A Plea from Mike Thank you for your news, stories and events. The Sedgeberrow Post would never stay firmly in the ground without them.

Please look at these copy deadlines for 2018 : Now!

15th July. 16th Sept. 18th November. 13th January

Put them in your diary. Don’t wait, do it now! Then make a note for a few days before. Remind yourself to drop Mike an email telling him that you have the job in hand, whether big or small, and are planning to send your copy as early as possible. That way the really unavoidably late entries are so much easier to find a slot for. Those deadlines give us just 18 hours to the first proof print. and I’m asleep for 7 of them. Please heed my plea by keeping me informed. Editor Mike

The Sedge Warbler

A blot on the landscape

It seems that having roads straddling our countryside can always be considered a good idea. I can remember my own delight at trying out the

first full length motorway at Preston in 1959, the week it opened. Though I was also bored at the top speed of my old Austin. Travel over Hill and Dale will have begun with walking, then riding our horses as distances travelled became greater. It became more serious as we began steaming through the hills on iron tracks. We lost wonder then at the straightness of the Roman’s roads. It wasn’t long before the mass produced personal vehicle, beloved of the independent traveller, added its wider tracks to the Hill, Dale and Tree bashing that it’s wide tarmac required. It did seem at the time, with the flexibility it gave the traveller, all this work was considered by most of us to be worth its environmental impact. We might have thought differently at the start, had we been told what was coming - a coverage now of about 246 thousand miles of the countryside. With my fond teenage memories, enjoying an unspoiled meadow called paradise in Lancashire to fish from, I would certainly have wished restraint had I known. I would scramble the meadow’s slopes enjoying the lyrical calls of the then ubiquitous curlew - wondering at the screams from large lapwing flocks, their exuberantly whirling and rolling wings flashing white above my head. Almost gone now! You would think the idea to upgrade the previous failed bypass, now a gridlocked “slow pass” at peak times, would raise more concern on environmental grounds. The plans for a new fast twin lane highway between the junction 9 of the M5 motorway and north of Evesham can’t avoid blotting out more swathes of fertile countryside. We shouldn’t need a crystal ball to see that a policy of expanded road building, to accommodate bigger long distance lorries and individual car drivers, is not the ideal path to take as the planet’s warmth continues to rise. Don’t take my word for it. Look about you.

County Matters Sedgeberrow– A report from Cllr Liz Eyre Well residents, as a resident myself I am now successfully signed up for West Mercia Police's Community Messaging Service (CMS) - for the area in which I live. It was not hard. I accessed West Mercia's Website. I clicked on Jobs and Opportunities - that was a bit odd but I expect access to messages about crimes in my area is an opportunity! This led me to a simple process to sign up to CMS. I chose community messages, not rural, as a start - I am not sure I need to see all messages about rural issues in the whole of West Mercia. Do give it a go. I am also chasing the Area commander about your CSO and beat officer to get more presence at Parish Council meetings etc. Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) supported by West Mercia Police are reminding drivers to be mindful of where they park on narrow roads, as it could prevent fire engines and other emergency vehicles from accessing an emergency. HWFRS also distributed leaflets, candidly branded 'No Way Thru' to warn members of the public about the stark realities of inconsiderate parking, and provide some parking tips to enable emergency service vehicles access. When parking please: 1) Park close to the kerb. 2) Fold in wing mirrors. 3) In narrow streets only park on one side of the road (where possible). 4) Obey the Highway Code and road markings such as yellow lines and box junctions. 5) Do NOT park too close to corners or traffic calming measures. No way through means no help for you! Assistant Chief Fire Officer John Hodges said: "We are urging people to think before they park, emergency vehicles need more space than an average car. Inconsiderate parking can obstruct emergency vehicles and cause delays." "If you would struggle to fit a car or van through parked cars it is very unlikely a fire engine and other service vehicles will. Liz Eyre. County Councillor Climate Change is

Broadway Tourist Information Centre Seeks Volunteers The sun is out, and with the sun come the visitors, keeping us busy in the TIC. At the beginning of this year we were fortunate to have a number of fantastic new people coming to work in the TIC, and they are now fully trained and doing regular shifts. Unfortunately, as we gained new volunteers, we also lost a few others, so we are on the hunt again. So, if there is anyone out there who would like to come along and volunteer in the TIC, we would love to hear from you. Most of us do one half-day shift of 3½ hours a week. Visitors’ needs are very varied, but the work is interesting, occasionally challenging, and fun. If you think you would like to join our friendly team, please contact us. One of us will train you up and be by your side till you’re ready to fly solo. You don’t need to know everything about Broadway – if you’re new to the area it’s a chance for you to learn more about it. If you are able to use a computer that is helpful, but it’s not essential. A friendly smile and an interest in people are probably more important. You can contact us at the TIC – come in and see us or call 01386 852937, or call Sue Blofield on 01386 584366.

