The End of an Era - the Final Post I have spent the last two months struggling, though managing to overcome, a range of ailments needing visits to the Doctor and some lifestyle changes. Having recently hit the big 80 I have decided it would be sensible to pass on the task of seeking, collating and writing up Sedgeberrow news to one of our younger residents, whilst I’m still in reasonable fettle. It’s a good time to make the change and put the Post to rest. All advertising contracts have ended, no one will need reimbursing. February to March are hardly hotspots of village activity so there is room for some slippage for the next news vehicle. In my time we have had the Sedgeberrow Scene, the Grapevine, the Sedgeberrow Post, all different in their own way. Now we can welcome another new era. Writing the Post has been fun. I shall miss it and working with the splendid SeSaME team who made it possible. I shall continue with all my other village activities where the deadlines are much less demanding and will be able to support whoever launches their own take on the news, whatever format it follows. You can contact Mike on 01386 881863 for help linking the new village magazine with past sources of help & support. Sedgeberrow Post is available online. A Paean to all Sedgeberrowites The Sedge Warbler

It was strangely welcoming in 1972 to be teased by a friendly villager after our arrival in Sedgeberrow to be told, “ you will need to have bin in the village for 50 years before you can call yourself a true Sedgeberrowite.” 46 years on and I am nearly there. As a Preston Lancastrian with a penchant for pie and mushy peas I sadly never believed my transition to that hallowed state could be fully complete. But here is my praise anyhow of the village community spirit that somehow still exists to make this village tick in an increasingly mobile and global world. There may be fewer villagers with school memories of each other and more daily commuters - outsiders - to foreign parts away down the road, but I believe the will to belong is still strong amongst them all. We have the long established Parish Council, Church and WI, with the village school and local farmers, all from way back. Urgent need has spawned new blood to nurture our Flood Group and our ground-braking, cross-county, Isbourne Catchment Group (ICG). SeSaME joining the country wide response to reducing energy usage and promoting renewable energy, is focussing on the intricacies of high carbon rural energy usage. The Sedgeberrow Post team, drafts, proof reads, prints and delivers almost 400 copies to every residence. Meanwhile the we unite every month in SeSaME oil buying group, earning an annual dividend, enough to cover some of its costs and that of nearby villages. We are active in the Parish Games. There are four websites and a social media link that villagers maintain. The local pub is a key lynchpin for celebrations and leisure while villagers like “Stitch & Craft” work hard to see that venue and the Village Hall continuing to serve. Loss of both the Top & Bottom shops continue to be mourned and a group of volunteers are beavering away to re-establish a Community Hub/Shop. The school and others can visit a splendid new classroom at Sandfield Farm, with youngsters able to experience farm life, pond dipping and a variety of woodland activities. There are new, very different challenges to village life that we are all facing. We, that’s all villagers, now need to draft and agree a new Neighbourhood Plan to help our local community influence the planning of the area in which we live and work - to develop a shared vision for our neighbourhood - choose where new homes, shops, offices and other development should be built - identify and protect important local green spaces - and influence what new buildings should look like. So do watch out for news of what’s needed, offer both your views and help in areas you can contribute to. We are all now Sedgeberrowites Sedge Warbler

Parish Games Dec.Jan 2018.19 Sedgeberrow has done very well in this the year of the 40th Anniversary Games. Women’s Darts Team

We have scored at least 103 points which must place us a good way up the table, but our position will not be revealed until 22nd November at the prize giving ceremony at Bretforten.

