A Plea from Mike Thank you for your news, stories and events. The Sedgeberrow Post would never stay firmly in the ground without them.

Please look at these copy deadlines for 2018 : Now!

18th March. 13th May. 15th July. 16th Sept.

Put them in your diary. Don’t wait, do it now! Then make a note for a few days before. Remind yourself to drop Mike an email telling him that you have the job in hand, whether big or small, and are planning to send your copy as early as possible. That way the really unavoidably late entries are so much easier to find a slot for. Those deadlines give us just 18 hours to the first proof print. and I’m asleep for 7 of them. Please heed my plea by keeping me informed. Editor Mike

Dismantling Winchcombe Scout Hut in 1984

If you ask the question I believe that you will find many of us in the village are keen recyclers. If you knew more you might refer to me as a recycling nerd, and that would please. Some of you might say: “is it worth it” or “there are things too difficult to recycle.” This picture tells another story. It shows a 40ft by 25ft wooden Scout hut in Winchcombe being dismantled, ready to be recycled on to the relatively new Four Pools housing estate in Evesham. Could it be done and was it worth it? It could and it was, as you can read now. In 1983 the newly formed Evesham Adventure Playground Association had organised an Easter Playscheme in the grounds and premises of the Evesham High School. 24 local Volunteers, 8 Quaker volunteer work campers and well over 200 children made it a worthwhile and great success.. This success led to Wychavon District Council leasing them a plot of land for a permanent site for the Association. Two important criteria were that they should fence the land and have a building that could provide a wet weather area. In 1984 a combined Quaker/IVS six week, voluntary work camp was organised to build a fence, dismantle the hut in Winchcombe, transport it to and recycle it at the new site in the Four Pools. Was it worth it and was the difficulty arranging all that recycling too much? Definitely not. You can visit the Adventure Playground now, take your own children during the school holidays, talk to Dave and the playleaders, and admire the permanent brick building that has replaced the old wooden one, where I am pictured happily at the front organising probably the biggest and best recycling job that I have ever had a hand in. Welcome Initiative Coming to Sedgeberrow Village in March See below: Editor

Rural Communities Programme (RCP) is an initiative run by Wychavon District Council which engages with rural communities, ensuring that services are provided and taken up in the most effective way. Through the project the council is working with communities to understand how issues such as rural isolation and poverty impact on local communities and supporting them to tackle issues such as these. The aims of the Rural Communities Programme are: To support vulnerable individuals and communities in rural South Worcestershire including older people and the socially isolated. To implement a model for strong rural communities by developing existing networks. To focus on building community capacity, thereby enabling professionals to refer into community groups. To maximise uptake and impact of existing public, voluntary and community services in rural areas whilst not increasing reliance on them. The project is delivered with partners from the Fire Service, Age UK and Housing providers to name but a few, taking services into people’s homes and making sure they have everything they need to remain independent within their communities. So far we, with the help of our partners, have made hundreds of referrals to services, passed on information and advice leaflets and identified many new community volunteers. We are now planning the next set of door knocks and are looking forward to visiting some properties in Sedgeberrow on the morning of 28th March - look out for a postcard coming through your door! If you would like any information about the Rural Communities Programme please contact Tracy Perkins (tracy.perkins@wychavon.gov.uk) or take a look at the website www.wychavon.gov.uk/rural Well Established FACT

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said. “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self- pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his old grandfather. “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied. “The one you feed” Courtesy of Barbara Petri SeSaME Says: are you interested in how we deliver and save energy in a rural community? Smiling by Spike Milligan

Smiling is infectious You catch it like the flu When someone smiled at me today I started smiling too I walked around the corner And someone saw me grin When he smiled I realised I had passed it on to him

I thought about the smile And then realised its worth A single smile like mine Could travel around the earth So if you feel a smile begin Don’t leave it undetected Start an epidemic And get the world infected

Craftiness at the Queen’s Head

For the past few years the village craft group have met on a Wednesday evening in the pub. Over the year the group have created many items. Added to this, they received a donation of giftware from a local business. With all this stuff cluttering their houses, they decided to have a Craft Fayre to raise money for Glebe Meadow. On 9th December Siobhan and Ian (Landlord and Landlady of the Queen’s Head) hosted the event. There were goods galore ranging from hand knitted items to decorations and the best tombola ever seen. Coffee and mince pies gave the festive feel, as did the mulled wine. Those who attended bagged some brilliant bargains and last-minute presents. The event raised a massive £600 which will be donated to the Glebe Meadow restoration project. Thanks have to go to all the members of the Village Craft Group (they are known as Stitch and Bitch really). Thanks to Ian and Siobhan for hosting and thanks to all who came and spent money in a good cause. With this success, we will definitely consider doing another later this year. If you are interested in crafts, come along to our friendly, informal group. We meet in the Queen’s Head on Wednesday evenings throughout the year. Sedgeberrow Stitch and Craft group

