On behalf of all the members at Albany United FC, we would like to acknowledge and THANK the following foundations for their contributions

Albany United Football Club Rashaad VAHED President’s Message We welcome everyone to Rosedale Park for what we trust will be an enjoyable day of football.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers, managers, coaches, supporters, staff, sponsors and my fellow board members for all your hard work in making our club successful.

This year marks the clubs 39th season and we hope to add to the clubs great history while building a sustainable sports home for the future centric around our community.

To the hard work the squad puts in every week, Thank You. You wear the club jersey and colours with pride that stands testament to many people that currently and previously put in to make our club a success and a home. Our past is important to remember so we don't’ forget who we are while creating new history. So Thank you to everyone in the club.

Around the club we haven’t had a great start to the season. We are now back up with all fields running although with some games on Friday night, we are taking the opportunity to rest some of the fields to ensure the surfaces stay in pristine condition.

To the club we also welcome Simon and The Chinese Sports Association in a joint partnership. They kicked off their season last week and from feedback from Simon, everything went exceptionally well. Welcome to you, board, supporters and membership.

Successfully our Junior Committee has launched the cluster training in the midgets sector of the club. Feedback has been outstanding and numbers continue to grow every week. The committee is delighted and with ASHS coming on board to assist run the programme, only continued success seems to be outcome. Sam, Kie and Ross, superb!

Today’s main fixture we welcome Te Atatu AFC’s squad, supporters and officials to the ‘Dale for the Chatham Cup round 1 fixture. A disappointing loss last week with a scoreline that did not really show the game in context. We showed again that we can match the leaders of the league but must take the hard work being put in and show it on the scoreline. Grab the opportunities given to us and that we create, else the opposition will do so gladly. The team has an opportunity to show their hard work today to their supporters, and an opportunity to turn that work into a desired result. Take it today!

Best of luck to our coaching and management staff and the squad for their respective fixtures today.

To all our Senior teams both home and away; U19s, Africans, Wanderers, Athletic, Humble, Red, Champs, Brewers, Colombians, North End, Watsons Heroes, Devils Rock, Redmen, Undertakers, Nortons, Originals and our Women’s team ….. do us proud.

Welcome to all our opposition and supporters to Rosedale. I wish you an enjoyable day and invite you to relax in our clubrooms after

Albany United Football Club Junior Committee The Junior Committee have worked tirelessly over the early parts of this year to get cluster trainings up and running for the Midgets which successfully started this week. Kieron Henare, has been running the sessions on both Tuesday and Thursday with excellent feedback from the coaches.

Cluster trainings is a new initiative for Albany UTD and we believe that this will help create a community within the club and not only help develop players but also coaches as a group. It means the club can provide more support to the parent coaches that very kindly give up their time every week to take the teams and hopefully helps coaches with some ideas and activities for the kids to enjoy, engage in, and also develop their footballing abilities and skills as players.

Another big thank you to Albany Senior High who are assisting in managing the programme

Albany United Football Club Chatham Cup The draw was made at the New Zealand Football offices at QBE Stadium in Auckland, with supervision from Terry Hobin, the Competitions Manager at the Northern Football Federation.

Daniel Farrow, the New Zealand Football Head of National Competitions, said there was always huge anticipation leading into the draw for the Chatham Cup which has been contested since 1923.

“It is day that football clubs all around New Zealand look forward to,” said Farrow. “The Chatham Cup is a tournament that is steeped in history and tradition, and we are really pleased to announce that we have had greater interest in 2016 with 130 teams registering. Every club wants to get their hands on the trophy at the final on September 11, and that journey for many clubs begins today with the draw for the preliminary rounds now completed.”

The preliminary round, contested on April 23-25 around the country.

The Chatham Cup is contested by teams from throughout New Zealand, and has been held annually in all but five of the past 93 years.

All matches which finish in a draw after 90 minutes will be decided by extra time and penalty shoot-outs.

The cup itself was gifted to the then New Zealand Football Association in 1922 by the crew of HMS Chatham as a token of appreciation for the hospitality they had encountered on a visit to New Zealand. The actual trophy is modelled on the FA Cup.

The most successful teams in the history of the Chatham Cup have been Mount Wellington (seven wins, two of them since amalgamation with Auckland University), ahead of Christchurch United and North Shore United, and Eastern Suburbs AFC who claimed the title in 2015 (six wins each).

Last year, Eastern Suburbs AFC secured the Chatham Cup when they defeated Napier City Rovers 2-1 in extra-time at The Trusts Arena in Henderson. A 105th minute goal to Damien Mosquera broke a 1-1 deadlock between the two sides in sudden death, paving the way for the Kohimarama-based club to secure their first national knockout cup crown since 1969 and complete a league and cup double in the process.

QUOTE “The Chatham Cup has been the centrepiece of the domestic winter football schedule for almost 90 years. That storied history and tradition is built on every season with a raft of dramatic twists and turns and I’m sure this year’s competition will be no different.” NZ Football Community Director Cam Mitchell

Albany United Football Club First Team It’s Chatham Cup time at Rosedale and my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to James Colligan and all the players, staff and supporters of Te Atatu AFC for the first of two encounters between the two teams over the next seven days. Congratulations are also due to Te Atatu for their success in the Joma Men’s Northern Pre-Season Tournament; beating NRFL Premier League Glenfield Rovers 2-0 in the final to earn their first silverware of the season. After Round 8 of the season Te Atatu sit in 7th position in the league, 4 points ahead of Albany who currently lie in 9th position. Te Atatu’s largest victory of the season was an impressive 8-0 thumping of Northland FC just a few weeks ago. I’ve seen Te Atatu play a couple of times already this season and they look to be solid at the back, well organised in midfield, with some genuine firepower up-front, so we fully expect to come up against a tough opponent today. Moving on to Albany Utd – The good news is that since the last time of writing we managed to earn our second league victory of the season with a fine 3-2 home win over Claudelands Rovers, and goals from Haz, Jack and Josh C-T helping to move us clear of the relegation zone. Unfortunately, this was followed up by two successive away defeats against Manakau City and then Fencibles Utd last weekend. Whilst the final 4-1 scoreline against Fencibles was obviously disappointing it didn’t in my opinion truly reflect the encouraging football played by the Albany lads, who in the second half alone managed to create three 1-on-1 situations with the opposition goalkeeper (who made two fine saves and managed to turn a third onto the post). But the lads kept pushing forward and were eventually rewarded when Leewaine finished off a fine move to narrow the gap and score his first goal of the season. Hopefully, we can take that brand of attacking football into today’s game and put in a solid 90 minute performance to earn a passage into the second round draw. I’m sure both teams would like to be involved in the draw on Monday and pull out one of the big named Premier teams in the second round! Finally, I encourage the ‘Red Army’ to enjoy themselves on the side-lines today and create a big Chatham Cup party atmosphere in support of the team, in return we will do all we can on the park to play to our potential and provide the result everyone at the club is hoping for!
