Real and Urgent

Do You Lack Rhythm? If so, that’s maybe why you might miss getting an article into the Sedgeberrow Post on time. We have to admit that the increased gap, caused by being bi-monthly, makes timing a little complicated for article and minute writers. It does though significantly reduce the pressure on the time commitment of the busy twenty two villagers who generously arrange the rhythm of their lives around dropping the Post onto your doormat.

You can get rhythm though! Please look at these 2017 copy deadlines: Now!

16th July. 10th September. 12th November. 6th January. Take the floor, swirl into action, plot and plan your meetings so that you are left with time to catch the Sedgeberrow Post. Pen your articles with an eye on those magic dates. Tell Mike you have work in progress! Treat dates as a route map beacon that you will arrive at early. Thanks.

Submitting Material For Publication Your Village Needs You

Have you any experiences you wish to share, a skill that could please our villagers? Do please us all by submitting articles, recording your events and most importantly, hitting our bi-monthly deadlines. If you are a local villager you will have a free choice of a double A5 page spread, a single A5 page, a half page and a quarter page. We can help you estimate how many words you will need for each size. Talk to Mike, who will help you sort out how much space you will need. (01386 881863)

The Sedge Warbler

The Farmer’s Friend Returns European or Western Polecat Mustela pustorius

Sedge Warbler pic. copyright of P&H Harris. www.kenyabirds.org.uk.

The Resurgent Polecat: It’s on the way back, but its friendliness depends on good husbandry being present and domestic fowls securely locked up at night. A nocturnal predator the polecats main food sources are rabbits and rats, dual partiality that should earn the praise of most country folk. They hunt the rabbits out in the fields and explore farm outbuildings and other structures for rats. I only found out about this remarkable resurgence when travelling home on the Brecon Road in Wales. Sadly it was because I passed an interesting road kill creature by the side of the road, thinking; “wow, was that a polecat?” I stopped to have a look and talk to a farmer in a nearby gateway. He had seen similar road kill before he said. The upshot was that he found me a large plastic bag to put it in. A quick call to the local Wildlife Trust and I was able to call in before their office closed and have confirmation that it was a pure polecat. They were very helpful and I left the office clutching a gift of two polecat distribution surveys undertaken for the Vincent Trust by Johnny Birks, whilst the body was kept for study. Polecats can be confused with wild ferrets and do inter breed. Features of a true polecat are: a dark or reddish brown nose, with a short white chin patch, blackish fur on top of feet and toes, and blackish hairs on hindquarters and tail. Polecats were heavily persecuted in the late 1800s and early 1900s, surviving mainly in Welsh strongholds. It is from those sanctuaries that the quiet and unobtrusive polecat has fortunately been able to spread unassisted into England, and now with Worcestershire sightings. A recent Worcestershire Wildlife Trust meeting which I attended featured a talk by Johnny Birks about his polecat research for the Vincent Wildlife Trust. In 2015 he published with Whittet Books Ltd, in The British Natural History Collection, his book POLECATS, illustrated by Antony Griffiths. Just what you need if you wish to know more. Thank you to Maureen

You will see from the Parish Council report on page 32 that Maureen Pratt has stood down from chairing the Parish Council. She did not seek re-election at the AGM, though remains a Parish Councillor, which given her vast experience of 37 years in that role and 22 in the Chair, members will certainly value. The whole meeting expressed their full appreciation of Maureen’s hard work and dedication to all Village matters over those years. The new elected Chairman Chris Devereaux-Little said “I would personally like to thank Maureen for her professionalism and tutelage over my years as a member of the Parish Council and look forward to her continued support.” Richard Hunt recalls Maureen’s great help to him as a new member 12 years ago, already with 20 odd years experience under her belt. “She was happy to pass on her vast experience” he said. “Together we visited a lot of playgrounds in the area after a playground safety course. She has continued to check the playground equipment on a regular basis and was very involved in the setting up of the new Jubilee playground. Her thorough approach is a continued asset.” Editor