Anyone for tea? Well actually yes. A Tea

Party has started to become a bit of a tradition in the village over recent years. They have usually taken place in the summer, but this year it took place at the end of November and started the festive celebrations. Around 50 people enjoyed copious amounts of tea, fine sandwiches and cake. This was all followed by a Christmas themed quiz and a game of fun bingo. It was great to see so many villagers together clearly enjoying each other’s company, with chatter and laughter all round. The event raised £250 which has been split equally between the church and the village hall. This fantastic amount was only made possible due to the generosity of some local businesses including Marks & Spencer (Evesham), Tesco (Evesham), Morrison’s (Evesham), COOP (Evesham) and B&M (Evesham) who donated items for the event. The villagers who made sandwiches and cakes, of which there were loads. The people who donated raffle prizes and of course those who attended and helped on the day. SEDGEBERROW FLOOD GROUP www.sedgeberrow.com Flood Warden - Richard Hunt 01386 882079 Secretary – Annette.dawson@btinternet.com

We start 2018 with high hopes for the future along the River with the work of the Isbourne Catchment Group. Those of you who attended our open meeting back in November will be aware we are waiting for the appointment of a local project officer to kick start Natural Flood Management interventions across the catchment this year. However, we are mindful that the Environment Agency issued a Flood Alert on Christmas Eve for our area so we must still remain prepared. Luckily for us it didn’t materialise but we would like to issue a general reminder to all villagers. Please sign up for Flood Warnings by calling the Floodline on 0345 988 1188 using quick dial code: 209021 or registering on the warning website available at https://www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings. Don’t forget you can also register to receive the Flood warning - all clear message, which means you will be informed when no further flooding is expected. Following on from this, Flood Group members are revisiting those of you who volunteered to help us in the event of a flood to make sure you are still able to assist, and that we have your up to date contact details. For those of you new to the village or not previously registered who would also like to support us, we are looking for assistance in the following areas: 1. Help moving furniture 2. Help to install flood gates 3. First aid 4. Providing overnight accommodation 5. Providing meals 6. Access to 4x4 vehicles 7. Drive or space to park cars 8. Help at the village hall (making tea/coffee, help with administration etc.) Should we need to help any property likely to be affected before or during a flood event we would give you a call and ask you to support us with these activities where possible. Please get in touch with our Flood Warden Richard Hunt on 882079 or the Flood Secretary Annette Dawson at annettedawson@btinternet.com to talk through in more detail and register with us. Thank you for your continued support. Richard Hunt. Flood Warden. 01386 882079.

Some Views of

Earth

As seen by Children from St Egwins Middle School Eco Committee These 13 Pupils from years 6,7 & 8, dedicated and already active about all aspects of environmental issues, walked from the School to the Market Square in Evesham to support the launch by Transition Evesham Vale of their New Year Campaign. You can read below the banner what they said.

Each year it is estimated over 100,000 marine mammals die from ingesting plastic. We have collected and produced this turtle sculpture, ‘Wins’ in a short space of time. It was shocking how easy it was to collect so much plastic waste. The waste is mostly single use plastic bottles, all from just one school. We called the turtle ‘Wins’ after “St Egwins”. We are “Wins” showing the positive use of art to highlight an environmental issue. A healthy earth needs healthy oceans. 38.5 million single use plastic bottles are used per day in the UK but only 19.5 million get recycled. It is all our responsibility to address this issue. We ALL need to GET DRASTIC WITH PLASTIC! A Massive Change of 18

SEDGEBERROW C.E. FIRST SCHOOL “Reach for the stars Happy New Year from staff and pupils of Sedgeberrow CE First School. Sedgeberrow School Governing Body have agreed that with effect from the start of this term Mr Croke will, in addition to remaining Head Teacher at Sedgeberrow C of E First School, also assume the position of Executive Head Teacher at Elmley Castle C of E First School. The Governing Bodies of both schools, the Diocese Education Department and Worcestershire Education Authority have all agreed to and fully support this move. This will be a temporary, local offer of support from Sedgeberrow as an outstanding school to Elmley Castle. Mr. Croke is looking forward to the challenge that this new role will bring but promises to still be a regular feature at the Sedgeberrow School gate. The school value that the children are exploring this term is 'Love' - in all its many forms. They will be discussing what it means and how we all evidence it through our deeds and actions. We will welcome back to the school a representative from the charity 'Have a Heart for Kibera' and learn about helping those less fortunate. The community living in Kenya manufacture small soapstone hearts we can buy to celebrate Valentine's Day. Each heart sold enables the charity to feed an orphan in the slum area of Kibera three hot meals. Contd Over

Please take a look at our school website which has recently undergone a facelift - www.sedgeberrow.worcs.sch.uk. We hope you like the new look! There are lots of photos of the school in action and the website also contains lots of information and links to the class blogs. In late January, work will start on improvements to our existing playground equipment. We are looking forward to a new rock and roll log beam, stepping stones and a pirate ship. It is hoped that later in the term new surfacing, to include colourful wet pour safety surfacing and artificial grass to the Reception and Year 1 classes outdoor areas, will give a muchneeded boost to the aesthetics and functionality of these spaces. So all in all a very positive start to 2018 with lots more to look forward to. Danielle Eames. School Business Manager

