Future Meetings

Happy Rotary New Year

On Tuesday 6 July, we will have as guest speaker, Lance Aird brother of PP Brenton Aird. Lance has worked in the oil industry for many years and spoke at a club meeting some years ago when he and his wife were living in Dubai. Much of Lance’s working life has been spent in the Middle East, not only Dubai, and he will tell some anecdotes based on his experiences living overseas, particularly in Middle Eastern countries. Should be interesting and entertaining. On Tuesday 20 July, we will hear from Andrew Ramsey former member of our club and son of PP Bob Ramsey. Andrew has built a stellar career in the South Australian workforce over many years. I first knew him through membership of our club when he was Marketing Manager of Michell Leather, a division of GH Michell. Andrew has held many managerial positions within business and industrial enterprises in South Australia including several years as Manager of Commercial Enterprises, Minda Inc. Currently he is CEO of the MOBO Group, a disabled services provider which came out of the merger of Hands On SA and Finding Workable Solutions Inc. Andrew will tell us about what MOBO is and does. In place of a formal changeover function this year, members, partners and friends are invited to a social dinner to be held on Friday 16 July at Minda Inc

We have again entered another new Rotary year with all the promise and enthusiasm that the occasion deserves. It took some time for the 2020-2021 year to settle down for our club and I think we all owe President Max a grateful thank you for helping the club and all members through a difficult time. Max has agreed to continue in the role of Club President for 2021-2022 for which we are thankful.

MPORTANT INFORMATION In place of a formal changeover function this year, members, partners and friends are invited to a social dinner to be held on Friday 16 July at Minda Inc Café. Cost is $25.00 per person. Please RSVP to Wayne Leaves by email or phone on 0408 455 730 Response has been small so far so even though RSVP date was 1 July, please give a positive response to Wayne ASAP.

Incoming Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta from the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, has chosen a very simple theme for this year, “Serve to Change Lives” which in itself is the very foundation of Rotary. Instead of us having a changeover function this year, there will be a special celebratory dinner on Friday 16 July at our normal venue, Minda’s Inc Café, on Friday July commencing at 6.00pm. This is intended to be a fun night with a good menu and priced at $25.00 per person. Please RSVP to Wayne on 0408 455 730 by Friday 2 July and read Max’s email of 24 June.

Incoming RI President for 2021 - 2022, Shekhar Mehta.

Past Meetings

At our meeting on 1 June, we had as guest speaker, Marie-louise Lees, Rotary Foundation chair for District 9510. Marie-louise is a member of the RC Gawler Light and is a past president of the RC Gawler. She is a Petroleum Engineer by profession and is an associate of the company, Energy Quest. Marie-louise reinforced our perception of The Rotary Foundation as being our charity, owned and managed by Rotarians. For many years the main program of TRF has been, and still is, “End Polio”. With the financial support of other bodies, for example the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world wide eradication of polio has been achieved with the exception of Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. The end is in sight. There are four main funds within the Foundation, Polio, Endowment, Annual and Disaster. A new focus of TRF will be added from 1 July 2021 namely Environment. Clubs and individuals are encouraged to support The Rotary Foundation through various donation schemes.

On Tuesday 15 June, we heard from Ian Steel, founder and coordinator of the charitable program, KickStart for Kids which provides Breakfast, Lunch, Mentoring and Camp KickStart Programs for needy children. Ian started KickStart for Kida some years ago after mentoring young children in schools and noticing their poor behaviour and lack of ability to learn. After researching the issue, , he discovered that many of the problems were caused by hunger. The research showed that thousands of children are being sent to school without any food And these children, some as young as five, are lucky to consume one snack per day. KickStart for Kids is a not for profit charity which helps disadvantaged school children in South Australia by providing breakfast and lunch programs, a mentoring program and a vacation care program called Camp KickStart. KickStart for Kids delivers food to over 300 South Australian schools and provides over 50 000 breakfasts per week. Our club is interested in helping KickStart for Kids in some way and this will be discussed by the Club Board in the very near future. It is estimated that to run a KickStart for Kids program in one school for 12 months costs $1200.

Club Bulletin 6 and 20 July 2021 Symphony by the Sea

ROMAC Lunch

Thanks to PP Frank White and his team, a very successful musical afternoon was held on Saturday 26 June in the Concert Hall of Brighton Secondary School. A total of $2500 was raised, $1500 from ticket sales. 300 people attended and $1000 from the raffle. All money will be donated to ROMAC , Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, to assist in continuing their good work. COVID safe practices were observed with everyone required to wear a face mask unless eating, drinking or on this occasion, performing. It was really pleasing to see Rotary and one of its programs so well supported.

Following our successful Symphony by the Sea musical afternoon run as a fundraiser for ROMAC, Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, members are asked to support ROMAC again by attending a lunch on Sunday 29 August at the Adelaide Pavilion. President Max has purchased 12 tickets for this lunch at $65 each to make up a table. He has sold 10 tickets to members and partners and currently has 2 tickets left. If you are interested in attending, please contact max ASAP. Time is from 12.30 to 4.00pm.

.

District Governor’s Visit District Governor of District 9510, Jeff Neale and Jenny will make their official visit to our club at our meeting on Tuesday 3 August. Jeff is a member of the Rotary Club of Campbelltown, joining that club in 1990 and was Club president in 2007-2008. He is Dealer Principal of Paradise Mazda and has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship plus 3 sapphires. I always find it inspiring to listen to what each DG has to say about their Rotary life.