Sedgeberrow Playgroup Sedgeberrow Playgroup is a small friendly group that has been running successfully for over 20 years. It has good facilities, resources and equipment. Above all it has enthusiastic and caring staff, who plan ways for each child to develop and learn in an atmosphere of warmth and fun. Children are given the opportunity to work and play on their own and co-operate with one another, and with the adults responsible for their care and education. The importance of the children learning through playing creatively and talking about their experiences is recognised, and all children have a chance to see and do fresh things every week, participating in varied activities with the support and guidance of the staff, developing and progressing at their own rate. The activities offered by Sedgeberrow Playgroup take due account of the interests, achievement and the developing physical, intellectual, emotional and social abilities of the children. A BIG THANK YOU Fun Quiz Night for Pancreatic Cancer Research - Last March 2017 What another brilliant and amazing quiz evening. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying the fun and helping us raise money. We cannot thank everyone enough for their help before, during and after the quiz; also for the generous donations and raffle prizes. Special mention for Judy, Jill and Elaine for their wonderful help. Also Joyce and Sue W-C for doing the raffle and score keeping. A special BIG BIG thank you to Brian and Wendy for setting up and doing the quiz – they had some brilliant questions and kept us entertained! They worked so hard to ensure we all had a thoroughly good night out. We all particularly enjoyed the sing-along for the last round. Congratulations to the winning team - Sue Morris, Sally Johnson and friends. General consensus was that the whole evening had that feel good factor - ‘a bit like the old times’ and a proper social event. The total for the evening (with donations) was an incredible £600 for the Pancreatic Cancer Research. We are overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. A heartfelt big thank you for your support.

We hope to organise another fun quiz next year. Sue, Andrew and William Beasley

Planet

Some Views of

Earth

Plastic Ahoy! Planet Earth is all at sea. Well not exactly. Plastic is. We happily chuck it out of our car windows - dump it into our ditches - shove it into landfill sites - spread its micro-beads into our beauty products - knowingly eat and drink from it’s non-recyclable products - toss it into our rivers, and whilst we fret about our children putting its bags over their heads, we gaily shed waste resources ad infinitum. Too much of it then enters our water courses. Its toxic flotsam fouls our shores, whilst out at sea its ageless bags are fatally mistaken for tasty jelly fish by the gentle sea turtle and found, too late, to be indigestible by doomed dolphins. Whale found dead with 30 plastic bags in its stomach. Daily Mail - Feb 2017

So next time you see a load of tat left in the gap at the end of the hedge on the left as you head out of Sedgeberrow to join the A46 on the way south, and you think to yourself “dirty vandals” then ask yourself this question. “How much of the goods I buy aren’t biodegradable and bound to end up in landfill or feed the vandalism of those who don’t care?” Editor

This helps us to keep up to date with local and national flood news and any changes that might affect us. At the last meeting we received a presentation from the Environment Agency (EA) and a demonstration of the new flooding website. This includes the current flood warning pages plus other useful links and can be found at https://www.gov.uk/ check-flood-risk The EA Flood Warning system has also changed affecting some of the Flood Warning Area names and Quickdial codes, so you may notice that these are slightly different to ones you have heard previously. If you are currently registered to receive flood warnings you don’t need to make any changes, but you might want to use the opportunity to login to your account to check it’s all up to date and explore the new features. New Homes Bonus Good news!! Sedgeberrow residents were successful in our recent bid to convert New Homes Bonus money into a Community Project. As a consequence we now have ÂŁ11,600 to spend on the 3 items we identified in our application to Wychavon.

The successful items are:

1. Improvements to Glebe Meadow play area - to include facilities for 5 aside football, adult gym kit and children's play equipment. 2. Provision of furniture for the Vestry Community Day room at St Mary the Virgin church. 3. Funds towards "traffic calming" through the village. Obviously ÂŁ11,600 will not cover all of the costs for improvements and equipment needed and we will be relying on volunteers to help take each aspect forward. To this end we have identified "Champions" for each and anyone who wants to be involved should contact any of the names below or myself.

The Champions are:

1. Glebe Meadow - Cheryl Pope (882403 ) and Colette Malin (881014) 2. Vestry upgrade - Roger Horton (881307) and Ivor Davies. 3. Traffic calming and village "beautification" - Judy Smith and Sue Beasley (881868). Other sources of funding are being applied for by the Village Hall Committee which owns Glebe Meadow and the PCC for the Church Vestry upgrade, but the NHB money will help us to kick start the projects and we would like as many residents to join in with us as possible. Many thanks to the Sedgeberrow residents, who turned out in good number to the Parish Open Assembly in March - those 42 votes that supported our NHB plan really helped to swing it with Wychavon!! News about the old £1 coin It’s being replaced for the first time in over thirty years, all because it is vulnerable to counterfeiting, costing the taxpayer and businesses money . In fact, around one in 30 coins that are currently in circulation are thought to be fake. It’s replacement claims to be ‘The most secure coin in the world’ as below: 12-sided – instantly recognisable, even by touch Bimetallic – the outer ring is gold coloured nickel-brass and the inner ring is a silver-coloured nickel-plated alloy Latent image – it has an image similar to a hologram, that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number ‘1’ when seen from different angles Micro-lettering – tiny lettering on the lower inside rim reads ‘one pound’ and ‘2017’ on each side. Milled edges – it has grooves on alternate sides An additional hidden high security feature is built into the coin. Key dates to be aware of: From 28th March until 15th October, both coins will be in circulation, but from 16th October, the old ‘round pound’ should no longer be used – or given to you as change. There is no “promise to pay the bearer” element here, unlike the £5 note, so make sure you have spent them all before the 16 th October. Editor