What has been so encouraging has been the rising enthusiasm from the village - 2018 has seen participation by more than 40 villagers - ages ranging from teens to folk in their 70s and drawn from all corners of the village. We have been so delighted by how well things have gone and much thanks goes to the various team Captains - Ben Harrison, Dan Clements, Emma Lowe, Martin Woodhouse, Jacky Cook, Matt Hartwell, Sue Beasley for their motivation and inspiration. We plan to hold a celebration night in the pub in the New Year - and will ensure that all get to know about it. Have a good Christmas all. Rick Hartwell/ Sue Morris

Christmas Fayre After the success of last year’s Christmas Fayre, the Sedgeberrow Craft Group (that’s their official title) decided they would do it again. There was a major panic the week before the event when it was announced that the Landlord and Landlady were leaving the pub and it may close. On Tuesday before the event, the pub was taken over by a new landlord - step in ‘Super Matt’. With only four days’ notice, he agreed to host it as planned and he did a fabulous job of it too. Thank you Matt, you really were a star.

The event was as great a success as last year. We are not completely sure of the final figure raised but we are confident we have exceeded last year’s total. We had a super raffle with some great prizes including a meal for two at the Queen’s Head. There was a massive tombola and many brilliant present and card ideas. There was also an opportunity for people to sit and chat over a cuppa and a homemade mince pie. Thanks has to go to all the members of the Craft Group who all contributed to make the morning a great success. Also, thanks to all those who came and bought the items, you are the ones who make it a real success. Suzette Loomes & Colette Malin (Sedgeberrow Craft Group). With a current membership of 262 the club is able to offer suppliers a good sized order worth coming out for at a discounted price. Prices are on the rise at the moment but the Club knows that, on the day, members will get the best price available. Villages also benefit from a reduction in the numbers of heavy diesel vehicles pounding their narrow streets. At this time of year it’s the Clubs pleasure to distribute dividend cheques to local community organisations, funded by the 0.50pplitre levy on every litre distributed, and calculated on each village’s order amounts for the year. The amounts are listed as follows - Ashton under Hill – The Social Centre £164. Aston Somerville – The Village Hall £53. Beckford – The Nature Reserve £140. Childswickham – The Memorial Hall £5. Dumbleton – The Village Club £94. Elmley Castle – Friends of Elmley Castle Church £99. Hinton – The Parochial Church Council £34. Kemerton – The Conservation Trust £22. Overbury & Conderton – Overbury Village Hall £227. The Sedgeberrow Post - £618. Wormington – the Village Society £12. A total of £1529, not bad for the simple effort of villagers working together for both their own benefit and their community. There could be more to come if members spread the word in their villages. The Sedgeberrow dividend represents a good 50% of the annual printing costs of the bi-monthly Sedgeberrow Post. The remainder comes from advertising which can be unpredictable. The Neighbourhood Plan. SeSaME welcomed being able to attend an inaugural meeting of the Neighbourhood Plan on 31st October 2018 and looks forward to working in an enthusiastic community group supported by the Parish Council, and is keen to present for the councils approval a sustainable and effective plan. A Plan that reflects and embraces the fully explored ideas generated and driven by villagers agreeing it as the best way forward after overseeing the whole process. Active Travel Group SeSaME chair Mike Parker has been invited onto, and so far attended, two meetings of the Wychavon District Council Active Travel Group. The Active Travel Groups Terms of Reference are to explore measures which: Reduce the number of short journeys by car. Reduce traffic congestion and pollution Promote Health and Wellbeing Promote all forms of sustainable travel, including cycling, walking, rail and electric cars and bikes. Apart from raising the issue of barriers, to healthy cycling and walking, created by air pollution from vehicle emissions in town centres, Mike has raised the challenge presented by finding the scope to improve the cycle route from Evesham to Sedgeberrow, on to Ashton under Hill and beyond. Thus extending the easier availability of a wide range of relatively quiet country roads. Mike Parker. Chair. Sedgeberrow Sustainable and Manageable Energy

SEDGEBERROW C.E. FIRST SCHOOL “Reach for the stars In November, the school community has spent a great deal of time and thought commemorating the 100-year centenary of the end of World War One. During lessons and assemblies, the children learnt of the massive sacrifices made by that generation.

