Future Meetings Members may remember Ian Steel, Founder and Director of “KickStart for Kids” who spoke to our club in June last year. Ian (pictured below) will return by invitation on 7 June to tell us more and to receive our contribution towards the work of this charity.

KickStart for Kids is a Not for Profit organisation that helps disadvantaged school children in South Australia to achieve positive education outcomes and increase self esteem yhrough school breakfast and lunch programs, mentoring programs and camp KickStart school holiday care programs. It was founded by Ian Steel, a builder by trade, father of three, who spent meny years mentoring youg children experiencing hardship in school. Ian concluded that behavioural problems had a direct cause through hunger. He contacted local shop keepers who offered enough food donations to allow him to supply breakfasts to children he worked with. Kids became happier and more friendly.

Symphony by the Sea Members are reminded that our annual Symphony by the Sea, organised by PP Frank, will be held at the Brighton Secondary School Concert Hall on Saturday 18 June from 2.00 to 4.00pm. This event showcases the the Brighton Secondary School’s Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia, Stimson wind quartet and the winners of the Rotary Club Solo competition. Tickets at $10.00 each are available from Trybooking through the link www.trybooking.com/BZIBV Any enquiries to Frank on 0414 239 423. A raffle will be held with proceeds directed to ROMAC.

Changover Lunch Our changeover of Club President from Max, who has served us admirably in that role for almost two years, to Rajni will take place on Sunday 26 June 2022 at the Glenelg Golf Club, James Melrose Road, Novar Gardens at lunch 12 noon for 12.30pm start. Cost will be $50.00 per person which covers bubbles on arrival, a two course meal, tea, coffee and chocolates. Drinks will be available for purchase at the bar. Payments are requested to be made by direct debit if possible to Rotary Club of Somerton Park, BSB: 085333, Account No. 205083444 or in cash to Rajni or to Club Treasurer Chris Morath.

The program now supports over 350 schools with 50 000 breakfasts, 10 000 lunches each week. At our meeting on 3 May, we had as Guest Speaker our member Geoff Catt speaking on many of his life experiences. Geoff was brought up in the Barossa Valley, Angaston to be precise, where his father was an Engineer with the cement woks limestone quarries. After leaving school, Geoff attended the Australian Army Officer Cadet School at Portsea in Victoria, He graduated as Second Lieutenant. He then attended a Royal Army (UK) course on armoured vehicles and on his return to Australia was posted to Puckapunyal in Victoria as an instructor in armoured vehicles. (Tanks) He served for some 13 years as a commissioned Army Officer, reaching the rank of Major in the Royal Australian Armoured Corps before retiring from the Army.

Geoff then embarked on a lengthy career as a financial adviser and planner. He established three offices for the Paul Terry Corporation in Victoria and Tasmania, and became Regional Manager in South Australia. He spent two years in Hong Kong expanding Monitor Money’s operation in the region. In the mid 1990’s he was appointed a Director and Chairman of Symetry Limited until its successful sale in 2004.

At our meeting on Tuesday 17 May we were pleased to again welcome Peter Bowley representing the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Peter’s presentation earlier in the year had some difficulties due to problems with the projector. Youth Photographic Exhibition

Following Peter’s presentation, Chairman for the day, PP Frank, presented him with our cheque for $2000. This was the proceeds of the Quiz Night raffle from earlier in the year. We were able to show our collective appreciation for the work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Our proposed signature project, the Youth Photographic Exhibition and Competition (Nature and Environment), is now being promoted through the City of Holdfast Bay website www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/ RotaryYPE Phil and Kathy, back from holidays, intend visiting schools in the council area to promote this to Reception to Year 6 students. Entries open from 25 May to 15 August 2022 with the exhibition itself during the October school holidays. Please give your help and support to make this a success.

Annual Subscription Club Treasurer Chris has sent invoices to all members advising that our annual subscription of $240.00 is due and payable for 2022-2023 membership. It may be paid as one payment or in two six monthly components of $120.00.

RYLA 2022 Applications are now open for young adults aged between 18 and 25 years to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program for 2022.