Sedgeberrow Women’s Institute It only seems like yesterday that I was writing the last report, yet here we are again. In March our speaker was Tim Porter who gave an interesting and informative talk on The Churches Along the Cotswold Escarpment. In April we had a demonstration/talk on the Art of Stained Glass and Glass Fusion. Classes in this are held in Offenham. Maybe some of our members would like to " have a go?" The scrabble afternoon was great fun, thank you Maureen for holding it at your house. The Book Club was held at Di's in April. Members of the W.I. Racing Club had a great day on Ladies Day at Cheltenham. Others went to the 'Open Day' and others will be attending the Racing Club Lunch in June. The Spring Group Meeting was held at Cheltenham Town Hall and the members who went spoke very highly of the afternoon speakers. Our speaker for May is Celia Hargrave who will tell us about her garden in Trench Hill. Her garden will be open to the public in June so maybe we can arrange a visit. The Coffee Morning in May was held at 22 Cheltenham Road and was well attended. Diane has arranged our Lunch Meeting for July 4th at The Pheasant in Toddington. (We are looking forward to that ). In June the garden party will be held at Ella's. The next Book Club meeting will be on Friday, 20th June at Liz's. The next coffee morning will be at Pam's on Monday, July 24th. On Wednesday, August 9th Ros and Maureen will be hosting a tea and scone/cake afternoon at their house. Proceeds to go to Marie Curie. As always you are welcome to come along and join us. We hope to see you at one of our meetings.

Help your rural community thrive through enterprise development Germinate Enterprise is a resource that churches or other groups can use to help their community flourish through job creation, retaining young and working age residents and tackling rural poverty. What is it all about? In most communities there are people who would love to set up their own small business or social enterprise, but lack confidence and the practical skills needed to choose an idea and work out whether it is viable. In February 2017 the Germinate Enterprise was recognised by Cinnamon Network. Achieving Cinnamon Recognised Project status, meant churches who wish set up the programme could qualify for funding of around £2000. The Prince’s Countryside Fund has enabled the Germinate programme to develop. Larry & Sam Larry Lobster and Sam Clam were best friends. They did everything together. The only difference between them is that Larry was the nicest Lobster ever and Sam, well lets just say he was not so good. Larry and Sam did so much together that they even died together. Larry went to heaven and Sam went to hell. Larry was doing well in heaven and one day St. Peter came up to him and said, "Larry, you know you are the nicest lobster we ever had up here. Everyone likes you but you seem to be a bit depressed. Tell me what is bothering you, maybe I can help." Larry said, "Well, don't get me wrong Pete, I like it up here and everything, but I really miss my good friend Sam Clam. We used to do everything together and I really miss him a lot." St. Peter looked at Larry with pity and said to him, "I tell you what, I can arrange it so that you can go down to hell tomorrow and visit Sam all day. How would that sound?" This made Larry very happy and he got up bright and early the next morning and grabbed his wings, his harp, and his halo and got in the elevator to hell. When the doors opened he was met by Sam. They hugged each other and they were off. You see in Hell Sam owned a disco. They spent the day there together and had a great time. At the end of the day Larry and Sam went back to the elevator together said their goodbyes and Larry got back in the elevator and went up to heaven. He stepped off the elevator and was greeted by St. Peter who blocked the doorway to heaven. He looked at Larry and said, "Larry Lobster, didn't you forget something?" Larry looked around and said, "No, I don't think so I have my halo and my wings." St. Peter looked at him and said, "Yes, but what about your harp?" Larry gasped and said........ "I Left My Harp in Sam Clam's Disco."