Sedgeberrow Women’s Institute A Happy New Year to everyone - a rather belated one as by the time you read this report, January will be over and Easter eggs will already be appearing on supermarket shelves. First of all though a quick reminder of what we did in December. The Christmas in Cheltenham was a great success as was our Christmas dinner at Dumbleton. Unfortunately our December meeting had to be cancelled due to an unexpected fall of snow and the school was closed. Jacky's coffee morning went ahead as usual. Now we are starting a new year. Our January meetings will have included a talk by Nicholas Clark on " Spring in Texas " and a talk by Michael Portillo at Cheltenham Town Hall, a Scrabble afternoon and a Book Club meeting. In February we are looking forward to a talk on the History of the Abbeyfield Society and in March, a talk on Making a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. The G.F.W.I. Annual Council Meeting will be held in March at the Town Hall in Cheltenham when Adam Henson will be the guest speaker. Sedgeberrow Sustainable & Manageable Energy Report to Parish Council Rural Advisory Panel I have attended two Meetings related to the Rural Communities & Economy Advisory Panel. One was an invite to the Town Advisory Panel for a presentation on EU funding from officers from Worcestershire County Council, and an update from Wychavon’s Skills Officer. I am finding it a two way process, enabling me to learn much information for helping SeSaME contribute to both the more general and energy side of a Village Plan. Village Energy The sudden cold spell served to highlight the importance of rural communities with “off mains gas” getting better control of their energy sources. On November 17th Calor Gas were offering the large 47K LPG Cylinder for £85, reduced to £78.68 if you said that was rather a lot and that you had an account. Countrywide offered the same cylinder for £51.45 – the same as last year. So, if you are elderly, hate all the button pressing when you ring round suppliers, and find that the Calor driver looks after you, is friendly and helpful, you are very likely to be paying £33.55 more than you need to for your gas cylinder. Incidentally the Countrywide driver is also friendly and helpful. Group effort in cold conditions really comes into its own, even though the snow led to some delay in delivery time for the Oil Buying Club. That’s perfectly ok if you do what you are meant to and re-order when you still have at least a good months supply. Christmas is a killer if you miss-time it. The Club paid 43.70 ppl + vat for a delivery (£229.45 for 500 litres) starting Monday 4 th December. A Club member who missed the order date, and couldn’t wait till the next January Club order, paid 51.00 ppl + vat on the 30th December. Another customer, and haven’t we all done it, forgot completely. They ended up with an empty tank. Their 500 litre delivery on Christmas Eve morning cost £450. They reported that though this sounds extortionate, others were charging £300 £900 for a call out charge alone, without the fuel! The member also needed to call out an engineer, to re-start the boiler. All this is just about oil and gas and a small percentage of village energy use. Unfortunately LPG fuel does not lend itself easily to communal buying. Deep down we all know that those two fossil fuels for heating will have to go sometime but it will be a long winded and painful process. Contd Over

Meanwhile as a Rural Community we could explore how we can establish control over the future heat sources that will be installed in new houses built in our community. (See “SeSaME Says” on page 7) There are also some interesting new systems being developed that can help a community maximise efficient electricity usage. They need serious thought. Mike Parker. Recipe: Paprika-Spiced Mince with Cheesy Polenta Method Dry fry the minced beef in a large pan with the onion for about 5 minutes, until the mince is browned and the onion is becoming tender. Add the celery, pepper, garlic and chorizo sausage, and fry for a further 5 minutes to soften the vegetables. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato purĂŠe, oregano, cumin and paprika and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the polenta as directed on the pack, adding plenty of boiling water to give a soft, creamy, quite wet mash. SEDGEBERROW PARISH COUNCIL Parish Council report

The PC meeting took place on 8 January attended by the Chairman, the clerk and 4 councillors. Mr Andy Thomas had sent his apologies and these were accepted. Other attendees included David Manning from Wychavon who described a new initiative as part of the Rural Communities Programme which aims to look at services to help the elderly and the isolated. They plan a village survey, coordinated by Wychavon, possibly in late March. We will ensure that it ties in with the results of the recent online and door to door surveys being conducted by parishioners that are linked to the requirements for a Community Shop/dayroom. Planning a. Councillors discussed the upcoming Wychavon Planning Committee deliberations about the 20 house development, known as 49b Main St. Mrs Sue Morris will represent the village to highlight our concerns about planned street lighting and the need for surface water attenuation. Post meeting note - on 11 January Wychavon acknowledged our concerns about both matters and have removed street lighting from the plans and will re-evaluate the need for onsite water attenuation. b. Borough Councillor George Mackison has so far been unable to discover any planning details that would have prevented the destruction of hedgerow on the development at the far south end of Winchcombe Rd. Mr John De Paris will enquire further with local landowner and the council will continue to pursue this. The grass cutting contract has been awarded to Mr Martin Woodhouse this work begins March 2018. The council has been informed that Mr Phil Croke, Head teacher from Sedgeberrow School, is to assume additional temporary duties as the Executive HT of Elmley Castle First school. Contd Over

Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about it. Surely we have a responsibility to care for our blue planet. The future of humanity, and indeed all life on Earth, now depends on us."