We held a special Remembrance Service with the help of members of The British Legion and the children made a poppy display at school using recycled plastic bottles. Our older children also went to the War Memorial in the village to lay their poppy pebbles which they had painted and spent some time in the church, reciting prayers and poems which they had written. On Tuesday 13th November, we celebrated World Kindness Day. We asked our parents to let us know all the kind acts that their children had participated in and we shared those as well as encouraging acts of kindness throughout the school. It was a truly uplifting day for everyone and made us all realise the power of positivity and extent of generosity in our community. Our annual talent show for Children in Need took place on Wednesday 14th November and we were once again amazed by the incredible variety of skills and flair, as well as tremendous confidence that our pupils displayed. A big well done to everyone involved! A reminder that if you have a child due to start school in September 2019, the application deadline is 15th January. Sedgeberrow Women’s Institute Ho Ho Ho. No it is not Father Christmas, just me getting to grips with the report. There is so much to tell you about what we have been doing and what we shall be doling in the next few weeks. In November Ros and Maureen held a sale in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. Tuesday 27th November Jenny arranged a trip to Tyntefield - a National Trust house. Now for December - On Saturday December 1st. there will be a birthday tea in the village hall to celebrate Ella’s 90th birthday. We also need to celebrate Liz and Pam’s 65th birthdays. Friday 7th December the ‘Book Club’ will be held at Helens and several of our members will be going to the Christmas Concert in Cheltenham Town Hall. On Monday 17th December our coffee morning will be at Jacky’s house, on Tuesday 18th December we shall be having our Christmas dinner at Dumbleton Hall. January- Our speaker for January will be Chris O’Grady who will tell us about ‘Fakes and Fortunes’. Gosh, I can hardly believe that all this has taken place, or is about to take place. I suppose like me you are very busy and I expect like me you are wondering how you are going to fit it all in? but I am sure that everything will turn out fine! and with that in mind I would like to wish all our members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year Ella Hardman 01386 881088

Village Tea Party The village tea party, which seems to be set in village tradition now, took place at the end of September. As usual it was a highly successful event bringing together villagers for a natter over a cuppa and some lovely food. There was enough food to feed an army, all prepared by village volunteers. It really is fantastic to see what can be achieved when the community spirit kicks in. The afternoon flashed by as well as lots of natter. There was bingo and a table top quiz and a mega raffle. The bingo was not as rowdy as last year, largely due to the absence of one particular table who were attending the editor’s special birthday. The quiz however brought out the bad side of some villagers. I’m sorry to have to report that there was cheating on a grand scale. One table (they can’t be named for legal reasons) were caught using GOOGLE. Will the village ever be the same again? The whole event was brilliant and raised £500 which has been split between the church and the Village Hall. This amount of money would not have been possible without the help of villagers and the generosity of local businesses who, through their donations, allow us to keep the entry fee low. Local supermarkets donated some of the food supplies. This year there were some really terrific raffle prizes, including an afternoon tea for two at The Fish in Broadway and wine tasting at Majestic Wines for 10 people. All this took a lot of organisation and work. The list of people is too long to mention everyone, but to all who made sandwiches, cakes, served on tables or came along on the day, thank you. An Introduction and Welcome to Matthew Mendoza-Ayers Matthew has been a chef/restaurateur for the past 18 years. He grew up in Cornwall and trained in Michelin and rosette restaurants. travelling Europe whilst working in highend restaurants. He won and held two rosettes for three years at the Castle Inn at Edgehill. Luckily his training within the hospitality trade was at a high level and he will be putting that to good use at the Queens Head. We saw that when he jumped to and hosted the Christmas Fayre at short notice. Not only was he still grappling with a strange venue, but earned praise all round. He has featured in various magazines and I believe has a well-known name throughout the Cotswolds for his expertise and good food. His ambition and willingness to succeed should produce good results in Sedgeberrow, given the importance that villagers attach to supporting their local pub. He will be working hard to ensure his back of house and front of house organisation leads to fully satisfied customers. I managed to speak to Matthew amidst his hectic move onto the premises and he is is keen to use his expertise and hard proven capabilities to produce a well-run and profitable enterprise that serves the community well. Best wishes to Matthew - Editor