Do you want to reduce your carbon footprint? Get together with other people and support each other to do it? SeSaME has been offered the opportunity for individual villagers to attend interactive sessions that will explore ideas about what you could do to reduce your personal carbon footprint in the areas of home energy, waste, water, consumerism, food and transport. A chance to think about what makes carbon reduction hard for you and what you can gain from doing it. The opportunity to come up with plans and targets for reducing your carbon footprint. To join a group of like-minded people to work and have fun with. Sedgeberrow will be one of other communities hoping to take part, as a joint venture with local Quakers. Leicester Transition will provide the material and training for the local group facilitators in our village. To learn more contact Mike Parker – 01386 881863

Recipe: Cod and Chips Fresh cod fillets

Heat a frying pan with milk around half way up the pan, add a knob of butter.. When boiling, add the cod fillets. Poach gently, turning once, for 8-10 minutes depending on thickness of the fillets. Remove fillets and keep warm. Mix a little cornflour with a tablespoon of cold milk and add to remaining milk in pan. Add black pepper, salt and parsley. Bring gently to the boil stirring constantly and simmer for 1 minute until thickened.

Sweet potato chilli chips

Heat oven to 200' gas 6. Pour just enough vegetable or olive oil to cover the bottom of a baking tin, and heat this for 5 minutes in the oven. Peel the potatoes and cut into chunky chips. Add to hot pan and sprinkle with chilly flakes and salt, turning the chips over to coat them. Cook for 20 minutes, turn over to coat the chips, and return to the oven for 5 minutes. Scoop out with slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

Serve the Fish and Chilli Chips with salads or peas.

SEDGEBERROW PARISH COUNCIL Election of Chairman and Vice Chairman. Councillors Chris Devereaux-Little and Richard Hunt were respectively elected Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Sedgeberrow Parish Council. All Councillors gratefully thanked Maureen Pratt for her extensive contribution and dedication over the many years as Chairman of Sedgeberrow Parish Council. We all look forward to Maureen’s continued support as a Councillor and I would personally like to add my own thanks for her professionalism and tutelage during my years on the Parish Council. Highways Matters The safety element of HGVs and speeding through the village has been brought up in the New Home Bonus process: a. Winchcombe Road Resurfacing County Councillor Liz Eyre is to ask if the Winchcombe Road needs to be top dressed and/or whether the monies saved could be put towards traffic calming measures through the village. b. Traffic Flow The Parish Council, in conjunction with County Councillor Liz Eyre, are pursuing an understanding of the differences in recording by the WCC Highways Department and a local record of traffic flow. c. Bollards The bollards in Winchcombe Road have now been replaced. d. Cheltenham Road / Winchcombe Road Speeding This is being investigated further as part of the traffic flow works. e. Vehicle Activated Speed Sensor An operator has now been found for the pole mounted Vehicular Activated Speed Sign. This operation will now be carried out by Mike Parker, with any remittance passed to SeSaME. Liz Eyre, your County Councillor, is looking into the possibility of modifying the Pole Heights to make it easier to move the device. Drainage A survey and map of drains within the village has been compiled by Councillor Richard Hunt and provided to WCC to arrange jetting. Rights of Way All concerns regarding public footpaths, particularly across fields, should be addressed to the Countryside Officer (Dave Jones) at Worcestershire County Council.

Police Report Julie Pardoe, our local Community Support Officer with Pershore Rural North & South Safer Neigbourhood Team, has informed the Parish Council that they do not have any incidents to report for the village during the last few months. With the advent of Summer and hopefully better weather they would like to remind residents to ensure all garden equipment is tidied away and secured and that all windows and doors are closed and locked when leaving their property, even for a short period of time. Any particular queries or issues you may have to report to the Police please do so by telephoning 101 or 999 as appropriate. 2009 Sedgeberrow Parish Plan During 2008 & 2009 an extensive exercise was undertaken by Sedgeberrow Parish Councillors, members of the Sedgeberrow Community Group, Village Hall Committee members, members of the Parish Church and many interested villagers, to assemble information and publish the “Sedgeberrow 2009 Vision for the Future Parish Plan”. This document was raised during the meeting and the Parish Council intends to further review it to understand what has been achieved so far and where to focus our priorities in the future. The Parish Council would be interested in hearing from representatives of the above listed groups and any villagers that may have taken up residence since this publication in 2009. Please either contact me directly or through the Parish Clerk. Parish Games Joining Forms are currently available for those interested in taking part in the forthcoming Parish Games. We already have competitors for some of the events and are looking for more. If anyone is interested in taking part or organising the Sedgeberrow competitors events please let me know, or advise the Clerk of their interest. Chris Devereaux-Little – Chairman.