We need a Community Neighbourhood Plan ASAP (49 & 65 say so!) Do you believe that there are much more suitable sites for house building in Sedgeberrow than the 20 Houses off 49 Main Street that were deemed as suitable under existing planning constraints? Do you believe that the sustainability levels and energy systems that will be installed there are likely to be below what both old and new residents should reasonably expect, given flooding risks and future global warming predictions. Are you looking aghast at the changes to 65 Main Street that have been allowed under current planning laws, ignoring objection by the Parish Council? Changes that as a resident you KNOW will cause chaos to an already very fraught traffic situation in that area. Changes that are likely to lead to the local Bus Service no longer travelling down Main St. Would you like to increase the influence that residents can have regarding future planning decisions? If so contribute your enthusiasm and knowledge. Become a member of the newly formed Village Neighbourhood Plan Group. Without it our hands will be tied on many decisions about the village. Its success is vital Chris Devereaux-Little. Contact Details. See Page 10

Controlling Your Energy Who controls your energy? Energy is something that influences our lives in lots of areas we often don’t think about, nor feel the need to control. Then we receive a larger than usual fuel bill, because of some obscure incident in a country that we know little about, which means that fuel costs have temporarily soared. Only then does it get to us and become an issue. We can do a lot. We can use less by insulating our houses and keeping inside temperature levels at a reasonable level. What we so far haven’t been able to do is to generate and control our own electricity locally. That time is coming. This is partly because of the increasingly urgent drive to develop renewable energy as a means of reducing our carbon footprint, but also because of the long term financial benefits that can come to local communities who harvest and distribute renewable energy. We may doubt the ability of renewable energy to match and overtake other sources but the evidence says otherwise. Government figures show us that renewable energy, as a percentage of all energy generated, rose from 22% in 2016 to 30.2% in 2017. The 30.2% is balanced against Gas 39.4%, Nuclear 18.2%, Coal 9.2%, Oil and Other 3.1%. Consequently we will be seeing an expansion of local energy networks. Like in Bristol where their Energy Co-operative now has 500 member investors who have helped raise £11 million since 2011, with re-investment back into the community of more than £200,000 so far. Battery improvement is expanding. Battery storage, enabling energy customers to draw energy down as needed will enable a flexible response as to when and how renewable energy is used. A key to all this will be the new smart technology, allowing smooth transfers between electricity producers and the National Grid. To quote Dale Vince, founder of green electricity firm Ecotricity “Our relationship with the grid will become quite different, from being utterly dependent on the grid for power, people may become a bit more interdependent, giving or taking.” Watch this space. Fun Quiz Night for Pancreatic Cancer Research Friday 23rd March 2018 What another brilliant and amazing quiz evening. It was very humbling to see so many people joining us for a fantastic fun night to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Not sure we could have squashed in any more tables!! We cannot thank everyone enough for their help before, during and after the quiz; also for the generous donations and raffle prizes. Grateful thanks to Judy, Jill, Joyce, Sue WC, Elaine plus Richard Hunt for their wonderful help. We couldn’t do it without our amazing helpers. A special BIG BIG thank you to Brian and Wendy Palmer for setting up and doing the quiz – they had some brilliant questions and kept us entertained! They worked so hard to ensure we all had a thoroughly good night out. Congratulations to the winning team – (names in no particular order!!) Emma, Dave, Annette, Anna and Anneka.

The total for the evening (with donations) was an incredible £665 for Pancreatic Cancer Research. General consensus was the whole evening had that feel good factor and was a proper social event. We are overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. A heartfelt big thank you for your support. We hope to organise another fun quiz next year. Sue, Andrew and William Beasley

SEDGEBERROW C.E. FIRST SCHOOL “Reach for the stars The Summer term is in full swing with lots of trips taking place. Y5 have enjoyed two beautifully sunny days bell boating on the River Avon getting ready for the Regatta which takes place in Pershore in June. They have also been on a three-day residential visit to Condover Hall in Shropshire where they enjoyed a variety of activities including climbing walls and a camp fire. Y4 have also been on a residential trip to Malvern Outdoor Elements taking part in lots of adventure activities. Reception class went on a day trip to the Cotswold Farm Park in Guiting Power where they met Strawberry the cow and learnt about where our milk comes from and also had the opportunity to hold a chick. Y1 are looking forward to a visit to West Midlands Safari Park in the near future. Y3 will be kayaking and raft building at Aztec Watersports in Lower Moor in June. At school we have had a bird box camera installed in our recently updated pond and nature area which links to our school I.T. network so that we have a live feed to every classroom. Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed that we have some activity to watch soon. This is a photo of our recently installed School Values Board, made by all the children in school, with the help of local artist, Heather Kelleher. It has brightened up the school so much and is a lovely display.

