new people from other schools. Dance for a Chance was the first dance that I have attended for the Key Club division and it has been one of my most memorable experiences with Key Club thus far.”

Fanta Sinayoko SOAR

Grace Resource Center Recap: “The Saturday before Thanksgiving, some members from the division went to Grace Resource Center to help out with their annual Thanksgiving meal handouts. Even though it took some time from our sleeping schedules, it was definitely worth it! The center was packed with many families receiving bags and volunteers, it was such a giving and friendly atmosphere! Since the packing of the bags was done the night before, we mostly just lugged the heavy food bags wherever the leaders directed us. Because many volunteers showed up that morning, we got to finish earlier than anticipated and even got to have the leftover desserts that was being served. It was a very humbling opportunity and I'm glad to have taken part of it! “

Owl-standing Members of the Month Highland: Richard Ballena “Richard Ballena was chosen as member of the month of Highland's club for December because of his participation in past and upcoming events. Before this, Richard has attended all of Key Clubs events and has signed up in advance for upcoming service projects, fundraisers, and socials.”
