RIP Stephen Gove

Albany United Football Club Honour and Tribute to Stephen Gove

Football family, It's with a heavy heart that we write this. A past member, Stephen Gove, has sadly passed away after battling cancer. Known affectionately to most as Govey, Stephen was an all-round great guy that definitely lit up the room. Regardless of whether or not people understood what he was saying. You see, Govey was of Scottish background; and this fact, when coupled his passion for football, resulted in a few hilarious misunderstandings. Of more importance, though, was Govey's significant contribution to Albany United during his time with us. When not scoring the most ludicrous goals against people sometimes less than half is age, Govey was always eager to share his knowledge of the beautiful game; and, for this, we are truly thankful. Govey was an inspiration to a great number of our members; and, whilst we can't replace the legend, we'll always remember him. Our thoughts go out to Fiona, Lara, Kelvin, Jordan, Daryl, and the rest of the Gove family.

Club Sponsors

On behalf of all the members at Albany United FC, we would like to acknowledge and THANK our club sponsors for their contributions.

President’s Message

We welcome everyone to Rosedale Park for what we trust will be an enjoyable day of football.

We have grown again this year in many areas and with our project launches thus far will we hope to see more people in our colours.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers, managers, coaches, supporters, staff, sponsors and my fellow board members for all your hard work in making our club successful.

To the Gove family our sincere condolences on the passing of Stephen. He played an important part of the clubs history and we will always be in his debt. We were truly thankful for the time he spent with us in both a playing and coaching role. Its an absolute honour to have had him part of our club and we thank you for allowing us that time with him. We ask everyone today to share a moment of silence in honour of Govey. Thank you to you all.

Today’s main fixture we welcome Onehunga Mangere and their supporters to the ‘Dale for the NRFL fixture. Today’s task is a must win for both clubs sitting 2 points from each other and in the bottom half of the table. We are growing in statue and very unlucky to come away without the three points on our last home game but we still have much to do to bring consistency in our performances and results.

To the hard work the squad puts in every week, Thank You. You wear the club jersey and colours with pride that stands testament to many people that currently and previously put in to make our club a success and a home. Our past is important to remember so we don't’ forget who we are while creating new history. So really Thank you to everyone in the club .

Our Reserves do deserve a mention for the results they have put together but its not only on the field that they deserve a mention. Its off field as well as the support and encouragement they provide the club and First Team is tremendous and it doesn’t stop there ...we will call it advice to the match officials and visiting teams I’m sure is thoroughly welcomed. Today’s fixture for them in the NRFL Reserves sees them also take on Onehunga Mangere Reserves. First time these two met in round 1, our reserves managed to get 6 and came away with the three points, so no doubt Onehunga will be here for revenge.

Best of luck to Ian, Chris, Junior, Gary, Bill & Mahmoud and the squad for fixtures today.

To all our Senior teams both home and away; U19s, Africans, Athletic, Red United , Young Poles, Humble FC, Redmen, Champs, Brewers, North End, Watsons Heroes, Mad Dogs, DevilsRock United, Originals and Nortons, do us proud.

Welcome to all our opposition and supporters to Rosedale. I wish you an enjoyable day and invite you to relax in our clubrooms after.

Vice-President’s Message

Welcome everyone to Rosedale Park for fixtures today. A massive thank you must go firstly to all the coaches, managers, players, volunteers, supporters , club staff and sponsors for all you do for the club. To my colleagues on the board , Thank you for the long hours and work you do and for the support you provide me. We are Albany and our brand is nothing without the work you all do , so Thank you to everyone associated with our club. On a saddened note we pay our respects to a past club member and coach in Stephen Gove. Govey as he was known to us all was a great inspiration to members of our club and we are truly honours to have had him in our colours and part of our club. To the Gove family our sincere condolences on his passing. Please everyone join us for a moment of silence as pay our respects to Govey. The main fixture today on field 1 we welcome Onehunga Mangere staff , players and supporters to the ‘Dale. Looking at where both clubs are sitting on the league this’ an important game for both who I'm sure will provide a great spectacle of football. Last league game out we failed to see the game thru despite looking comfortable and on track for the points and came away with nothing. So today must show our worth and strength and not only grab but see the win thru. To our Reserves , Thank you for all that you do for us. On field you are one of the top contenders for the league title so don't be satisfied and complacent because of where you are on your table. Keep pushing and keep fighting. Off field, the support and encouragement you provide us is noticed, seen and treasured. Thank you to you guys for always being there and supporting the club. I wish Ian, Chris, Junior, Gary, Bill & Mahmoud and the squad the best for today fixtures. To the rest of our fellow Seniors U19s, Africans, Athletic, Red United , Young Poles, Humble FC, Redmen, Champs, Brewers, North End, Watsons Heroes, Mad Dogs, DevilsRock United, Originals and Nortons, whether home or away I wish you success today. Welcome everyone to Rosedale. Have a great afternoon , enjoy the football on display and enjoy a relaxing time in the clubrooms after. Andy Turner Club Vice-President #COYR