Some Views of

Planet Earth

Are you proud of our current achievements in responding to climate change? Our village has benefitted from Local Authorities help, both County and District, in our efforts to combat climate change. We are proud of that. Nation wide efforts however reveal reality I’m not always proud of. Let's use future months to look at Westminster’s recent record on the environment, as listed below. Climate Change merging into the newly formed Department of Business Energy & Industrial Strategy Dept has sidelined its status, depriving it of a stand-alone department’s political clout. Climate Change consensus is absent at Westminster, restricting Co2 reduction strategies to party political precariousness. The Zero Carbon homes policy scrapped in 2016. New-build houses are less carbon friendly now, with heat loss and home generated electricity reduced. Rejecting low running costs a significant loss for new housing in off-gas rural communities like ours. Green Deal funding has ended. Upgrading old rural housing stock insulation has reduced. Inconsistent, and once "unlawful," changes to solar panel subsidies has lead to reduced take up and solar business closures locally since 2016. Fossil fuel drilling, vigorously imposed, ignores local and valid environmental objections. The £1.3bn Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project inexplicably cancelled as “not value for money.” Rejected onshore wind is a loss to local renewable energy strategies. Hinkley Point nuclear power station commissioned, despite needing a £30 billion subsidy and considered a “high cost and risky deal” by the head of the National Audit Office (NAO). The annual £2 billion state subsidy to clean up Britain’s historic nuclear sites increased. Building new nuclear power plants will increase decommissioning costs for centuries to come. The extra runway at Heathrow increases Carbon Footprints by about 250,000 yearly flights. Railway electrification between Cardiff and Swansea cancelled. Electric Vehicle charging points not yet standardized, and given slow nationwide development. No comprehensive legislation on a national recycling policy for plastic quality and returnable bottles, single use plastic or wet wipes. We have tasted nature’s unbridled power this summer, exacerbated by climate change. You might be forgiven for thinking “could do better!” We shall see what you think, as I explore these points with more detail in future Posts. Editor

Police Report. Dec. Jan 2108 We are encouraging all residents to review their home and garden security as a priority as we are receiving reports of a number of sheds and outbuildings being broken into and a number of burglaries have already been reported in the surrounding area. For further advice please visit www.westmercia.police.uk Also in the last week we have received reports of a scam call from HMRC or Pensions Department telling the caller that there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller is then demanding personal details.. Please share amongst the local residents especially the elderly who appear to be the main victims of these calls. The Tax Office will never contact you by phone and no company should ever contact you requesting your personal details. If anyone receives a call like this they should hang up without engaging with the caller, then after checking they have a dial tone call 101 and report it. SEDGEBERROW COMMUNITY HUB/SHOP UPDATE NOVEMBER 2018

During the January 10th 2018 Ordinary Parish Council Meeting the council commissioned a working group to look into the provision of a Community Hub/Shop within Sedgeberrow. This group, led by the Parish Council, was assisted by resident volunteers to support and help deliver the necessary stages to inform the currently proposed solution. An indicative proposal was initially put to Villagers at the March 2018 Annual Assembly and received majority support from all attending villagers with comments for additional consideration and a request to develop the scheme further. Through out the intervening months residents’ comments, necessary minor alterations and supporting statements were incorporated into the proposal to enable its progression through to the current formal Planning Application. At the Ordinary meeting of the Parish Council on Wednesday September 12 th 2018 the Council were made aware of the current status of the proposals and agreed to fund the necessary Planning Application fee. Unfortunately, due to Parish Council Protocol, the release of this fee was delayed until the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday November 14th 2018. All Planning Application documents were submitted to Wychavon late in September 2018, with the exception of the necessary Planning Fee. There may still be changes required by Wychavon as our application goes through the Planning Process and these will be addressed as the arise. The Parish Council are currently making arrangements for a presentation of the Planning Proposals to villagers. Contd Over The Great Barrier Reef 36 is Dying Now
