Australian Rotary Health and the Indigenous Health Scholarship Program Guest Speaker : Jane Gascoigne

(Meeting: 5 July 2022)

Jane has been actively involved in Rotary and in District Committees including Australian Rotary Health. In 2013 she joined the Indigenous Health Scholarship Program and commenced the role as Chair three years ago. In 1999 Geoffrey Bailey OAM from the Rotary Club of Mitcham, was instrumental in developing the Programme. He became aware that Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders required access to mainstream health services that were not accessible to many in remote communities. More Indigenous health professionals would • provide more culturally appropriate healthcare for their people, • build Aboriginal people’s confidence in the health system. The Program provides a scholarship of $5,000 per year to assist Indigenous students in health-related professions - $2,500 from Rotary and $2,500 from Chris Morath thanking Jane government (State and Federal) . Over 25% of all graduated Indigenous Doctors have received scholarships through this Program. In 2003 ARH took over management of the scheme and the Commonwealth Government provided funding for administration of the programme within the ARH office. Students are paid scholarships twice per year after passing subjects. Students are supported by a Rotary Club appointed Mentor and invited to Club meetings and functions. Students must commit to attend Rotary Club meetings and communicating with their Mentor. In 2022, 89 scholarships have been awarded in States and Territories of Australia. (18 in South Australia.) Since 2004 there have been 94 graduates in South Australia and over 270 nationally. 1