A word from our Captain

Josh Anderson Reserve Team Captain

Ordinarily, this would be my opportunity to relive with you the events of our previous match; however, in light of the heartbreaking loss of Steve Gove earlier this week, it seems appropriate to share a few words from our Mike McMurtrie on behalf of the reserve team. ‘It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of an Albany United Legend today. When I first started playing reserve football many years ago, Steve Gove (Govey as he is better known) was in and around the First and Reserve team set up. I was pretty sure he was about 70 at the time but he never seemed to age. I never understood most of what he said except "Check" which meant to turn around and run the other way during warm up, which when it was first said confused the entire squad who subsequently ran into him as he had "Checked" and we hadn't. Govey wore the most horrendous of football shirts from all eras to training, and I remember on more than one occasion a purple blur running into nick the ball and score the jammiest of goals. When he left to Warkworth, I never looked forward to seeing him on the field as I knew I would be on the receiving end of his incredible talent. Govey was also always happy to have a chat and pass on his footballing knowledge, whether you wanted it or not. He will be greatly missed by all players, coaches, referees and supporters who had the pleasure of watching him play. I was one of the lucky ones who had the privilege to call him a teammate. Our thoughts go out to his family in this difficult time and we will always remember our friend Govey.’ I usually end the week’s column with a humorous quote related to football. This week, I was reminded of an old proverb I once heard: “Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names.” Rest in peace Govey, gone but never forgotten.

A word from our Captain

Jeremy Wilkinson First Team Captain

We had a tough land loss last weekend against ‘top of the table’ club Papakura City . The boys started well with great structured and patient play. As Papakura became frustrated with not being able to break us down and pushed more players forward it allowed us to create some solid attacks. Notably the keeper finger tips save to Peter Shaw’s effort and Andy Turner oneon-one but for being pulled back by the recovering Papakura defender . In at half time 0-0 it was just deserved with both team having equal opportunities but for keepers in both teams. There were high spirits in our changing room at half time and we were determined to take down top of the table and felt we had the formula to do it. Some key injuries however took turned that for us. We lost two defenders with Caleb suffering from concussion after competing for a header and shortly into the second Ben went down with a struggling hamstring. Another of the defenders, Louee struggling to walk with an injury but played on for the full 90min and two others in the team soldiering on. We were forced to change things which gave Papakura an opportunity which they took obligingly. Time to heal the wounded, back into training this week to prepare for this week. The team is excited and pumped o be playing back home for the next two games where we will be fighting for all six points. The boy’s commitment has not wavered during this tough middle section of the league, if anything it has made us hungrier and more determined. When we faced Onehunga Mangery at the start of the season and drew 1-1 we were still developing but have come a long way since then. We are eager to walk out on to the field today and show everyone how far we have come and what we are capable of. Boy’s you know the task at hand and need to ensure you play your part and provide your 100% today. Nothing else will do! As always thank you to the supporters who come along to our games and cheer for us week in and week out, our sponsors for the contribution in making us a success, the Reserves who push us constantly and have no hesitation in informing us and making sure we don’t slack off and the countless people behind the scenes who make Albany United a great club. Your work does not go unnoticed and is appreciated by the whole team. I hope everyone has an enjoyable afternoon of football.