Sedgeberrow Women’s Institute Welcome to summer. Which summer I hear you ask. Still I expect all the gardens enjoyed the rain. I can’t believe that we are already in May and I am preparing the programme for 2019. We have had some good speakers this year so far and we specially enjoyed the talk we had about Riding for the Disabled. We are hoping to visit their stables in the not too distant future. In May, Mr. Haines will have told us about his work as a First Responder. The competition at this meeting will be -A Derby Day Hat. We had our coffee morning at Ella’s ( 19 members present). Several of our members went to Dumbleton where we had a fun evening playing skittles. I ‘excelled’ myself again by winning the Wooden Spoon !! Details of walks will be in the News Letter, please look in there. Some members went to Gold Cup Day at Cheltenham and others to a later meeting when it was very hot. We are now looking forward to the Racing Club Lunch in June. Our next coffee morning will be held at Hampton Farm Shop on Monday May 21st. The Book Club will meet at Chris’s. On June 13th there will be the Hampton Ferry Walk. June 19th the Garden Party will be held at Ella’s at 6-30 p.m. If wet it will be in the Betteridge Room. In July, our talk will be on ‘ Remembering the 60s.” we hope to make this an open meeting. The competition will be ‘A Holiday Postcard. More so than after arrival in other villages. Usage is still low and the Skipper has said, “If it doesn’t pick up we will have to move to once a month, or worse. He said that other villages are asking for more visits, so we need to use them regularly or they could be off on another orbit. Editor Starchip Enterprise Has Landed Thanks to Villagers enthusiastic support we now have the ultimate mobile fish & chip van, the Starchip Enterprise, visiting the village every Wednesday, parking up just opposite Pear Tree Close. 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm Are you investing 25 in Renewables?

Sedgeberrow Sustainable & Manageable Energy SeSaME Community Pantry. On the basis that 30-50% of food produced globally for human consumption is wasted, meaning that 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted every year in the UK, the Evesham Adventure Playground has set up a Community pantry, open Monday to Friday 12noon until 2pm. They collect discarded, yet perfectly edible, food from supermarkets that would otherwise be dumped and offer it to anyone in the community who can use it. A donation is requested, though not obligatory, to cover their transport costs. Volunteers also cook and freeze food for midday meals during holiday play schemes. With their help SeSaME is offering a similar service on Main St, at the Hovis House, during school term time, between 3pm and 4pm on Thursdays. There is the opportunity for a village community cook-in, using food from the pantry, preserving it for use in the Mike Parker. Chairman. SeSaME

Recipe: Battered Halloumi Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan, or deep fat fryer if you have one. 2. Whisk together the flour, milk, water and baking powder and season with salt and pepper. 3. Check the oil is hot enough by dropping in a bit of the batter. If it floats and sizzles, the oil is hot enough. 4. Dredge the halloumi in the batter and fry for 5-10 mins, until golden, turning over a few times.

Ingredients Serves 2 1/2 block halloumi sliced, into 4 pieces 60g plain flour . 30ml water. 30ml milk. 1 teaspoon baking powder. Salt and pepper. Oil for deep frying. “Goes well with a sweet chilli dip, and chips or salad. Carolyn Savery

SEDGEBERROW PARISH COUNCIL The Annual General Meeting followed by an Ordinary Meeting of the Parish Council took place on 8 May in the Betteridge Room. The Chairman (Chris Devereux- Little) and Vice Chairman (Richard Hunt) were both re-elected unopposed. Emma Kearsey attended her first meeting as a Councillor and John De Paris stood down after many years of hard work for the Parish. There will now be a vacancy notice published for a new Councillor. County Councillor Liz Eyre attended but our Wychavon Councillor did not. The PC accounts have been audited by Mr Goddard. As part of the PC Open Forum 3 village residents attended, 2 of whom brought up the continuing problem of speeding through Winchcombe Rd, the lack of attention to parking and the increasing number of HGVs rocketing through the village. The Chairman reported that White Gates have now been installed at the 3 entrances to the village in an effort to slow the traffic. Cllr Thomas reported on a recent survey conducted by parishioners of traffic numbers at the end of April which has indicated increased use by drivers of the B4078 as a rat run. An approach will also be made to local farmers about speeding farm vehicles. The PC is implementing some HGV strategies with CC Liz Eyre which include having signage amended at Toddington Black Barns crossroads to remove reference to Evesham, making visits to hauliers at Toddington Industrial estate and re-instating the electronic speed signs. The clerk, Mrs Bowles, updated the PC on the Data Protection changes necessary before the GDPR becomes law on 25 May and a way forward was agreed. On Planning - the Council’s objection to the development of 65 Main St (removal of a bungalow replacing it with 2 x 4 bedroom houses) has been ignored by Wychavon Planners despite it meeting all of the criteria for a strong objection. The PC is writing to express our disappointment and to seek clarification for why this gross overdevelopment has been approved. The Parochial Church Council has encountered opposition from Archeological officers at Wychavon regarding their intentions to develop the Vestry into a Community room. The Parish Council had written to Wychavon in support of the Church project and is trying and assist the PCC in any way it can. On the Community Hub - the Steering Group are seeking planning permission for a temporary building on Glebe Meadow. See separate notice in Post. Cllr Morris reported that planning for Sedgeberrow’s teams in the Wychavon Parish Games is going well - lots of responses. See separate notice. Cllr Thomas suggested that Sedgeberrow might consider entering Britain in Bloom and agreed to investigate further.

SEDGEBERROW PARISH COUNCIL – VILLAGERS SURGERY WHEN: - Wednesday June 20th 2018 between 19:30 and 20:30hrs. WHERE: -The Betteridge Room. At every Parish Council Meeting there’s a period of 15 minutes set aside as an Open Forum allowing village residents to only raise questions on that evenings Agenda and/or to ask for the consideration of issues to be put on the Agenda at the next council meeting. The time is necessarily restricted to allow councillors to carry out the business set out in the previously publicly displayed Agenda. Due to the limited time allowed councillors agreed last year to the introduction of a separate Villagers Surgery providing residents with the opportunity to express their views, concerns and opinions surrounding village issues in a more relaxed and informal way. At the next Surgery it is hoped there will be new topics raised and the opportunity of open discussion regarding the update of the following: Updated Highways issues, including A46 Current Status of the Proposed Community Hub/Shop/Café etc. Setting up a Working Group for the Development of a Neighbourhood Plan for Sedgeberrow (Planning Development) Sedgeberrow 2009 Vision for the future – Reviewing the existing Parish Plan These Surgeries are not formal Parish Council Meeting, though Parish Councillors may well be in attendance. If you plan to attend it would be helpful if you could please let me know of other topics you may wish to discuss as soon as possible. Best regards My contact details are: Chris Devereaux-Little. A Lost Watch Dear Editor. I found a wrist watch at the end of March (31/3/18) in the fields to the NE of the village when walking my dog and handed it in to Evesham police station. I won’t give particulars of the item as the person missing it will be able to describe it. Hopefully it can be reunited with its owner. Kind regards, Mary Slater. Broadway Museum and Art Gallery hosts new exhibition: Art of The Great War 1914 – 1918 Thurs 7 June – Weds 12 September 2018 In partnership with the 2018 Broadway Arts Festival, the Broadway Museum and Art Gallery at 65 High Street, Broadway, WR12 7DP is delighted to be hosting the major Festival Exhibition, Art of The Great War 1914-1918, to honour the Centenary of the Armistice of November 11th 1918. The works on show will comprise original art and prints of the period, all from the John Noott Collection, in an attempt to portray the horror – and some of the humour – of a conflict that devastated the lives of millions of people. John Noott was born in 1932, and amongst his earliest memories is talk of the Great War – his father Stanley spent four years in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and young John was fascinated when his father attended Remembrance services, bowler hat and service medals on display. The second war followed, from 1939 to 1945, and at age seven John was well aware of the danger the country was in, and his memories of that period are still clear. For the last fifty years, John has been a successful art dealer, and when, during that time, artwork depicting either war has come his way he has put it to one side, enabling exhibitions of this type to be mounted. He sees them as an opportunity educate, to explain something of the history of the Twentieth Century. Broadway Museum and Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm (last entry 4.30 pm). Please see the website for details at www.broadwaymuseum.org.uk.
